What are we breathing —clean or polluted air? It’s aquestion we should be con-

tinually asking ourselves. All of usface a variety of risks to our health aswe go about our day-to-day lives.

Driving in cars, flying in planes, en-gaging in recreational activities, andbeing exposed to environmental pol-lutants all pose varying degrees ofrisk. Some risks are simply unavoid-able. The good news is indoor air pol-lution is one risk that you can dosomething about.

Here are some facts to consider:

Indoor pollution sources thatrelease gases or particles into the airare the primary cause of indoor airquality problems in homes.

Inadequate ventilation can in-crease indoor pollutant levels by notbringing in enough outdoor air to di-lute emissions from indoor sourcesand by not carrying indoor air pollu-tants out of the home.

High temperature andhumidity levels can also in-crease concentrations ofsome pollutants.

The relative importanceof any single source de-pends on how much of agiven pollutant it emits andhow hazardous those emis-sions are. Some sources, such as building materials, furnishings and householdproducts like air fresheners, release pollutants more orless continuously. Othersources, related to activitiescarried out in the home, re-lease pollutants intermit-tently. These includesmoking, the use of solventsin cleaning and hobby activ-ities, the use of paint strip-pers in redecoratingactivities, and the use ofcleaning products and pes-ticides in housekeeping.

That’s why we at theBuilding Industry Associa-tion of Hawaii are so proudof the specifications and de-sign of The New HawaiianHome, which addresses in-door pollution. The homeoffers fresh air because the

windows are strategically located andsized to bring in trade winds; the airconditioners are split systems in thebedrooms only; and the home drawshot polluted air out through wallvents in the attic.

Safety first at

American ElectricMany homeowners are

looking for ways to up-grade their energy sys-

tems these days. We want ourhouses to be more efficient, eco-friendly and cost-effective.

Adding photovoltaic panels(PV) that turn sunlight into elec-tricity is one smart way to do it.But before going solar, homeown-ers should consider a thoroughinspection of their electricalwiring.

Why? Because putting PV pan-els on your home is essentially in-stalling a mini power plant onyour rooftop. And when it comesto older homes, adding new tech-nology to existing wiring couldcreate a hazardous situation.

Faulty wiring’s not something

to take lightly. According to theU.S. Fire Administration, it causesone in three electrical fires inurban areas, resulting in morethan 500 deaths and $800 milliondollars in annual property dam-age. And the fact that wiringproblems are often invisible be-cause they are hidden behindwalls, means conventional in-spections often are unable to de-tect such problems.

One local company believes sostrongly in the importance of tak-ing this safety step that it’s offer-ing free, state-of-the-artinspections with the purchaseand installation of any of its resi-dential PV systems.

American Electric’s Cur-rentSAFE program uses infrared

and ultrasonic technology to de-tect any weaknesses in yourhome’s wiring. The company alsois equipped to fix these potentialproblems before they becomereal hazards.

To work most effectively, PVsolar systems shouldn’t be ap-proached as a “one-size-fits-all”or “do-it-yourself” project.

“While we certainly appreciatepeople’s enthusiasm for solar en-ergy, we feel homeowners willbenefit from working with a com-pany like ours, with the propertraining, credentials and experi-ence,” says American Electricpresident Ray Hose.

And working with expert tech-nicians means your system willbe optimized. It will be config-

ured and installed to best addressyour home’s unique design andlocation, and your present and fu-ture energy needs.

So if you’re considering addingsolar energy to your home, tak-ing advantage of American Elec-tric’s free CurrentSAFEinspection makes a lot of sense.

And with more than 65 years ofexperience in Hawaii, AmericanElectric will be here today andtomorrow to meet all your elec-trical needs.

To learn more, call 440-5098(toll free 877-440-5098), or visitthe company’s website at AmericanElectricHomes.com.

Everyone needs toreplace windows intheir home from

time to time. But how doyou go about choosing the rightwindow and contractor?

Here are a few things to con-sider:

Qualityy off material. Whilemany vinyl windows look thesame, there is a wide difference inquality. This is the difference be-tween a window that breaksdown after five years and one that

operates efficiently for the life ofyour home. After 16 years in thewindow business, WindowsHawaii has isolated the most cost-effective brands that stand up tothe Hawaiian weather.

Our Anlin windows useMikron Vinyl. They are manu-factured for yachts, so theystand up to heavy salt exposureand direct sunlight. Plus, they’reguaranteed not to fade or crack.

Energyy efficiency. Even with-out air conditioning, a goodquality dual pane window cankeep your home cooler by atleast five degrees during thesummer months. Reputable win-dow brands like Anlin displaytheir energy ratings. This meanslower energy costs and morecomfort.

If you use an air conditioner, you will save 30 percent of yourenergy costs.

Anlinn windowss alsoo qualifyforr upp too $1,5000 in federall taxcredit.. But you must act quicklybecause this tax credit expires atthe end of the year.

Sound.. Lawnmowers? Barkingdogs? Road noise? Anlin win-dows are an industry leaderwhen it comes to sound protec-tion.

Security. Does the windowpass California Forced Entry re-quirements? Does is have dou-

ble-strength glass and cam-locks? All Anlin windows do.

Warranty. Three years? Fiveyears? At Windows Hawaii, weguarantee the installation for thelife of your home. And it is trans-ferable to the owner after you.

EZZ Cleann glass. Anlin win-dows come with EZ clean glass, which allows water and dirt tosheet off.

Installation. The best qualitywindow, improperly measured, looks bad and will most likelyleak in the future. That’s why it’simportant to purchase from aqualified window contractor, nota sub-contractor.

Reliabilitty. Deal with compa-nies that have a proven trackrecord of performance. Win-dows Hawaii is a licensed con-tractor and member of the BetterBusiness Bureau. Our installersare our employees, fully trainedand experienced in window in-stallation.

Kitchen remodeling can bea daunting task, but cab-inet refacing makes it

easier on many levels.Refacing can actually save

you money because it keeps theexisting cabinet boxes in place. With refacing, only the exteriorof the cabinets — doors, draw-ers and hardware — are re-placed. This means you canchange the entire look of thecabinets by choosing a newcolor and style.

Refacing also is an easy wayto update your kitchen at lessthan 50 percent of the cost ofbuying brand new. By not rip-ping the cabinets out of thekitchen, you save on labor andmaterials.

Many have that one problemarea: the pantry that seems tohave 10-year-old expired cansin the back; the corner cabinetthat you haven’t explored inyears; the lost corner cabinetthat you know has storage

space somewhere back there, but you just can’t get to it.

Essential Cabinet RefacingInc. can help you find solutionsto these problems by doing sim-ple carpentry modifications oradding some cabinet inserts orspecial hardware. Best yet, thejob need not cost you thou-sands of extra dollars to do it.

If a new kitchen is what youdesire, contact Essential Cabi-net Refacing Inc. immediately. The company builds new cus-

tom cabinets in its shop.Everything is made to orderby a team of skilled staffmembers. They have beenin business 21 years andpride themselves on high-quality work offered at rea-sonable, competitive prices.

They frame your favorite view and are key to mak-ing your home comfortable throughout the year, yet most people don’t think about them until they

stop working properly. But if your windows aren’t per-forming as well as they should, now is a great time to con-sider replacing them.

Until the end of 2010, the U.S. government’s ResidentialEnergy Efficiency tax credit can credit you with 30 per-cent of window material costs, up to $1,500, for makingqualifying efficiency upgrades to your home.

Poorly performing windows can account for 35 to 40percent of your home’s heat loss in the winter and areoften even less effective at keeping your home cool insummer. That’s literally throwing your money out the win-dow. Today’s double and triple-pane windows are worldsapart from the windows sold just 10 years ago.

Replacement window frames offer improved protectionfrom air and water infiltration over older windows, andthe energy-efficient innovations in glass options can reallymake a difference in your home’s comfort. To meet the

qualifications for the Energy Effi-ciency tax credit, Milgard Win-dows & Doors incorporatesadvanced technologies to improveyour home’s energy efficiency. ItsSunCoat Low-E glass and Edge-Gard thermal spacers provide theinsulating power needed to keepyour home comfortable all yearround. But the hundreds of combi-nations and choices can be over-whelming. To avoid dealing withan overly confusing list of windowchoices, the company offers en-ergy packages that configure the

window’s individual componentsfor you, based on your desired energy performance leveland geographic location.

Fall is here and, if you act soon, you can take advantageof the soon-to-expire tax credit for making valuable im-provements to your own home with replacement win-dows. To get started, you can find a qualified replacementwindow dealer by visiting milgard.com or by calling (800)645-4273.

HAWAIIRENOVATIONtips for thePerfect

For many Americans, remod-eling their kitchens tops thelist of home improvement

projects, and for several good rea-sons. Not only is the kitchen theheart of many homes — the cen-ter of family activity and homeentertaining — but remodelingyour kitchen is typically one ofthe smartest investments, oftengenerating a payback of 80 to 90percent on the cost of remodel atthe time of resale.

With thoughtful planning, re-modeling your kitchen is withinthe capability of many homeown-ers who want to attempt a do-it-yourself project. But, because thekitchen is so central to mosthomes, is interconnected withother spaces such as the familyand dining rooms, and becausethere is a fair amount of water(sink, dishwasher, garbage dis-posal) involved, a kitchen re-model project has the potential ofgoing horribly wrong.

Here are nine tips from TheTile Shop (tileshop.com), one ofthe nation’s largest tile retailers

for do-it-yourselfers and kitchenremodeling professionals, on howto create the kitchen of yourdreams:

1.. Considerr howw youu reallyy useyourr space. The first step in plan-ning your kitchen remodel is de-ciding what you want yourkitchen to do for you, and how itreflects the way you live. Do youwant an intimate place for drink-ing coffee and reading your dailynewspaper, a large spaciouskitchen that’s perfect for enter-taining, or a space that’s ideal forfamily projects and homework?

2.. Gett ideas. Start your plan-ning with a visit to a premiumtile or cabinet store that offersdisplays that show the latest inkitchen design, including the useof floor, wall and countertop ma-terials such as tiles, stone, andgranite. Read home improve-ment magazines, check outkitchen remodeling books fromthe library, visit friends whohave remodeled their kitchensrecently and check out modelhomes to see the latest in kitchen

design from today’s home-builders.

3.. Makee aa plan. Consolidateyour ideas and create a remodel-

ing plan and a budget. If you’regoing to remodel it yourself, don’tbe afraid to seek out informationon the latest in remodeling stan-dards. For example, The TileShop offers how-to videos on itswebsite, tileshop.com, and offershands-on seminars at its stores.

One simple rule of thumb.though: No matter how much youbudget for, add 20 percent tocover the unexpected costs thatcome up once you get into yourproject.

4.. Brinngg itt upp too code. Checkyour town or city’s website to re-

view or download building coderequirements related to kitchens— in particular codes for plumb-ing, electrical and windows. Evenif you’re doing it yourself, youmay need to pull a permit fromyour local town or city and obtainan inspection(s) for some ele-ments of your project, such aselectrical work.

5.. Includee popularr features. In-clude popular features in yourkitchen remodeling project tohelp at resale time, and to giveyour kitchen a more contempo-rary look and feel. Second sinks, custom cabinetry, a secondoven or microwave, an island, decorative glass and stone tile,

more storage space, betterlighting and extra-wide walltiles are among the mostpopular features in today’shomes.

6.. Respectt thee “kitchenworkk triangle.” The No. 1complaint about mostkitchens is that they’re dif-ficult to work in. Thekitchen work triangle is thatimaginary line between thecenter of the refrigerator, the center of the cooktopand the center of sink. Formaximum efficiency, thetotal distance of the linesthat make up this triangleshould be no more than 26feet.

7.. Keepp itt elegant. Focuson using materials and fix-tures that exude quality, warmth, and timelessness. To create an elegant, more

spacious look, considermarble or granite counter-tops, and stainless steel ap-pliances.

8.. Reducee clutter. Every-one likes a spacious, cleankitchen. For many kitchens, the greatest challenge toachieving more space iscutting the clutter and hid-ing items that you don’twant to see, such as stacksof mail, overflowing junkdrawers and cabinetsbulging with unused potsand pans. To achieve a lesscluttered look, keep the re-frigerator door clean, avoidplacing appliances too closetogether and creating tightspaces that are difficult toclean. Use large wall tiles toeliminate grout lines. Andadd storage to free up valu-able counter-top space.

Trendy and timeless, practical andwhimsical, durable and beautiful —when it comes to building materials,

ceramic tile wins the heart of many a de-signer and homeowner for its ability tooffer the best of many worlds. Technolog-ical advances and passionate designershave carried modern ceramic tile a longway from the basic, utilitarian looks of yes-teryear.

Home renovation and building go onyear-round, but as with any design state-ment, each season brings new looks andtrends. This autumn’s trends share a flairfor boldness and innovation. The ceramictile experts at Tile of Spain point to the hottrends to watch in ceramic tile this fall:

ColorStrong saturated tones such as mid-

night blue, royal purpleand deep chartreuse willjoin autumn’s traditionalpower hues of rich redsand burnt sienna. Reds areespecially dominant, ap-pearing in every shadefrom fiery orange-reds to

deep merlot. These powerful colors arepaired with linear and neutral whites, creams and soft grays to provide a high-contrast punch.

You’ll also see high-contrast colorschemes such as black and white. Thisfall’s tile collections also employ textureand geometry to underscore the contrastof light and shadow.

Softness and whimsy also have theirplace with gentle palettes of sky blue, blushing orange, lilac and rose impartingoptimism and childlike peace of mind.Highly stylized interpretations of classicmotifs and floral patterns add sophistica-tion to traditional themes. The messageof these lighter looks seems to be “Don’ttake life too seriously. Have a little funwith design.”

PatternFall pattern trends include micro and

macro patterns within a single tile, larger-than-life designs that incorporate multipletiles, and optical illusions. Drawing onconsumers’ continuing interest in the envi-ronment, tile makers are presenting entirecollections inspired by nature. You canfind tiles that mimic the texture of sanddunes, waves, tree bark and even rain.

Just as 3D has taken the movie scene bystorm, tile makers are using the concept infall patterns. Mind-bending effects are up-dating classic and mod styles. Designersare using dot-matrix screens, sometimes

with metallic glazes, to twist the eye.

TextureTexture lends nuances of shade and

tone through the play of light and shadow.Ceramic tiles always have been a goodmedium for textures. Digital technologyhas made it easy for tile makers to applytexture to a ceramic surface. New possibil-ities have emerged, such as tiles thatmimic the look of antique distressed woodand bush-hammered or chiseled stone.

SizeIt’s difficult to pin down a trend in size

these days, since technology has made itpossible for manufacturers to producetiles in a wide range of dimensions. Tilescan be as minute as 5/8 by 5/8 inches, oras grand as 4 feet by 4 feet. Some can evenbe made in 8-foot lengths. Slim tile contin-ues to be an evolving technology gainingwider appreciation from homeowners anddesigners. Slim tiles use fewer resourcesin every phase of the manufacturingprocess, enhancing their appeal for eco-conscious consumers. This tile format alsoworks well for a range of new applications, from cabinetry veneer and furniture topsto acoustical panels in ceiling applications.

As manufacturers and designers con-tinue to push innovation in technology andstyle, ceramic tile will continue to appealto homeowners and home builders for itsversatility, durability, beauty and eco-friendly qualities. You can learn moreabout ceramic tile at spaintiles.info.

As older adults age in placeand more householdsmake room for multiple

generations, how will Americansrespond to the home-improve-ment challenge?

Two important housing trendsare both emerging and mergingtoday: Older adults increasinglywant to “age in place,” while arecord number of householdshave united across multiple gen-erations. The second trend is inresponse to both the flaggingeconomy and to support elderparents’ desire to stay at home.

According to AARP, nearly 90percent of older Americans wantto remain in their homes as theyage. But unresolved barriers toconvenience and safety at homecan force them to relocate.

And while extended families

were common until World WarII, the practice waned with moreprosperous times. Now themulti-generational family home-stead is making a comeback. In2008, a record 49 million Ameri-cans lived in a household with atleast two adult generations, ac-cording to a Pew Research Cen-ter analysis of U.S. Census data.

If your home is reaching ca-pacity as family members bandtogether, you are likely facedwith a home-improvement chal-lenge. How can you inexpen-sively accommodate additionalfamily members under a singleroof, especially their need foradded bathrooms?

Onee iss neverr enoughCostly, messy and time-con-

suming conventional plumbing

can leave families stuck with asingle shared bathroom. Fortu-nately, there is a smart and inex-pensive way to increasebathroom privacy and conven-ience in any home, on any levelincluding the basement, even insmaller homes.

Saniflo macerating toilet andplumbing technology lets youadd a complete bathroom withan up flush toilet; and there’s noneed for expensive diggingthrough the floor to install newdrainage where none already ex-ists. If space is a problem, thesebathrooms can easily be installedin a closet or the area beneath astairway.

The up flush, or above-floorplumbing system, is installed di-rectly atop any finished floor oron basement concrete. The mac-

erating pump uses a fast-rotatingblade to reduce waste and paperfrom the toilet bowl, sending itunder high pressure through pip-ing directly into the septic orsewer system. Unlike sewageejectors, up flush toilets involveno storage of waste.

Thee sandwichh generationBaby boomers can get sand-

wiched in the middle of multi-generational living.

“Many boomers still have chil-dren at home and/or in college,”says Genevieve Liesemeyer, apartner with Pillar Design inMukwonago, Wisc. “Some mayhave one or more parents mov-ing in, too, while others haveadult children moving back inwith them. Saniflo products can

be a real problem-solver in thesecases.”

Have a Gen X-er moving inwith you? Why not add a base-ment bathroom? Need to helpgrandma, so she can stay at homelonger? Create a ground-floormaster suite with a full bath-room, so she won’t have to climbstairs. Whatever is motivatingyour modern multi-generationalhousehold, with up flush tech-nology, you can have a conven-ient extra bathroom anywhere, even in smaller homes.

You can learn more about low-cost, easy-to-install, above-floorbathroom systems by visitingsaniflo.com or calling (800) 571-8191.
