Вопрос «смотришь ли ты КВН?» среди соотечественников уже давно стал риторическим. Клуб веселых и находчивых – не просто игра, это частица Родины. Велико-британия долгое время остава-лась, как говорится, «не в клубе», однако никогда не поздно в этот клуб вступить. Особенно если он объединяет веселых и находчивых. Второй полуфинал был всего лишь третьей игрой британской лиги. Дело молодое. Однако на качестве юмора это нисколько не сказалось. Ребята, что называется, «жгли по полной». Как и в первом полуфинале, участие принимали 7 команд из разных университетов Великобри-тании. Уже с Приветствия можно было четко увидеть стиль каждого. Так, «Лоси из ЛСИ» (London School of Economics) позиционировали свое выступление как «неадек-ватный КВН», «Полтора Грамма» (University of Essex) показали вы-сокую организованность на сцене и покорили финальной песней, «ИМПАКТ» (Imperial College London) и «Понаехали» (Royal Holloway, University of London) придержи-вались классических традиций КВН, «Русский Нестандарт» (City University) привлекали внимание

яркими костюмами и красивым де-вушками, а The BarDuck (University of Nottingham) и «ИПОТЕХА» (London School of Business and Finance) сыпали близкими русской душе шутками. Приветствие прошло на одном дыхании, Разминка несколько поубавила динамику, ведь не так просто сострить лучше всех, когда поджимает время. Однако СТЭМ снова вызвал в зале безудержный смех, Конкурс одной песни и вовсе прошел под бурные аплодисменты. Команды старались сделать акцент на своих сильных сторонах – одни хорошо пели, другие радовали профессиональным актерским ма-стерством, третьи оригинальными идеями. В лавине юмора доволь-но сложно выделить конкретные номера. Скорее, все выступление представляло собой целостное действие. Что касается лидеров команд, их сразу видно невооруженным взгля-дом. Это и «свой в доску парень», и обаятельная девушка в чулках,

и человек в одном нижнем белье. Такие ребята имеют свой стиль и не остались незамеченными как публикой, так и членами жюри. Команда судей подобралась тоже непромах. Судили строго, но спра-ведливо. В итоге, как и в первой игре, в финал вышли три команды, которые встретятся на юмористи-ческом ринге 11 марта. Как отме-тил член судейской коллегии Вадим

Грановский, «самое интересное − впереди». И это касается не только финала, который, безусловно, будет большим событием, где встретят-ся лучшие из лучших. Президент британского клуба КВН Ричард Сорокин поделился с публикой планами. В скором времени сбор-ную команду Великобритании ждет участие в Западноевропейской лиге КВН. Так что ребята выйдут на

новый уровень. А там и до Масля-кова рукой подать. Но это все планы на будущее. Сейчас у ребят впереди финал. Их ждут бессонные ночи подготовки, творческие поиски оригинальных сценариев и бесконечные репе-тиции. А нам, зрителям, остается сказать только одно - банальное, но такое неотъемлемое от КВН «Ни пуха ни пера».

Радиостанция BBC Radio 1 подвергла цензуре песню Рианны S&M, чем вызвала недовольство исполни-тельницы.

Радиостанция сочла текст песни излишне провокационным и выпу-стила в эфир версию композиции, из которой были удалены слова «секс», «плетка» и «цепи». Кроме того, на-звание трека было изменено с S&M (сокращение от садомазохизма) на нейтральное Come On. «Какого черта, вы, что, издевае-

тесь?» – написала Рианна в своем микроблоге на сайте Twitter в ответ на такое решение BBC. Позже пред-ставители радиостанции прояснили ситуацию. В дневном эфире будет звучать только «очищенная» версия песни, которую будут представлять как Come On. Оригинальную версию трека будут использовать только в «специали-зированных программах и после соот-ветствующего уведомления».

S&M – песня из нового альбома Рианны Loud. Пластинка поступила в продажу в ноябре прошлого года.

В него войдут в общей сложно-сти 173 трека, в том числе ред-кие и официально не издававши-еся ранее композиции. К дискам будет приложен 32-страничный буклет с фотографиями и различ-ными информационными мате-риалами. Еще одним бонусом станет ин-

тервью с бас-гитаристом Бил-лом Уаймэном, входившим в со-став The Rolling Stones с 1962 по 1992 год. Коллекцию синглов можно будет приобрести не толь-ко на CD, но и в цифровом фор-мате. Альбом A Bigger Bang, послед-

ний на сегодняшний день студий-ный диск The Rolling Stones, вы-шел в 2005 году. В августе 2005

года группа отправилась в тур в поддержку пластинки, продол-жавшийся до августа 2007 года. Предполагается, что в 2011-2012 годах «роллинги» могут органи-

зовать новую серию концер-тов, приуроченную к 50-летию коллектива. Однако группа пока не делала никаких официальных заявлений о новом туре.

Картина Пабло Пикассо «Чтение» (La Lecture) была продана на аукцио-не Sotheby’s в Лондоне за £25,2 млн.

«Чтение» стало самым дорогим лотом на торгах «Испрессионисты и современное искусство». Предвари-тельная оценка стоимости картины составила £12-18 млн. Всего торги, на которых были выставлены также работы Василия Кандинского, Рене Магритта и Эдуара Мане, принесли почти £70 млн. На работу Пикассо претендовали

семь покупателей. Победителем стал коллекционер из США, чье имя не называется. Картина «Чтение» была написана

в 1932 году. На картине изображена любовница художника Мария-Тереза Вальтер, с которой Пикассо познако-мился в Париже в 1927 году.

Аукционный дом Bonhams выставил на торги письмо английского поэта и худож-ника Уильяма Блейка худож-нику Озайасу Хэмфри. В этом письме Блейк описывает одну из своих акварелей под названием «Страшный суд».

Письмо написано ярким, об-разным языком, благодаря чему его можно отнести к наиболее выдающимся письмам Блейка. Предполагается, что это письмо сопровождало акварель, которую Блейку заказала графиня Эгре-монтская. Сама акварель укра-сила одну из стен знаменитого Петуорт-хауса, где она находится по сей день. Письма Уильяма Блейка, на-

писанные его рукой, считаются

чрезвычайно редкими и за по-следние 35 лет выставлялись на аукцион всего дважды. Известно о существовании всего 90 писем, большая часть которых хранится в музеях. Блейк был одним из наиболее

выдающихся поэтов и художни-ков английского романтизма. При жизни он был не слишком изве-стен, однако в настоящее время считается одной из главных фигур в английской и мировой поэзии.

Актер Джеймс Макэвой изъявил желание сыграть Элтона Джона в биогра-фическом фильме, посвя-щенном жизни музыканта.

О том, что исполнитель приступил к работе над собственной кинобио-графией, стало известно в конце января. Сценарий для фильма на-писал Ли Холл. Ранее этот автор уже сотрудничал с Элтоном Джоном при

создании мюзикла «Билли Эллиот». Кроме того, в настоящее время музыкант и сценарист вместе рабо-тают над театральной постановкой спектакля «Скотный двор» по книге Джорджа Оруэлла. Предполагается, что Элтона Джона

в фильме будут играть три разных актера (видимо, каждый будет изображать музыканта в разные периоды жизни). Сам исполнитель заявлял, что хотел бы, чтобы одним из этих актеров стал Роберт Дауни-младший. Кандидатура Макэвоя музыканта также устраивает. Макэвой ранее снимался в таких

Я оказался не прав. Песок пустыни смел Мубарака. Продер-жался недолго. При этом, скорее всего, правду о последних днях египетской клептократии мы вряд ли узнаем скоро. Очевидно, что возмущение

народа было и никуда не делось, однако давление с этой стороны кардинально не нарастало. Ослабли позиции Мубарака среди тех, на кого он рассчитывал. Как внутри страны, так и вовне. До последнего казалось, что армия поддерживает президента, но, судя по всему, на-шлись более интересные предложе-ния генералитету. А без такого мощ-ного фактора стабилизации дальше бороться уже было невозможно. Да и все вчерашние иностранные партнеры поспешили отречься от Мубарака. Все основные игроки передали ему черную метку. Режим пал. Народ на площадях

скандировал: Свободу и Аллах акбар. Какой из лозунгов восторже-ствует?

Был ли Мубарак казнокрадом и коррупционером? Наверняка. Но разве это стало известно вчера? Уверен, что в начале 90-х у аме-риканцев не было иллюзий, но им нужна была поддержка во время войны с Ираком, и на все закры-вались глаза. Да и все последние 20 лет Египет оставался верным союзником США, и все эти годы Мубарак оставался точно таким же. Он не менялся, и его режим тоже. Но это устраивало США и другие страны НАТО. И вдруг они все разом прозрели?

Конечно, Мубарак пересидел на должности. Но вопрос в том, кто придет следом? Хотелось бы ве-рить, что «народ Египта сам решит свою судьбу», только оснований в это верить, как и в то, что выбор будет в пользу демократии, мало. Увы. Исламским фундаменталистам

всех мастей и гражданств благопо-желания мировых лидеров не указ. Позиции «братьев-мусульман» уже и сейчас очень сильны. Так какая

судьба ждет Египет? Еще один Иран? Клептократия омерзитель-на, бесспорно, но и религиозные фанатики у власти – не повод для радости.

Цугцванг. Терпеть клептократов невозможно, а новые оказываются еще страшнее. Невольно вспо-минается печальный российский опыт, когда казалось, что достаточ-но скинуть бремя коммунистиче-ской партии, как сразу наступит демократия и придет капитализм и все будет замечательно. Вышло со-всем иначе. Да и уровень корруп-ции такой, что у членов Политбюро глаза бы из орбит вылезли. Печально, но реальной альтер-

нативой клептократическим идеям сегодня являются довольно реак-ционные воззрения: от национал-шовинистских до ваххабистских. Демократия, которая во многом дискредитирована клептократией, потеряла широкую народную под-держку. Кризис альтернативных популяр-

ных идей очевиден, и это крайне печально.

Правда, без жертв не обо-шлось, как в любой заварушке та-кого рода. Сразу подумалось о нас. Мистика и необычная пла-стика африканских масок при-влекла к себе внимание ев-ропейцев в начале ХХ века. В произведениях традиционного искусства того времени по до-стоинству оценили и сложный декор, и необычную форму. Се-годня в странах Африки особо популярные маски многократ-но тиражируют, и они становят-

ся этническими сувенирами. Их из-готовители сознательно акцентиру-ют и утрируют определенные чер-ты, привлекающие европейцев. Эти поделки напоминают, скорее, твор-ческие копии оригинальных масок, изображаюших лица божеств и ге-роев. Сегодня ингольштадтская мар-ка – пожалуй, единственный бренд в премиум-сегменте, который не подда-ется на провокационные эксперимен-ты и свято чтит традиции. Дань ува-жения компании собственному про-шлому особенно заметна на примере представительского седана. Разработ-чикам нового Audi A8 удалось не упу-стить ту классическую нить, которая связывает третью «восьмерку» с пред-ыдущими поколениями модели. Узна-ваемый силуэт кузова со знакомым наклоном стоек и фамильная решетка радиатора уверенно отсылают к обо-им предкам даже на фоне многочис-ленных нововведений.

А новшеств действительно нема-ло. Одна полностью диодная опти-ка чего стоит! Задние фонари получи-ли единую с другими представителями модельного ряда форму, а головные фары еще и многому «научились». Они корректируют интенсивность дальне-го света с помощью камеры в сало-не, распознающей встречный транс-порт. Они выполняют противотуман-ную функцию – привычное место про-тивотуманок в бампере заняли дат-чики адаптивного круиз-контроля. Но главное, они напрямую связаны с на-вигацией! Фары заранее освещают повороты на проложенном маршру-те и включаются в тех местах, где не-обходимо, без участия водителя. В тес-ной связи с навигационной системой

состоят также «круиз» и АКП, настрой-ки которых автоматически меняются в соответствии с условиями движения.

Музыка и DVD, телефон и даже вы-ход в Интернет через сотовый телефон – все в буквальном смысле под рукой, которую надо только немного набить. А узнать дорогу вообще можно, поше-велив пальцем! Ноутбуки с тачскри-ном видели? То же самое. Чуть выше

Император Александр II про-дал Аляску американцам в 1867 году. Посмотреть на крупнейшую гору Северной АмерикиСделать это можно в национальном парке Денали, расположенном в самом центре Аляски. В переводе с языка местных жителей – атапасков – «де-нали» значит «великий». Самая высокая гора Северной Америки (6193 м) тоже когда-то называлась Денали, однако позже была переименована в Мак-Кинли (в честь 25-го президента США). В Денали, кроме собственно Мак-Кинли, можно посмотреть на гризли и бу-рых медведей, а также на волков, лисиц, бобров и прочую дикую живность.

В Национальном историческом парке сохранился храм Свято-го Николая с редкими иконами, а также дом архиепископа Вениаминова, построенный в 1842 году.

Отправиться к ледникамСамый известный аляскинский фьорд Колледж был открыт в 1899 году во время экспедиции ученых из Гарварда и Амхерста (Массачусетс), так что большин-ство ледников получили назва-ния элитных американских колледжей. Фьорд Колледж насчи-тывает порядка десяти крупных ледников и множество мелких. Лучший способ посмотреть на него – отправиться в небольшой круиз по водам Аляскинского залива.

How is a biopic about the poet Allen Ginsberg, who is portrayed by James Franco. The film is concentrated on the trial that the publisher underwent for allegedly publishing obscene material, and Ginsberg’s most important memories related to the moments leading to writing his most acclaimed book – Howl. The movie focuses on aspects of life that were fundamental in the 30s’ and are still of great importance; sexuality and freedom of speech. That trial is the reason for Ginsberg’s fame. The feature was composed from court records, interviews, and readings from Howl. The poem is illustrated with sporadic animations that bring a pleasant change from the interview and, at times flat court scenes. They seem a bit uneven,

but work in the bigger image as we see the changes that happen in his life with flashbacks are in direct correlation with the changes in the animations. Blending animation, drama, and documentary like interviews works to perfection for the eyes. James Franco delivers yet another powerful role as the author in question and proves, yet again, to the world that he is one of the most talented young actors that have graced the big screen in the last few years. Howl is not a movie for all, it is a biopic that will please Ginsberg’s, Franco’s, and documentaries’ fans, movie lovers should not look over either. It leaves the viewer feeling enriched and empowered. Being a success at numerous film festivals around the world Howl should definitely be a success in general release.

In the Russian calendar the 23 February has always been a day of celebration historical commemorating Russians serving in the Armed Forces.

Over time it has undergone some changes in relation to the name- ranging from the Soviet Army and Navy to the Defender of the Motherland Day. Regardless of the name it has been always synonymous with men - no matter how old or young, whether brother, father or spouse. It was invariably perceived as a counterbalance with the Women’s Day on the 8th of March.

Notoriously, in preparation for Men’s Day, women frantically look for a present which is of high importance. The quality of the gift has to be exceeded or at least match your man’s standart in preparation for the 8th of March. To avoid this unnecessary stress and pointless competition, I suggest you to cook your man a manly dinner.

May I propose avoiding a vegetarian option. Some men consider a vegetarian meal to be nothing more than a mere snack. Instead, opt for an elegant starter, a substantial meat main course and a chocolate desert to fi nish off. I believe this meal will be highly appreciated by the man in your life and when the 8th of March comes, I am sure that the present you receive from your man will be exactly that you were anticipating.

Chilled Cucumber Soup with Smoked SalmonThis is a Dacha’s summer favorite dish – easy, refreshing and zingy but equally, it can be fi t for elegant dining, as a starter.

Ready in 15 minutes + chillingServes 6Ingredients:

400g cucumber200g natural yoghurt1tsp lemon juice2tbsp chopped dillSplash of Tabasco Sauce200g pack Smoked Salmon

Method:

Slice the cucumber and place it into a bowl. Season with salt and pepper and leave it to stand

for about 10 minutes at room temperature. Blend

the cucumber with yoghurt, lemon juice and Tabasco. Adjust seasonings. Pour the mixture into

a bowl, cover it and put it in the fridge for about 2

hours or until you need it. Chop smoked salmon

into smallish pieces. When you are ready to serve,

pour the soup into serving bowls.

«Bloody Mary» RoastThat is my invention and a pure indulgence.I love English roasts but I wanted to jazz them up a little. The Bloody Mary cocktail ingredients inspired the marinade. They work perfectly well with a good piece of meat. You will judge for yourselves but I think the result is pretty impressive. And don’t forget your aperitif - this Roast is crying out for a Bloody Mary cocktail!

Hands on time: 1¼ hours + overnight marinatingServes 6-8Ingredients:

1.2kg of top side roasting beef joint or fi llet of beef½ small carrot cut into 2cm long matchsticks½ celery stick cut into 2cm long matchsticks4-5 big garlic cloves cut into four thin pieces120ml vodka3tbsp tomato puree1tbsp Tabasco sauce½ a can chopped tomatoes Salt and pepper

Method:

Make deep incisions with the point of a sharp knife about 2½cm apart all over the beef joint. Into each hole alternate place the garlic, carrot and celery. Generously season the meat with freshly ground pepper and salt. Put the meat into a prepared greased roasting tray. Pour vodka over and roll the meat in it. Smear with tomato paste. Sprinkle Tabasco sauce all around. Cover the tray with foil and let it rest in the fridge for at least 3 hours or overnight. Pre-heat the oven to 180˚C/Gas mark 4. Before putting the meat into the oven, tip the chopped tomatoes all over the joint. Cook according to the Roast Beef roasting instructions or to your preference (rare, medium rare or well done). Baste the meat with the meat juices once in a while during roasting. Take the meat out of the oven, keep warm and let it rest for 20 minutes. Serve with Georgian Roasted Vegetables or Roasted New Potatoes with garlic.

Chocolate Melting PotsThey are simple and very impressive and what is even better they can be prepared up to 4 hours before and kept in the fridge.

Serves 2Ready in 25minIngredients:

50g butter1tbsp ground almonds100g dark chocolate1medium yolk1 medium egg2tbsp golden caster sugar

4tbsp Bailey or any other liqueur of your choiceIcing sugar to dust

Method:

Heat oven to 230C/Gas mark 8Butter 2 large ramekins or heatproof coffee cups and dust with ground almonds.Melt the chocolate and butter together in a microwave. Whisk the yolk, the egg and sugar together until light. Then gently fold in the chocolate butter mixture, ground almonds and liqueur. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. (At this stage you can put them in the fridge until you need them).Bake for 10 min until puffed up and just set. Serve warm.

Comment: If you serve the soup as a starter for a smart entertaining I would recommend serving it in espresso cups or clear glasses.

Comment: Typical roasting instructions are 20 minutes for rare, 25 minutes for medium rare and 30 minutes for well done, for each 450g of meat at 180C/ Gas mark4. If using Fillet of Beef, the time of cooking should be slightly shorter.

Regina Gallery with its two spaces in London and Moscow puts on a parallel exhibition on Claire Fontaine titled Fighting Gravity that challenges the globalised similarities between the two cities by means of viewing the skies above Russia and UK. In tune with the rising popularity of the Victorian era, Courtauld Gallery is showing for the first time part of its collection of Victorian watercolours and drawings: Life, Legend, Landscape is the first exhibition to be organised as part of The Courtauld’s IMAF Centre for the Study and Conservation of Drawings. From Picasso to Julie Mehretu, the ongoing exhibition at the British Museum, shows a selection from the drawings collection of the museum that have been influencing and inspiring the art world in the last 100 years.

Claire Fontaine’s exhibition Fighting Gravity aims to approach the threatening magma deposited inside our lives by the recent economical crisis. What is commonly called ‘globalization’ is a new form of repetition, where an identical product, is exposed in different locations of the planet and then experienced simultaneously. Fighting Gravity is itself a ‘double exhibition’ taking place at the same time in Moscow and London, questioning the meaning of opening a gallery with the same name and the same owner in two cities. Claire Fontaine uses the meteorological metaphor to approach the economical and social climate we live in. Knowing that the weather is also being brutally affected by our economical development, the sky - where for example the Russian authorities spread silver iodide to stop the rain during State celebrations - appears like a new battlefi eld and a densely colonized area. Silver iodide monochrome paintings incriminate the supposedly neutral surface of abstraction as the inevitable receptacle of the struggle balance of our times, they display nothing but the yellow colour of the silver iodide and might recall Warhol’s piss paintings, but they are absolutely inorganic.

On the façade of the gallery a neon sign is installed stating the name of the technician who fabricated it and the remuneration that he has received. The London gallery will exhibit a sign made in Moscow and the Moscow one will show a neon sign fabricated in London, so that the fi nancial advantage coming from producing goods abroad and exposing them is totally obliterated through this process.

Fighting Gravity Moscow-London, London-Moscow (2010) displays the journey between these two cities fi lmed from the cockpit of a private jet and projected in real time on a double-sided screen. The abstract landscape of the sky underlines the shapeless and borderless temporality of business and the insignifi cance of distances when money and

technology are there to reduce them. It also suggests the permanent danger of being far from the ground, prisoner of a fi ctitious heaven fuelled by oil, pollution and the violence of abusive privilege.

The London exhibition will feature an artwork that will not be presented in Moscow: the silent video Suicide Stack (2010). Stack’s last words scroll on a black screen like movie credits, they describe the state of fi nancial and sentimental desperation that pushed this 53 years old software engineer to fl y a small airplane in the Austin IRS building, injuring a few people, killing one worker and himself. “I remember – writes Stack - reading about the stock market crash before the «great» depression and how there were wealthy bankers and businessmen jumping out of windows when they realized they screwed up and lost everything. Isn’t it ironic how far we’ve come in 60 years in this country that they now know how to fi x that little economic problem; they just steal from the middle class (who doesn’t have any say in it, elections are a joke) to cover their asses and it’s «business-as-usual». Now when the wealthy fuck up, the poor get to die for the mistakes... isn’t that a clever, tidy solution?”

With the title From Picasso to Julie Mehretu, this survey of modern drawings from the British Museum’s extensive collection explores the signifi cant interchange of ideas between artists mainly working in Europe and America during the past hundred years. It showcases some of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, starting with Picasso’s study for his masterpiece Les Desmoiselles d’Avignon, the painting that changed the world in 1907, and concluding with Julie Mehretu, the Ethiopian-born artist and one of the stars of the contemporary international art scene. The exhibition features 70 works all of which have been added to the British Museum’s collection over the past 35 years and most of which have never been on public display at the Museum before.

As well as Pablo Picasso, the exhibition features works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Georgio de Chirico, Henri Matisse, René Magritte, David Smith and Louise Bourgeois and major contemporary artists, including Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter, Francesco Clemente, Judy Chicago and William Kentridge. A particular highlight is Picasso’s double page composition Leaping Bulls dating from 1950, the fi rst entry in the Visitors’ Book for the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Roland Penrose, a founding member of the ICA in 1947 and friend of Picasso, donated the Visitors’ Book to the British Museum in the mid 1970s, by which time it had become an invaluable document of the international art scene in London in the immediate post-war era. A gallery talk by Jennifer Ramkalawon, curator of prints and drawings at the museum, is scheduled for the 17th of this month.

The Courtauld Gallery is hosting a wide-ranging exploration of Victorian drawings and watercolours which will be the fi rst devoted to this area and refl ects the growing

appreciation for Victorian draughtsmanship. The show titled Life, Legend, Landscape includes numerous previously unseen works and ranges from informal preparatory drawings for paintings, sculptures and stained glass to highly fi nished exhibition watercolours. It includes life studies, landscapes, genre scenes and subjects from literature and legend. The exhibition features works by most of the major artists of the age, from the redoubtable Royal Academicians of the early years of Victoria’s reign, such as J.M.W. Turner, William Etty

and Edwin Landseer, to Pre-Raphaelites such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and works of

the 1890s by Whistler and Aubrey Beardsley.

Fuelled by the public demand for

illustrated books and new popular magazines, many of the major Victorian artists, particularly the Pre-Raphaelite painters, tried their

hand at illustration. John Everett Millais’s jewel-like The Parting of Ulysses depicts a scene from Homer’s Odyssey (fi g. 8) and shows the sorceress Circe waving farewell to the Greek hero Ulysses. This is a copy by Millais of his own wood-engraved illustration from 1862 and appears to have been made in order to meet the art market’s demand for fi ne small-scale watercolours. The exhibition concludes with Charles Conder’s Les Incroyables . Painted on silk, this fi ne example of the Aesthetic style of the 1890s shows a ballroom with fi gures dressed in the decadent costume of Paris’s gilded youth in the years after the French

Revolution. Conder had been part of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s circle in Paris and this highly accomplished and previously unexhibited work typifi es an exhibition which is full of surprises and unexpected pleasures.

Edwin Landseer’s coloured sketch of a lion’s head has a very different character and was produced in preparation for the monumental sculpted lions at the base of Nelson’s column in Trafalgar Square. This drawing may have originated on one of Landseer’s regular sketching trips to study the lions in London’s Zoological Gardens. www.courtauld.ac.uk

London: Aerosvit Ukrainian Airlines, the largest network carrier in Ukraine, will launch its direct non-stop fl ight from London Gatwick to Kiev on 1st March 2011 to meet growing commercial demands. Letters to YOU: “How to get

what I want?”

Dear You,I’ve noticed a “trend” if you like in

nearly all of my clients’ and friends’ life stories and issues – they fi nd it comforting to complain (I never quite understood the joy of boring my friends with my life challenges), they always fi nd a few reasons behind failed tasks (better known to us as “excuses”), they know exactly what went wrong (usually it’s something that was not in their power to control) and yet they stop trying. This could apply to you, but WHY?

- are you scared of getting it wrong again?

- are you not confi dent you can do it?

- are you not motivated enough by the end result?

….or is it even simpler than that? You just haven’t fi gured out what it

is that you really want?! Why do you start seeking for professional help when everything in your life is falling apart, when you lost hope, when strength has left you??? The answer could be very primitive… Have you ever seen a person doing grocery shopping when their fridge is full? No? Neither have I!!! However, what I do sometimes is – my fridge is full but there is something missing. Usually it’s something sweet, something fresh, something chocolate or even something orgasmic. What do I do? Do I call my friends/parents/colleagues and complain that my fridge is full but there is something missing and I really want it now?! Of course not! What I do is – I go and get it!

Sure, the “fridge” story is just a metaphor. But it does happen to you and me nearly every day, all the time. You only start acting in two cases: 1.When your “fridge” is empty or 2.When your “fridge” is full but it’s missing that slice of rich chocolate cake.

My tips for you are:- take some time to think and

identify what it is that YOU really want (not your parents, friends, partner – YOU)

- brainstorm all the possible options where you can get it

- make a plan and stop being lazy, it is your future we are talking about

- be brave, be enthusiastic, be strong & be willing to overcome obstacles and challenges

- keep positive attitude at all times

- analyse the results of your actions on a regular basis

- when you get the results you don’t like, do something differently.

- enjoy the journey to your success. Success is only an outcome.

- enjoy the results of your hard work (learn to reward yourself!)

Be healthy, happy and wealthy… and Remember: “There is no failure, only feedback”

RUSSIAN BUSINESS WEEK

Alexander Lebedev, the owner of The Independent and the London Evening Standard, refused to attend a London conference because he feared that, if he were to leave Russia, he would not be able to return.

Lebedev explained to organisers of the Russian business week forum at the London School of Economics that he risked exile if he were to leave Moscow at present.

In his letter, which is posted on his website, Lebedev wrote:

«I am extremely sorry for not being able to attend your forum.

Lamentable reason is, of course, the decline of business climate in Russia as attempts of the corrupt law enforcement offi cers to raid my businesses (National Reserve Bank, airline and potato farming) intensify...

These circumstances do not allow me currently to leave Moscow – they may provide for me not being let in back. I wish you enlightening discussions and productive exchanges of opinion!»

He concluded with «regards to Mr Lavrov – his is a tough job.»

Sergey Lavrov came to London for the first time in a six years’ period, and this visit ended to show that the two countries are ready to develop further relations, and there exists some space for developing these relations.

«Russia and Britain are doomed to be together in the sense of common trends,» – said Sergey Lavrov at the opening session of the Russian business week at the London School of Economics and Politics, and in his opening remarks he stated that Russia and Great Britain have a real possibility to open a new page in the history of their relations.

As Sergey Lavrov stated, there are vast opportunities for developing Russo-British business, and most important for this is economic cooperation, and it has good prospects. Great Britain is among Russia’s fi ve major investment partners, and the recent agreements between the oil giants Rosneft and BK open unique opportunities

for strengthening partnership in various areas, including scientifi c and technological cooperation and creating innovation industrial capacities, said Sergey Lavrov.

He also mentioned ties between Gasprom and Shell. Also, later, after his speech that was called «The foreign policy of modern Russia: the prospects for Russian-British relations», Sergey Lavrov answered questions from students from the London School of Economics and Politics, and among all these questions were the situation in Egypt, the Russian view on the situation in Egypt, and Sergey Lavrov stated that the main thing today is to avoid a simplistic solution.

Also there were questions about the Russo-Japanese relationships, and how the confl ict between Russia and Japan could be solved. Sergey Lavrov said that he met in Moscow with his counterpart from Japan, and they confi rmed their positions on this question, but also they discussed practical things, and that is good. Also, there was a question about the pan-European security treaty that was proposed by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, and Sergey Lavrov said that this initiative is straightforward and clearly simple, and if someone tells you that he doesn’t understand it, don’t believe it, said Lavrov.

Nordgold, the precious

to weak market conditions.

Nordgold is the third Russian company in a week to suspend IPO plans because of poor market conditions. Last week pig iron and coking company Koks said it had postponed its fl otation and ChelPipe, one of Russia’s leading pipeline producers, said on Thursday it

had cancelled its IPO.Nordgold, Russia’s second

largest gold company, has set its price range at 3.0-3.9 pounds

or $4.7-6.2 per share valuing the company at 2.5-3.2 billion pounds or $4.0-5.1 billion.

The company has offered about 25% of its shares to investors to repay

its debts to Severstal and to fi nance development.

Nordgold did not want to lower its price range, although investors were waiting for a discount because of unfavorable market conditions, a source has said.

Premium fashion retailer Jaeger is to enter the Russian market with two Jaeger London stores. In a collaboration with one of Russia’s luxury brand distributors, JamilCo, Jaeger will open two 130 sq metre stores in central Moscow this spring.

The shops will be in the Vremena Goda mall on Kutuzovskii Prospekt and Metropolis on Leningradskii Prospekt. Another two stores will open in Moscow and St Petersburg in the autumn.

Jaeger chief executive Belinda Earl said: «The Russian market is dynamic and vibrant, and we look forward to attracting new customers to Jaeger.»

Khaled Jamil, JamilCo president, said: «Jaeger has global appeal and

we are positive that Russian consumers will appreciate the brand’s heritage of noble fi bres and unique designs.»

Last September Jaeger expanded into Italy with the opening of four shop-in-shops in Coin department stores. In the UK Jaeger has 46 stores.

Severstal’s gold unit Nordgold postpones London IPO

Toyota to boost auto production in RussiaToyota Motor Corp. will join hands with Russian automobile company Sollers to boost auto production in Russia on the back of growing demand in the country.

Toyota will use Sollers’ existing factory in the Russian far eastern port city of Vladivostok to produce cars, possibly sport utility vehicles, Japan’s top business daily, the Nikkei, and Kyodo News agency said, citing unnamed sources.

Toyota spokeswoman Shiori Hashimoto said nothing had been decided.

Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker by car sales, launched its fi rst auto production in Russia in 2007. Its factory in St. Petersburg makes around 20,000 units of the popular Camry model per year. Toyota said its sales in Russia jumped 17 percent year-on-year to 91,000 units in 2010.

The Nikkei said the Russian automaker’s Vladivostok plant will be upgraded so that it can assemble

around 30,000 Toyota vehicles annually. It will be Toyota’s second production base in Russia.

Japanese fi rm Mitsui & Co. will also join the Toyota project in Russia. An offi cial at Mitsui could not be reached for comment.

Toyota has recalled more than 12 million vehicles globally since fall 2009 for a series of safety issues. But Toyota revised up its full-year earnings and sales forecasts on booming sales in China and other high-growth markets.

A special economic

zone called «Titanium

Valley» will be built in

Russia’s Urals Federal

District. The zone will be

established on the basis

of the production facilities

of the VSMPO-Avisma

Corporation, which is the

world’s largest titanium

manufacturer.

It is expected that the valley will house research and development centers of leading foreign companies.

For the fi rst time the plans to establish the «Titanium Valley» economic zone in the Sverdlovsk region were announced last November. Since then, dozens of Russian and foreign companies have shown interest in the project including giants like Boeing, Siemens, Rolls Royce and smaller companies. By now letters of intent have been signed with some of these companies while talks with other ones are underway. A company, which wants to become a resident of the valley should invest at least 3 million euros in its development. It is expected that later it will cover these costs from income of the valley’s projects and also thanks for tax benefi ts. The Russian authorities will free the valley’s residents from transport, land and property taxes, import custom duties, and the VAT on equipment. Also the income tax rate will be lower for them.

infrastructure will help to create conditions for long-term investments into the Valley, the head of PR-department of VSMPO-Avisma, Marina Voronkova says.

«The companies will enjoy favorable business conditions within this special economic zone. This will help us to improve the processing, the quality of our fi nal products, as well as the production itself. We will be able to broaden the application of the titanium we produce.»

The establishment and the launch of the Titanium Valley are estimated at 1.5 billion euro’s. At the fi rst stage the building of the infrastructure will be mainly fi nanced by the state. The fi rst representative offi ces and research centers in the valley should emerge in the end of this year.

At the next stage new projects will be launched all over the Urals Federal District. Many leading foreign investors have been eying this region for quite a long time.

Russia still faces quite a few difficulties in establishing rule of law and building a modern, efficient economy. But we are undergoing dramatic changes and we are moving forward.

On paper, it’s easy to confuse Russia with any other emerging market. The currency is surging, the central bank expects capital inflows and, most of all, inflation looks ready to go off the charts. As usual, however, things here are not quite what they seem.

Take infl ation, for instance. Like most other emerging markets, Russia is battling rising prices - in fact, infl ation has arguably been the country’s chief economic headache for the past two decades. Prices have risen so rapidly this year that just fi ve weeks into 2011, the central bank’s offi cial forecast is starting to look ridiculously optimistic and the regulator itself has said that 7% annual infl ation will be «exceedingly diffi cult» to achieve.

But there’s a catch. Unlike China or Brazil, where rising prices are driven by an overheating economy, Russia’s infl ation problem is lately driven by one thing only - food, or more specifi cally, a drought of biblical proportions that wiped out a third of the country’s grain crop last summer and continues to push prices higher today.

This is not the kind of infl ation that typically responds well to rate hikes, and the central bank has indeed been cautious in tightening monetary policy - the regulator raised the deposit rate a token 25 basis points while leaving the headline refi nancing rate unchanged in December, while January’s meeting saw rates

unchanged but reserve requirements raised.

Perhaps the Bank of Russia, like most of the country’s farmers, assumes a harvest as bad as the last one only comes once every few decades, and is counting on infl ation to straighten itself out once the fi rst green shoots of springtime appear.

Not that the central bank should be expected to sit on its hands. It is, after all, a pre-election year, and skyrocketing prices (vegetable prices rose 75% in 2010, while cereals rose 70%, for example) tops the list of complaints voiced by ordinary Russians. Most economists expect the regulator to fi ght infl ation by allowing the ruble to strengthen, or at least to stay strong amid surging oil prices -again, the antithesis of its emerging market peers, many of which are on the frontlines of the so-called «currency war.»

Whether the combination of relatively high interest rates and a burgeoning currency will attract the speculative infl ows that have irked Russia’s emerging market brethren is hard to call, although the central bank has said they are likely.

Britain and Russia look to cement ties

Britain is proposing to develop a dialogue with Russia about international terrorism – but without the Russian Security Service, the FSB.

Britain has cut links with the FSB since the murder in London in 2006 of Alexander Litvinenko, who died of polonium poisoning. Russia has refused to extradite the main suspect, a former Russian security agent and now member of the Russian parliament, Andrei Lugovoi. The confrontation remains deadlocked.

The security proposal will be discussed during a visit to London on Monday and Tuesday by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The idea is to talk generally about how to prevent terrorism. Both countries are hosting Olympic Games, for example, Britain the summer games next year and Russia the winter games in 2014.

However, Mr Lavrov does not seem that impressed so far. «Our British colleagues have said... they would be interested in continuing counter-terrorist co-operation, and this is impossible without co-operating with the FSB because it is the leading agency in Russia on counter-

terrorism.», – sad LavrovHowever, he noted that «both

sides are losing» and that the recent Moscow airport bombing was «another reminder that we have to do more».

The British Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to visit Moscow

this year and the ground is now being prepared for that.

One result could be the re-establishment of a British serious and organised crimes liaison unit in Moscow, which was withdrawn post-Litvinenko. This concentrated more on crime and drugs than international terrorism. Britain is also inviting Alexander Khloponin, Moscow’s special envoy for the North Caucasus, to come to London to discuss anti-terrorism policies.

It is part of a plan by British diplomats to develop a more polite and practical dialogue with an important world player, while trying to ignore the elephant in the room. The fact is that Russia is too big a power for the UK to boycott, not least because of the huge British investment in Russia, highlighted by the recent BP oil agreement there.

Russia appears more than willing to encourage this approach. Mr Lavrov reached back into history for examples of co-operation overcoming difference: «That was the case in 1812-1815 during the Napoleonic wars, that

was the case during World War I, during World War II and we now have international terrorism as something which challenges all of us.»

On another diffi cult issue, visas, little progress is expected. Britain continues its restrictive policy while Russia wants a much more open system with Europe as a whole.

There is a hint on the British side that they want to use any security talks to encourage Russia to go down

the path of greater social and legal liberalism.

However, nobody in Britain or any other Western country has any

expectations that this will happen. Russian authorities took a decision after the Ukrainian Orange Revolution six years ago to tighten their control over society, and the recent uprising in Egypt will no doubt be a reminder to them that this is not the time to loosen their grip.

Cancelling Lavrov’s London visit, as the former foreign office minister Chris Bryant asked the government to do in response to Harding’s situation, would have had minimal effect.

The investigation is still open and many in British offi cialdom are convinced that the murder came about with the active help of Russia’s FSB. Others think it is time to move on: if BP, Britain’s largest company, can snuggle up to Rosneft, Russia’s best-connected one, why can’t politicians be cordial and

constructive too. The visit may be aimed at

smoothing a trip to Moscow by David Cameron later this year. If that improved the deplorable rudeness and delays faced by ordinary Russians trying to get visas to come to the UK, that would be good news. But it is easy to see a trap too.

New prime ministers often think that their charm and personality can repair relations with Russia. Tony Blair and George Bush both tried charming Vladimir Putin, but came to regret it.

The big point is that if BP wants to do a deal with with Rosneft, knowing that it consists of assets around which swirl a great deal of what might be politely call murk, controversy and questionability, it can do so at its own peril. But British foreign policy towards Russia must not be guided or held hostage by such deals.

BP may well have proven Mr Putin right about the cynicism (and amnesia) of foreign businessess.

But he should be at least proven wrong about the alignment of the British state policy and BP’s corporate interests. Britain should take the lead in introducing visa bans for those who perpetrated the torture-killing of the Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and for those who benefi ted from the fraud that he uncovered. It should also impose similar restrictions for those who were involved in the second, farcical, trial of the jailed oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Drawing clear distinction between private business interests and public interests is important, and particularly so after the BP-Rosneft deal.
