What does re-source effi-ciency really
mean in green building? Aresource is any physical orvirtual entity of limitedavailability that needs tobe consumed to ob-tain a benefit fromit. Efficiency is theextent to which a re-source is used forthe intended pur-pose.
The New Hawai-ian Home incorpo-rates resourceefficiency in allareas of design andconstruction requir-ing material con-sumption.
Homee size. De-signing the overall size ofthe home and interiorspaces of the home tomeet the intended use, paying close attention toavoid building more thanwhat is needed.
Lott orientation. Tak-ing full advantage of natu-ral resources: trade winds
for ventilation, sunlightfor natural lighting, sun-light to create electricity, and reclaimed water forirrigation.
Homee design.. Incor-porating products thatmitigate heat gain — such
as dual pane windows, in-sulation in the exteriorwalls, radiant barrier onthe roof and exteriorwalls.
Using materials thatcontain recycled contentand are recycled. Usingmaterials that are har-vested in sustainable prac-tices such as certified
lumber that comes fromforests that are replanted,as well as engineeredwood trusses and floorjoists.
Specifying rapidly re-newable materials such asbamboo flooring. Materialordering and sizing; de-
signing wall heights andceiling heights to standardmaterial sizes or multiplesof standard sizes to miti-gate waste.
Lott Design/Prepara-tion/Development.. Ap-plies to what is done tothe land during construc-tion. Before any work
commences, the land iswatered. A dust screen isbuilt around the site tocontrol dust going intoneighbors’ homes. It in-cludes preservation of ex-isting trees “if applicable,”and use of native vegeta-tion landscaping withplants appropriate to theclimate and grouped ac-cording to water needs. Itincludes impervious sur-faces to allow rainwater torecharge the yard and notrun off into storm drains.Exterior hardscape is de-signed to allow water tobe managed on the lotthrough driveways andwalkways. The use ofgravel and pavers to allowwater to percolate backinto earth.
It is the goal of TheNew Hawaiian Homeproject to educate con-tractors and suppliers andconsumers about greenbuilding and teach ownershow to live green.
Next week is the sixthand final element of greenbuilding: Educating own-ers on how to live green totake advantage of the fea-
tures integrated into thisprototype to cut operatingcosts.
Karen Nakamura is ex-ecutive vice president ofthe Building Industry As-sociation of Hawaii.

Did you know that the aver-age Hawaii homeownerwill spend more than
$100,000 on electricity over thenext 25 years? Although that’s astaggering amount, there is aneasy, sustainable solution to thatproblem.
Solar energy.By investing in a photovoltaic
solar system, Hawaii residents canvirtually eliminate their electric billfor the life of a system, which istypically 25 years. Thanks in partto generous federal and state taxcredits available, which pay up to
65 percent of the system’s cost, aphotovoltaic system will normallypay for itself within six to nineyears, based on current electricityrates.
To take advantage of those taxcredits, however, the system mustbe installed and generate powerbefore the end of this year. It’s nowonder then that Sep-tember to November isthe busiest season forsolar contractors. Butbeware during the peakseason as many solarcompanies often hire in-experienced workers tomeet demand.
“Because solar sales are some-what seasonal, it’s difficult for mostsolar companies to keep qualifiedemployees throughout the year.As a result, the workers drillingholes in your roof to attach thesolar system may be inexperienced
and learning as they go to keep upwith demand,” said Eric Carlson, principal with Hawaii’s solar ex-pert, RevoluSun. “We have beenfortunate to eliminate this problemby forming a partnership with oneof the most respected electricalcontractors in the state of Hawaii.Using their large, expertly trained
work force, we never have a short-age of qualified workers. This en-sures that the job will be done rightevery time.”
Here are some tips on how topick a reputable solar contractor:
• Do your homework. Researchthe company to ensure it has theproper licensing.
• Visit the Hawaii Departmentof Commerce & Consumer Affairsat hawaii.gov/dcca or visit the Reg-ulated Industries Complaints Of-fice at hawaii.gov/dcca/rico to seeif the firm you are planning to
work with has received anycomplaints and the out-comes of those complaints.
• Interview the solar com-pany to find out the qualifi-cation of its installers andthe firm’s protocol forscheduling installations. Beup front and determinewhat kind of recourse youwill have should the worknot be completed on time,on budget, and with no mis-takes.
Hawaii’s solar energy expert,RevoluSun, has a proven record ofexcellence. The company’s part-ners have overseen the sales, de-sign and installation of $30 millionin solar systems, which accountedfor 30 percent of all renewable en-ergy systems in Hawaii in 2008.
Visit revolusun.com or call 748-8888 to learn more about the com-pany.

Is limescale cloggingyour appliances, spot-ting your dishes and
leaving residue every-where?
Hydrocare, a green andefficient water treatmentsolution, may be just theproduct that solves all ofthe above and more, andit’s offered through NanoTek-On LLC.
How does it work? Onepatented unit transmits a
unique radio frequencysignal that effectivelybreaks up existinglimescale that clogs pipes, showers and appliances.Hydrocare also will pre-vent any future buildup, protecting the entireplumbing system and in-creasing efficiency.
Since limescale existswithin pipes and appli-ances, the changes will notbe readily visible. You may
see the traces of limescalebreaking down on yourshower doors and bathtub, however. The results willbe more apparent overtime as the hot water be-comes hotter, the spottingon dishes becomes less, and bathtubs, sinks andshower doors become eas-ier to clean.
With Hydrocare, you’llnever have to worry aboutmaintenance, bags of salt
and filters. You’ll alsonever have to worry abouta change in chemical com-position of the water, orwhether essential mineralsfor healthy drinking andgood taste are retained thewater.
You will, however, savethousands of gallons ofwater, increase your energysavings (up to 30 percentincrease efficiency in heat-ing water), and extend thelife of your entire plumbingsystem and appliances. Ad-ditionally, you’ll benefitfrom an environmentallyfriendly product that doesnot change the chemicalcomposition of the water.
Nano Tek-On offers athree-year warranty onparts, while HydroCare of-fers a one-year perform-ance guarantee.
For more information onHydrocare, contact NanoTek-On at 395-2996, or visitthe website, tekonhawaii.com.

Solar energy systemsare generally pre-sented to the con-
sumer with the emphasison tax credits and energysavings. Pacificc IslandsConstruction feels that themore one knows about thispurchase as an informedbuyer, the better the choiceof systems will be. The fol-
lowing information de-scribes particular detailsabout solar panels or sys-tems we believe will ex-plain the nuances of thisindustry.
Peak panel efficiency isan issue the consumerneeds to become familiarwith. All panels come witha listed power rating. The
peak panel efficiency rat-ing is shown on modulespec sheet in the pmax line. The rating will show thepanel having a pmax of say230 watts with a toleranceof plus (+) or minus (-). A230-watt panel with a pmaxrating of + 5/-5 is tellingyou that the panel may ex-ceed the listed rating or itmay provide less energy,up to as much as 5 percent. The module may only pro-duce 219 watts rather the230 watts listed on thepanel, thus it’s less efficientthan what the consumer isled to believe. The lowerefficiency is acceptable tothe manufacturer and thistolerance contradicts thelisted rating. Most con-sumers are unaware of thisat the time of purchase. Why do they produce less?Usually it is because ofmicro fractures in the crys-talline contained in the
modules andother manufac-turing nuancesthat may causeelectrical resist-ance in the pan-els. Thesefractures become hot spotsin the modules, and hotspots produce less energy.A general rule of thumb isto subtract the negativenumber from the panel rat-ing to get a true idea ofwhat power it will pro-duce.
The two basic types ofsolar modules are calledmono-crystalline and poly-crystalline. Mono-crys-talline modules containlarger, uniformly stackedrounded cells while poly-crystalline contain smallercrystal cells fused together. The crystals are grown intwo sizes with the largermono-crystalline beingmore expensive to grow. It
appears that the larger thecrystal, the more likely itwill have micro fractures.Recent demand for solarhas encouraged willingmanufacturers to releaseimperfect products ratherthan reject these crystals.Solar modules with moreimperfections and microfractures will produce lessenergy. It is important forthe consumer to checkwhere the panel is manu-factured and to look formanufacturers who do nottolerate a lower-than-listedefficiency rating.
The other industry issueconcerns the lack of energythat is produced with lowradiance. Radiance is theenergy that the modules
use to excite the electronsto make the electricity. Arecent forum of leaders inthe industry questionedhow the industry was goingto go forward with the lackof candor concerning howthe modules displayed upto 10 percent less energyproduction under low radi-ance conditions. Low radi-ant conditions include earlymorning and late afternoonhours as well as cloudydays.
Pacific Islands Construc-tion encourages the con-sumer to find out as muchinformation as possibleabout solar energy prior tomaking a purchase.

Mixed up by mod-ern? Confused bywhat’s considered
contemporary? With moreemphasis on home designtoday, it can be difficult forhomeowners to distin-guish among the array ofdesign styles.
Contemporary (or“modern”) is characterizedby clean lines and smoothsurfaces without intricatedetails. But that doesn’tmean your home will lookstark, cold and sterile. Longgone are the days of boxyfurniture and eccentricdecorating. Today’s up-dated contemporary look isa blend of comfortable, liv-able elements that create asophisticated, fresh feel.
To create this look inyour home, start by incor-porating these five key ele-ments: color, metalaccents, texture, wood toneand lighting.
Colorr Contemporary design is
offset by neutral colorpalettes. When paintingthe walls, choose shades ofbrown, taupe, cream orpure white. However, neu-tral does not mean boring,so be sure to infuse theroom with small splashesof a more vibrant, boldcolor. This may includepainting one wall with anaccent color, adding a boldred sofa, or adding vividaccessories, such as deco-rative pillows, towels, rugsor art. Just be sure not toover-accessorize — thekey to contemporary de-sign is simplicity.
Metall accentsStainless steel, nickel
and chrome metals areprevalent in contempo-rary design, providing adecorative framework ofsleek finishes. Furniture,
end tables, lampsand even bathroomfixtures featuringbeautiful metal ac-cents provide thislook in all rooms ofthe home. In thebath, the Finafaucet from Show-House features softmodern style cueswith a high-arc,marquise-shapedspout, lever handlesand a contempo-rary-shaped base. The beautifully designedfaucet also features aflow-optimized aerator forwater savings.
TextureTo offset the clean,
smooth lines of the metalaccents, use fabrics suchas silk, crushed velvet, linen or wool in yourroom to add texture andcreate a more natural,
inviting feeling. In thebathroom, this may in-clude fluffy rugs, towelsor fabric shower curtains. In family rooms, thiscould include over-stuffedpillows, window treat-ments or the furniture up-holstery. Texture also canbe added to walls. Newwallpapers made of linencan be an interesting wayto add depth to the verti-cal surfaces of the room.
But one word of caution— stay away from elabo-rate patterns or intricatedetails when choosing fab-rics, as this will confusethe clean, contemporarylook you are trying toachieve.
WoodWhen it comes to wood
surfaces, contemporarydesigns bring out the ex-tremes, featuring very
light or very dark tones. When incorporatingwoods into your design, look beyond the coffeetable and utilize wood sur-faces in accessories suchas picture frames, largedramatic flower pots orshelves. Feel free to mixthe design styles of thewood accessories, but beconsistent with the woodtone and carry it through-out the room for a profes-sional appearance.
LightingLighting is extremely
important in contempo-rary design, often seen asthe key to illuminating theroom’s design. Whenchoosing lighting for yourhome, there are many newchoices available that pro-vide interesting, cleanlines. Track lighting orfloor lamps are popular incontemporary design andoften utilize metals or boldcolors to reinforce theother metal accessories orsplashes of color incorpo-rated into the room.

New Construction Remodels Maintenance Trouble Calls
One of the easiest waysto simplify your morn-ing routine is to have an
organized closet. Unfortu-nately, clothes tend to languishat the bottom of piles, shoesget pushed into dark corners, and finding what you want towear becomes a hassle. Know-ing where to start can seemoverwhelming — but it doesn’thave to be.
The most important tip for astreamlined closet is to divideyour wardrobe into seasons, then store pieces in the base-ment or attic. There are somespecial considerations to makewhen keeping your off-seasonclothes in a garage, basementor attic, but with a little advice
from an expert, storing will nolonger be difficult or time con-suming.
According to Barry Izsak, organizing expert and formerpresident of the National As-sociation of Professional Orga-nizers (NAPO), most peopledo not properly store their off-season wardrobe by remem-bering to protect againstinsects and rodents. “Does itmake sense to go through allthe trouble of storing yourvaluable clothing and not dowhat you can to avoid an infes-tation of bugs and mice?”
“It’s not enough to use tight-fitting plastic containers or en-closed garment bags,” saysIzsak. The garments that have
been stored can become desir-able nesting areas for house-hold pests so takingprecautions to protect them isessential.
To organize your closet andsuccessfully transition yourwardrobe, simply follow thesequick tips from Izsak. Beforestoring:
• Determine if a piece isworth storing by asking: “Doesit still fit?” “Do I still wear it?”“Do I still need it?” “Do I stilllove it?”
• Empty all pockets and laun-der or dry-clean your clothes.
• Make necessary alterationsor repairs.
Then:
• Take an inventory to logwhat you have, as well as whatyou need. Bring this list to anyoff-season sales to avoid pur-chasing too many of one itemand not enough of another.
• Place scented fabric sof-tener sheets in with yourstored clothing to keep themsmelling fresh.
Remember:
• Do not store clothing indry-cleaner bags, as the plasticdoes not allow the fabric tobreathe and can yellow clothesover time.
• If storing in a bedroom, re-serve the highest shelf in thecloset or utilize the spaceunder the bed. Use plastic con-tainers, zippered garment bagsor under-bed storage boxesthat fit the space.
Being smart about out-of-season wardrobe storage cankeep “organizing the closet”off the dreaded “to-do” list, and part of the regular rou-tine.

Germs and bacteriaare everywhere, in-cluding the place
you strive to keep thecleanest: your home. Toshield against germs, con-sumers are spending morethan $1 billion annually onantimicrobial products, ac-cording to the Environmen-tal Protection Agency(EPA).
“Because of viruses likeH1N1 and other householdgerms, consumers are tak-ing every precaution neces-sary to keep themselvesand their families healthy, and that starts at home,”says Jackie Cooper, seniordirector of marketing andcommunications for Eu-reka. “With consumerslooking for products that
will help keep the germsand bacteria at bay, thereare now many optionsavailable to create a healthyliving space.”
Cooper offers the follow-ing tips to achieve a cleanand germ-free home:
• Don’t let them in. Manygerms and bacteria maketheir way into your homeby tagging along with you.Once in the house, thesemicroorganisms have anice, safe place to grow andmultiply. Cut germs off at
the door by keeping antimi-crobial wipes or hand sani-tizers near the entrances toyour home. This way you—and your guests — canfight bacteria on the spot.
• Vacuum often. Tacklethe germs that already havebeen tracked into yourhome by using a vacuumwith a bacteria-fighting so-lution to not only suck updust and dirt, but preventbacteria from growing in oron the vacuum as well. Eu-reka’s FilterAir vacuum is
treated with On-Guard An-timicrobial which inhibitsthe growth of bacteria onthe brushroll and in specificparts of the dust cup.
• Beware of the kitchenand bathroom. Don’t forgetthat germs also like to hangout in places like the
kitchen sink wherepathogens such as salmo-nella and E. coli can befound. Although well-in-tentioned, the kitchensponge you use to clean isonly helping to spreadthose germs throughoutyour kitchen. To kill germson the sponge, the U.S. De-
partment of Agriculturerecommends microwavingit on full power for oneminute. To protect yourhands from germs, keepbacteria fighting soap suchas Lysol AntimicrobialSoap near the sink to usewhen working in thekitchen.

In today’s environmentallyconscious times, it seemswe’re surrounded by the need
to shop, act and live “green.”Some of our choices are easy andsmall, while others can be big andcostly. One thing is for sure —each choice can make a signifi-
cant difference. But as many of usknow from experiences of tryingto diet, the most successful long-term changes we make shouldn’tmake us feel as if we are “givingup” the small pleasures that weenjoy.
According to Ed Detgen at
Danze Inc., some ofthe most importantgreen choices we canmake involve deci-sions to live moregreen within our ownhome. But what doesliving green reallymean?
“For some of us itmay mean putting inEnergy Star appli-ances or energy-effi-
cient windows,” says Detgen.“And for others it could be evalu-ating in-home water usage.”
It’s the latter that Detgen be-lieves could be one of the sim-plest and most significant stepsany of us can take. “Water short-ages, energy demands and the
cost of transporting water are allon the rise,” he says. “Findingways to simply reduce our usagewithout dramatically altering ourlifestyle could save billions of gal-lons of water each year in theUnited States.”
Detgen offers up these tips onhow you can immediately startconserving water (and savemoney) in your home:
• Replace older toilets (1992 orearlier) with newer, high-effi-ciency models. They operate at1.28 gallons per flush and couldsave 11 gallons of water per toiletper day. According to Detgen,Danze has several new HETs(high-efficiency toilets) that out-perform and are more stylish than
many toilets found in currenthomes.
• Be sure to turn off the tapwhen brushing your teeth. Doingso could save nearly 3,000 gallonsof water per year.
• Always turn the water off be-tween tasks. Letting your faucetrun for five minutes uses about asmuch energy as letting a 60-wattlight bulb run for 14 hours.
• Make sure to wash only fullloads of laundry. Using a high-ef-ficiency washing machine is ideal,as they use about 28 gallons ofwater per load, versus an averagemachine that uses 41 gallons.
• Take a shower rather than abath. A full bathtub requires up to70 gallons of water, while takinga five-minute shower uses 10 to 25gallons.
If all the water-saving, greenchoices still have you over-whelmed, select one tip at a timeand incorporate it into your home.Looking for other tips? Visit theEPA’s WaterSense website.
