How many designersdoes it take to screw ina light bulb? Only one

— but it will be the mostfabulous light bulb you’veever seen.

As any designer will tellyou, lighting is crucial togood design. This is particu-larly true when lighting a

bathroom. It’s the one roomin a home that’s often over-looked, but improper bath-room lighting can make thebravest among us refuse tolook in the mirror.

My clients, Tertia andJason, know all about that. The couple and their twosons live in a house built in1987, and while most of thehome was updated, theirmaster bathroom remainedoblivious to the passage oftime. With floor-to-ceilingblack wall tiles, a crampedshower and no storage, the’80s bathroom was reallyshowing its age.

And don’t get me startedon the lighting. The room

had one bleak overhead fix-ture that made showering anightmare, while the vanitylighting was so unflatteringit’s a wonder Tertia man-aged to put on lipstick in themorning.

They wanted a bathroomthat was functional — andhad a warm, contemporaryvibe. So, putting the princi-ple of bathroom-lightingdesign into play, I got set tocreate a modern, spalikeretreat for Tertia and Jason.

I started by gutting theentire space — walls camedown, counters came out, tiles were scrapped. Then Ipainted the ceiling white, bathed the walls in soft

beige and installed charcoalporcelain floor tiles with anon-slip surface.

From there, I laid out thefixtures and finishes. I creat-ed a gorgeous vanity by theroom’s window, which wasa good source of naturallight. I put a soft chiffonblind on the window andflanked it with two mirrors.I then installed a counterconstructed out of butter-scotch polished quartz, aperfect foundation for “hisand hers” cast glass sinks. These deep sinks sit on topof, and beside, new darkwood cabinetry that pro-vides a ton of storage.

Adjacent to the vanity, I

created a spectacular fea-ture wall comprised of smallwooden square tiles of dif-ferent depths. Against thiswall, I selected a beautifulfree-standing tub and amodern toilet.

On the wall facing the tubI designed a large showerout of tempered glass, morequartz, a stunning mosaic-tiled backsplash and smallporcelain tiles that matchthe floor.

Modern bathrooms canoften feel cold and sterile, but the wood wall, dark cab-inetry and warm quartz inTertia and Jason’s bathroomwork to offset the cooler fix-tures and finishes.

The best part of this proj-ect was shopping for, andinstalling, some amazinglights. I installed recessedlights in the ceiling andworked in spotlights abovethe feature wall to accentu-ate the wood tiles. I chosewaterproof, in-floor lightingto highlight the sculpted tuband lights for underneaththe sinks. I also selectedincandescent silver sconcesfor the vanity — soft light-ing that is good for whenshe applies makeup.

But the real showstopperis the fixture above the tub— a laser-cut steel globethat allows light to be castall around the room.

This bathroom is a per-fect example of how gooddesign that includes layersof light can transform aspace. By using techniquessuch as spotlighting a fea-ture wall and uplighting atub, I gave Tertia and Jasona bathroom that is ideal fortheir morning routine — ortheir evening reprieve.

As I always say: “If youlight everything, you lightnothing.”

ALLGELECTRIC HAWAIIRENOVATION

Instead of letting the sun drive elec-tric bills up, why not harness its powerto drive them down? All G Electricoffers a variety of photovoltaic systems, better known as solar panels. By power-ing your home via solar panels, yourelectric bill can often drop down tonothing, except for the standard HECOsurcharge. Plus, there are federal andstate tax benefits for making the switchto solar energy.

Since solar panels are mounted on ahome’s roof, it only makes sense to haveprofessional roofers involved in theprocess. That’s why All G Electricjoined forces with Murakami’s Roofingto offer photovoltaic installation andmaintenance. Installing solar panelsoften means poking several holes in theroof membrane, so it is important tohave an experienced roofing contractorinvolved in the process to help avoidpotential problems such as leakage.Murakami’s Roofing will work hand inhand with All G Electric to determinethe most ideal panel layout for yourhome, without compromising the watertightness of the roof. Upon completionof the installation, they also will water-proof all areas with roof perforations.

After installing solar panels, it’s agood idea to consider upgrading yourelectrical system to best utilize all the

new power coming in. All G Electricoffers power upgrades that will increaseyour home’s incoming power from astandard 100 amps to 200 amps. Just aswater flows more quickly and efficient-ly through a large pipe, electricity flowsbetter through thicker, newer wires. Apower upgrade will allow you to maxi-mize the amount of electricity beinggenerated by your new solar panels.

Upgrading and rewiring your home’selectrical system offers safety benefitsas well. If your home was built morethan 40 years ago and has not had anyelectrical upgrades, there’s a goodchance your wiring does not meettoday’s safety standards. With a rewire,a ground wire will redirect the electri-cal current into the ground during ashort circuit or fault, making yourhome safer.

Summer is the perfect time to consid-er installing solar panels and a powerupgrade. As it gets closer to the end ofthe year, homeowners scurry to havesolar panels installed to take advantageof the tax benefit. Rainy fall weatheralso can slow the installation process. However, in the summer the weather isgood and tax season is far away, so youcan beat the rush and start enjoying theimproved efficiency and lower utilitycosts of a solar-powered home.

Summer is here, and for many of us,so are higher electric bills. The sunis shining, so to beat the heat,

island residents are running their fansand air conditioners full blast.

Wooden outdoorfurniture alwayslooks good in the

beginning. Then it usu-ally turns gray andeventually falls apartbecause of unsuitablematerials and poordesign. It has beenIsland Style Furnishings’ goal to searchfor the best outdoor wooden furnitureavailable. Australia is known for itspunishing environment, and one com-pany from Brisbane has designed an

all-weather furniture tosurvive for years.Merbau wood (alsoknown as Kwila) isregarded as one of themost durable and stabletimbers in the world, and is the most impor-tant aspect of the furni-

ture. It is well-known as the wood-of-choice for building docks, decks andflooring. Merbau is the perfect woodfor outdoor furniture. It is twice ashard and strong as teak, which makes it

resistant to abrasion, pitting orroughening. Prior to manufacturing, the Merbau is kiln-dried to stabilize thetimber so it doesn’t warp or crack. Thefurniture contains a reddish-browntannin, which gives it its characteristiccolor. This tannin makes the wood nat-urally rot- and insect-proof. Mortiseand tenon joints with cross dowelingare used throughout each piece. Allhardware is corrosion-resistant 304-grade stainless steel and nickel-platedbrass. Each piece comes coated withthree applications of Sikkens Cetol One

™ which provides a protective, durableand beautiful finish that is easy tomaintain.

Island Style Furnishings is the exclu-sive dealer for Australis Leisure brandfurniture. All pieces are covered by acomprehensive five-year warranty. How do you plan to observethe 20th anniversary ofHurricane Iniki this Sept.

11? Why not use the occasion asan opportunity to upgrade yourhome to better survive the nextmajor storm?

Do you remember the videofootage of large pieces ofdebris being blown around androofs exploding off their hous-es? Driving around Kauai afterIniki revealed that one of themost popular roofs on the

island was a blue tarp!Consider what happens dur-

ing a storm: As the wind’s speedpicks up, it begins to exert a sub-stantial uplift pressure on theroof’s surface. It tries to suckyour roofing off the roof deck. Some roof systems such as con-crete counter thisforce with theirextreme weight, while others likeasphalt composi-tion depend onadhesives to keepthem in place. That’s not alwaysreliable.

A better way tohave a secure roofis to utilizeCountry ManorShake (CMS) roof-ing, which hasbeen installed inHawaii by Aluminum ShakeRoofing Inc. for 23 years. TheCMS system is manufactured byClassic Products of Piqua, Ohio, and was developed by Alcoa in1974. The CMS aluminum roofwas engineered with a uniquefour-way interlock. The top andbottom locks feature an integralfastening flange, so there are noclips to come loose. The two side

locks are formed utilizing ananti-capillary design and becomeinvisible when they are properlyengaged.

The CMS aluminum roof isfastened to the roof deck withstainless-steel fasteners. As thewind gets stronger and the uplift

force becomes greater, the inter-locks on the aluminum panelsbegin working together, and the

roof actually starts to holdtighter and tighter. It will easilywithstand the 120 miles perhour wind speeds listed in themanufacturer’s lifetime war-ranty.

So, what else do you wantfrom your roof? You want a

cool roof that has astriking appearance, gives you pride whenyou come home andwill last for years tocome.

You want a prop-erly installed roofthat will hold up tothe extremes ofHawaii’s environ-ment and can with-stand foot traffic. You also want a roofthat is fire-safe toprotect your homefrom airborne sparks.

Call 847-8885 for a free esti-mate. Fred Rehm, president andfounder of Aluminum ShakeRoofing, will make a personalvisit to your home, measure yourroof, produce a scaled drawingand give a detailed estimate. Hewill explain how the roof systemworks and answer your ques-tions to make your re-roof deci-sion easier.

Keeping your home beautiful andorganized is a never-ending task. Cutdown the time you spend on every-

day tasks with these tips:

• In the kitchen: The latest dishwasher inno-vations, like TrueSteam technology fromLG, use high-pressure steam particles toremove food residue, virtually eliminatingthe need for pre-washing, soaking andscrubbing.

• Living areas: Clear clutter. Make a commit-ment to cut out clutter-creating habits, such as leaving magazines out, droppingcoats on the couch or leaving shoes in themiddle of the floor.

• Lighten your laundry load. With time sav-ings of 20 minutes per load, even on largeloads, washing machines with features likeLG’s TurboWash, can be a time saver thatmakes a big difference in your week.

For many months, senior citizen Char-lotte Carahasen had

seen Pacific ImportsInternational’s featuresin Hawaii Renovationand thought aboutattending one of thecompany’s Wood andStone Flooring 101 semi-nars. She had wanted tochange out her old car-pets and dated ceramictile floors for woodflooring for a long time. But like most of us, herbusy schedule had herputting it off. A retiredwidow for many years,Charlotte works outdaily, volunteers at alocal hospital severaldays a week and evensqueezes in a round ortwo of golf.

However, this pastApril, Charlotte decidedthat she would finally

sign up for and attendone of the seminars.Liking what she heard atthe presentation andwanting to take advan-tage of Pacific Imports’special private sale forattendees, she made anappointment to meetwith owner, Shirley PaiHilton, at her Aieahome. Though her latehusband had liked manyof the touches through-out their townhouse,Charlotte knew that itwas time to freshenthings up and have herhome be as stylish as sheis.

In her seminars,Shirley offers her cus-tomers help with overalldesign and decorating togo along with their newflooring. There is nocharge for this option, and Shirley said she

loves helping her cus-tomers transform theirspaces into the homethey’ve been dreamingof — literally startingfrom the ground up.According to Shirley,Charlotte was like a lotof people, knowing thatthey wanted a transfor-mation but not quitesure how to go aboutthings.

From there, thingsmoved along veryquickly. Charlotte choseto go with the beautifulKahala Floors Engineer-ed Cumaru, a very

durable wood floor withbeautiful teak-like color-ing. This would definite-ly clash with the light-

blue paint that wasthroughout the house. From there, Shirleyoffered to help with

selecting paint colorsand new furniture, and also suggestedaccessories and whereto place furniture.

Hilton said thatwhile the new floorsand paint are done andsome furniture hasbeen ordered, it isalways good to takethings nice and easy.“We want to be surethat new furniture andaccessories are select-ed with much thoughtto their functionalityfor the customer andalso what suits theirbudget. We are veryrespectful of the indi-vidual’s tastes andbudgetary constraints.

“I don’t just have anew customer, I’vegained a wonderfulfriend, and I love that Icould help her to enjoyher home a little bitmore,” said Shirley. Please call Shirley at847-7711 if you would

like to make an appoint-ment or attend the nextseminar on Saturday,July 14.

As you work your waythrough your list of homeprojects, is cleaning at the

bottom of the list? While a head-to-toe, thorough cleaning of theentire house can be a major taskfor you and your family, don’tget overwhelmed just yet.

Like any project, start withthe expectation that it doesn’tneed to be completed in a day,or even a weekend. Instead,

start with a smaller room thatcan accumulate dirt and clutter— like the bathroom — andwork your way to other areas ofthe home. Here are some tipsthat can make cleaning yourbathroom less of a hassle.

Give cleaning a “twist”

Ever notice those unsightlywater spots or fingerprints onyour brushed nickel faucets?

No matter how many timesthey’re wiped clean, peskyspots keep showing up. Oneway to put an end to the cycle isto avoid spots from the start.Refresh your bathroom withnew faucets featuring SpotResist Brushed Nickel finishfrom Moen. The unique finishmaintains the brilliance of yourfaucet or showerhead to helpyou spend more time enjoying

your home ... and less timecleaning it.

Create a breeze

Hot showers lasting morethan 12 minutes are part of mostdaily routines, according toMoen research. The warmmoisture from that relaxingshower, however, can causeserious mildew problems.Scrubbing a bathroom is hardenough — add mildew to themix and it’s a nightmare.

One of the best techniquesfor tackling mildew is to usewhite vinegar. This simplekitchen product is completelynatural and won’t harm yourbathroom surfaces. It’s evenfamily- and pet-safe. Simplypour a few cups of white vine-gar into a spray bottle withequal parts water and applydirectly to the mildew area.Scrub the vinegar around, andyou’ve got a mildew- and mold-free bathroom in no time.

Once you rid your bathroomof mildew, stop the build-upfrom coming back by increasingthe air circulation. Turn the fanon during a shower and keep itrunning up to 30 minutes after.Additionally, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and an open win-

dow can help decrease the mois-ture that can lead to mildew.

Declutter and reorganize

Vanities and sink countertopsoften become a catch-all forclutter. Everything, from towelsto toiletries, curling irons to cot-ton balls, can take over andwreak havoc on your space andyour cleaning time frame.

Chances are you don’t use themultiple bottles of sample andtravel size shampoos, soaps orlotions you’ve accumulated. Afew bottles on hand are helpfulfor trips, but acquiring a drawerfilled with the miniatures isonly taking up valuable space ina bathroom. Luckily, your clut-ter can help others. Instead ofthrowing the bottles away, donate them to a local shelter, where shampoos and soaps —no matter the size — are con-stantly in demand.

Find a home for the truenecessities by adding bathaccessories. Items, such asshelves, towel bars or towelrings can keep items off thefloor and countertop, and add astylish look.

As summer heats up, air conditioningbills can rapidly rise. As homeown-ers feel the heat, many are looking

for ways to save and stay cool. Many U.S. consumers strive to con-

serve energy at home. Forty-seven per-cent of Americans say they try to con-serve energy all or most of the time,

according to researchers at Iconocul-ture.

One way to help lower utility bills inthe summer and year-round is to replacedrafty or leaky old windows with new,energy-efficient products.

According to ENERGY STAR, replac-ing single-pane windows with ENERGY

STAR-qualified windows can save up to$126 to $501 a year on utility billsdepending on your location.

For example, the Pella 350 Seriesvinyl windows provide durable, triple-pane insulating glass window options. These highly energy-efficient windowshelp keep your home cooler in the sum-mer.

Satisfied customer Vince Iturbereplaced a westward-facing kitchen win-dow and immediately noticed a differ-ence in the temperature inside his home.

“The window faces the sun the betterpart of the day, and it was just plain mis-erable during the summer,” he said. “I’mso glad to be done with the heat.”

The product wasn’t the only thingIturbe took delight in. Because of thePella Promise, he found the right prod-uct for his home and budget, had a no-mess, no-guess installation day experi-ence, and his investment is backed bythe total care guarantee — Pella’s exclu-sive warranties on the product andinstallation.

Cool tips

Once energy-efficient windows areproperly installed in your home, trythese inexpensive, easy ways to helpkeep your house cool:

• Provide shade for east and west win-dows.

• When possible, delay heat-generatingactivities like baking or dishwashinguntil the evening on hot days.

• Use ceiling fans to circulate air tohelp make the house more comfort-able without over-using the air condi-tioner.

• Seal air conditioning ducts that runthrough basements, crawl spaces andattics.

• Install white window shades or mini-blinds. Mini-blinds can reduce solar heatgain by 40 to 50 percent, according tothe American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

If you like energy savings, but dreadcleaning blinds, consider Pella DesignerSeries windows and doors with optionalbetween-the-glass blinds or shades.Since they’re between glass, they accu-mulate less dust and dirt than traditionalroom-side window treatments. Plus, they can be closed when you are away tokeep the heat out and opened when youare home to let the light in. With theiroutstanding energy-efficiency and built-in window treatments, it’s a winningcombination.

For more home improvement inspira-tion and to find energy-efficient win-dows and doors in your area, visitPella.com.

For most people,remodeling a kitchenincludes a complete

change of cabinets andcountertops, maybe evenappliances. If your cabinetsare still in good conditionbut you want to improveyour kitchen in some way, replacing your old counter-top with one made of gran-ite is a great choice. It is agood investment and willdefinitely change theatmosphere in your space.

Granite has a high toler-ance to hot and cold tem-peratures. You can safelyplace hot metal pans fromyour oven directly on thegranite top without theneed for a hot pad.Although, you will have tobe wary of placing hot glassor ceramic dishes on it, asthey may crack if the coun-tertop is too cold. This iscalled thermal shock andhappens because of the dif-ference in temperature.

As for cold items, you do

not need toworry about con-densation thatmay make yourgranite counter-top have a darkspot if it is notproperly sealed.Any condensation that mayform on the stone will fadeaway in an hour.

Granite countertops maybe used as a cutting boardtoo. Because the hardnessof granite is greater thansteel, you do not need toworry about kitchen knivesscratching your granitesurface. Although, it is notrecommended to alwayscut on your granite coun-tertop as it will actuallymake your knife dull overtime.

Another way to add toyour kitchen or otherrooms is to create a stand-alone island with cabinetsas the base. It will be a greatplace to sit, eat, work, studyor hang out.

Along withbrand newcabinets andcountertops, there are otherways to im-prove your kit-chen to bemore function-al and lastlonger. Pull-out drawersare a great add-on for exist-ing kitchen cabinets. Withmetal ball-bearing tracksand solid-wood dovetaildrawers, you will neveragain need to worry abouthard-to-reach items in theback.

Most shingle roofs inHawaii fall into one ofthree basic categories:

asphalt composition, wood shin-gle/ shakes or metal shingles.

Let’s start with asphalt compo-sition shingles, which are themost popular sloped roofs inHawaii. Look around your neigh-borhood and most likely that iswhat you will see — for good rea-son. They are moderately priced, can be walked on without caus-ing damage and look nice afterthey are installed.

However, once they have aged

in Hawaii’s sunlight for 15-plusyears, they start to show theirage. The colored granules start towear off and expose the asphaltshingle to the harsh UV raysfrom above. When you check theinside of your gutter and see

mounds of granules, then youknow that your roof is ready fora protective coating. If left anylonger, they will grow brittle andblow off in high winds, leavingyour home vulnerable to interiordamage from a storm.

Coating a roof using 4 to 5 gal-lons of an elastomeric coatingper 100 square feet of area willglue the shingles tight to eachother so that high winds don’teasily lift them off. It also is help-ful to install an aluminum “termi-nation strip” along the perimeter.

If you notice that your shingleroof is turning darker with age, that is usually a sign of mold andmildew growth, which is verycommon in older asphalt shingleroofs. A good mildew-resistantroof coating, formulated forHawaii, can help to prevent thatmold from growing back. As theroof gets darker with mold, italso gets hotter inside the homeand on the roof, accelerating theaging process.

When you decide to coat yourroof with an insulating ceramic-

based coating, you can tint it toa light- or medi-um-pastel color to fitinto the neighborhood. With the latest nanotech-nology, even darker colorscan be applied if you use anInfrared coating such as NXTCool Zone®.

Wood shake/shingles are tra-ditionally coated with linseed oilto keep the wood from dryingout. Even better is coating theshake with either a pigmentedsolid or semi-transparent stain, which will help block the sun’sUV rays from burning the woodsurface. If your shake has turneda dark gray and creaks when youwalk on it, your roof is probablyready for coating.

Metal shingles, or virtually anymetal roof, needs to be recoatedwhen you see that the color hasfaded away to reveal the dull-gray aluminum base below. Agood ceramic or silicone-basedcoating will help keep themildew at bay, which is preva-

lent withthis type of shin-gle. Aluminum shingleshave a devoted following inHawaii, with good reason. Abeautiful, protective coating canmake them last the lifetime of thehome with periodic mainte-nance.

You can get sound advice forany kind of roof from the expertsat The Cool Roof Store at 575Cooke St. in Kakaako. Whetheryou want to do it yourself or havea professional do it for you, theycan guide you to the best choice.

Pacific Islands Construction has agoal to help those considering aphotovoltaic system for their

home become more knowledgeable.Having knowledge is a great equaliz-er between the buyer and seller, butgenerally the buyer is at a great dis-advantage. The following informa-tion is provided so that buyers maybe better informed:

1. A silicon solar cell’s performancedramatically declines when it reach-es a temperature higher than 25degrees Celsius (77 degreesFahrenheit). How modules areinstalled on the roof matters when itcomes to ventilation on the under-side of modules.

2. Dirty modules and corrodedwires or connections will affect ener-gy production.

3. A reduction in cell thickness andpoor quality in construction havebeen recent problems. The lack ofrobustness of solder connections inthese fragile cells and other stressfactors have caused micro fracturesand hot spots. Recent observationsshow what appear to be trails acrossthe cells where the solder has gottenso hot over the fracture that a reac-tion has occurred, blemishing thecells and lowering energy output.

4. Cells within the modules arewired in series, and the modules areno better than the weakest cell.Energy production is greatly reducedwhen low-quality cells are used andquality control is lax.

5. PV manufacturers are not prof-itable because of market conditions.Companies are either leaving theindustry or going bankrupt. Many ofthose still in the industry have cutback on quality to survive. Customersshould be very careful when selectinga manufacturer. Even trusted nameshave lowered in quality.

6. Efficiency ratings of moduleshave been engineered by manufac-turers to cast their product in the bestlight. Every manufacturer would likeyou to believe that its product is thebest, and salespeople will point tothese tests as proof. The industrydoes not oversee what is actuallycoming off the assembly line in com-parison to what was tested.

7. The system will generally beinstalled on your roof, and thatrequires careful consideration. Arethe correct flashing details for yourtype of roofing being used? Has theracking system been tested to meethigh winds or just rated? Are thestructural elements of roof assemblyengaged in securing the system? Arethe conduits and wiring all properlysecured? Customers need to checkthe installations performed by con-tractors they are considering.

8. Warranties are written as salestools and have many limitations toprotect the manufacturer. Most peo-ple trust the warranties without hav-ing read them. Warranties are notguarantees.

9. As a general rule, most systemsare sold without any maintenanceplans, and owners believe that thewarranties will protect them fromany future problems. Pacific IslandsConstruction provides free mainte-nance with every system purchasebecause the company knows that thisis in the best interest of the equip-ment and installation. To protect thelong-term investment, it is criticalthat these systems are serviced andprotected, otherwise repairs not cov-ered by the warranties will be quiteexpensive.

If you are looking to make aninformed decision, call PacificIslands Construction at 841-7756 totalk to one of its trained consultants. They can provide you with answersto many of your questions withoutthe sales gimmicks.

The company believes that aninformed consumer will make a bet-ter decision when purchasing a solarenergy system. If you believe in qual-ity, let Pacific Island Constructionshow you why Kyocera is the bestchoice for solar. Since the companyalso is a licensed roofer/contractor, itcan ensure the best installation onyour roof.

The newest interior design trends areinvoking a playful vibe into roomsby mixing and matching different

styles for an eclectic, fun look.According to ELLE Decor, home deco-rating is shifting toward a more theatri-cal and eclectic decorating style high-lighting richer colors and layers of tex-tures and patterns, as well as a fusion oftime periods, styles and atmosphere.

Homeowners who want to expresstheir own unique style can blend a mixof traditional and contemporary ele-ments, said Erinn Valencich, designerand blogger for HGTV’s DesignHappens. Whether it’s neutral colorswith a bold chair or a formal fireplacewith art deco accessories, homeownerscan create a space that is both comfort-able and dynamic.

“Attractive eclecticism can help makeyour home space a truly accurate reflec-tion of your individuality,” saidValencich. “Combining shapes, styles andcolors makes a very original statement.”

Set a good foundation

Eclectic style can include a variety ofperiods and styles, and it’s connectedthrough the use of color, texture, shapeand finish. With such a bevy of decoroptions, an eclectic room can easily turnchaotic. That’s why Valencich recom-mends starting with a good foundation, the floors.

“I like to design a room from theground up,” she said. “A new floor is agreat place to start for a fresh look andfeel; floors not only ground the room, but they provide the design foundation.

“A good strategy when designing aneclectic room is to start with a neutral-colored floor to help tie all the elementstogether,” said Valencich. “Gray-tonedfloors are the latest design trend, andthey open up the possibilities for a widerange of decorating styles and colorpalettes.”

unattractive, added Valencich. A floor likeQuick-Step’s new Reclaime flooring inHeathered Oak serves as a pleasing canvas tocreate your eclectic room design, while alsoadding an attractive level of style and artistryto a room. This floor gives the same visualsand charm of a hardwood floor constructedfrom reclaimed, vintage wood, which addsdepth and personality to the room.

Another advantage to a neutral-colorfloor is that as your room decor changesthrough the years, your floor will transitionnicely.

“The great thing about spaces decorated inan eclectic style is they can easily be changeddepending on mood, inspiration and budget,”she said. “That’s why it’s important to haveflooring that is versatile enough to adapt toyour changing style.”

Design principles

An eclectic room doesn’t have to be ahodgepodge or random assortment of items.“Have a planned and deliberate design,” saidValencich. “Eclectic rooms benefit from thesame principles of design seen with otherstyles.”

• Balance. “Edit your collection to create har-mony and focal points,” she said. “Practicemoderation with your pieces.”

• Harmony and unity. “Group objects that

work well together,” she added. “For exam-ple, use different chairs around your diningtable, but paint them the same color to unifythe look.”

• Scale and proportion. “A mix of small, mediumand large pieces helps balance out a roomand keeps it from looking cluttered,” shesaid. Valencich says to keep the design prin-ciples in mind while mixing unexpectedpieces to create a gorgeous effect.

• Art. Create a tidy grid of art to balance outweathered pieces and graphic patterns.

• Bring nature inside. Use nature to help createyour eclectic look. Airy flower arrangementsatop a dark, antique table give a balance ofdark and light colors.

• Play with textures in your room. From an oldframe with the paint peeling to nubby rugs tosilky pillows, textures keep the room inter-esting and inviting.

• Personality. Let your personality shinethrough with what you love. Do you have acollection of seashells or other trinkets? Usethose pieces in an everyday nook.

“As you create your own eclectic look, remember to be adventurous and a littledaring,” said Valencich. “The most unex-pected pairings can make the most refresh-ing looks.”

In the past year, CVConstruction LLC has builta strong reputation among

its clients as a trustworthycompany that provides hon-est, reliable service for agreat value.

“We always try to give that extra andmake sure the client is happy, and byhappy, I mean to the extent that we’vedone our job right,” said project manag-er Victor Yeung, the “V” in CVConstruction.

“We would not do anything less forour clients because it’s not worth it to gointo the business if you’re not going todo what you’re supposed to be doing.”

Victor, whose background is in sales, met future business partner Chuan“Sam” He (the “C” in the company’sname) six years ago, shortly after return-ing home to Hawaii after some timespent living in California. Victor beganby working part-time with Sam’s formerconstruction business, eventually join-ing the company full-time in 2009.

Sam, who has an extensive 15-yearbackground in commercial and residen-tial construction on Oahu, Maui and theBig Island, decided in early 2011 that he

wanted a new partner with whom tolaunch a new company that would bet-ter meet the requests and needs of hisclients. He chose Victor as that personand within a few months, CVConstruction was created.

The company hits a major milestonethis week as it celebrates one year ofbusiness, which is an accomplishmentin Hawaii’s competitive constructionindustry. “We’re very blessed to bebusy,” Victor said.

Since opening in March 2011, CVConstruction has worked on more than60 projects here on Oahu, includingdoctors’ offices, dental offices, financialinstitutions and restaurants. However, the majority of business revolvesaround residential projects, fromkitchen and bathroom remodeling tohome additions and other large-scaleresidential renovations.

But CV Construction doesn’t justbuild houses; according to Victor, thecompany develops one-on-one relation-ships with clients that often turn intolasting friendships.

“We don’t just do the project andleave. We get invested with our clientsand (develop) a vested interest in theirfuture, because we don’t just consider ita project — we’re dealing with people’s

homes, we’redealing withtheir livelihood,we’re dealingwith what theylive in. After weleave, they stillhave to dealwith it day after

day after day,” he explained.“We’re family-style, family-oriented,

and we take care of our clients just likewe’d like to be taken care of. Everybodywe have in our company is family.”

That extends to CV Construction’semployees, all of whom are either rela-tives or friends from Sam’s native vil-lage of Fujian, China.

“We take care of them like they’re ourfamily too because they make CVConstruction,” Victor stated. “We’rejust the name. They provide the servic-es. We rely on their expertise to do thejob very well.”

This confidence in its employeesallows CV Construction to keep amajority of its work in-house. The com-pany rarely, if ever, will rely on a sub-contractor, which gives CVConstruction control over the cost andtimeline of the project, ultimately sav-ing clients undue stress and money.

“We try to do the best job we can forthe project price, and we’re always veryfair,” Victor stated. “We always offer(clients) choices, and we never go intoanything blind or try to trick somebody. That’s not how we work. We agree on thecontract, we follow the contract and wedo the job that we were contracted to do.”

Victor adds that he is on call seven days

a week should a client have questions orneed to contact him regarding changes tothe project. “We keep the lines of commu-nication open,” he said. “Open lines ofcommunication mean no surprises.”

However, sometimes mistakes dohappen, but Victor believes it is the wayin which a contractor responds to thesituation that makes all the difference.

“No contractor is perfect; it’s just howthe communication is, how it is handledand how the client is taken care of,” hesaid. “I cannot promise every projectwill be perfect, but I can promise to allof my clients we will do the best we canand will always keep them informedabout everything, whether through textor email or phone.”
