Fountains are desir-able in feng shuibecause they bring

the energy of water intothe environment in abeautiful and elegant way. Water was important to

farmers in ancient Chinabecause the success oftheir rice crops dependedon having abundantwater. Plentiful waterresulted in plentiful rice,so over time waterbecame associated withwealth and sustenance.Moving water repre-

sents flow, good commu-nication, cleansing andmovement, whereas stillwater represents wis-dom, calmness and spiri-tuality. Choosing to placewater strategically in theenvironment reminds usof these themes andprompts us to participatefurther in creating them.

The effect of waterHave you ever noticed

how good you feel aftervisiting places in nature,

such as the beach, themountains, the country-side or waterfalls? Thatgood feeling is because ofnegative ions that arenaturally present in theoutdoors. Rememberhow it feels after a thun-derstorm? That “clean”feeling is actually theeffect of the release of alot of negative ions.Positive ions have the

opposite effect — theycause us to feel tired, lethargic and fatigued.Electronics such as com-puters and artificial light-ing generate positive ions.In this day and age, manyof us find ourselves infront of a computer all daysurrounded by artificiallighting. No wonder weare always so tired! Thesepositive ions are suspend-ed in the air, and the morewe breathe them in, themore they affect us.

Water and negative ionsWhen water splashes,

it releases negative ions

into the atmosphere, andthese bond with any pos-itive ions suspendedthere. The negative ionsneutralize the heavyeffect that the positiveions have on our moodand feelings. You experi-ence this anytime youtake a shower: you feelperked up and rejuvenat-ed afterward, don’t you?Your feeling of refresh-ment is a result of all thenegative ions pairing upwith the positive ions.

No desire for a fountain?Photographs of water

will stimulate your brainand produce the sameenergy, just in a differentform. If the tricklingsounds a fountain makesdo not resonate with youor if you have no time tomaintain one and keep itrunning, you can get thesame effect with a lot lessmaintenance by usingimages of water. Pictures of lakes or still

bodies of water represent

the energy of clarity, andpictures of moving watersuch as waterfalls or theocean bring the energy offlow and movement intothe environment. Choosewhat you want to createmore of in your life anduse an image of water tosupport you.

Where to place a fountainThe best placement for

water is anywhere alongthe front wall or the leftwall of your home, busi-ness, office or room(standing at the entrance,

looking into the room).Check that the directionof the water flow ispointed toward the cen-ter of the room.

Will a fountain bring megood luck? The fountain itself will

bring you neither goodluck nor bad luck. Your“luck” depends on howsynchronous and in tuneyou are with your per-sonal flow of life. The

more you resist life, themore challenges you willhave. However, by plac-ing a fountain withintent, it will help to sub-consciously direct youtoward being in the flowand creating more ofwhat you want in yourlife.

You know it makessense to take fulladvantage of all

the benefits of solarpower, but you’re notsure what type of systemwill work best for you — asolar water heating sys-tem, a photovoltaic sys-tem, or a combination ofthe two.The decision isn’t hard

to make when you havethe right advice — thekind of advice you can getonly from an experiencedsolar company with abackground in both solarwater heating systemsand the latest photovolta-ic technology.Hi-Power Solar partners

Ron Romero and MattAdams have combinedexperience of 35 years assolar contractors inHawaii. The company is amember of the BuildingIndustry Association ofHawaii and BetterBusiness Bureau and aparticipating contractor inthe Hawaii EnergyProgram. Over the years, they have installed alltypes of systems, but onlythose that have beenproven efficient and reli-able. To ensure that theproducts they representare “top of the line,” theytravel to manufacturingplants nationwide tobecome fully conversant

with the technology.“Our No. 1 commitment

is customer satisfaction,”Romero said. “And conse-quently, our best advertis-ing over the years hasalways been word of mouthand referrals. When a newclient contacts us, we aremore than happy to providethem with references ofcustomers who purchased asystem from Hi-PowerSolar.”“Concern about the

cost of energy has neverbeen greater with highprices and impendingshortages,” Adams added.“Solar is a technologywithin reach of everyhomeowner, and it hasnever been more afford-able. Rebates on solarwater heating systemsand state and federaltax credits for bothsolar water heating andphotovoltaic systemsare available.”“Our policy at Hi-

Power solar is to assessevery customer individu-ally to identify the type ofsystem that best suitstheir lifestyle and budg-et,” Romero said.“If your need is sim-

ply to heat water for the

home, we can give you aprice for installation. Forphotovoltaics, we reviewyour current electricitycharges and provide areport on what you cansave. The savings will bebased on the system’s sizeand the current usage andelectricity expenditures ofthe client.“The upfront invest-

ment is, of course, morefor a photovoltaic systemthan for a solar waterheating system, but, overtime, the investment isalso recouped in savings.”He pointed out that

while the tax credits forinstallation of solar waterheating systems are 30percent federal and 35

percent state up to $2,250for solar hot water, themaximum for photovolta-ic installations is $5,000per system, per year.“It’s actually possible

to get your total monthlyexpenditure for electrici-ty down to a minimumcharge of approximately$18,” Romero said.“I believe the main

obstacle among con-sumers who have notmade the move into solar

is confusion about thevarious types of systemsout there today ... andthere are many. The pho-tovoltaic system we arecurrently installing is themost advanced with suchfeatures as a monitoringcomponent that enablesthe home or businessowner to go online tocheck the health, per-formance and efficiencyof the system. We alsoare prepared to address

concerns about aesthet-ics.“The key is customiza-

tion ... one size does notfit all. So, we invite any-one planning to upgrade, replace or install a newsystem to contact us fora free on-site consulta-tion.“We work with only

proven local suppliersand technicians in orderto support the local econ-omy. We are also veryselective about the man-ufacturers who produceour photovoltaic panelsand support Americanindustry wherever possi-ble,” Romero said.Hi-Power Solar can pro-

vide advice to the con-sumer on the best types offinancing programs avail-able for purchase of bothsolar and PV. Romero saidthat a home equity line ofcredit is sometimes thebest option, or he can givereferrals to credit unionsthat are able to offer goodterms both to existing andnew members. For additional informa-

tion, contact Hi-PowerSolar at 342-0802.

At Pacific IslandsC o n s t r u c t i o n ,workers believe

there are excellent tech-nologies available thatprovide consumers withbetter options. One newsolar thermal product thatfits this definition is aproduct from Apricus. Theproduct is a new and moreefficient type of solarwater heating technology. Apricus, a leading manu-

facturer of evacuated tubesolar hot water collectors, has teamed up with distrib-utor Lumen Solar to bringits innovative products tothe local market. Originallydeveloped in Australia,Apricus collectors are wide-ly used in the continentalU.S., Australia and Europe. While evacuated tubes

are gaining traction in manyparts of the world, flat platesolar water heaters have

continued to dominate theHawaii market. Flat platesdo perform well under thefull sun conditions thatHawaii is famous for; how-ever, they lose significantlymore heat to the environ-ment, which makes themless efficient and more likelyto re-radiate heat onto yourrooftop when it could begoing into your hot watersupply. This particularlybecomes a concern inWindward, upcountry andcooler valley areas, whereevery BTU counts. Here’s how evacuated

tubes work: Each Apricusevacuated tube consists of adouble-walled vacuum-sealed glass tube that iscoated on the inside withaluminum nitride. Insidethe tube is an aluminum finand a vacuum-sealed cop-per heat pipe containing asmall amount of distilled

water, also under a vacuum. As the collector heats up,the water inside the heatpipe boils, creating steamthat transfers heat to cop-per header pipes inside thecollector manifold. InHawaii where freezing isnot a threat, you can pumpyour potable water directlythrough the header pipes, where it is heated by con-duction and then pumpedinto your storage tank. The vacuum seal inside

each evacuated tube pro-vides excellent insulation, ensuring that the collectorremains cool to the touchand loses minimal heat tothe environment. In fact, theinsulation value (also calledR-value) of a vacuum is vir-

tually infinite — it wouldtake 74 cubic miles of regu-lar air to provide the sameinsulation as this vacuum! The rounded surface of theevacuated tubes alsoincreases their efficiency bymaximizing exposure todirect sunlight as the sunmoves across the sky. Onsilver or white-coated roofs, the efficiency is furtherboosted by up to 30 percentby the light reflecting fromthe roof underneath. Apricus evacuated tubes

are durable (tested to 1-inchhail at 50 mph) and remov-able, making for easy instal-lation, maintenance, andreplacement. If one tubebreaks, a single person canremove it and the rest of the

system will function normal-ly until the tube is replaced.Extra tubes are available on-island at minimal cost. Bycontrast, replacing or servic-ing a flat plate systemrequires shutting down thesystem and removing theentire collector from theroof, which can be a three-or four-person job. Apricus collectors come

in 10-, 20- and 30-tube sizesand can be mixed andmatched to reach yourdesired hot water output.Assuming an average hotwater usage of 20 gallonsper person per day, one 30-tube collector can serve ahousehold of four people

with an 80-gallon tank inmost parts of Hawaii. Theyare suitable for retrofits onexisting hot water systemsas well as new systems.Retrofits on existing homesare eligible for a 30 percentfederal tax credit, a 35 per-cent state tax credit (up to$2,250), and for systemsinstalled by the end of June,Hawaii Energy is offering a$1,500 cash rebate (afterJune 30 the rebate will be$750). All told, replacingyour electric water heaterwith a solar hot water sys-tem can pay for itself in aslittle as two years! Call 841-7756 for more

information.

What is under and on theroof makes The NewHawaiian Home a

green-comfortable living envi-ronment that has life-cycle, cost-savings benefits. This is the newway to build homes in Hawaiibecause it is designed and builtfor our tropical climate whileconserving our limited resources.

The RoofPre-designed engineered wood

trusses supplied by HonoluluWood Treating LLC and installedby Sunrise Construction Inc.,were made in a controlled envi-ronment with precision lasermeasuring equipment that pre-vents mistakes and materialwaste. The trusses are structural-ly designed for The NewHawaiian Home to support theweight of the light-color metalroof that reflects heat and col-lects rainwater for irrigation sup-plied by HPM Building Supplyand installed by Protech Roofing

LLC; the photovoltaicpanels sized, furnishedand installed on theroof by RevoluSunLLC; and the radiantbarrier Techshield roofsheeting deflects thesun’s rays, keeping theattic space cooler.

Under the RoofEcobat recycled fiberglass

insulation supplied by KnaufInsulation and installed bySinclaire Drywall Inc. wasinstalled in the attic and underthe second floor joists of the bed-rooms that have air conditioners. The purpose is to prevent theheat from penetrating from theattic into the rooms below andthe cold air from escaping out ofthe conditioned bedrooms. The

Airscapes whole house fan isducted to the attic space andwhen turned on pulls outside airinto the home and the hot air upand out through the attic vents, cooling the home within min-utes. All exterior walls wereinsulated with Icynene foaminsulation installed by JDHConstruction Limited to create acontrollable interior environ-ment.

Oceanview Builders Inc. erect-ed the steel-framed panels fabri-cated by Steel Truss & PanelLLC. CEMCO supplied the lightgauge structural steel framing forthe exterior walls, which areengineered to transfer the weightof the roof and second floor intothe foundation. A new product, alighter gauge steel stud for parti-tion walls that are not weight

bearing, was supplied by DietrichIndustries Inc. Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. supplied all ofthe hurricane clips and holddowns to secure the structureroof, walls and second floor tothe concrete foundation asrequired by the hurricane build-ing code.

We will be featuring the con-struction methods used in build-ing The New Hawaiian Homeeach month.

Kitchen remodeling can bea daunting task, but cabi-net refacing makes it eas-

ier on many levels. Refacing can actually save you

money because it keeps the exist-

ing cabinet boxes in place. Withrefacing, only the exterior of thecabinets — doors, drawers andhardware — are replaced. Thismeans you can change the entirelook of the cabinets by choosing

a new colorand style.

Refacing alsois an easy wayto update yourkitchen at lessthan 50 percentof the cost ofbuying brandnew. By not

ripping the cabinets out of thekitchen, you save on labor andmaterials.

Many have that one problemarea: the pantry that seems tohave 10-year-old expired cans in

the back; the corner cabinet thatyou haven’t explored in years;the lost corner cabinet that youknow has storage space some-where back there, but you justcan’t get to it.

Essential Cabinet RefacingInc. can help you find solu-tions to these problems bydoing simple carpentry modi-fications or adding some cabi-net inserts or special hard-ware. Best yet, the job neednot cost you thousands ofextra dollars to do it.

If a new kitchen is what you

desire, contact EssentialCabinet Refacing Inc. immedi-ately. The company builds newcustom cabinets in its shop.Everything is made to order bya team of skilled staff mem-bers. They have been in busi-ness 21 years and pride them-selves on high-quality workoffered at reasonable, competi-tive prices.

Owners Ringo and MichelePauly have their offices andshop in the Sand Island area at212 Mohonua Place. Showroomhours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The key to a perfectpainting job, whetherthe project is big or

small, residential or com-mercial, is choosing an expe-rienced, licensed contractor.Island Budget Painting

owner Ted Wexler and hiscrew have combined experi-ence of over 37 years in thebusiness and a very long ros-ter of satisfied, repeat clients.Tesoro Service Stations

throughout Oahu are an

example of a long-standingclient of Island BudgetPainting. Property man-agers, management compa-nies specializing in town-homes and apartment build-ings, and homeowners asso-ciations are also regularclients, requiring not onlynew paint jobs but ongoingmaintenance. Realtors upgrad-ing a home to enhance itssaleability also call on Wexler, often with tight deadlines tomeet. He works with some ofHawaii’s top architects andinterior designers, as well asdirectly with homeowners.“People often assume that

b e c a u s eyour com-pany han-dles bigpro jec t s ,

you won’t be available forthe smaller jobs,” Wexlersaid. “That just isn’t the casewith Island Budget Painting. We enjoy the challenge oftransforming a house orapartment for an ownerwith a great paint job.Working with a large, expe-rienced contractor does nothave to cost more, becausewe know exactly how toproceed and have all the lat-est equipment. Hiring anamateur painter is like hir-ing a novice computer tech-nician — they may give youa lower-per-hour price, but

it will take them more timeto achieve the desiredresults. And the results maynot be exactly what you hadhoped for. “When we quote a price,

we explain exactly what itwill take to do a perfect job... meaning one that will beright the first time. If weknow that existing surfaceshave to be properly pre-pared in order to preventcracking or peeling downthe road, we will so advisethe client.”Wexler is a specialist in

color selection and canassist clients in makingchoices and matching exist-ing colors or furnishings, aswell as advise on the bestproducts for the job. For many years, HawaiianSunGuard (HSG) has been theleader in providing waterproof

Ceramic Titanium roof coatings. These water-based coatings havebeen proven to both cool and pre-serve the existing roof surface byblocking 100 percent of the sun’s UVrays. When HSG is embedded into areinforcing fabric it forms a tough, waterproof system that withstandsmost standing water conditions. Likeall water-based acrylic coatings, however, it can break down overtime in areas of extreme ponding —like in the photo shown at left. For those extreme situations, HSG

has developed its new solvent-freeHawaiian SunGuard Silicone line.Silicone has been proven for years asa durable waterproof coating. However, it has often had very high

levels of dangerous VOCs (volatileorganic compounds), which havebeen shown to harm the environmentand human health.Because HSG Silicone is solvent-

free, it has ultra-low VOCs — only10.2 grams/liter vs. 249 grams/literfor another leading local brand of sil-icone.Even better, HSG Silicone has 95

percent solids versus only 69 per-cent for another local brand of sili-cone. That means you get more ofthe effective ingredients in everybucket — and less of the smelly, dangerous solvents. That’s whyafter 10,000 hours of exposureunder the testing method, ASTM B-4799, “no degradation” was report-

ed. That’s why Leakmasters canoffer warranties of 5, 10, 15 and 20years, depending on your situation. HSG Silicone can be professionally

installed by Leakmasters, or you maywish to do it yourself. If so, GreenEnergy Outlet is offering a free “Do itYourself Seminar and Sale” onSaturday, May 4 at its location at 575-G Cooke St. in Kakaako. Come any-time from noon till 4 p.m. as thedemo will be repeated throughoutthe day. Leakmasters also will be demon-

strating how to apply its popularacrylic version of HSG at that sameevent. Past events have been wellattended, and the company’s prod-ucts often sell out — because of the“One Day, Only Sale” at that event. For more information, call 591-

The kitchen has alwaysbeen the heart of the home— a place where the fami-

ly socializes and entertainsfriends. It’s no wonder a kitchenremodel occupies first place onmany homeowners’ wish lists, especially at a time when familiesare spending less time dining outand more time at home.Unfortunately, it’s also one of themost expensive and time-con-suming home improvement proj-ects a family will undertake, rang-ing from $17,000 to $20,000 for abasic kitchen remodel.

“Since the kitchen occupies ahighly visible space in the home,it’s understandable that familieswant it to reflect their style andpersonality. But unfortunately, atraditional kitchen remodel canmean a bigger investment of timeand money than many families can

handle,” says Rust-Oleum seniorbrand manager Ann Gearty.“Fortunately, now there’s anaffordable alternative. For lessthan $500, homeowners canupdate their old, outdated cabinetsand countertops and make themlook brand new thanks to break-through coating technologies.”

Here’s how you can get yourown kitchen transformation on abudget:

Select a color schemeDark accent walls with neutral

colors are all the trend right now,but you’ll want to make sure youchoose a color palette thatexpresses your personal styleand that you think will bearound for years to come. Homedecorating magazines and web-sites are great sources of inspira-tion when selecting a color

scheme for your new kitchen.

Start with the cabinets They are the focal point of

any kitchen and will set thetone for the look and feel ofthe entire room. Instead of replac-ing or refacing, it’s easy to trans-form worn, outdated cabinets tothe look of beautiful hand-craftedcabinets with Rust-OleumCabinet Transformations. Therefinishing system provides youwith all the tools you need to giveyour cabinets a fresh, new lookfor less than $150 — without thestripping, sanding or primingassociated with cabinet painting. It works on all types of cabinets— wood, melamine, laminate andmore. Plus it is available in 70beautiful finishes and is guaran-teed to last for years to come.

Rethink your current countertop You don’t have to replace your

countertop to get a sleek newlook. With new Rust-OleumCountertop Transformations, youcan transform your worn or dam-aged laminate countertops at afraction of the cost of replace-ment. Available in a convenientkit for $250, the innovative coat-ing system comes with all thetools needed to transform youroutdated countertops to mirrorthe look of natural stone such asgranite. The coating was putthrough extensive testing toensure it could stand up againstdaily wear and tear. It’s availablein five different colors and is so

easy to use, the entire project canbe completed in less than a week-end.

Don’t forget the detailsIt’s easy to make your old cabi-

net knobs and pulls look brandnew with a few coats of spraypaint. Try a spray paint like Rust-Oleum Universal Oil-RubbedBronze to mimic one of today’shottest metal finishes at a fractionof the cost. The possibilities areonly limited by your imagination.

If your patio furniture, barbecue grill orfavorite outdoor planter

were left outside this win-ter, they probably took abeating. But, think twicebefore you relegate yourfavorite lounge chair orlawn ornament to the land-fill. It’s easy to transformthem and make them lookbetter than new. All youneed is a little imaginationand a few cans of spraypaint.“Replacing outdoor fur-

niture can be expensiveand in many cases, unnec-essary,” says Rust-Oleumhome improvement expertand PaintIdeas.com blog-ger, Angie Stinner. “It’s

easy tot r a n s f o rmworn, dam-aged out-door furni-ture andaccessorieswith a little

spray paint. And, with avariety of popular colorsand on-trend finishes fromwhich to choose, you canupcycle the things youalready own and makethem look better thannew.”Here are a few tips from

PaintIdeas.com:

• Create “designer” fur-niture. Designer patio sets, lawn chairs and other out-door furniture can costhundreds, even thousandsof dollars. But, it’s easy andinexpensive to give the fur-niture you already own afacelift that mimics thelook of trendy designer

furniture with a few coatsof spray paint.

• Create a durabledesigner look that sparklesin the sun with a texturedblack paint with flecks ofsilver. The texture addsdepth, elegance andunmatched protection toany project. Or, create arich oil-rubbed bronze fin-ish, while protecting yourfurniture from the ele-ments with Rust-OleumUniversal spray paint.Choose an unexpectedcolor, like Painter’s Touch2X Satin Eden. You alsocan transform garage salebargains, flea market finds,or used furniture you findon sites like CraigsList orFreecycle with spray paintto get a designer look with-out the designer price tag.

• Revive an old barbecuegrill. If your grill was

buried under three feet ofsnow, it could probably usea little TLC. Why notrevive it with a spray paintspecifically formulated forhigh heat applications, likegrills? For example, Rust-Oleum High Heat Ultraresists heat up to 1,200degrees Fahrenheit so it’sgreat for grills, fire pits andwood burning stoves. Plus,it’s available in traditionalblack, as well as stylish col-ors and finishes, like brownand aged copper so yourbarbecue grill will look bet-ter than new.

• Accessories can get asecond life too. No need totoss planters, lawn orna-ments or other outdooraccessories because theirfinish has been weatherdamaged. Spray paint cangive them a second life. Tryspray painting planters withRust-Oleum Stops Rust fora rooftop garden or patio ina variety of vegetable colors— Sunrise Red for toma-toes, Hunter Green for let-tuce or green peppers, dif-ferent shades of green forherbs. It’s that time of the yearwhen it’s only naturalthat we start thinking

about spring cleaning. Inaddition to organizing andcleaning this year, considerthe following tips tochange up your annualroutine and make yourhome a little greener.

1. Green your supplies Replace harsh household

cleaning products withenvironmentally safe andnatural solutions. Not onlyare they biodegradable andtherefore better for theenvironment, but they con-tain no toxic chemicals.Plus, making cleaning solu-tions from items in yourpantry such as vinegar, lemon juice and bakingsoda can help cut down onpackaging waste. Manycredible online resourcesoffer recipes for alterna-tive cleaning products.

2. Check for leaksLeaks in the home, such

as drafty windows anddoors or dripping faucets, can lead to wasted moneyand resources. Check forair leaks in your house byinspecting areas around thewindows and doors, as wellas in the attic or crawl-space. Properly sealingthose spaces can help youcut back on cooling costsand increase comfort.Information on how toassess your home anddetermine how much insu-lation you need can befound at www.EnergyStar.gov. If you want to hire aprofessional, then MascoHome Services' WellHomeprogram provides perform-ance assessments to helphomeowners improvehome energy-efficiencyand comfort.

According to theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), a leakyfaucet dripping at the rateof one drip per second canwaste more than 3,000 gal-lons of water per year.Want to know if you haveany leaky fixtures aroundthe house? Routinely mon-itor the water meter andkeep a record of the num-bers. Any reading that ishigher than usual couldindicate a problem. The EPA-sponsored

WaterSense program aimsto preserve water by sup-porting water-efficient prod-ucts, programs and prac-tices. Visit its website tolearn different ways to savewater, tips to help you iden-tify and repair leaky fixturesand other fun facts.

3. Clean out your showerBefore you start scrubbing

your tub or shower, takeinventory of all the items youkeep in it. Consolidate whereyou can and consider usingfragrance-free products andwater-efficient fixtures.During a recent nationwidestudy conducted on behalf ofDelta Faucet Company, 40percent of respondents saidthey had never changed theirshowerhead. The EPA reportsthat if just one out of every 10homes in the United Statesupgraded to WaterSense-labeled products, the com-bined savings would be morethan 120 billion gallons ofwater and more than $800 mil-lion annually. If you haven’t replaced

your showerhead recently, then look into Delta’sWaterSense-labeled fix-tures. They flow at a rate ofno more than 2.0 gallonsper minute (gpm) and helpyou save water in yourdaily routine.

“We’ve found that userswant green products aslong as they don’t have tosacrifice their experiencewith water,” says PaulPatton, senior productdeveloper for Delta FaucetCompany. “H2OkineticTechnology creates largerdroplets to provide adrenching shower experi-ence while improvingwater efficiency up to 40percent compared to theindustry standard."

4. Responsibly dispose ofunwanted itemsCleaning and organizing

your closets can berefreshing. As you invento-ry your closet and dressers, categorize items into dif-ferent piles: keep for now, store for later and donate.

If you haven’tworn or usedsomething in ayear, then consid-er donating it. TheSalvation Armyand GoodwillIndustries provideinformation ontheir websites forhow to locate adonation centerand identify whattypes of items areaccepted. Bothorganizations accept cloth-ing, furniture and generalhousehold items in variouslocations.Go through the items in

your garage and get rid ofany chemicals, cleaners,or cans of paint thathaven’t been used inawhile. Read the product

labels for disposalinstructions or check themanufacturer’s websitefor details. Earth911.orgprovides informationabout how to safely dis-card many toxic prod-ucts. Making your home

Quality Work, Competitive Prices

Spring means cleaning tools, replacing equipment andsprucing up the yard. To

start your season off greener, con-sider using electric or cordlesslawn care products.

“Electric products havebecome a reliable and eco-friend-ly way to do yard work,” saysCoey Genuise, product market-ing manager for Remington, aleading manufacturer of cordlessand electric power tools. “Theyare virtually silent, lighter, moreenergy-efficient and don'trequire any gas or oil, whichavoids mess and hassle and savesyou money.”

Mowing is an important step inkeeping your lawn healthy. Inorder to keep it as green as possi-ble, use an electric or cordlessmower. These mowers are lessexpensive to maintain and oper-ate because there’s no need forgas and oil. A cordless pushmower also allows emissions-free power without the hassle ofa cord. One model fromRemington features a removable24 volt battery that can lastapproximately 30 to 50 minutesfrom one charge depending onmowing conditions, which ismore than enough time to mow asmall-sized lawn.

When finishing your lawn, anoth-er way to help keep the grass andthe environment greener is to use an

electric string trimmer. Electrictrimmers are lighter, so your armdoesn’t get tired; and they’re quieter,so ear protectors aren't necessary. However, you should always wearsafety glasses and heavy duty gloveswhenever using any outdoor powerequipment.

Consider these tips to help keepyour lawn looking great and yourequipment running smoothly.

• Make sure to clean yourmower and other tools beforedoing any work in the yard tokeep them running longer.

• To avoid accidental startup, always remove the power sourcebefore doing any maintenancework on your trimmer, moweror other outdoor power equip-ment.

• Sharpen or replace mowerblades at the beginning of eachseason. This ensures you’ll have afull season of great lawn cuts.

• Know the battery type of yourcordless equipment. If yourequipment operates on NiCadbatteries, run the battery downbefore recharging it. NiCad bat-teries have memories, whichmeans if you have a 30-minutebattery and continually rechargeit after 10 minutes, you’ll end upwith a 10-minute battery. If your

cordless equipment is poweredby a lithium-ion battery, charge itwhenever you’re done. If yourmower has a battery, make sureyou don't run it down completelybecause that could ruin it. Keepthe battery in charge mode so it

stays powered up.

• Clear your yard of rocks, twigs, wires and other debris tokeep from damaging equip-ment.

• Make sure to rake the lawn

before pulling out themower. Raking also helpsremove any dead grass andcan detangle any grass thathas become matted andstuck together.

• When using a stringtrimmer, make sure the tipof the spinning line doesmost of the cutting so asnot to overload the motor.Try a Remington electricstring trimmer that has an18-volt motor, 12-inch cut-ting swath and straightshaft.

• Never cut any branches, twigsor shrubbery with a string trim-mer, as they are too thick for thenylon string to cut. Rather, try aRemington hedge trimmer tokeep your shrubs looking neatand healthy.

According to a survey citedby the National Association ofHome Builders (NAHB), 89percent of people age 50 andolder desire to live in their cur-rent homes indefinitely.

However, not all homestoday meet the changing needsof aging adults or those withlimited mobility. Remodelersare continually searching forideas to meet the needs of aginghomeowners.

Thanks to a building conceptcalled “universal design,” manyolder adults are now living moresafely, comfortably and inde-pendently in their homes.Remodeling your home today —including choosing the best win-dow and door options — canhelp you better enjoy your cur-rent home for many years tocome.

need for buildings to keep pacewith changing lifestyles andneeds as occupants growolder,” said Gary Mathes,Pella’s manager of architecturalsupport services. “Pella designswindow and door solutions toaccommodate a variety of thoseneeds to make life easier.”

What is universal design?Universal design is based on

the theory that homes and busi-nesses should best serve thepeople who live and work inthem. It recognizes the diversi-ty in people and their varyingabilities.

“Universal design principleshelp make a building safer andmore comfortable for people ofall ages,” Mathes said. “Forexample, more spacious 36-inchwide doorways provide ampleroom for you to maneuver inand out whether you’re carry-ing a bag of groceries or con-fined to a wheelchair.”
