When it comes to serving acommunity, the Uitenhage

Lions Club - which consists of citi-zens offering their precious timeto voluntarily raise funds and as-sist where there is need - are ex-ceptional!

In celebrating its 10th year oftheir successful Winter JerseyCampaign, which involves donat-ing jerseys to identified scholars,the Club also want to assist in therestoration of the Old RailwayStation Museum.

Lion President Juan Hay said,“The purpose of the Winter JerseyCampaign is to aid children whoare captured in the vicious circleof poverty, to attend school, to beeducated and become literate.Thus assisting them with a betterquality of life.”

As most museums are capturedin the circle of diminishing funds,the Lions appeals to the UD com-munity for assistance to renovateand restore the Old Railway Sta-tion in Market Street for futuregenerations, which include bene-ficiaries of the Winter JerseyCampaign.

The Station was formallyopened in 1875, linking Port Eliza-beth to Uitenhage. For many yearsit was one of the main sources of

employment in the area. The cul-de-sac station with its quaint lit-tle station building was known as“The Doll’s House”.

According to Lion Denis Mur-phy who did extensive researchregarding the station, it wasclosed in 1951 with all activitiestransferred to the station on themain line.

The old Railway Station was de-clared a Heritage site in 1975 withthe establishment of the RailwayStation Museum in 1976.

“There are major refurbish-ment requirements includingstructural restoration. To this ef-fect there is an appeal to localbusinesses and the public to sup-port this jewel box of Uitenhage,”said Murphy.

The Museum has two locomo-tives being a class 6br and 10brwith some coaches which formedpart of the steam era from 1876 to1951.

It also includes the Dolls Housewhere the station master lived,his office, the luggage room, res-taurant , the ticket office and thebar including a dining coach.

“Through education of our pastnew challenges will not onlyserve to celebrate Uitenhage asthe 5th oldest town in South Afri-ca and with support would createnew avenues of job creation forour community,” said DistrictGovernor Bokkie Oberholzer.

whilst Greeff, who many moons ago matricu-lated at Daniel Pienaar, enjoyed a braai to-gether with Morné Rosser, an ex-Brandwagpupil. Rosser asked, “Why not a movie in Uit-enhage?”Indeed why not? Greeff reasoned and soon

the cameras will start rolling.Uitenhage make-up artist Geraldine Palm-

erFerreirahasbeen commissionedas the offi-cial make-up artist for Impervious Soulswhilst Denise du Plessis and Desiré Ungererhave already been acknowledged as charac-ters in the movie.Greeff explained the underlying theme of

the film to the UD News: “The short route tobe successful is a route not mapped. Imper-vious Souls is about the action and drama onthis route.”“Two pals, Colin Andrew and Gordon Con-

way take the short route to what they thinkwill bring them pride, but actually it is thehighway to the underworld of conflict, gang-sters and self-destruction.”Greeff, an executive producer, director, ac-

tor andwriter, returned to his home town, forthe shooting of his movie, after spending

nearly a decade inMiami as well as in Italy,Switzerland and various other countries.Itwasduringa familyholiday, visitinghis

Solomon Mahlangu High School inKwaNobuhle is a school with learnersdedicated to bring change.

Last year their project on “Late Coming”made national headlines, as their Y-CAP pro-gramme was announced the 2015 winner ofthe National Championships of the Youth Cit-izens Action Programme in the secondaryschool category.

“What is even more exceptional is that theirproject to tackle late coming at school was ac-cepted as part of the values and civic engage-ment pillars within the Department of BasicEducation at District, Provincial and Nation-al and level” said Olwen Carson, Social Work-er at Solomon Mahlangu High School.

Mncedi Mtengwana, Principal of SolomonMahlangu said, “I feel very proud of ourlearners. They have branded our school as aschool for change, with their initiative onhow to combat late-coming at school, beingrecognised on the highest levels. It is good toknow that this initiative was also given thegreen light by Judge Edwin Cameron from theConstitutional Court, who was one of lastyear’s judges.”

The Eastern Cape is a “national disaster”in terms of poverty - as reported as far backas 2009 by the Human Science Research Coun-cil and the African Resource Cooperation - intheir findings to the Department of Social De-velopment but Solomon’s 2016 team has an in-novative project to tackle this problem of pov-erty at their school.

“Our learners are impacted by high unem-ployment and the cancellation of Child Sup-port Grant at 18 years of age, even though thechild is still a learner. And there is abuse ofgrants by some parents,” said Mtengwana

“I feel positive regarding the Grade 10’s top-ic for this year. It is ‘Poverty in Education’and I believe it will once again make a differ-ence in the lives of learners in our school aswell as other schools. It will help promote not

only a healthybody, but alsoa healthymind.”

LubabaloSpogter, theSolomonMahlanguleader of the2016 Y-CAPteam said, “Wedid extensiveresearch andfound that pov-erty is themost commonfactor that af-fects ourschool. Withour project weaim to provide

I would wish other schools wouldmake use of YCAP’s opportunity to changeunhealthy conditions around them.”

Sinokhanyo Erasmus, one of the seventeam members said, “Being part of thisproject makes me feel responsible to assistother learners at our school. It is not nice tosee them with torn uniforms and know theycome to school with empty stomachs.”

Phelisa Ntshiza said Solomon Mahlanguhas 1 190 learners and 83% of the learnershave child support grants. A total of 30% de-pend on the school’s nutrition plan.

The outreach will be held at the Rose-dale Community Health Centre on Satur-day starting at 07:30.

According to Thulani Zulu, ActingTeam Leader, medical male circumcision

has the benefit of reducing the chances ofcontracting HIV by 60%. It also protectsa female partner against contracting cer-vical cancer and protects against con-tracting penile cancer.

Gerrit Rautenbach, ‘n kranige berg-fietsryer van HTS Daniel Pienaar, isvanjaar die kampioen van dieOPXCOreeks se jeug-afdeling (15/16 jarigefietsryers).Die kompetisie bestaan uit ‘n aantal

wedrenne en deelnemers verwerfpunte vir die plekke wat in die onder-skeie wedrenne behaal word. Aan dieeinde van die reeks wedrenne worddie deelnemer met die meeste punteoor die hele reeks as die wenneraangewys.Rautenbach het ook aan die nasion-

ale XCO kampioenskappe in Pretoriadeelgeneem en ‘n 13de plek behaal.Tydens die nasionale XCO kampioen-skappe in Port Elizabeth het hy ’n 9deplek behaal.Rautenbach is ’n graad 10 leerder

aan HTS Daniel Pienaar en presteerdeurlopend uitsonderlik in berg-fietskompetisies. Hy behaal nie neteerste plekke in sy ouderdomsgroepnie, maar ook in ope-afdelings.-Heilie Combrinck
