It’s getting to be peakhurricane season, andexperts say we are

overdue. But since it’shuman nature to procrasti-nate, most of us develop“disaster amnesia” — inwhich we develop a “noworries” attitude becausethere’s no report of a com-ing storm in the news.Waiting until the storm isapproaching is not onlydangerous to our financialsituation, but our familywell-being as well.

It is actually relatively in-expensive to take someproactive action, and everyhouse can use some “hurri-cane/tropical storm hard-ening.”

Some Hawaii homes aremore vulnerable than oth-ers, and shown here are afew samples of the type ofhouses and conditionswhich are proven to be themost susceptible over thelast 20 recorded storms inHawaii, the Southeast, andEastern Mainland.

“It is wise for safety, peace of mind, and finan-cially to invest the rela-tively modest amount itcosts to better prepare yourdwelling,” says Gerald Pe-ters of HPS Hurricane Pro-tection Services. “Checkthe fine print of your hurri-cane insurance policy. It isdifferent than your fire pro-tection terms. The averagedeductible is 2 percent ormore of insured value, or

$6,000-$10,000 before theyhave to give you even $1 ofclaim money. They havedoubled it the last fewyears, and blamed it onHurricane Katrina. How-ever, nearly all of them willgive you yearly reductionsof $200 all the way up to$600 per year for hardeningyour house’s wind resist-ance.”

Here are a few things toconsider if you have:

•• Structuress withh roll-upgaragee doors. Tracks areweakly connected to thegarage posts or studs and

need additional originalequipment type brackets, and deployable garage doortie-down kits. The cost is$120 to $600 per door.

Structuress withh carports. These are everywhere andlook and act like giantwings. They are infamousfor blowing off even in win-ter storms. They need to bedoubled up in number ofhurricane clips, and HPSalso offers simple-to-de-ploy-roof corner-tie-downstrap kits, which go directlyfrom the roof tops down toconcrete slabs or blocks

onlyduring the storms. Thesecost $100 to $200 per carport.

nails,”often barely still in positionor rusted out. Over theyears theseroof structures expand/contract/bend/move/dislo-cate, yet homeowners ofold houses rationalize.“Well, it made it throughIwa and Iniki — even

Q: I want to have my staircase done in hardwood. What are my options?

A: Stairs are one of the best places for wood due to the wear and tearcaused by heaving ourselves up each step. You’ve seen those wear patternsin carpet. There are basically two different methods for tackling stairs. One

is to use flooring to cover the riser and a majority of the tread, and to add a bullnose or stairnoseto the edge of each step. It is advisable that all stair parts be glued and nailed for stability. Theother commonly used method is to use whole fabricated pieces, call stair treads, and theircompanions, risers. Similar to a wooden cutting board, each piece is cut to fit and placed ontoyour step. Once again, a secure connection is very important to avoid possible injury.

Going GasBenefits of

Remodeling seminar to tout

There are a number of ways to fi-nance remodeling projects. At thenext Build New Or ReDo seminar

— slated for Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 6 to 8p.m. at the Homeworks Constructionshowroom — you’ll have an opportunityto find out about the latest programsbeing offered by First Hawaiian Bank.

Personal bankers Terri Tanaka andHope Okimoto of First Hawaiian’s Uni-versity Branch will provide informationon how you can utilize constructionmortgage financing or home equity linesof credit to upgrade your home — from akitchen and bath remodel to room addi-tions. Tanaka and Okimoto, as well asother personal bankers at First Hawaiian, have the knowledge and expertise to as-sist customers with financing needs.Homeworks president and CEO JimByxbee, who launched the popular semi-nar series 10 years ago, noted that the ma-jority of attendees are planning either

kitchen and bath remodels or additions toan existing home in order to create spacefor a growing family or a multi-genera-tional household.

“We’ve structured these seminars inorder to give attendees an opportunity tosit down with the presenting profession-als in a casual, one-on-one format ... withno obligation, just exchange of informa-tion,” Byxbee said.

Planning a kitchen remodel or design-ing a kitchen in a new custom home?Brian Yee of The Gas Company will givea special presentation and host a discus-sion on the advantages of using gas inyour home. Cooking with gas is generallyconsidered the preference of most profes-sional chefs and at-home gourmets. Yeewill explain how gas is supplied to ahome, whether by connection to a gasline or by using propane cylinder tanks inareas without gas line access. He will alsodemonstrate the economic benefits of gas

dryers and gas water heaters and explainhow The Gas Company can help you de-sign outdoor living spaces using gas ineverything from grills and cook tops totiki torches.

Then, there are the appliances thatneed to be considered by those planningto use gas — primarily ranges, clothesdryers, and water heaters. John Banquil ofFerguson Kitchen and Bath will be on

hand to offer information on the latestmodels of energy-saving appliances avail-able, with an emphasis on those poweredby gas.

The Build New Or ReDo Seminars arepresented in the Homeworks Construc-tion showroom, located on the groundfloor of the Homeworks Building at 2111 S.Beretania St. For reservations and direc-tions, call 955-2777.

Advanced, colorful exterior trim isconquering several roles, distinctlybenefitting time-squeezed home-

owners and letting them lock away thepaintbrush. Trim has historically providedhomeowners with a basic solution, deliver-ing a cleanly finished look, often with whiteaccents. Now, innovations are increasingboth the aesthetic and functional value oftrim, bringing more appeal, durability andhome protection to areas such as win-dows and doors, and corners and fas-cia.

From welcoming porches todistinctive gables, IQm Trimbrings added flair, in a wide spec-trum of 17 colors that leads the waywith the cellular PVC trim industry’sonly comprehensive color selection. Thecurb appeal also comes without ever hav-ing to paint, giving homeowners morequickly completed projects and mainte-nance-free exteriors.

While most other trim manufacturersare limited to white and a version of beige,

IQm’s animated shades such as Dusty Blue,Sagebrush and Cabernet can add attractivepersonality. Colors like Castle Grey andAntique

Cream bring subtle, classic sophistication. What might make the biggest impression

is that the trim never needs painting.

There’s no need for any elbow grease — nopriming, scraping, taping up or scrubbingdown white vinyl to prep for any paint.

There’s no need toworry over warping

or rotting woodtrim, or having

to scale a lad-der to

p a i n ts e c -

ond-story trim. Such maintenance-free color liberates

busy families and baby boomer homeown-

ers from tedious, costly tasks. IQm does offer realistic wood graining

along with a low-gloss finish. Backed by alimited lifetime warranty, it has a protec-tive acrylic cap to resist scratching and fad-ing. It won’t peel, flake or blister, whereaspainted wood can flake within a year.

When it comes to water management,IQm also has a unique feature. Its AquaFlexfin helps protect a home from moisturedamage, channeling water down and awayso it can’t intrude behind siding panels andcause potential problems like mold and rot.

A deep J-channel helps deliver cleanlooks and fast installation, keeping cutpanel edges and excessive caulking hiddenfrom view. IQm is also color-through, en-suring uniform color even with imperfectmiter cuts.

“We wanted to give both design in-tegrity and real choice to homeownerswho know there’s a world of color possi-bilities to match their style,” says JonathanWierengo, director of marketing for TheTapco Group, maker of IQm. “Whether ahomeowner may want a second color for awarmer facade, or a fifth one for more ex-pressive style, IQm instantly provides no-fuss, enduring curb appeal.”

IQm Trim Boards is a division of TheTapco Group, a U.S. Green Building Coun-cil member. For more information, visitIQmTrim.com or call (888) 289-1169.

Those with aching backsmight want to look at theirhome decor to help ease

the pain. When decorating, mosthomeowners consider their per-sonal style, color schemes andprice range, but many don’t taketime to consider products thatcan actually benefit their health.

“More than 80 percent ofadults will suffer from back painat some point in their lives, and

treating back pain is often verytime-consuming and costly,” saysDr. Dave David, a board-certifiedphysician. “I encourage my pa-tients to explore treatment op-tions they can incorporate intotheir homes.”

Some easy decor solutions thatcan help alleviate back pain in-clude:

Use reclining furniture. Sev-en in 10 doctors are likely to rec-

ommend sitting in a reclined po-sition to help alleviate back pain, according to a survey of primarycare physicians conducted by theL.C. Williams and Associates Re-search Group for La-Z-Boy. And,the American Chiropractic Asso-ciation endorses La-Z-Boy reclin-ing furniture for its back and lum-bar support. Reclining offers totalsupport, taking the strain awayfrom the back in a way that sittingup straight or lying flat cannot.

Get a good bed.The support provid-ed by the bed andmattress at night arekey to alleviatingback pain. Ensureyou have a good, firm mattress forproper support. If anew mattress is outof the question, use amemory foam top-per. And for severeback pain, adjustablebeds can make get-ting in and out ofbed easier and lesspainful.

Choose tablesof traditional height.Stay away from thetrendy bar-height ta-

bles that don’t allow you to an-chor your feet. These can putadded strain on your back whilesitting and require extra effort toget in and out of the seated posi-tion.

Find a deep tub. Soaking in adeep, warm tub is a great way toget a dose of the moist heat that isso often recommended for backpain. Whirlpool jets can also pro-vide soothing relief for aching

back muscles — just keep the set-ting low for gentle massaging ac-tion.

Select carpet or decorativepadded rugs. Hard floors can bebeautiful, but many lack shock ab-sorption beneath the feet. Select-ing carpets or rugs can provideanother measure of comfort forback pain. If hard floors are a ne-cessity, consider a substance likecork, which is firm but flexible.

Organize for little reaching.Store heavy items and those youuse most often at arm-level toavoid the strain that comes fromlifting or bending.

“There are many little thingsthat sufferers of chronic backpain can do for relief at home, from sitting in a recliner to get-ting a firm mattress and taking anightly soak in a deep tub,” saysDr. David.

There’s nothing likewhite to add a cool, clean look to your

home. From linens andpillows to china and cabi-netry, a splash of whitenot only adds light to yourinteriors, but can lightenyour mood as well. Thekitchen is one of the bestspaces to go wild withwhite.

White is the perfectbackdrop for a kitchen nomatter its style, as thecolor creates a sense ofsimplicity, cleanlinessand calm. Summer is theperfect time to free upyour mind and your livingstyle with these simplehome improvements thatincorporate the beauty ofwhite in your kitchen’sdesign.

A breath of fresh airWe are living in a freer

time in terms of designand style, according to areport by Iconoculture, aleading global consumerresearch company. Home-owners are continuing toseek new ways to person-alize their homes, blend-ing different designelements and incorporat-ing home accessories thatare as individual as theyare.

“As the economy soft-ened, status turned fromconsumption to personalidentity,” says Cathy Hitz, brand manager for Dia-mond Cabinets. “Peoplerealized that it wasn’tsuch a bad thing and thissense of embracing indi-vidualism has transpiredinto all aspects of life, in-cluding decor.”

Start with a blank can-vas in your kitchen withwhite cabinets. This pro-vides you with space toadd pops of color and per-

sonality by showcasingyour own favorite treas-ures, such as a bold tapes-try, glass vase or yourchild’s finger painting. For

example, BensonPureStyle Laminate doorsfrom Diamond Cabinetsare a crisp white thatcleans up quickly and

plays nicely with a widerange of other homedecor elements, from cre-ative wallpapers tounique lighting fixtures. The doors feature a non-beaded panel that has atraditional appeal yet re-quires minimal effort, dis-playing the precisionstyling of paint and thedurability of laminate.

Personalize it furtherwith glass cabinet doorinserts which allow youto show off your favoritedishes, glassware and col-lectibles. Decorative glassbrings the added benefitof creating more reflec-tive light in your home, helping you make themost of summer’s sun-shine coming through thewindows by day, or theflickering of candles onthe dinner table by night.

Choose something visu-ally interesting — eitherwith texture or color —for the floors or counter-tops. This will keep thekitchen from looking toostark. And whether you

choose stainless steel, black or white appliances, any option will look goodwith white.

Simple, clean and uncluttered

Maintaining the cleanlook of white in thekitchen is simple — thekey is avoiding clutter. One literally out-of-sightsolution is a Base Recy-cling Unit, which lets youhide four 27-quart remov-able bins for recyclable pa-pers, jars, glass and plasticitems discreetly behind acabinet door. This smartaddition not only helps tode-clutter your kitchen, but it also allows you tolive a little greener and alittle simpler.

As you update yourhome’s design this sum-mer, keep it lookingcleaner with solutionsthat will simplify yourhome and life. After all, that’s what summer’s allabout.

your style. And if yourhouse is on the market, that lilac print wallpaper isprobably not yourprospective buyer’s styleeither. Removing wallpa-

per is easier than you maythink and it has a big im-pact on a home’s appear-ance. In fact, removingaging, sagging wallpaper isone of the least expensiveways to improve a home’sresale value and shortenits time on the market, ac-

cording to a survey of realestate appraisers.

“While many peopledread removing wallpa-per, it’s one of the simplestways to give a room afresh, updated look,” saysRust-Oleum brand direc-tor Andrea Topper. “And,with a little know-how andthe right tools, it’s easierthan most people think.”

Topper offers this ad-vice for “painless” wallpa-per removal in three easysteps:

Step 1 — Score thewallpaper. Most wallpa-per has a waterproof sur-

face, so it’s necessary toscore it so the wallpaperstripper can penetrateand loosen the glue un-derneath. Use a wallpaperscoring tool like ZinsserPaperTiger, a palm-heldtool that perforates thewallpaper without dam-aging the wall. Move Pa-perTiger in a circularmotion to make as manyholes as possible, usinglight pressure. The moreholes you make, the fasterand easier it will be to re-move the wallpaper.

Step 2 — Apply a wall-paper stripping solution.Next, apply a wallpaper

stripper like Zinsser DIFQuick Wallpaper Strip-per, an environmentallyfriendly wallpaper strip-per that removes wallpa-per in just two minutes.DIF Quick loosens theglue underneath the wall-paper to make wallpaperremoval quick and easy.Simply spray the ready-to-use solution on thescored paper starting atthe top and working yourway down, making surethe wallpaper is thor-oughly wet.

Step 3 — Remove wall-paper. Use a tool like thePaper Scraper to remove

the loose wallpaper with-out surface damage orhard work. If any glue re-mains after the paper hasbeen removed, spray thearea with more strippingsolution, wait a few min-utes and remove the gluewith the scraping tool ora sponge and rinse withclean water. Before youknow it, you will have re-moved all the wallpaper, and your room will beready for redecorating.

Few room renova-tions return asmuch on your in-

vestment — in terms ofresale value and en-hanced enjoyment — asrefurbishing a bathroom.Maybe that’s why manyAmericans, who havetightened their beltswhen it comes to otherareas of home improve-ment, still seem to bewilling to spend more forluxury bathroom up-grades.

Bathroom remodelstraditionally return moreon investment at resaletime — often 70 or 80percent, or even more. The trend toward spa-like baths continues toappeal to both potentialbuyers and renovatinghomeowners. Whilehomeowners may still be

willing to spend on luxu-rious bathroom products, they’re also looking forupgrades that give themthe most return for theirinvestment.

Here are a handful ofupgrades that can help el-evate a common bath-room to a luxurious homeresort:

Massaging bathtubsThe bathtub has be-

come a symbol of modernluxury in the bathroom.Whether you prefer aplacid soaking tub experi-ence or an energetic mas-sage from whirlpool-stylebubbles, adding an up-scale bathtub can greatlyenhance the luxury quo-tient in any bathroom.

For strength andbeauty — as well as dura-bility — cast iron has

long been a material ofchoice when designing aluxury bathroom. Now,you can even find cast-iron tubs that providethose lovely, fizzy bub-bles that shout “luxury.”

Kohler recently inte-grated its BubbleMassagetechnology into three ofits most popular cast ironbathtub lines. The tech-nology uses 40 air jetspositioned around thebath to deliver a fullycustomizable air mas-sage; users can opt forheat or no heat, and varythe intensity of the mas-sage by adjusting thespeed control. Flat screen TVsLCD TVs are showing

up in upscale bathroomdesigns. The trend thatstarted in top-end hotelsin cities like New Yorkand Las Vegas, has founda willing, loving audiencein homeowners seekingultimate luxury in thebathroom. With manufac-

turers offering LCD TVsin a wide range of colors, sizes and configurations,it’s possible to find one tomatch virtually anydecor. Plus, mountingmanufacturers have cre-ated wall mounts that ad-dress one of the LCD’smost common issues —viewability from anangle. Adjustable wallmounts, many of themmotorized, make it possi-ble to adjust the TV forviewing from severalpoints in a room —whether it’s the soakingtub or the shower.

Lovely lavatoriesEven one of the most

utilitarian items in thebathroom can enhancethe overall luxury of thesetting. One of the hottesttrends in lavatories is to

go beyond commonlyused materials. Kohler’sNature’s Chemistry andArtist Editions collec-tions incorporate glassand bronze to create amore dazzling marriageof form and function. Ma-terials and designtouches are all intendedto evoke a sense of grace, luxury and harmony withthe natural world.

Laminate Floors:Today’s

A ‘Real’ Wood Alternative

You love the look ofnatural wood floor-ing but are afraid to

install hardwood becauseyou know the floor willtake a beating from thekids, dogs and the heavyday-to-day traffic all toocommon in modern familylife.

But you don’t have tosacrifice high style looksfor boring sensibility whenconsidering a new flooringoption in your home — notif you choose laminate, thatis.

Today’s best laminatescombine the realistic grainand texture of wood withhigh durability and scratchand indentation resistancethat “authentic” woodfloors don’t provide, ac-cording to Jeff Katz, direc-tor — laminate for TarkettResidential, a leading

provider of innovative andsustainable flooring. Andnot only are today’s lami-nates available at a fractionof the cost of real woodfloors, but they’re right insync with the latest de-signs.

“There’s always a newdecorating trend aroundthe corner,” Katz says. “It’simperative for manufactur-ers to respond to marketdemand, keeping up withthe most up-to-date trendsto ensure consumers aregetting the latest in styleand design, as well as tech-nology.”

One such line is Tar-kett’s Trends laminate, adurable new collection fea-turing eight of the hottestflooring designs, includingOld World-inspired an-tique-stained planks andsoft, hand-scraped wood

grains. Colors and styles inthis line will continually ro-tate out with new introduc-tions to give homeownersthe newest, most popularlooks in flooring, ultimatelyproviding them with thehigh style of premiumwood floors without thefuss.

“That’s the beauty oflaminate products,” Katzsays. “They’re the new nor-mal — great-looking prod-ucts that deliver greatperformance at a greatvalue.

When shopping for lam-inate products consumersshould look for flooringthat is engineered withsturdy inner core boardlayers — preferably onesthat deliver high impact re-sistance (at least an IC3 rat-ing). This type of ratinghelps provide excellent in-

dentation resistance, andwhen combined withhighly rated top surfaceprotection (AC3 or better)kids and pets can run andplay freely on laminatefloors without making adent or marring up the sur-face’s good looks. As a re-sult, laminate flooring is sodurable versus real woodproducts that some lami-nates come with up to a fulllifetime warranty.

What’s more, creating alaminate flooring transfor-mation in your home is arelatively simple DIY proj-ect. Many of today’s newlaminate floors come ineasy-to-install planks thatsimply snap together with-out the need for messy glueor nails to pound. Lami-nates can even be usedover several types of exist-ing flooring, often eliminat-

ing the need for costly sub-floor preparation.

“Consumers now havethe choice of selecting lam-inate floor innovations thatprovide excellent perform-ance and value, while alsoreflecting and accommo-dating their changingtastes,” Katz says. “Lami-

nate flooring solutionskeep up with their day-to-day life. That’s somethingwe know will never go outof style.” For more infor-mation about the latesttrends in laminate flooring, visit www.tarkettna.com.

Fancy faucetsFaucets are no longer just a way to get

some water for washing your hands orbrushing your teeth. Today, they’re astyle statement, as well. Whether youopt for traditional or modern, classic orcontemporary, two-handled or hands-free, you can find a faucet design to fit

virtually any decor. And manufacturerscontinue to expand the range of optionsavailable, introducing new designs andextra touches. Kohler’s new Stancefaucets feature refined angles and edgeswith a softened cubic flair to createfunctional faucets that also look beauti-ful in contemporary baths.

While it may be your dream to incor-porate every upscale touch possibleinto your bathroom design, if yourbudget allows for only one or two, youcan still greatly enhance the room’s lux-ury by adding elements that offer themost enjoyment and value for your in-vestment.
