жизни вышла судить матч премьер-лиги. Девушка сильно волновалась, но не допустила ни одной ошибки. Тем не менее дамское судейство не произвело на комментаторов должного впечатления.

Зрители юмора не оценили. Зато начальство внимательно прослу-шало запись и отстранило обоих журналистов от эфира. Более того, Грэя и Кейса заставили извиниться перед судьей. Виновница скандала чисто по-женски разрыдалась, ког-да услышала, что о ней говорили, но обидчиков своих простила. Несмотря на извинения и рас-

Главное, чтобы они знали правила, верно ведь?Не знаю, почему комментато-ры Sky Sports так ополчились против девушки. По-моему, если ты хорошо делаешь свою работу, пол не должен быть преградой. Как я уже говорил, я до второго тайма не знал, что на линии работает девушка. Меня это никак не волновало. Самое важное – как человек понимает правила игры.

В Лондоне состоялся ряд меропри-ятий в память о жертвах нацистского режима. В этот день прошла траурная служба у дерева памяти Холокоста и возложение венков к памятнику советским гражданам, погибшим в годы Второй мировой войны.В начале церемонии, которая

состоялась в Имперском музее, присутствующим был показан фильм «Нерассказанные истории», повеству-ющий о жертвах геноцида. Ученики местных школ поделились своими мыслями о том, что люди всех рас и вероисповеданий должны жить в мире.После этого церемония перемести-

лась в парк Имперского военного му-зея, где с торжественной речью вы-ступил мэр лондонского района Са-

зек Тио Шито, председатель британ-ской организации «Советский мемо-риальный фонд» и глава политическо-го отдела посольства Российской Фе-дерации Александр Стерник.На английском и иврите были

прочитаны молитвы в память о не-винно погибших от рук нацистских преступников. Затем представители посольств стран СНГ, британских и российских общественных органи-заций, ветераны возложили венки к подножию мемориала войны.Памятные церемонии проходят в

парке Имперского военного музея трижды в год – 27 января, в День па-мяти жертв Холокоста; 9 мая, в День победы; и в воскресенье, ближай-шее к 11 ноября, когда отмечается День памяти в Великобритании. Кро-ме того, в Военном музее действует постоянная выставка памяти жертв Холокоста, которая дает возможность понять, как зарождалась антисемит-ская политика, где истоки геноцида. Еще со времен Первой мировой во-йны можно проследить начало ужа-сов террора, последующих в дальней-шем. Основатели экспозиции тща-тельно собирали материалы – мно-жество фотографий, подлинных доку-ментов, газетные статьи и кинохрони-ки, все это - доказательство жестко-го издевательства над людьми. Теперь новости службы можно будет услышать только в Интернете на сайте русскоязычного подразде-ления корпорации.Бюджет всемирной службы,

частью которой является русская служба, будет урезан на 16%. Кор-порация существует на грант МИД Великобритании, размер которого в 2011 году ощутимо уменьшился вслед за общим секвестром бюд-жета Соединенного Королевства. В результате будут уволены 650 сотрудников – это около четверти всего штата Би-би-си.Почти половина увольняемых –

сотрудники разных языковых служб Би-би-си. Сербская, албанская и македонская службы будут ликви-дированы полностью, так же как и редакция вещания на английском языке на страны Карибского ре-гиона и португалоязычная служба вещания на Африку. Одновременно будут ликвидированы их сайты. «Нам необходимо сосредоточить усилия на тех языковых службах, в которых есть наибольшая потреб-ность и которые оказывают наи-большее воздействие», – заявил глава всемирной службы Би-би-си Питер Хоррокс.Помимо русской службы в Интер-

нет уйдет вещание на украинском, азербайджанском, турецком, вьет-намском и китайском (мандарин) языках.

ность в начале 90-х как участник квинтета Take That. В состав коллектива он вошел в 16-летнем возрасте. В 1996 году группа рас-палась, и Робби занялся сольной карьерой – причем она сложилась заметно более удачно, чем у его коллег по Take That. В 2005 году Take That воссоеди-

нились, но без участия Уильямса. Официальная информация о том, что Робби возвращается в группу, появилась только летом 2010 года. В ноябре 2010 года Take That вы-пустили пластинку Progress, став-шую первым за 15 лет альбомом, над которым работали все пятеро участников коллектива.

В фильме Кроненберга Пэкера сыграет Роберт Паттинсон – актер, получивший широкую известность благодаря

участию в фильмах серии «Сумерки». Роль должна была достаться Колину Фарреллу, но позже от его кандида-туры отказались.

Виза действительна еще год, я хотела бы подать на другую программу Master в сентябре 2011 г., но при этом мне не хотелось бы выезжать из Великобритании. Что можно сделать в моей ситуации?

Судя по вашему вопросу, IELTS вы сдавали более 2-х лет назад, и сертификат о сдаче эк-замена стал недействителен. Мы рекомендуем вам как можно быстрее записаться на интен-сивные курсы IELTS высокого уровня длительно-стью 6-7 месяцев и подать на новую визу Tier 4 (General), не выезжая из Великобритании. По-сле окончания курсов и успешной сдачи IELTS можно будет поступить на новую программу Master и оформить новую визу Tier 4.

Два дня подряд приходят новости о грядущих продолжениях извест-ных и хорошо знакомых всем нам книг. В понедельник было объяв-лено о скором выходе новой книги о Джеймсе Бонде «Карт-бланш», которую выпускает американский писатель Джеффри Дивер. А во вторник пришли известия о том, что Фонд наследия Артура Конан Дойла выбрал английского детского писа-теля и сценариста Энтони Горовица автором продолжения истории о

Шерлоке Холмсе, которая выйдет в свет этой осенью.На моей памяти это уже далеко

не первый проект подобных «реин-карнаций» полюбившихся сюжетов и героев. В основном они, конечно, выпускаются ради получения дополнительной прибыли на-следниками и душеприказчиками правообладателей. Все продолже-ния санкционированы и одобрены ими, но противоречий от этого не становится меньше. Читатели-пуристы обычно недовольно ворчат по поводу неприкосновенности священных «классических» сюже-тов и не признают «новоделов» вне зависимости от литературной ценности последних и именитости их авторов.Тем не менее выход продолже-

ний известных книг почти всег-да обставлен с большой коммер-ческой и пиаровской помпой. Так было в 2008 году, когда Себастьян Фолкс выпускал книгу об Агенте 007 «Дьявол не любит ждать», и в 2009-м, когда на свет появилось официальное продолжение истории о Винни-Пухе – книга «Возвраще-ние в Чудесный лес» британского

писателя и драматурга Дэвида Бе-недиктуса с рисунками Марка Бер-джесса.

Но самая интересная исто-рия была с продолжением леген-дарной детской сказки о Питере Пэне, которое было опубликовано в 2006 году. Там дело было в том, что английский писатель Джеймс Барри завещал после своей смерти пере-дать права на книгу и доходы от ее издания лондонской детской боль-нице на Грейт-Ормонд-стрит. В на-чале 2000-х годов, когда положен-ный по законам об авторских пра-вах 70-летний срок истекал, руко-водство больницы объявило кон-курс на создание продолжения ро-мана, средства от издания которо-го были поделены поровну между автором и лечебным учреждением. Почетное право написать продол-жение повести было доверено име-нитой детской писательнице Дже-ральдине Маккафрин.В общем, не всегда авторами

продолжений движет только жажда личной наживы, что приятно. Но вот насколько мне помнится, в России подобная практика авторизован-ных продолжений известных книг не распространена.

Так как я сейчас владею английским на достаточно хорошем уровне, чтобы читать, то предпочитаю книги на языке автора. Хотя «Код Да Вин-чи» читала на русском. Перевод был достаточно примитивным, но это из-бавило меня от заглядываний в словарь, чтобы узнать значение некото-рых терминов, о которых я слышала в первый раз на английском.

По опыту, если к хорошему филь-му очень сложно снять достойную вторую часть (удачи можно вспом-нить чуть ли не все за пару минут), то хорошую книгу, написанную как законченное произведение, продолжить достойно почти невоз-можно.Хотя кассу она сделает, конечно.

Пи-томцы не должны спать на голом полу: велика вероятность просту-диться, к тому же это негигиенич-но. Лучше приобрести готовый ле-жак – их выпускает большинство компаний, производящих товары для животных.

Лежаки – изделия универсаль-ные, поэтому их используют как для собак, так и для кошек. В про-даже есть лежаки с бортиками, на которые собаки любят класть голо-ву во время сна. Большинство та-ких спальных мест – разборные: они состоят из каркаса, обитого

плотной тканью, и мягкой подуш-ки на синтепоне. Их можно подо-брать по размеру и цветовой со-четаемости с другими предмета-ми интерьера, поскольку пред-ставлено большое количество раз-ных расцветок. Исполин с идеальными пропорциями

Дизайнерам Citroёn надо от-дать должное: прошло уже три года с момента появления C5, но смотрится он все так же свежо. Автомобиль совсем не выглядит громоздким, хотя это полноценный D-класс. Как ди-зайнерам удалось скрыть ис-тинный размер С5 просто не-понятно. Когда Сitroёn ока-зывается бок о бок с сораз-мерными Audi, BMW или Mercedes, сразу и не скажешь, какой из них престижнее и до-роже.

Французский дизайн, не-мецкое качество

Сочетание французского ди-зайна и немецкого качества исполнения сделало свое дело. Когда я первый раз села за руль С5, то сразу отметила ка-чество материалов интерьера. При этом каждая деталь впи-сывается в общую гармонию. Если брать за эталон оформ-ления салона немецких одно-классников, то француз в ком-плектации Exclusive если и про-игрывает им, то, скорее, в от-

Но неподвижная ступица с изобилием функционала меня, признаться, по началу смутила. Единственное, что выбивается из общей стилистики, – это ау-диосистема. Тестовый автомо-биль был оснащен таким же го-ловным устройством, как, на-пример, Peugeot 207, – единой магнитолой концерна PSA. Для дорогого седана бизнес-класса это явное упущение.

Пожиратель дорог, но не бензина

Размер салона под стать га-баритам С5. Я, например, не смогла дотянуться до пасса-жирской двери, сидя в крес-ле водителя. Задний ряд сиде-ний позволяет свободно распо-ложиться трем рослым мужчи-нам. Вообще С5, по моим ощу-щениям, автомобиль мужской.

Кстати, это первый Citroёn с отменной шумоизоля-цией. Рокот трехлитро-вого дизеля едва улав-ливается слухом.

Да-да, под капотом у этого седана прячется V-образная шестерка, оснащенная систе-мой впрыска common rail тре-тьего поколения, что делает мотор еще более надежным в эксплуатации. С5 с этим дви-гателем – настоящий пожира-

тель дорог, но не денег. Судите сами: 240 л.с. и 450 Н*м кру-тящего момента разгоняют се-дан до сотни за 7,9 сек. А рас-ход топлива просто смешной: бортовой компьютер показы-

вал чуть меньше 10 л на 100 км пути.

На С5 мне пришлось отпра-виться в сравнительно даль-нее путешествие. И, знаете, я в восхищении! Работа фирмен-ной «ситроеновской» подве-ски Hydractive 3 Plus позволя-ет не замечать неровности, ко-лейность, выбоины и прочие сюрпризы. Автомобиль едет по любой дороге так, словно это морской паром! Однако хо-

рошая шумоизоляция, кото-рая поглощает аэродинамиче-ские шумы автомобиля, дает прокрасться в салон дизель-ной песне. Может быть, звука моторов меньшего объема не слышно, но три литра слышно отчетливо. Что в длительной по-ездке дает небольшой диском-форт.

Кстати, расход топлива по трассе вообще смешной – 6 л на «сотню».

Выпуском этого деликатного това-ра занимаются всего несколько старейших фирм-изготовителей. К наиболее авторитетным из них относятся итальянские бренды Montegrappa, Visconti и Omas. Швейцария также славится сво-им производителем эксклю-зивных ручек – фирмой Caran d’Ache. Немцы гордятся компани-ей с богатой историей Montblanc, а французы – ювелирно-часовым домом Cartier. Итак, какие же руч-ки на сегодняшний день являют-ся самыми дорогостоящими?

Королевская ручка Montblanc

На первом месте нашего рей-тинга расположилось произве-

дение ювелирного искусства от немецкой компании Montblanc – Boheme Royal Pen. Перо ручки изготовлено вручную из золота 18 карат. Помимо этого, оно ин-крустировано платиной и украше-но гравюрой. Корпус и колпачок ручки покрыты белым золотом и 1 тыс. белых бриллиантов. А если быть точными, то всего на ней на-считывается до 1430 драгоценных камней. Также на корпусе ручки, которая стоит $1,5 млн., размеще-ны три кольца из белого золота.

Совместный шедевр фран-цузских и немецких мастеров

Вторую позицию в рейтинге за-нимает плод совместного твор-чества известного французско-го ювелирного дома Van Cleef & Arpels и немецкой компании Montblanc. Коллекция Mystery Masterpiece была выпущена в 2006 году по случаю праздно-вания 100-летних юбилеев обо-их производителей. Many fi lms have tried to portray such pain in families and people before, yet the «Rabbit Hole» hits the spot. The fi lm depicts the relationship in a young family who lost their four year old son. The boy ran after his dog and got hit by a car. The audience is dropped into their lives eight months after the accident, and fi nds out what happened indirectly by putting different conversations together. Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhhart portray the pain of parents who have lost the most important bit of their life in a fi ne way. They struggle as individuals and as a couple. Each, even thought they have embarked on a journey together, learn how to deal with it in their own personal way. She spends time with

the schoolboy who killed the son, who they do not blame as it was an accident, and he fi nds refuge in a woman from their support group. The fi lm is presented in a slow pace, one day at a time. This brings the viewer even closer to the situation and its protagonists. The different situations that they are both presented with a real life problems and they learn how to deal with it. The couple emerges from their respective relationships with an understanding that going through such a tragedy is better together, getting rid of memories will not erase the past, and that their love is still there and is strong. This fi lm should be on everyone’s list to see and don’t forget a box of tissues. Always remember that things, even if they never go away, will become easier to live with.

As Moscow is preparing for April’s Fourth Biennale of Contemporary Art only two months prior the prestigious Venice Biennale, London Info focuses on the local art scene and interviews Nina Turina, Director of Art Deco Gallery and visits Winzavod, the Centre of Contemporary Art, an ex-winery that nowadays concentrates the best contemporary art resources the city has to offer.

Art Deco, one of the most infl uential galleries of Moscow is partnering with the Russian Art Institute for the fi rst time on a contemporary art project. The gallery itself was created on the basis of a Russian and European collection of works from the fi rst half of the twentieth, however this time, Nina Turina, the Director of the gallery, chose to show works by Fridon Aslanyan who apart from artist is also a designer and architect. The exhibition project is organized by the Russian Art Institute and presents the artist’s multiple explorations: a transcendental non-fi gurative painting, fi ne architectural landscapes, unique portraits created in a special author’s technique of bitumen and stamps, as well as the national faces of the miniature fi gures and a collection of works of sea shells which is refl ecting the designer’s search of the artist.

Why the name Art Deco? Can you tell us a bit about the art deco movement in Russia and how it translates in the contemporary art scene?

Art Deco Style is one of most important directions for us, because the greatest part of our

collection has works the interwar period of the twentieth century. Nowadays in Russia we witness a resurging of this period - there are a lot of apartments and houses decorated in this style. Also the

infl uence of art deco is very strong in design and fashion.

How would you describe the Moscow art scene?

The situation of the art scene in Moscow is very different and changing at the same time.

You can fi nd a multitude of galleries with projects from antique art to contemporary. The liberty of creation promotes the creativity and the imagination of contemporary artists.

What about the art market? What is the current taste of Muscovite collectors? What is the profi le of the up-and-coming Russian collector?

One of the most signifi cant trends is the culture patronage projects of art collectors. It is excellent that some of them are able to publicly share the great masterpieces and realize many culture programs. Last autumn we showcased an exhibition ‘The images of Art Deco’ and the biggest part of works belonged to an outstanding collector, Mkrtich Okroyan. He is one of the well known patrons of modern art in Russia and his activity as a founder of educational and cultural organization named Russian Art Institute is very signifi cant. Russian Art Institute is currently running a wide range activities, however the most important mission of the organization is the advancement of arts education and culture.

Various international galleries and art businesses have been aggressively growing their operations in Russia - how is this viewed by the local art dealers?

We collaborate with various, certifi ed galleries and art dealers. The quality of works is the main criterion for us.

Tell us about the current exhibition and what you are interested in exploring through it.

The exhibition of paintings by Fridon Aslanyan is the fi rst attempt of Art Deco Gallery to show contemporary art. The work of the artist is unique and it’s hard to defi ne it and to refer to some directions in art. His experience is a visual representation of prayers, mantras and meditation, which allows the viewers to feel emotions and passions of other space dimensions.

What do you consider as the most infl uential art hubs of Moscow today?

There are plenty of different spaces in Moscow doing interesting projects. For example Garage, Winzavod and Art Strelka. Now we are working for the creation of the future Center of Fine Arts of Mkrtich Okroyan and a Museum of Modern Art which will form a new Art Area in the center of Moscow. And we truly hope that this place would become a great space for anyone who is interested in culture and art.

Winzavod, a leading art centre of Moscow, is inaugurating a project that aims to guide and support the young Russian artists at the beginning of their career. Under the name START, Winzavod hosts for the month of February an audio-installation by Eugeniy Chertoplyasov titled ‘Pharmoconcert’. Audio-installation is an absolutely new and experimental sort of art whereby sounds can infl uence people’s sub consciousness unnoticeably but very perceptibly. A defi nite audio frequency may not only change our feeling but provoke incredible imagination. Chertoplyasov channels the artistic process through the imaginary character of Jivokost Okopnik, a chemist and musician. The scientist bravely experimented with sound and other materials that affect human

consciousness trying to exceed the bounds of habitual sensations. The results of Jivocost research created in music minimalist style, let us look at art history in a new, unexpected way. All the works of Juvokost Okopnik are written for rendering in ultra and infrasonic range.Arseniy Zhilyaev, curator of the installation explains:” “The project of Eugeniy Chertoplyasov is a rare example of original work with sound in Russian contemporary art joining the heritage of conceptual school and new technologies. His audio-installation is an attempt to build up an alternative history of the soviet vanguard arts. The main character of the exhibition is little known composer, futurist and mathematician: Jivocost Okopnik – the creator of substantive symphony.”

This February, the BFI Gallery presents the first London showing of ‘Marxism Today’ by British artist Phil Collins while two more British artists are on show at the Whitechapel Gallery: John Stezaker and Bethan Huws. With direct influences from the decades o f 1950s, 60s and 70s and from film, to collage, to installation art, these exhbitions take a look at contemporary culture with the eye of the aesthete.

Shining a light on what is generally perceived as the losing side in the political and social upheavals of the past two decades, ‘Marxism Today’ is an ongoing project that began by following the fortunes of former teachers of Marxism-Leninism in Communist East Germany.

Collins’ short fi lm ‘Marxism Today’ (2010), fi rst presented at the 6th Berlin Biennale, mixes contemporary interviews with ex-teachers alongside archive material in which snapshots of life in the old German Democratic Republic are offset with the teachers’ own recollections of the time, and their contrasting experiences after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Phil Collins investigates the nuances of social relations in various locations and global communities. Collins employs elements of popular culture, and sometimes operates within forms of low-budget television and reportage-style documentary. His works in fi lm, video and photography address the camera as an instrument of both truth and deception, often providing a platform for the disregarded and the overlooked. Collins has had solo exhibitions in Europe and the States and in 2006 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize.

John Stezaker’s fascination lies in the lure of images and the power involved in the act of looking. Taking classic movie stills, vintage postcards and book illustrations, Stezaker makes collages to give old images a new meaning. By adjusting, inverting and slicing separate pictures together to create unique new works of art, Stezaker explores the

subversive force of found images. The Whitechapel Gallery exhibition includes a panorama of over 90 works from the Seventies to today.

In the ‘Mask’ series he fuses the profi les of glamorous sitters with caves, hamlets, or waterfalls, to create images of eerie beauty. His ‘Dark Star’ series turns publicity portraits into cut-out silhouettes, creating an ambiguous presence in the place of the absent celebrity. Stezaker’s way of giving old images a new context reaches its height in the found images of his ‘Third Person Archive’: the artist has removed delicate, haunting fi gures from the margins of obsolete travel illustrations. Presented as images on their own, they take the centre stage in the viewer’s attention.

Following the London show and with the support of Louis Vuitton, the works of Stezaker will travel to Luxembourg where they will be on show at Mudam from June to September 2011.

Kirsty Ogg, curator of the Whitechapel gallery has put on an exhibition on Bethan Huws - a conceptual artist whose work addresses fundamental questions concerning the content and meaning of art, language and existence. Her bilingual upbringing in North Wales is often highlighted in her work, which includes watercolour drawings, wall texts, installation, sculpture and fi lm that make links to experiences of daily life and Huws’ own personal memories and cultural identity. Titling the exhibition Capelgwyn, which is Whitechapel in Welsh, the artist brings her individual history into the show. For her fi rst major solo exhibition in London since 1991, Huws’ sculptures and text works are presented at the Whitechapel Gallery.

The exhibition includes one of her signature works, the hand-crafted

sailing boat, which the artist learnt to make as a child. Designed to fl oat on water as part of a childhood game, the boats are made out of a single rush formed by intricately entwining the stem into a base and mast. This tiny vessel takes the viewer somewhere far beyond the physical confi nes of the gallery. The physical

aspects of the boat are echoed in a fl oor-based work, in which a raised platform covers over half of the gallery space. The horizontal surface of the new fl oor represents the boat’s keel while the viewer stands in for the mast. Although visually matching the existing fl oor, the new structure will subtly alter the viewer’s experience of the gallery, both spatially and acoustically. While Huws is interested in the natural world and

human endeavours within it, she is also inspired by Conceptual art of the 1960s and the work of Marcel Duchamp in particular. Alongside her sculptural works, Huws presents a series of new wall texts, based on her ongoing research into the French idiomatic expressions found in the work of Duchamp, such as his Refl ection in Hand (1948) and With my Tongue in my Cheek (1959). Based on one of these commissioned text works, ,Whitechapel has produced and made available a limited edition of prints.

In January most of us have post holiday blues. Party overdose, overindulgence, feeling the pinch around our waistband…. Equally the dawn of another year makes you feel the need of a fresh start and amongst all the New Year resolutions you might have taken there is at least one related to food.

Personally I am not in favour of sporadic and drastic dieting – whatever you lose you will eventually gain back. And banning certain favourites from your diet makes you feel unhappy. It’s defi nitely not the way to go. Eating healthy, eating seasonal and eating in moderation is the key to your success.

If you can’t give up sweets and deserts try substituting half of the butter with the same amount of avocado puree while making biscuits. It is proven that this reduces fat by 35% and calories by 13%. Or why not make a cake with pureed tinned cannellini bins. You end up eating great tasting desert without pangs of guilt…

But don’t despair, you still need your comforting food. Soups remain the ultimate feelgood food for frosty days. Enjoy a bowl of this vibrant vegetarian Borscht to brighten up your day.

January blues Guilt Free Chocolate Cake

Hands on time: 45 minIngredients for the cake: 410 tin cannellini beans, purreed and put through a sieve2 large eggs20g cocoa powder80g caster sugar30g fi nely ground walnuts2tbsp fi nely ground breadcrumbs1tbsp fresh lemon zest1tsp baking powder1 tbsp rumIngredients for the chocolate glaze: 100g plain cooking chocolate, melted30g butter, melted40g icing sugar1 tbsp water

Method:Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas mark 4. Grease and dust with fl our an 18 cm sandwich tin. Put tinned Cannellini beans through the sieve – you will get 250g of bean puree. In a large mixing bowl whip eggs for about 1,5 min. Add bean puree and the rest of the ingredients. Mix everything until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated. Don’t overbeat the mixture. Pour the cake mixture into the prepared tin. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 20-25 minutes. When ready take the cake out of the oven. Let it cool in the tin for about 10min. Transfer the cooled cake onto a serving plate.To make chocolate glaze, break chocolate into small pieces and put them into a glass bowl. Place the bowl into microwave on maximum for 3 min. Mix in the melted butter and 1 tablespoon of water till the mixture is smooth and glossy. To fi nish off spread chocolate glaze on the top of the cake and smooth it down the sides.

Not Very Traditional BorschIt’s hard to think of anything more Russian than Borscht;

it used to be a staple in a Russian kitchen. This particular recipe is my version and differs from the one you fi nd in

a traditional Russian cookbook but is my personal favourite.

It has been developed through trial and error and it’s as tasty as the conventional one but takes half the time.

Hands on time: 35-40 minutesServes: 5-6 peopleIngredients: 2 litres vegetable stock or a good quality vegetable stock cube will do the job

2 small raw beetroots, coarsely grated 1 medium onion, chopped 1 big carrot, coarsely grated 2 garlic cloves, sliced3 tbsp tomato ketchup 1/2 tsp hot chili spice blend (optional)2 tbsp tomato sauce3-4 tbsp vegetable oil 170g whitecabbage, shredded 3 medium potatoes, cubed3 tbsp fresh chopped mixed herbs (such as dill, fl at leaf parsley, coriander)

Salt and pepper for seasoning

Method:Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Sauté the beetroot, carrots, onion and garlic for about 7-10 minutes over a gentle heat, stirring regularly. Season well with salt and pepper. Don’t put too much salt in at

this stage as vegetable stock can be quite salty – you can always adjust the seasoning later. Add the ketchup, tomato sauce and chilli paste (if you’re using it). Continue cooking on a low heat for a further 5

minutes and then set aside. Meanwhile, prepare the vegetable stock and bring it to the boil. Put the cooked vegetable mixture into the stock, stir well, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Then add the shredded cabbage. After 5-7 minutes, add the cubed potatoes. Taste and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Cook partially covered for a further 15 minutes on a medium heat or until the

potatoes are tender. Toss in the fresh herbs a couple of minutes before the end. I always think it’s better to eat Borscht the next day when all the fl avours are incorporated. So plan it in advance!

I like to serve Borscht with a dollop of sour cream, a slice of Russian rye bread or any type of rye bread topped with parsley butter. You can also sprinkle fresh parsley on top for additional fl avour and colour.

In January Valentin Gaft visited London with Sovremennik Theatre. Sovremennik made its UK debut with a repertoire of three plays. This is the first time the major Russian theatre company performed in London in over twenty years. The tour was supported by Roman Abramovich.

Sovremennik presented Eugenia Ginsburg’s Into the Whirlwind, followed by a pair of Chekhov classics: Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard.

On January, 27 Pushkin House hosted an evening with Valentin Gaft. The venue was spacious; however, there was no room to swing a cat – the event attracted lots of people who

wanted to share the intimate evening with the legendary actor.

Valentin Gaft presented his sharp epigrams and well-turned verses, alternating them with the stories that led to their creation. He began the evening with a remark that he started his career in Sovremennik just recently – 42 ago. This period, however short it might seem to the author, produced an immense number of amusing and inspiring stories.

Revealing the origin of one of the epigrams, Valentin Yosifovich passingly told the audience about the movie that is going to be released in March, although it was shot 17 years ago. The movie is based on Bulgakov’s «The Master and Margarita», and most of the screen adaptations of this novel have mysterious karma. However, this particular version is very signifi cant because of the prominent cast and the composer Alfred Schnittke. Valentin Gaft enacts Voland.

Valentin Yosifovich shared an incident that happened in St. Petersburg. He came across a book of epigrams with his own name on the cover, and found out that only a couple of them were truly his; the rest of the epigrams were «criminally obscene». Some of the epigrams written by Valentin Gaft involve expressive

language, however, it always sounds apposite. Once he took part in a TV-programme called «Kulturnaia Revoluciya» («Cultural Revolution») hosted by Mihail Shvydkoi, the former Minister of Cultural Affairs. The particular show was dedicated to the matters of obscene language, and the standpoint of Valentin Yosifovich is that some people possess the art of using swear words in literary context, but it sounds terrible

in someone else’s mouth. There is no doubt, however, that Valentin Gaft belongs to the fi rst category. Only a truly intelligent person with language intuition can successfully employ swear words as means of expression. Probably there is no coincidence that the video that was shown at the evening featured Valentin Gaft presenting a story by Sergei Dovlatov is another example of a talented story-teller with feel for language.

One of the biggest excuses for not starting a fi tness routine is, “I don’t have time.” I understand that completely. I am “lucky” right now in that I have extra time to devote to fi tness. I am currently unemployed and although searching for jobs takes up a lot of time, it is certainly not taking up as much as a job would. But I have been in the situation where I felt like I did not have an extra minute to devote to anything.

There really is no secret to fi tness in a busy schedule. The fact is… you have to MAKE time!

In the past I would work a 9-10 hour day (sometimes a 14-16 hour day), come home to care for the kids, have meetings or kids activities in the evening, put the kids to bed, and if I was lucky have an hour to relax before going to bed. The last thing I wanted to do with my hour or two of relaxation is fi ll in that time with something else. This is where you have to dig deep.

Fitness is important to your overall well-being. If you stay fi t, you will be happier and healthier, not to mention live longer. In Runner’s World Magazine last month they talked about how fi tness can even help you beat the winter blues. With all of the studies done about how

important fi tness is, how can you afford NOT to make time.

So, how can you make time? That is something that is very unique to you and your schedule, but let me give you some ideas that you may be able to use:

1. walk at lunch – pack a light lunch like raw vegetables, fruit, almonds, yogurt, etc., you can eat the raw vegetables while you are walking and then leave enough time to eat the yogurt during the last 5-10 minutes of your lunch break

2. pack your gym clothes – if you have to work all day and then have a meeting or something in the evening, take the time to go for a run or go to the gym in between. Even 15 minutes of exercise is better than none.

3. workout during commercials – if you are the type of person who likes to relax in the evening and watch your favourite television program, use the commercials to workout. Sit-ups, crunches, push-ups, jumping jacks, etc. Every little bit helps

4. wake up early – For some of us, myself included, we do not like mornings, but if you would resign yourself to wake up 30 minutes earlier each day, you could get some exercise in before you start your day

5. stay up late - I am not a morning person so I prefer to workout in the evenings. I’m willing to stay up an extra hour each night to workout

6. don’t look for the closest parking spot – some people will drive around a parking lot for 15-20 minutes looking for the closest spot to the door. STOP! Park away from the door. This forces you to walk – and walk with purpose, don’t just meander to the door, make every step count.

7. take the stairs – I’m sure you’ve heard this before, well here it is again. Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. This will help you burn calories and even work on your quads. But take the stairs with purpose, don’t be timid.

It starts with little changes in your life to help you add in some fi tness. Ten to fi fteen minutes a day will get you started and then maybe you can add in some more as you go. Once you start a routine and stick with it you will be surprised at how easy it becomes and how much your body will crave it. Don’t overwhelm yourself with the need to fi t in an hour a day. People often do not realize how much working out can change your life for the better. Russia’s attempts to present itself as a modernising force and a good place for business came under sharp attack in Davos after Bill Browder, the investor waging a campaign against state corruption, took the Deputy Prime Minister to task in a private session.

Russia has taken a leading role at this year’s annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, with President Dmitry Medvedev delivering the opening speech and an entire forum given over to «Russia’s Next Steps to Modernisation».

However, attempts to drum up business interest in the country were dealt a blow at the forum by Mr

Browder, the founder of Hermitage Capital Management who was once the largest foreign investor in Russia.

He demanded Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov answer questions about an alleged $230m state-orchestrated fraud that led to the death of his investigative lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.

Mr Magnitsky, working in Moscow for Mr Browder, uncovered evidence allegedly showing that criminal elements in the police and the judiciary worked hand-in-hand with the Russian mafi a to steal $230m of taxes paid by Hermitage in 2006 from the state.

Mr Magnitsky was charged with tax avoidance by one of the police offi cers he had testifi ed was implicated, jailed and died in custody a year later of medical complications while awaiting trial.

The case has become a national scandal, provoked a backlash from politicians in Europe and the US, and shaken investor confi dence in Russia.

«The President of the country called for an investigation into the people who killed my lawyer,» Mr Browder told a panel chaired by Mr Shuvalov and a hall packed with Western executives.

«One year after the investigation, people who killed the lawyer have been promoted higher by state orders... My question to you, Igor, is what will prevent other investors to have the same experience after my experience in Russia,» he said at the discussion.

Mr Shuvalov responded: «We know this case very well... Twenty people were fi red immediately... It was not a case which was forgotten the next day. Unfortunately, I don’t know the results of the investigation and the end of the case... The past is always very important, although not always positive, but we need to concentrate on the future. You have to acknowledge the country is changing for the better. If every year we can say that the rule of law is becoming better, not perfect but better, then I think I’m doing my job… We need to work together».

Mr Browder contends that those fi red from the jail system were not involved in either the alleged fraud or death. The police offi cers Mr Magnitsky identifi ed have been promoted.

The episode was in contrast to more moderate comments from other delegates. Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo, said: «The government is doing everything possible to encourage foreign investors.»

President Medvedev, in his opening address, said the country was stamping out corruption and enforcing the rule of law. He proceeded to inform delegates that he wished to turn Moscow into a fi nancial centre,

reminding them that Russia «will not introduce any special taxes on the fi nancial sector». Russia is already developing a technology region, becoming known as Russia’s Silicon Valley.

Terrorist attack in Domodedovo has taken the lives of 35 people and has once again demonstrated the vulnerability of Russia’s position in terms of ensuring the safety of its nationals and foreigners.

The explosion at the airport on January 24 could cost the country more than it seems at fi rst glance. The investment climate of January 2011 has been completely damaged.

In connection with the terrorist attacks, Western experts have already declared that the infl uence of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who puts the security of Russia ahead of everything else, will strengthen. Because of the tragic events of Monday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was forced to postpone his trip to the Economic Forum in Davos, which has signifi cantly damaged the investment image of Russia. But most importantly, the fact that foreigners were killed in the attack dramatically brings down the position of Russia in the eyes of European and U.S. investors. This will obviously affect the state of the stock market.

Investors still do not have confidence in the Russian investment climate.

Despite the fact that trading opened in the green zone on Tuesday, the Russian stock market may expect hard times. According to Fincake, until the end of the month the market expects growth in the range of 1-2%. The main reason for the correction is the explosion at Domodedovo, and it is diffi cult to speak about continued growth that was observed during this month. Head of Analytical Services IC ITinvest Prospect Alexander Potavin believes that the sale of shares

on the fact of the explosion at the international airport Domodedovo is unlikely to be replaced by the return of buyers to an active market.

According to him, «sadly, but investors have become accustomed to the fact that this type of tragedy has become the norm for modern Russia. For them, the situations in the oil market, in foreign markets, as well as charts of indices are more important.»

Second-hand for presidentKremlin administration has purchased a yacht for President Dmitry Medve-dev. The yacht, registered in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, will serve as Medve-dev’s «floating office».

It has two whirlpool baths, a cinema and a range of 5,000 nautical miles. At £26m the 54-metre Sirius may look a little ostentatious for a world leader whose people have an average salary of £400 a month.

Reports in Moscow say the Kremlin bought the boat last year from the Proteksan-Turquoise company in Istanbul, changing its name from Leo Fun. The craft’s «sophisticated and luxury interior features» include a large salon, a master suite and fi ve guest cabins, quarters for 12 crew and an artifi cial waterfall encased in glass. Twin staircases lead to a bathing platform with «a wide array of water toys and diving equipment».

Medvedev’s administration confi rmed it had acquired a new yacht but refused to verify the price, or whether it was the Sirius. Viktor Khrekov, a spokesman, told it had bought a second-hand craft late last year.

It is thought the Sirius will replace the presidential yacht, Kavkaz, which is already overdue for decommissioning.

Analysts believe it was no coincidence that Medvedev’s purchase emerged this week as he visited the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Behind a public mask of unity, business and political clans in the Kremlin and government are engaged in a struggle for power as the 2012 presidential election approaches.

Some want the supposedly more progressive Medvedev to continue,

while others are behind Putin, the hawkish prime minister who is expected to return to the presidency.

Earlier this month, Russian websites published photographs of a secluded £600m palace on the Black Sea coast which a businessman alleged was constructed secretly on Putin’s orders using money donated by oligarchs to develop Russia’s economy. The prime minister’s spokesman has dismissed the claims. «When we hear about a yacht or a palace it’s clear that someone hasn’t just walked past and noticed it by chance,» said Nikolai Petrov, an expert on internal politics at the Carnegie Centre, Moscow. «We practically don’t have investigative journalism in Russia, we have different forms of leaks,» he added.

«Yeltsin’s strength helped us live through a diffi cult period when the foundation of Russia’s statehood was being created,» Medvedev said at the ceremony in Yekaterinburg, the Urals city in which Yeltsin was born and launched his political career.

The monument – a white marble obelisk imprinted with Yeltsin’s image – stands 33ft tall and is the fi rst major political statue to be

unveiled since the Soviet Union’s collapse.

«The monument expresses determination and will – the traits that were most characteristic of Boris Yeltsin,» Medvedev said.

Most Russians remember Yeltsin otherwise. While he rode to the Kremlin in 1991 as the man who challenged Communist attempts to hold onto power, he is better known for the drunken antics and failed

economic policies that marked his later years as president.

Until recently, the Russian leadership remained largely quiet about Yeltsin’s legacy. His hand-picked successor, Vladimir Putin, has decried the 1990s as a time of chaos and built his own popularity on crafting a tough and controlled image that contrasts sharply with Yeltsin’s.

Putin was notably absent from the ceremony, which was attended by Yeltsin’s widow and two daughters.

It was timed to coincide with what would have been Yeltsin’s 80th birthday. He died from heart failure in 2007, having long been out of the public eye.

Events have been staged around Russia to celebrate his birthday, with a memorial concert due to be held at the Bolshoi Theatre tonight.

State-run media have widely reported the celebrations. That may shock most Russians, with some 56% continuing to think Yeltsin did more harm than good for the country, versus 20% who remember the Yeltsin years as a good era, according to 2009 research by Russian pollster VTsIOM.

Yet his legacy is an important one for the Russian leadership. Putin came to the presidency on New Year’s Eve 1999, when Yeltsin went on national television to resign.
