For many households, October marksthe beginning of the holiday season. For us, it’s also the beginning of our

busy food season. Halloween treats tow theline for Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas cookiesand New Year’s Eve pupus, not to mentionthe many “chilly” nights we opt to stay in andenjoy some comfort food at home.

With the influx of extra dirty dishes, thedishwasher is bound to put in some over-time, so I decided to look into what we cando to help it out. Use these five tips to help a

dishwasher that’s not running up to par runmore efficiently. Or, use them to ensure thata good one stays that way.

1. Choose gel over powder. Gel dis-solves quicker and easier than powder, whichresults in more soapy time in the cleaningprocess. Plus, powder has been known tostick around, leaving residue on dishes evenafter the load has finished. ConsumerReports found the pod/pack/tab variety tohave the highest ratings compared to tradi-

tional detergents, but at a cost of about threetimes more per load. For me, the gel worksjust fine. 2. Unclog the holes. Examine the areaswhere water sprays out. Food and gunk canclog the holes, making the dishwasher lessefficient. Use a skewer to clear them up.3. Clean the filter. On the bottom of thedishwasher, sometimes under a cover, lies a fil-ter. Take off the cover, but remember not toforce it. You may need to use a butter knife forleverage, but it should come off easily. Cleanthe filter underneath. Warning: This can bepretty gross. It’s the place where everythinggoes that doesn’t fit down the drain. I recom-mend wearing gloves. 4. Keep cleaning. Open the dishwasherand find the steam vent on the door. Again, there may be a cover here. If there is, take itoff, but be careful not to force it. Clean it, anddon’t forget the gloves. 5. Get out the vinegar. Run an empty

load with a cup of white vinegar tossed onthe bottom. This will help clean the dishwash-er and remove hard water and calciumdeposits from the drain and jets. Do this oncea month.

Remember, the point of using a dishwasheris to save time. Keeping it in tip-top shapemay require some extra effort, but it will saveyou in the long run.

Step inside the door at 2841 PukoloaSt. and you’ll find two of the mostcomplete showrooms displaying the

finest in residential appliances and garagedoors in Hawaii. Some might think this is anunusual combination of products to display, but both categories are integral parts of anynew or remodeled home. That is why archi-tects, builders, contractors and designerssend their clients to visit The Servco Home &Appliance Showroom to select premium res-idential appliances and garage doors.

The Servco Home & Appliance show-room displays the complete appliance lineupfrom General Electric — including GE, GEProfile, GE Café and GE Monogram — innine vignettes and one live kitchen. You mayrecognize the live monogram kitchen as theone used by Manolo Morales of the KHON2show WakeUp 2day to highlight local chefs. Itwas also used by chefs from 53 By the Sea,Honolulu’s newest fine dining restaurant, toperfect recipes before their kitchen opened.

The showroom also features appliancesfrom Bosch, Thermador and Gaggenau.Check out the amazing Thermador FreedomInduction Cooktop and the only pro rangewith star burners and a steam/convectionoven. You can also try to tell if one of theworld’s quietest dishwashers is actually run-ning or not — it’s just that quiet!

The live kitchens are a great place to putappliances to the test. See how fast the induc-tion cooktop can boil water or how effectivea hood can be. The kitchens are even avail-able to use should you want to test the capa-bilities of one oven compared to another.

The showroom also displays a completeline of undercounter refrigerators and winereserves from U-Line and wall, chimney andisland hoods from Broan and Best. We alsoshow washers and dryers from GE andBosch, as well as outdoor cooking and barbe-cue units from GE Monogram and Vintage. Finally, we display sinks and faucets fromFranke, KWC, Hansa and Rohl.

The Servco Home & Appliance Showroomis not a retail store, so nothing here is solddirectly to the public. Rather, Servco productspecialists are on hand to help each visitor tothe showroom make their appliance selectionin a “no-pressure” environment. Clients arethen sent back to their dealer, designer or con-

tractor with a list of items they want, alongwith any specifications they may need.

Homeowners have known for years thatremodeling a kitchen or bathroom canrecoup as much or more than the cost of thejob. However, recent studies in Honolulu haveshown that replacing old, worn garage doorscan actually recoup the homeowner 120-180percent of the job cost depending on thequality and features of the garage door. This isbecause of the property’s enhanced curbappeal with a new, attractive garage door. There is no better place to select a garagedoor than at the Servco Raynor OverheadDoor showroom.

This showroom shares the space with theappliance showroom, and there you’ll find themost complete garage door showroom inthe state. It displays two large, fully function-ing, eight-foot-wide garage doors — the ultrastylish Raynor StyleView and the classicRaynor Affina. There are also another 10 sin-gle-car garage doors visible.

The Raynor StyleView offers architecturalflexibility, maximum visibility and extremedurability in a maintenance-free aluminumdoor. The various models feature a series of

unprecedented designs, architectural glassoptions and 187 ArmorBrite color finishes. From modern styles to classic facades,StyleView is the choice for achieving a con-temporary look or enhancing the design ofan older home.

The Affina is the flagship of the RaynorInnovations Series and is available in threestandard and 12 optional door designs. Thetwo-inch-think door sections are constructedof hot-dipped galvanized steel and coatedwith a baked-on, fade-resistant finish. TheAffina doors feature an energy-savingpolyurethane core and include EnduraCotehardware and track for long life.

Among the other doors is the RaynorArborShore, which utilizes vertical grain, fullymatured Western Red Cedar in a uniform,wood-tone consistency. You’ll also see doorsfrom CHI and Amarr, and Servco Raynor dis-plays new, high-tech operators from Raynor,Linear and Synoris.

The Servco Raynor Overhead Door teamwill visit your home at no obligation, measureyour space and finalize your order before weschedule the installation of your new door.

Whether you are building a new home orremodeling, be sure to visit the two Servcoshowrooms at 2841 Pukoloa St.

References are important whenselecting a contractor for yourhome building project. During the

process of choosing your contractor, meeting and talking to families that havebeen through the process of building willgive you a good indication of what toexpect for your own home project. It isideal to have a non-biased report fromsomeone whose shoes you will be wear-ing soon.

There are a few different ways toreceive this information. A majority ofcompanies follow the traditional way ofmaking it available to you. AtlasConstruction has found unique ways togive you the information that you need tomake an informed decision.

There are different ways to get a refer-ence for a potential contractor. The mostcommon one would be a letter that a per-

son composes at the end of a project, giv-ing you a general idea of how the contrac-tor performed. Oftentimes these letterstend to be very general with no details. The progress of Internet websites andstreaming video capabilities allow AtlasConstruction to have video testimonieson its website, which you may view tohear firsthand accounts from familieswhom the company has done work for.

Another less-common way of receivinga reference is by actually speaking with aprevious client. Usually this is done over

the phone, which gives you the opportu-nity to ask specific questions that you haveabout the contractor and his or her work.Atlas Construction gives you this oppor-tunity by allowing you to select from acomplete list of past clients whom thecontractor has done work for — withmore than 100 families to choose from.Still, another unique way AtlasConstruction helps you learn about con-tractors is by introducing you to familieswho have gone through the buildingprocess.

Atlas Construction offers you a way tomeet families and individuals, and speakwith them directly. Each month at a con-tractor’s open house, the families areavailable to greet you at their newly builthomes and share their experiences withyou. This allows you to hear firsthand whathappens during a construction projectand what you may expect on your ownhome project. This unique way of allowingpotential families to access referenceinformation on the company becomes auseful tool in choosing a contractor.

Your home is probably the biggestfinancial asset that you own. Unlike acar, computer or big screen, it is an

asset that will appreciate instead of go downin value each year. So, it makes financial senseto invest in it, and protect that investment.

Did you know that Anlin energy-efficientdoors and windows give a 120-percentreturn on your initial investment? And, likeyour home, that investment will appreciateyear after year.

Windows Hawaii guarantees the installa-tion of Anlin doors, windows and siding foryour home for the life of your home — awarranty that is transferable if you sell yourhome.

But that isn’t the best part. How about aninvestment that grows in value over time aswell as:

• Improves the appearance of your home.Make your home look new with new win-dows and siding. It can benefit from a faceliftafter 40 years!

• Makes your home more secure. Jalousiewindows are easily broken into. Anlin win-

dows are top rated for security with “cam”locking systems, double-strength glass anddead-bolt locks that allow you to lock yourwindows open so you get the breeze youwant without sacrificing security.

• Maintenance-free. Anlin windows haveNeat glass, which repels dirt and does not

water spot. The Mikron vinyl framesare easy to clean and do not corrodeor pit like aluminum in Hawaii’s saltyenvironment.

• Long lasting. Our acrylic/vinyl siding willlast a lifetime and you will never need topaint again. This siding also adds insulation toyour home and is a deterrent to termites. Our Hardie cement-board siding looks likewood, but will not weather like wood, and isimpervious to termites.

• Makes your home more comfortable.Anlin windows with the dual pane andInfinitE energy coating will keep your homecooler during the summer months. If youuse air conditioning, you will save up to 35percent of your energy costs each month.

W hen discussing the “golden rule” in home con-struction, we are not talking about the gold colorof a contractor’s tape measure. We are discussing

fairness and ethics. Everybody wants to be treated fairly, right? We located a residential general contracting construc-tion company in Honolulu that operates by this principleand rule of treating others the same way that they wouldlike to be treated when conducting business.

Town & Country Builders LLC is a licensed general con-tracting design build firm that has been serving Oahu resi-dents for the past 32 years. The company specializes in newand custom homes, remodels, second-story additions, designer kitchens, bathrooms, Americans with Disability Act(ADA) modifications/improvements as well as multi gener-ational homes, and offers full construction services includingplanning and permitting.

In order to break through the clouds of confusion andmayhem preceding and during any new construction orremodeling process, there must be clarity from the begin-ning, and an understanding between parties must bereached and agreed upon before any project proceeds. Eachproject should begin with a clear and concise proposal fromthe building contractor that defines the scope of work. Whatis a proposal? It is a written document that explains what thecontractor will complete for a fixed dollar amount.

Here are some examples of poorly written proposalsthat, if agreed upon among the constituents (homeownerand contractor), may lead to disagreements and/or possiblecourt action because the scope of work was not explainedproperly. For example:

1) Construct a concrete pad at the rear of thehouse.

What more needs to be said about this description? Let’sbegin with the location — left, right or middle of the home? What is the size , thickness of the concrete and PSI (poundsper square inch) of the concrete? What will the concretefinish look like? Will it be decorative with a salt finish, broomfinish or smooth?

2) Remodel the kitchen for $20,000

3) Enclose a garage for $12,000

I’m certain that you understand the message conveyed bynow that these types of proposals do not adequatelydescribe the scope of work, are doomed for failure and dis-agreement, and are unacceptable trade practice. Thesetypes of proposals may or may not have been written thisway intentionally. Demand more from your contractor andat the end of the day, both parties will be the beneficiary ofa smooth construction project.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Every weekwhen I read your column, I always think, “Ineed to do what you suggest,” but I neverseem to get around to it. Somehow I think itwould be more motivational if you told meabout things that I shouldn’t do or shouldn’thave in my environment. Are there definitefeng shui “no-nos” (besides clutter) that Ishould be aware of?

Icompletely understand. Even though Igenerally like to make change from amore positive vantage point, I will shift

my focus for those who want to approachchange from the “do not” perspective.Sometimes the “dos” fail to fully addressthe “don’ts,” so this is an opportunity toclarify the energy blockages that may nothave been addressed by the “dos.”

First of all, I’d like to preface my feng shuidon’ts with a few important words. If youencounter a “don’t” in your environmentthat you cannot accommodate or do notfeel right about, you are not doomed, yourfeng shui is not bad, and your life is notmessed up.

Although many things can negativelyimpact the good vibes in a home, not oneis strong enough to doom your life. Fengshui supports your life by minimizing theenergetic negatives and maximizing thepositives. And, for the record, I have neverseen a home (including mine) with perfectfeng shui.

Here are my top four Feng Shui “no-nos:”

• Dead plants, dirty silk plants, “cob-webby” potpourri or old disintegratingleis. Anything representing “life force” iseither physically alive or looks alive, or isalive in your heart in the form of a mem-ory. To support you energetically, yourplants need to thrive and be healthy. When your plants are dead or dying, theyare losing their energy and emanate theenergetic message that you too are los-

ing your energy. Silk plants can be excellent substitutes

for live plants, however, letting them gatherdust brings in “dead” energy and lowers thevibe. Potpourri is great when fresh and aro-matic, but when it loses its aroma andstarts to form cobwebs, it is time to discardit. Dried leis that have special meaning andevoke happy memories outweigh the ener-getic negative of being “dead,” unless theyno longer evoke those happy memories oryou no longer need a visual reminder ofthose happy times.

• Beds positioned tightly against a wall.A bed pushed into a corner cuts off natural

energy flow, especially when you are sleep-ing. Symbolically, sleeping on a bed pushedagainst a wall creates limiting energy thatdetracts from your ability to make choicesand leaves no room for romance to enteror blossom in your life.

Positioning the bed so that it is free andclear of the wall, allows the energy ofempowerment into your life. If you lackthe space to move the bed far enoughaway from the wall, move it out as much asyou can.

• Broken or dysfunctional things. Fixappliances, household items and plumbing, electrical and structural systems as soon asthey need repair. Treat anything broken inyour home with the same respect that youwould a family member. A broken or dys-functional item is akin to a sick family mem-ber, so tend to it immediately.

When your home is “unhealthy,” noticehow it affects you. Plumbing representsyour financial health, while the electricalwiring in your home represents your men-tal health, and structural issues representyour physical body issues, especially bones, skin and teeth. Keep your home flowingwith healthy energy so that it supportsyour family members’ health.

• Blocked, dark or scary entrances.Keep the entrance to your home clear andclean. Your architectural front door iswhere energy enters. If people have toduck under tree branches or step over gar-den equipment, your entrance is workingagainst you.

The entrance is the “mouth” of yourhome. Like your physical mouth, keep itclean and tidy. In the same way that youwould not want to cozy up to someonewho has poor oral hygiene, the energydoes not want to come near a dirty orunkempt entrance. An entrancing entranceis an invitation to good energy.

In conclusion, there’s something you cando in your home today that turns a “no-no” into a “yes-yes!”

More is not always better!

At times, less can be better, espe-cially when it comes to undesir-able commitments, obligations

and unfulfilling work. Today, make “sub-traction” a focus in your home. Subtractsomething from your bulletin board, memorabilia display, visible shelves, maga-zine piles, make-up drawer or obligatorysocial calendar, and delete old texts and

junk emails. By doing so, youwill “add” to the energybank of your vital life force.

Each year, House Beautiful magazinebuilds its highly anticipated Kitchenof the Year, a showplace for what’s

hot in the kitchen. Designed around the lat-est trends, the annual Kitchen of the Year isthe epitome of high-end style. But let’s faceit: The majority of us don’t have the luxuryof a 1,000-square-foot kitchen designed bya celebrated designer. Nor do we have thebudget.

Don’t give up on your kitchen designdreams just yet. There are several ways tobring a high-end look to your home with-out the high price. With a little inspiration, research and proper planning, you can havea picture-perfect kitchen that will look asthough it’s been lifted from the pages ofthe top home design magazines. Get start-ed creating your dream kitchen with thesetips:

Be inspiredBrowse magazines, home design blogs

and websites like Pinterest or Houzz togather inspiration. Take note of the kitchensthat catch your eye and what it is that youlike most about the design. Many of the

things that you’re drawn to are within yourbudget.

Assess your spaceTake stock of the space you currently

have and consider the layout and the work

triangle. A smart layout can create a morespacious and efficient kitchen no matterthe square footage.

Design for your styleWhether your style is classically tradi-

tional or more contemporary, there arecabinets, appliances and fixtures to fit.Whether your budget is under $10,000 ormore than $50,000, you’ll take pride in hav-ing a kitchen that was designed with yourstyle and needs in mind.

Get helpIt’s easy to be tempted with extras during

the kitchen design process, and costs canquickly add up. Work with a professionaldesigner to set and manage the budget, andhelp determine areas to invest and whereto cutback. If you’re drawn to elements ofluxury kitchens, share that with your design-er for ways to achieve a similar look.

Let cabinetry set the stageThe cabinetry you choose can set the

stage for the entire kitchen. While manyhigh-end kitchens will have custom cabi-nets, you can achieve a similar look withsemi-custom cabinetry at a fraction of thecost and without the extended lead times. For example, KraftMaid Cabinetry offersflexibility with its vast selection of doorstyles, finishes and decorative enhance-ments that span the spectrum of designtastes and price points.

Customize with colorCombining contrasting colors, textures

and materials creates visual interest andcan make your kitchen look custom. Tryadding some color by varying cabinetry

Remodeling a kitchen can be stressful

on you and your wallet, but if you’re com-mitted to your design dream, it’s likelyyou’ll find ways to achieve it.

This article is courtesy of ARAcontent.

Aremodeled kitchen is the fondestdream of many homeowners. Butif you’re on a budget, there’s a

great alternative: spending $100 or so togive your kitchen cabinets a whole newlook with paint. Here’s how to do it:

• Visit the websites of major paint compa-nies, where you’ll find idea centers with paintpalettes designed by professional colorists. On many, you’ll find idea centers with paintpalettes designed by professional colorists, and “visualizing” tools that allow you to pre-test your color choices online.

• Once you’ve settled on a color scheme,it’s time to paint. Remove the cabinetdoors, as well as the hinges and knobs. If

you’re going to re-use the hardware, putthese items in a plastic bag for safekeeping.

• Scrub the cabinets with a degreasing solu-tion to remove dirt and grime. When they’vedried, sand them to remove loose paint.

• Next, apply a top quality latex primer tothe cabinets. Use a roller wherever possi-ble, and a small brush where necessary.Let the primer dry overnight.

• Finish the cabinets in the same way byapplying a coat of top-quality, 100-percentacrylic latex paint.

A great recipe for affordable kitchen remodeling

Page 16: Hawaii Renovation October 14, 2012

By now, everyone has heard the lat-est buzz word: Repurpose. It’s allabout going green, being conscious

about our environment, to quit dumpinginto landfills and to find a way to use whatwe already have. Look at Reuse Hawaii:People are going in droves to find oldpieces of wood to turn into works of art, furniture and “new” flooring.

Well, guess what? You can do the same. When I was asked to stage the model

apartment at 680 Ala Moana forKamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, Ilooked for weeks for the perfect sofa —but to no avail. Eventually, however, I found asofa that was perfect in terms of size andlines, but although the cushions and structurewere solid, the upholstery was outdated.

So I decided to reupholster it. I found anamazing modern fabric at PHF, very neutralin tone with a cream base and camel-col-ored print. This allowed me to customizemy sofa for the exact effect I wanted.

Reupholstering an entire sofa can runyou anywhere from $550 to $800 — notincluding the fabric. Depending on the sizeof the sofa, the whole thing, including base, cushions and back, will take anywhere from9 to 14 yards of fabric. However, if youalready have a great piece of furniture, itmay be more affordable and stylish to gothis route than to buy a completely newsofa that isn’t exactly what you want.

It’s much easier to reupholster diningand accent chairs with seat cushions thatcan be easily popped out. You just need tofind upholstery fabric and a staple gun. Ifyou’re not handy with a staple gun or areworried about breaking a nail, go to an

upholsterer.Let’s talk now about

another creative, inexpen-sive solution. For the 680Ala Moana project, I alsoneeded to find the perfectdining table. In my newconsignment warehouse,reStyle Hawaii, we had areally cool side table thatwas essentially a treetrunk. It was the perfect

base for my apartment-size dining table, except for one thing — it was too low!

In order to raise the height so that Icould put a glass top on it to create a din-ing table, I had large acrylic dowels cut to3-inch lengths as columns to elevate theheight of the table and create a stand formy glass top. The side table and glass topwere at reStyle, and the dowels were pur-chased and cut at Min Plastics & Supply for$70.

Design dilemma solved! A one-of-a-kinddining table was created with the additionof a retro-modern detail that brought thenatural-wood base to life. And the dowelscreated just enough a space between thetree stump and glass top to showcase thebeauty of the dark, natural wood.

Repurposing doesn’t always mean fixingsomething. It can mean taking an existingpiece and enhancing it to create a wholenew piece that’s uniquely yours.

I like to call it restyling. That’s the namefor our warehouse shop around the cornerfrom 680 Ala Moana in Kakaako. It had itsown makeover recently and is now opento the public as an affordable, style-con-scious consignment store called reStyle

Hawaii. There, you can also receive assis-tance in restyling and reupholstering yourfurniture and cushions, as well as updatingyour wall finishes.

So look at your furniture with an eco-conscious eye. Maybe that older piecedoesn’t need to be thrown out after all.Maybe it just needs to be restyled!

Cathy Lee is president and designer ofCathy Lee Style and Cathy's Marketplace, afurniture and accessories showroom withdesign services at 1110 University Ave. Sherecently opened reStyle Hawaii, an affordable,style-conscious consignment warehouse withupholstering and repurposing services at 420Keawe St. in Kakaako. Lee's interior designwork has been featured in local and nationalpublications, on HGTV and in her DIY designworkshops that teach homeowners the basicsof style. To find out more, go towww.cathyleestyle.com.

Fall is a great time to tackle some ofthose home improvement projects. Now that summer vacation is over

and children are back in school, you’reready to make your home all comfy andcozy before the holidays arrive.

Consider starting with your bathroomfirst, since this is a room frequently usedboth by your family and guests. If your bath-room is dated in decor, aged in functionand behind the times in energy-efficiency,you’ll be doing your home and your pock-etbook a good service by upgrading somefeatures. Here’s how:

Beautiful visualsThe bathroom vanity is the first feature

in the room people will see. Incorporate acontemporary new look in your bath thatwill earn admiring glances from yourguests with TOTO’s Maris Semi-RecessedVessel Lavatory. With a sleek design anddeep basin, this semi-recessed lavatoryhas a nanotechnology glaze applied thathelps prevent bacteria and soap debrisfrom sticking to its surfaces. Because ofthis, you’ll use fewer harsh chemicals tokeep the sink clean, which saves youmoney and is better for the environment.Pair the lavatory with the Aquia SingleHandle Faucet from TOTO for a seamlessand stylish finish. This high-efficiency faucetis made from solid brass and isWaterSense-approved.

Warmer flooringThere’s nothing worse than bare feet on a

cold floor — especially in the morning. Tileflooring looks beautiful in bathrooms, but canleave feet feeling a bit chilled. Place a soft and

decorative rug in front of the sink, the show-er and the toilet to help alleviate cold toes.Look for rugs that match the color anddecor of the room. Or use the rugs as anaccent color to brighten up the space.

Efficient commodesUpgrading your toilet to a high-efficiency

unit will make a noticeable difference onyour water bill. Consider the UniversalDesign Maris Dual-Flush Toilet from TOTO,which has clean, contemporary lines, arecessed-curve tank and skirted design thatsaves on cleaning time. Its state-of-the-art,gravity-fed flushing system puts an end to acommon complaint many dual flush toiletowners have — “flush ‘n brush,” the needto brush the bowl to remove streakingafter every solid stop.

New linensA quick and simple upgrade for your

bathroom includes replacing towels andthe shower curtain. To introduce a calmand restful spa-like ambiance, find newlinens in colors that blend with the colorson the walls. Or go bold with vibrantaccents and splashes of color to give yourroom a sense of energy.

Elegant tilingPrefab showers are easy and convenient,

but they can look aged and stained afterlong use. To really spruce up the look ofyour shower area in the bathroom, consid-er tiling the surround or installing largeglass pieces painted to match the color ofthe room. You’ll be amazed at how beauti-ful the shower will appear, and you maydecide that you won’t want to hang a cur-

tain to block the view of the beautiful sur-round, and instead opt for a sliding glassdoor.

Once you see how beautiful your reno-vated bathroom appears, you’ll probably

want to get started sprucing up the rest ofyour house. In the meantime, enjoy thebathroom as well as the compliments you’llreceive from your visiting guests.

WOOD AND STONEFLOORING 101Sat, 10/20/12 10AM

Please call to reserve a seat

Half the battle is getting a good wood install is thefloor prep. This refers to getting the subfloor, whetherwood or concrete, to be flat enough to nicely supporteach square foot of installed flooring. Planing, grinding and filling with leveling compound are oftenneeded to achieve this. Learn more at our seminar.Aloha!

M illions of homeowners havealready discovered that woodflooring is not only beautiful

and dust-free, but it is an excellent way toinvest your new construction or remodel-ing dollars. You and your family are able toenjoy its beauty every day of the year, butthe value that it adds will remain andeven escalate for the life of yourhome. Unlike the majority of floor cover-ings, the right wood floor can be some-thing that lasts a lifetime and beyond.

The most traditional form of woodflooring is called an unfinished solid. This isa solid piece of wood that’s been milledinto flooring that will be sanded and coat-ed in your home after it’s been nailed orglued down. It’s generally considered themost “high-end” of wood floors becauseof the ability to customize the end prod-uct but also because of higher installationcosts (man must do what the finishingmachine would in a factory).

Prefinished solids are a whole piece offlooring, but the sanding and coating isdone at the factory using sophisticatedmethods such as UV curing. The onlywork done in your home is to nail orglue it down. Your floor is ready to live onalmost the minute it goes down.

Lastly, there is engineered woodflooring such as Kahala Floors, whichis made especially for Hawaii’sunique climate. Engineered flooringinvolves taking a precisely cut sliceof the flooring wood and pre-installing it onto plywood. Contraryto popular assumption, this is notdone to be stingy on the wood!Rather, it is done to provide a moreversatile, stable form of wood floor-ing. Engineered woods can beinstalled below grade (whereas solidscannot) and they can also be floated(whereas solid woods must be nailed orglued down). Most engineered flooring issanded and prefinished in a factory, andwith the right brand of engineered, youare looking at a lifetime product that canbe refinished several times, just like asolid.

Wood flooring can be nailed, glued or

floated and finished off with a variety ofmoldings including reducers, end caps, t-moldings, base shoe, quarter rounds andbase boards.

This is just a sampling of what you canlearn at Pacific Imports International’sfree monthly seminar, “Wood and StoneFlooring 101.” The next session is onSaturday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m., and will beheld at the Kalihi showroom at 926

Kohou St. Enjoy a continental breakfastwhile you become an expert on whatyour flooring options are, how they areinstalled and what might be right for yourbudget. Best of all, the company offers aprivate sale only for attendees where youare promised lower-than-contractor’s dis-counts on high-quality flooring products.Space is limited, so call 847-7711 to saveyour seat today.

Turn fine art intogreat home decorFrom the moment the first cave

dweller marked the wall of hishome with a bit of charcoal, art

has been a home decor must that hasstood the test of time. Whether it’sthe vibrant colors of a van Gogh, thealmost-mystical perfection of a daVinci or the dreamily diffused light ofa Monet, great art speaks to the soul.

The works of master artists haveinspired home decor for centuries, and technological advances havemade it easier than ever to incorpo-rate their genius into your own home. It’s no longer necessary to travel tothe Museum of Modern Art in NewYork City to savor van Gogh’s “StarryNight.”

You can easily incorporate greatartwork into your home decor.

Reproductions are the most obvi-ous — and accessible — way toenjoy great masterpieces in yourhome. Fortunately, you have a varietyof options when looking for a qualityreproduction. From simple paperprints purchased at your local homedecor store to actual paintings digi-tally reproduced with the aid of acomputer program, you can findreproductions for vir tually everyprice point.

You can use your reproduction toenhance your home decor in a num-

ber of ways. A small print tucked intoa discrete spot on the wall can add apleasant, surprising pop of color in aroom. Or, a larger reproduction canbe a focal point for a room’s decor, and even provide color inspiration forthe rest of the room, from walls toupholstery and accessories.

Another versatile option that canbe bold and striking is a wall mural. When you think of inspiring murals, does Michaelangelo’s famous workfrom the Sistine Chapel come tomind? With easy-to-install wallpapermurals, you can recreate the world’smost-recognizable ceiling in your ownhome.

A mural can fit into the decor in vir-tually every room of your home.Imagine the whimsical delight ofKatsushika Hokusai’s “The GreatWave of Kanagawa” as an accent inyour master bath. Or, van Gogh’s“Cafe Terrace at Night” can impart adistinctive Old World flavor to thedecor in your breakfast nook. You caneven incorporate a masterpiece muralin your outdoor design. The websiteMuralsYourWay.com offers wallpapermurals in SmartStick, a peel-and-stickmaterial that can be used indoors orout, and adheres to most smooth wallsurfaces (including glass) and is easilyremovable and repositionable. Nopaste is needed and you can use themural over and over again.

Great art speaks to the soul, andwhatever genre you prefer — impres-sionist, Renaissance, modern orabstract — you can find a place for itin your home.

THE COOL ROOF STORE575 COOKE ST.,

Hawaiian Sunguard & GacoRoof

ACRYLIC & SILI CONE

The cool roof movement in Hawaii has  spread like abrush fire in August. Everywhere you look, elegantwhite roofs are cooling down their residents all over

Honolulu. Air conditioning bills are often reduced by 25 per-cent or more. Roofs that used to be torn off and replaced arenow being protected from destructive UV and infrared raysfor the lifetime of the structure.

But what happens if your homeowners association won’tallow a white roof? Perhaps you have a million-dollar oceanview that is obscured by the glare from the first-story roofbelow you. Or maybe you just want to fit into a neighbor-hood that has mostly dark-colored roofs. Does that meanyou have to suffer through yet another hot summer?

Now you don’t have to. NXT Cool Zone® has developeda tough, fade-resistant roof paint that keeps your roof cooleven when using dark colors like charcoal gray or brick red.How does the company do this? By using modern nanotech-nology, it developed an infrared heat shield that keeps heatfrom penetrating the roof. The proprietary formula keeps thecompany’s paint from fading in the sun. As a world leader inroof paint for 42 years, it has restored more than 750,000roofs worldwide and offers a 12-year warranty. The companystarted off in Australia, where metal and concrete tiles are themost popular form of roofing. Later, it expanded to SouthernCalifornia, where it has experienced rapid growth because itsproducts comply with tough cool-roof standards of CaliforniaCode of Regulations’ Title 24. Now, the Cool Roof Store hasbrought this product to Hawaii.

Monier Tile roofsThis is the most popular roof being restored worldwide

because it is so expensive to replace when its protective glazehas burnt off. With NXT Cool Zone®, you can choose fromthree different primers that can be used to seal up the weath-ered tile, depending on how bad the surface is. If it is down tobare concrete, the company recommends its Master Primerto start with. Then apply two finish coats and you’re done.

Metal roofs Whether they are corrugated panels or shingles, these

types of roofing are perfect candidates for a renovation. Allpanel laps are covered with a special butyl rubber tape toprevent leaks. Then a metal primer is sprayed or rolled on tostop the rust. Finally, two coats of NXT Cool Zone® areapplied to create a hard, shiny infared heat shield that resistsdirt pickup, mold and mildew.

NXT Cool Zone® is enhanced with surface cleaning nan-otechnology for improved dirt resistance and water beading. Theresult is a next-generation, high-performance roof coating withsuperior durability that is heat-reflective, 100 percent waterproofand has a guaranteed long-lasting beautiful appearance.

Asphalt roofsWhether you have asphalt/composition shingles or any

sort of flat roof, you can waterproof it with an elastomericcoating such as Hawaiian SunGuard Ceramic or Apoc Sta-KOOL. The advantage of these coatings is that you can tintthem to a large variety of custom colors ranging from lightpastels to medium hues. Unlike NXT Cool Zone®, though, you can’t use truly dark colors because there may be toomuch heat buildup in the home — or premature fading. However, if you simply want your sloped roof to blend intothe neighborhood, a beautiful medium tone will work nicely.

Until recently, silicone coatings such as GacoRoof have onlycome in white, tan or gray. However, Gaco has come outwith a number of beautiful colors that will help beautify yourroof and come with its famous 50-year material warranty.

To see all these exciting new technologies in action, cometo the Cool Roof Store at 575 Cooke St. in Kakaako. Talk tothe paint-splattered experts who help customers savemoney by selecting the right coating for their roofs. One sizedoes not fit all. If you need a licensed contractor to install itfor you-with a long warranty, they can help with that too. Callthem at 591-1900 for a free quote.

The down economy has inspiredmany Americans to skip the prosand complete home improvement

projects themselves. We are in the midst ofa do-it-yourself revolution, with morehomeowners pulling out the tool belt andgetting their hands dirty.

If you’d like to hop on the DIY bandwag-on and enjoy the money savings and pridethat come with completing a project your-self, it’s important to keep some tips inmind so your grand ideas don’t becomegrand disasters:

1. Choose your project wiselyDepending on your level of skill and ambi-

tion, you may be able to complete a numberof different projects around your home, adding value, comfort and style to your realestate investment. But choosing a projectand researching it thoroughly prior to start-ing is important. While you may want tocompletely remodel your bathroom, do youhave the skills necessary to do all the plumb-ing? Would it be better to give the room afacelift with some new hardware, linens anda fresh coat of paint? Make sure you under-stand the entire scope of the project beforeyou take it on with full force.

2. Get the right toolsWhile professionals have all the tools

they need on hand, DIY homeowners willlikely need to purchase some equipmentto complete the job. While you’re likely tohave the basics — hammer, screwdriver, nails, etc. — most projects require specific

types of tools to get the job done correct-ly. For example, if you plan to upgrade yourflooring, you can get all the tools you need

while you pick up your supplies fromLumber Liquidators. From installationstarter kits to mechanic gloves and floornailers, you’ll find high-quality, professional-grade tools at a low cost.

3. Make a budget and timelineTwo of the most common roadblocks that

overly ambitious DIYers face are projectstaking longer than expected and costingmore than originally intended. When youstart a project, it’s important to set a realisticbudget and stick to it. Too often homeown-ers begin to upgrade materials and makecostly mistakes that add up quickly. Having atimeline is important also so your weekendproject doesn’t turn into a month-longendeavor. While you need to be flexible(there are frequently unexpected delayswhen doing something on your own), it’simportant to have a timeframe for projectcompletion. When a home project is finished

on time and on budget, everyone is happy.

4. Educate yourself on project stepsNo matter what project you are con-

sidering, there is likely a multitude of freeonline videos available to help you learnmore about the proper measures youneed to take to get it done the right way.Visit YouTube.com or simply perform aGoogle search. When you buy your sup-plies, talk with the associates at the storeand get advice for your particular home.Educated employees, such as the oneswho work at Lumber Liquidators, canhelp answer your questions and con-cerns, and guide you toward methodsthat will save time and headaches. Finally, you can always visit your local library tofind books and magazines that cover yourtopic of interest.

How to complete any DIY project

Page 25: Hawaii Renovation October 14, 2012

T alk to any contemporary architect, remodeler, inte-rior designer or homeowner, and you’ll find one ofthe hot buttons these days is “flow.” Gone are the

days of floor plans burdened by a warren of closed-offrooms, each designed around specific functions.

“Today’s new homes and home remodeling projectsembrace far more open designs, allowing for unprece-dented levels of flexibility. These floor plans permit gather-ings to spill out of the dining room, family room or livingroom into adjoining spaces with no loss of sociability, ortake on a welcome aura of privacy when needed,” saidMichael Myers, marketing director for Johnson Hardware, manufacturers of pocket, sliding and bifold door hard-ware. They also enable interior spaces to serve new pur-poses with each new day. The result is a new kind ofAmerican home, one where rooms assume different per-sonalities as occasions and spatial requirements change.

Sliding doors are the smart designer’s answer in creat-ing openness within spaces that can’t accommodatehinged, swinging interior doors. But in today’s homes, which call for the ability to say of walls, “now you seethem, now you don’t,” sliding doors have been given a lit-erally and figuratively larger role in room decorating. Theycan glide into place to create walls between rooms, oreasily glide back out if wide open spaces absent of wallsare desired.

“Consider, for instance, the value of sliding doors duringthe holiday entertaining season. Large family gatheringsmay require adding a leaf or two to the dining room table, making that dining area a trifle too confining. A wall of slid-ing doors can expand the dining room into the familyroom or living room, permitting the party to accommo-date the arrival of unexpected guests,” said Myers.

The same functionality ensures the kitchen, increasingly

seen as the “heart of the home,” canserve as a cozy and intimate spacefor family dinners and neighborlycoffee clutches, then morph into anexpansive setting that permits easymobility of place settings, food, bev-erages, hosts and guests between thefood preparation areas, butler’spantry and dining room.

Upstairs, the advent of the sec-ond-floor laundry room has provena blessing for time-stressed home-makers who want clothes and bedding to be washed anddried where they’re commonly needed. Here, too, slidingdoors are an ideal solution. They enable the laundryroom to be sequestered behind decorative doors whennot in use, but left open to permit easy movement ofsoiled clothes and sheets to the washer, and clean clothesand linens back to the closets. Multi-purpose areas, whether lower-level rec rooms or upstairs master suites, live up to their billing when sliding doors are used todivide or expand spaces as needs demand.

Making all this possible are advancements in hardwarethat eliminate issues of sticking and derailment. JohnsonHardware’s 200MD Multi-Pass Heavy-Duty DoorHardware makes customization easy. It allows for three-door applications on three tracks, and accommodatesdoors weighing up to 300 lbs each. The Multi-PassHardware features heavy-duty extruded aluminum I-beamtracks, durable four-wheel adjustable hangers, 1-inch diam-eter machine-turned ball bearing wheels and 11-to-13-gauge zinc dichromate plated steel components.

For those looking to beautify theirhome without investing in a full-scaleremodeling project, plantation shut-

ters offer a lot of “wow!” for the money.“When it comes to window coverings,

nothing beats plantation shutters,” saidGavin Shibuya, owner of G&S ShutterDesigns. “Plantation shutters are luxuriousand elegant. Many homeowners love themodern look from both the inside and out-side of their home.”

Plantation shutters are also some of themost versatile window coverings on themarket today. Functional and durable, thereare many different design options. Oneexample is the shutter with a divider rail. This option allows you to separate the topset of louvers from the bottom, making itpossible to keep the bottom louvers closedwhile leaving the top louvers open. Thisprovides a home with both light and airflow while maintaining privacy.

When considering materials, polycoreshutters are the most structurally soundshutters on the market today. They are

especially durable and can withstand all theelements that Hawaii’s tropical climate hasto offer.

G&S Shutter Designs offers some of thebest pricing on the Island for high-qualitypolycore shutters. “As owners of the com-pany, we provide our clients with excellentcustomer service during every step of theprocess, including the installation,” said

Shibuya. “We take pride in our workbecause it is our company and we wouldnot be here if it were not for all our won-derful customers.”

While plantation shutters are one of themost expensive window covering optionsto choose from, G&S Shutter Designsstrives to give clients the best price withoutskimping on the quality. “We will beat any

written estimate for the same-quality prod-uct from any other company on the Island,”said Shibuya. “We just want to offer all ourcustomers the best price and best qualityshutter.”

How do you choose the rightphotovoltaic system and contac-tor for you? What are the differ-

ences between different roof rackingsystem components, roof flashings andinver ters? If every company says thattheir modules are the best, how doesone know what to look for in quality andlong-term energy production? What dothe manufacturers’ warranties really pro-vide as protection for future problems?

These questions, as well as others, arecommon, and Pacific IslandsConstruction believes that with informa-tion, the decision-making process will bea better one.

Pacific Islands Construction is morethan just a solar contractor. As a roofingcontractor and general contractor, it alsoknows how your roof is constructed. Thecompany understands how to properlyseal the roof penetration made in yourroof, protect your home from leaks andkeep your roof warranty in place. PVinstallations require many penetrationsthrough your roof, so caution needs to

be taken in this area. The company guar-antees your roof will not leak from itsinstallation for a period of seven years, the longest period the state allows acontractor to promise.

Every component of the PV systemshould be examined, and this also appliesto the racking system that secures thesolar modules on your roof. It should beheavy-duty and tested to meet highwinds. If it is a single fastener that isspaced too far apart, the rail will bowand probably not stay in place duringhigh winds. It is important to see samplesof the attachment mechanism to ensureyour investment is protected from futureproblems.

Not all solar modules are equal — infact, many are experiencing a problemcalled snail trails. The phenomenon iscalled that because of its appearance, and it has been reported that modulesare under performing. More than 25manufacturers have had this problem sofar. The cause of the problem is not fullyunderstood, but likely factors include

micro cracks in cells, cheaper compo-nents, weak frames and poor construc-tion. Unfortunately, the manufacturershave not honored the warranties onthese products, blaming the damage onshipping and installers, which are notcovered in warranties.

Warranties exclude a lot of things, sotake the time to read them before youtrust them. Many warranties do notcover removal of defective modules orshipping. In the fine print, energy depreci-ation can also be more than the 20 per-cent that most manufacturers allude to.Some manufacturers allow up to 3 per-cent energy lost in the first year. Justremember that the manufacturers arewriting these documents to protectthemselves.

It is important that you, the consumer, know that most solar manufacturers arelosing money and are not profitable. Ifthe production cost to the manufactur-ers is $1 per watt and they are selling itat 80 cents per watt, they are probablynot going to be in business very long.

The description just given is the state ofthe industry today, and it explains whyweekly reports of companies leaving theindustry are common.

The largest solar manufacturer in theworld by volume, Suntech, has just beentold by the New York Stock Exchangethat it is going to be delisted since thestock price has fallen below $1. Sharp hasannounced that it is closing the Americanproduction facility and is rumored to beclosing or selling its solar division athome to satisfy a $16 billion debt.Unfortunately, it is inevitable that overthe next two years, most recently pur-chased systems will have no one tohonor their warranty as the industry isleft with only a few manufacturers.

Pacific Islands Construction is a com-pany that tries to protect its customersfrom the issues faced by using only thebest equipment and installation prac-tices. It is offering specials this month onselective systems and can be contactedby calling 841-7756 or visiting pacificislandsconstruction.net.
