Задолго до начала гастро-лей московского театра «Современник», русскоя-зычный Интернет Велико-британии буквально взор-вался поисками лишнего билетика – все билеты на спектакли с 21 по 29 янва-ря были раскуплены еще в декабре.

И не мудрено – ведь это первые за 20 лет гастроли такого крупного репертуарного российского театра в Лондоне. Гастроли готовили целых два

года. Лондон – едва ли не самая трудная столица для российских антрепренеров. По словам Оксаны Немчук, генерального продюсера

тура, театральная система в Англии такова, что очень сложно получить достойную площадку для таких коротких гастролей. А площадка эта – Noel Coward Theatre – нахо-дится в самом центре знаменитого театрального района West End.Открылись гастроли спектаклем

по повести Евгении Гинзбург «Кру-той маршрут» об ужасах сталинизма и сталинских лагерей. Поставлен-ный в 1989 году художественным руководителем театра Галиной Волчек, он принадлежит к редким и высоким образцам публицисти-ческого, антитоталитарного театра. Его пронзительный строй до сих пор никого не оставляет равнодушным. Это подтвердила и лондонская публика – потрясенная, она со слезами на глазах десять минут аплодировала актерам Марине Нееловой, Лии Ахеджаковой, Нине Дорошиной и другим.

Специально для спектакля «Крутой маршрут» в вестибюле театра установили скульптуру «во-ждя народов» высотой шесть футов (1,8 метра) для создания атмос-феры эпохи, в которой происходит действие этого скорбного опуса-предостережения.Помимо «Крутого маршрута»,

публике представлены еще два спектакля. Это хорошо известная здесь чеховская классика – «Три сестры» и «Вишневый сад».Все без исключения лондонские

издания подчеркивают, что приезд «Современника» в Лондон – осо-бое событие. Здесь часто бывают

музыкальные театры, оперные и балетные труппы. А вот драматиче-ский театр – редкий гость. Между тем Британия связана с русским театральным искусством самыми крепкими узами: гении русской сцены Федор Комиссаржевский и Михаил Чехов оставили здесь нема-лый след. Не говоря уже об Антоне Чехове, которого здесь ставят и любят не меньше, чем Шекспира.

«“Современник” обещает что-то более обнадеживающее, нежели мишурный русский капитализм или нелепый советский социа-лизм. Волчек говорит, что ее театр создает драматургические виде-ния “энциклопедии человеческих чувств, мыслей и отношений”. Эти гастроли должны стать одними из лучших российских гастролей.»The Guardian

участие в проекте, который уже окрестили как «самый амбициоз-ный международный шекспиров-ский проект в истории». Между тем театр «Глобус» объявил о проекте воссоздания зала. Так что теперь аудитория может в полной мере окунуться в атмосферу театра времен английского Ренессанса. Ожидается, что работы начнутся в следующем году.

Пилот был пьян...полет не удалсяБританский суд приговорил к полугоду тюрьмы пилота американской авиакомпании Delta Airlines за попытку совершить рейс в состоянии алкогольного опьянения.

По версии следствия, охранники лондонского аэропорта Хитроу, почув-ствовав от пилота запах спиртного,

не пустили его на самолет. Проверка показала, что вместо разрешенных для пилотов 0,2 промилле алкоголя у Джорджа Ла Перла в крови было об-наружено 0,89 промилле. Сам летчик утверждал, что накануне вечером выпил несколько бутылок пива. Кроме того, отвечая на вопрос,

куда направляется его самолет, Ла Перл перепутал пункт назначения, назвав вместо Детройта Нью-Йорк. Американец должен был управ-лять авиалайнером Boeing-767, на который зарегистрировались 240 пассажиров. Кроме него в команду входили еще два человека.

Следствие также выяснило, что Ла Перл, проработавший летчиком 20 лет, страдает алкоголизмом. Каким образом авиакомпания допускала его к полетам, не сообщается. Также неясно, будут ли Delta Airlines в этой связи предоставлены какие-либо обвинения.

Предположительно, речь идет о возможно-сти синхронизировать музыкальную коллек-цию пользователя на смартфоне с коллекцией на виртуальном сервере. Для этого пользо-вателям будет достаточно нажать на специ-альное поле Sync Music («синхронизировать Music») Однако Google пока не объявлял официаль-

но о запуске сервиса с подобным названием. Неизвестно, будет ли синхронизация доступна только при подключении к компьютеру, или музыку можно будет загрузить с помощью беспроводного соединения Wi-Fi или по сетям мобильной связи. Вместе с тем опция по синхронизации му-

зыки доступна всем пользователям Android-

смартфонов, загрузившим и установившим приложение Music Player. Это приложение можно установить на смартфоны и планшеты на базе Android, однако пока пользователям доступны не все его возможности.

Google имеет собственный магазин при-ложений для Android-смартфонов – Android Market. Этот магазин является аналогом Apple App Store. В то же время Apple имеет и отдельный клиент iTunes, который позволяет покупать и загружать музыку непосредствен-но на портативные устройства компании. Также iTunes можно установить и в качестве компьютерной программы. Будет ли Google выпускать компьютерную программу наподо-бие iTunes, пока не сообщается.

Умирает ли британская рок-музыка? Рок-музыка, сформиро-вавшая вкусы по крайней мере двух поколений бри-танцев, сейчас пережива-ет не лучшие времена.

По только что опубликованным данным, в минувшем году в список ста наиболее успешно продаваемых музыкальных композиций вошли всего три рок-песни. Такого не было полвека – со времен начальной сла-вы таких гитарных групп, как Beatles и Rolling Stones, с появлением кото-рых рок занял ведущее положение в хит-парадах и на радиоволнах. В чем тут дело, чем объясняется такое музыкальное оскудение?Песня группы Journey под назва-

нием Don’t Stop Believing стала рок-бестселлером прошлого года – и это притом что написана и впервые ис-полнена она была 28 лет назад. Ее использовали в телешоу, и она снова обрела популярность. Но особенной конкуренции у рок-произведений в британском топе просто не было – всего три песни в этом жанре вошли в список ста наиболее успешных хи-тов 2010 года.В начале 1960-х в британских

хит-парадах властвовали лирические балладисты типа Энтони Ньюли, кото-рых с восторгом покупали девочки-подростки лет 13-и. Но тогда же на-чалась бурная экспансия гитарно-го рока – появление таких групп, как сначала Shadows, а потом и Beatles, знаменовало музыкальную револю-цию. Начались десятилетия торже-ства рока в хит-парадах. Облик жан-ра не раз менялся – от хипового арт-рока конца 1960-х до панк-рока 70-х и далее – к музыке больших стадионов, но коммерческий успех неизменно сопутствовал именно та-кой музыке.Почему же публика перестала по-

купать классический рок, а вместо этого разделилась на фрагментиро-ванную аудиторию, которая больше интересуется хип-хопом, техно, рэ-пом и прочей, не совсем массовой, музыкой.

«Cо времен Arctic Monkeys ни-каких новых групп просто не по-является, – констатирует Бен Кар-дью, сотрудник журнала Music Week. – Ясно, что происходит нечто более значительное, чем просто какие-то циклические перемены во вкусах и предпочтениях публики. В 2008 году рок-песен в списке ста было 28, а спустя два года – всего три. Популяр-ные рок-группы типа Kings of Leon,

Продавец с ником jaybuysthings, живущий в США, утверждает, что сумел выяснить его имя, сопоставив данные о продажах работ художника с налоговой документацией. Стартовая цена лота составля-

ла три тысячи долларов. На момент

окончания аукциона цена равнялась $999,999 тыс. Как утверждает продавец,

выигравший аукцион человек будет единственным, кому он сообщит настоящее имя Бэнкси. Непосред-ственно товаром, который он про-дает, является бумажка с написан-ным на ней именем. Как объяснил jaybuysthings, его предыдущий ана-логичный аукцион был отменен из-за отсутствия «товара» как такового, поэтому он выставил информацию на продажу именно в таком виде. Бэнкси – самый известный в

мире представитель стрит-арта. Он прославился благодаря своим граф-фити, которые начал рисовать на стенах домов английского Бристоля. С возникновением моды на стрит-арт его работы стали продаваться на аукционах известных домов, а цены на них достигали сотен тысяч долла-ров. Кто именно стоит за псевдони-мом Бэнкси, достоверно неизвестно. В разное время утверждалось, что настоящее имя художника – Робин Бэнкс, Роберт или Робин Каннингем, однако эта информация так и не была подтверждена.

Около шестисот фотографий и восьмисот негативов были сделаны личным фотографом фюрера Ген-рихом Хоффманом в годы, предше-ствовавшие Второй мировой войне. Среди них есть снимки, на кото-

рых Гитлер запечатлен на встрече с итальянским диктатором Бенито

Муссолини, в ложе на Олимпийских играх 1936 года, на занятиях в шко-ле «Ваффен-СС», а также на нацист-ском митинге в Нюрнберге. За все фотографии и негативы по-

купатели заплатили примерно $48 тыс. Аукционист Джонатан Хамберт рассказал, что снимки вызвали ажиотажный интерес у публики. По его словам, фотографии дают воз-можность с новой стороны посмо-треть как на Германию 1930-х го-дов, так и на самого Гитлера. Архив Хоффмана попал в руки американ-цев после его ареста в 1945 году. Самого фотографа Гитлера осудили за спекуляцию и посадили в тюрь-му. Он умер в 1957 году.

За все фотографии и негативы поку-патели заплатили примерно $48 тыс.

К нам обращаются граждане РФ, находящиеся в Великобритании, с вопросами по поводу оформления и обмена загранпаспортов. Сегодня мы публикуем наиболее часто задаваемые вопросы и ответы на них.

?Я нахожусь в Великобритании восемь лет. Загранпаспорт истек в 2003 году,

внутренний российский паспорт утерян, да и срок его действия давно закончился. Я по-прежнему прописан в России. Можно ли мне получить новый загранпаспорт (ОЗП) в Великобритании?

Вам нужно будет в первую очередь запро-сить через посольство подтверждение наличия у вас гражданства РФ. Эта процедура может занять достаточно продолжительное время – до нескольких месяцев. После того как посольство получит подтверждение, оно будет готово при-нять от вас документы на новый ОЗП.Если у вас утеряны и внутренний россий-

ский паспорт, и ОЗП, то посольство сможет оформить вам только свидетельство на возвра-

щение в РФ, которое действует 15 дней. В тече-ние этого срока вы должны будете вернуться в Россию, получить новый внутренний паспорт и там подавать на ОЗП.

?У меня просрочен внутренний россий-ский паспорт. Могу я получить новый ОЗП

в консульстве РФ в Лондоне, если предыду-щий действителен еще 5 месяцев? Нужно ли подтверждать наличие гражданства РФ?

При наличии действующего ОЗП гражданство подтверждать не нужно, и не имеет значения, просрочен ли Ваш российский внутренний па-спорт или нет. Просто подавайте документы на

новый ОЗП по установленным правилам. Мы всем рекомендуем подавать заявки на оформ-ление новых ОЗП за 4-5 месяцев до окончания срока их действия. Напоминаем, что на время оформления нового паспорта действующий ОЗП остается у вас на руках, и с ним можно будет путешествовать без ограничений.

?Моя действующая виза в Великобрита-нию – в старом паспорте. Обязан ли я

переставить визу в новый паспорт?

Это не обязательное требование. Вы можете это сделать, если считаете более удобным для себя, а можете путешествовать с двумя паспор-тами. Процедура перестановки визы в новый паспорт занимает 4-6 недель. Предусмотрена также услуга Premium Service, воспользовав-шись которой вы можете решить проблему в течение нескольких дней.

?Я гражданка России и Великобритании. Российские паспорта просрочены –

как внутренний, так и ОЗП. В британском паспорте у меня другая фамилия, которую я поменяла не по причине заключения брака, а по некоторым иным соображениям. Могу я получить новый ОЗП на новую фамилию?

В вашем случае последовательность дей-ствий следующая: вы должны подать запрос на подтверждение наличия гражданства РФ, затем получить новый ОЗП на старую фамилию, и только после этого подавать заявление на сме-ну имени/фамилии, так как такие заявления принимаются только при наличии у заявителя действующего ОЗП. Затем вы должны подать в России документы на новый внутренний паспорт с новой фамилией и, по его получе-нии, переоформить загранпаспорт на новую фамилию.

Подлость таксистов, взвинтивших цены, и реакция нормальных людей, бес-платно подвозивших пассажиров. Руководство аэропорта, восста-новившее нормальную работу, ожидающее очередного раунда затянувшейся войны. Медики, уже не удивляющиеся тому, что востребованы, оказывается, на-выки военно-полевой хирургии в мирном городе. Версии высказывают самые

разные. От мести Кавказа за Манежку и речи Жириновского, до попытки сорвать визит президента в Давос. Конечно, упоминают и боевиков, и заговор спецслужб, и начало избирательной кампании. Все кому не лень проводят исто-рические параллели. Раздаются крики о том, что ФСБ уже неделю знала о готовящемся теракте, но прошляпила. И не случайно,

а в преддверии коллегии, дабы потребовать себе дополнительных полномочий и финансирования. Вопросы задают и о причинах вы-бора Домодедово (вроде смертник ехал из Зеленограда), и о системе проверки посетителей здания аэровокзала. Много вопросов и привычных ответов. Почти все уверены, что ско-

Да, идет война. И на Россию направлен основной удар, пото-му что Россия - самое слабое зве-но среди европейских стран. Ни одна страна Европы не уничтожа-ла с таким остервенением сво-их лучших граждан, как это дела-ли большевики в России. Нацио-нальное самосознание уничтожа-лось и, поэтому, мы стали самым слабым звеном. А слабых били, бьют и всегда бить будут.

Проблема в нынешнем ре-жиме. Это абсолютно очевидно. Все правоохранительные органы заняты коммерческой и крими-нальной деятельностью. Это тоже все знают. Милиции без разницы – хоть с атомной бомбой, только денег дай. Это будет продолжать-ся дальше и больше. На улицу выходить надо. Наши правители с мигалками народ на трассах гробят, их охраняют, у них свои самолеты, им вообще поровну – хоть термоядерная война, лишь бы у них бабло было.

Из мглы вековПервые плоские зеркала на основе

ртутно-оловянной амальгамы появи-лись в начале XVI века во Фландрии, но секрет их изготовления довольно бы-стро был выведан мастерами из Вене-ции. В конце XVII века французы усо-вершенствовали технологию и научи-лись делать зеркальное полотно боль-ших размеров. На Руси, по утвержде-нию историков, большие зеркала были не в чести вплоть до воцарения Петра I, в эпоху правления которого стали не просто важными, но обязательными элементами интерьера.

И хотя стоили они баснословно до-рого, это не останавливало честолюби-вых аристократов и особенно аристо-краток.

Блестящий выборВ наше время покупка зеркала, к

счастью, не сделает вас банкротом – цены на рынке вполне приемлемые, а выбор моделей без преувеличения огромен.

Если вы не любитель иллюзий и ме-таморфозы, многократное повторение вызывает у вас скуку, фрагментарность и дробность раздражают, а слово «бес-конечность» наводит на печальные раз-мышления – значит, зеркала в вашем доме необходимы лишь для практиче-ского применения. Достаточно будет снабдить ими прихожую и ванную.

Пятое измерениеСо времен барокко зеркало заслу-

женно считалось одним из самых мощ-ных инструментов, позволяющих соз-давать в интерьере иллюзорное про-странство. Если расположить два зер-кала друг против друга, отражение пре-вращается в бесконечный коридор, символ вечности.

ВАШ ДОМ

С практической точки зрения кривое зеркало в интерьере совершенно бес-полезно. Однако не каждый дизайнер-декоратор согласится с таким утверж-дением. Пожалуй, наиболее головокру-жительный эффект создают в помеще-ниях именно искривленные зеркала (или псевдозеркала из деформирован-ных листов полированного металла). Их отражение – настоящая сюрреалисти-ческая живопись.

Еще один вариант: части зеркала расположены под углом друг к другу. От-ражение «ломается», но при этом со-вершенно не искажается, возникает своеобразная мозаика.

Большой популярностью пользуют-ся зеркала, составленные из отдель-ных элементов (круглых, квадратных, неправильной формы). Не стоит забы-вать и о семейных традициях. Один из «бабушкиных» рецептов – зеркальные этажерки для комнатных цветов. Глу-хая или плохо освещенная стена бла-годаря такому нехитрому приспособле-нию превращается в цветущую оран-жерею.

Ослепительный эффектСвет и цвет – еще два великолепных

средства для создания необыкновен-ной атмосферы в доме.

Источники света лучше располо-жить симметрично по обе стороны зер-кала и чуть выше верхней кромки по-лотна (в двух метрах от пола, но не бо-лее). Система подсветки больших на-стенных или потолочных зеркал слож-нее. Это либо специальные карнизы, либо шины, на которых закреплены лампочки. В любом случае, простран-ство у зеркала должно быть очень хоро-шо освещено.

Цветные зеркала (обычно золоти-стого, серебряного, зеленого и голу-

бого оттенков) бывают двух основных видов: изготовленные из стекла, тони-рованного в массе, или с цветным от-ражающим слоем. В любой зоне инте-рьера (ограничение распространяет-ся лишь на ванную) они создают вели-колепный декоративный эффект. Кро-ме того, многое зависит от стиля. Мо-дерн, например, просто невозмож-но себе представить без тонирован-ных зеркал причудливой формы. Ми-нимализм не терпит излишеств и яр-ких красок, но цветное зеркало лишь деликатно смягчит его подчеркнутую суровость.

Приукрашенная действитель-ность

Существуют тысячи возможных ва-риантов оформления зеркал: от мас-сивных барочных рам с бронзовыми канделябрами до тонкой металличе-ской окантовки в стиле хай-тек. Наибо-лее распространенные материалы для рам – дерево, металл, стекло и пластик. Говорят, что традиционный багет сей-час не в моде, но все зависит от сти-ля интерьера. Классика по-прежнему остается классикой.

Зеркало должно висеть строго вертикально (любое отклонение ис-кажает изображение), на него ни в коем случае не должен падать пря-мой искусственный свет (освещать надо не зеркало, а то, что оно отра-жает) и прямые солнечные лучи (от перегревания оно тускнеет). Рас-стояние от пола до верхней грани-цы полотна должно составлять не меньше 170-180 см, а до нижней границы – минимум 40-50 см.

По законам фэн-шуй нельзя устанавливать зеркало напротив двери. Считается, что в таком слу-чае дом теряет жизненно важную энергию.

и автопром Туманного Альбиона умудряется из каждой

выпущенной на островах модели сотворить культ. При

этом абсолютно не важно, удачный автомобиль полу-

чился или нет. Герой нашего теста родом из Великобри-

тании и давно носит статус легенды. Правда, послед-

нее – четвертое – поколение Land Rover Discovery заста-

вило задуматься: в чем же его кардинальное отличие от

предшественника?

И вот он передо мной: большой строгий внедорожник с геометриче-ски правильными формами кузова и аэродинамикой кирпича. Постой-те, но ведь Discovery 3 точно такой же! Хорошо, у «четверки» новая ре-шетка радиатора а-ля Range Rover. Ну, еще новая оптика с габари-тами-светодиодами и головной свет, способный «заглядывать» за поворот. Задние фонари получили прозрач-ные кругляши-рассеиватели. Чуть из-менилась форма бампера – вот и все отличия в экстерьере. Не густо.

Образец лаконичностиНастоящий любитель дикой приро-

ды и канала Discovery должен ездить на Discovery. В этом я убедился, рас-положившись на водительском ме-сте. Не припомню еще автомобиля, обзорность в котором была сродни аквариуму. Площадь остекления ко-лоссальная! Боковые зеркала можно не регулировать: в них видно все во-круг. Кстати, в салоне Disco 4 нет ни одной детали, которая напомнила бы мне о предшественнике. Интерьер полностью переработан: кресла, па-нель приборов, отделочные материа-лы – все новое.

Салон выглядит действительно ро-скошно. Приятная на ощупь кожа, руль с подогревом, электроприво-ды сидений и рулевой колонки, но главное – никакого хаотичного на-громождения мелких кнопочек, не-понятных крутилок и дисплеев. Те-перь центральная консоль и органы управления – это образец лаконич-ности, эргономичности и стиля. Ди-сплей между спидометром и тахоме-тром (неожиданно монохромный) отображает режимы работы основ-

ных систем автомобиля. А в центре торпеды расположился полноценный сенсорный экран информационно-развлекательной системы. Удобная штука, но требует некоторого вре-мени для изучения всех ее функций. Кстати из-за нее-то кнопочек и поу-бавилось.

Для любителей передовых техно-логий автомобиль оснащается как USB-портом, так и отдельным входом для гаджетов от Apple.

Шустрый малыйНесмотря на то что сегодня не

многие внедорожники отправляют-ся покорять бездорожье, конструкто-ры Discovery 4 расположили контрол-лер системы полного привода Terrain Response на приливе центральной консоли – под блоком управления микроклиматом. Там он будто бы ма-нит на бездорожье, хвастаясь режи-мами трансмиссии. Но чистый са-лон, дорогая кожа, ворсистые коври-ки – неужели этот автомобиль никог-да и нигде не застрянет? Или истин-ные джентльмены или леди на таких машинах ездят исключительно по ас-фальту?

Но сначала в город. Нажимаю на кнопку запуска двигателя и толь-ко по приборам определяю, что ав-томобиль завелся. Шумоизоля-ция что надо! Под капотом нашего Disco установлена новая трехлитро-вая турбодизельная V-образная ше-стерка, которая выдает 245 л.с. и 600 Н*м крутящего момента. Могу сказать, что на трассе или в город-ских условиях мощности более чем достаточно. Не спорткар, конечно, но чуть меньше 10 секунд до сот-ни – результат для полноприводно-

го автомобиля весом 2,5 тонны впе-чатляющий.

Я уже говорил про великолепную обзорность, но настоящим откро-вением стала маневренность это-го корабля: он способен развер-нуться чуть ли не на носовом плат-ке! Предшественник на такие пиру-эты способен не был. Устойчивость в скоростных поворотах – еще один плюс «четверки»: пневмоподвеска не дает кузову крениться. Прибавь-те к этому расход в 14 л солярки на сотню – и вырисовывается идеаль-ный автомобиль для большой се-мьи. Но довезет ли он семерых до места пикника?

Что такое бездорожье?Для Land Rover грунтовка – такое

же шоссе. Пневмоподвеска прогла-тывает и мелкие, и крупные неров-ности. Съезжая на откровенное без-дорожье, перед водителем стоит вы-бор: какой из пяти внедорожных (по тяжести преодоления: дорога, гра-

вий/снег, грязь/колея, песок, кам-ни) режимов выбрать? Помимо них движение облегчают пять камер об-зора (две спереди, одна сзади, две в боковых зеркалах), изображения с которых одновременно выводятся на центральный дисплей, дорожный просвет в 310 мм и две блокировки дифференциала.

В дневные часы вид на город может быть за-крыт смогом или желтой пылью, а вот ночные виды прекрасны при любой погоде. HereAfter is the latest creation of the legendary actor and director Clint Eastwood, and his second collaboration with Matt Damon.

The movie can be looked at from two perspectives – as great pieces, or as the fi nal image that does not come out as intended. The movie is about three different people, each person has a personal relation with death, Matt Damon’s character is a psychic, Cecile De France had a near death experience, and a young boy who lost his twin brother, portrayed by Frankie and George McLaren. These characters all live in different countries and suffer in different ways, yet all are looking for answers. Eastwood has taken upon the task of tackling the question of after life in a new light, showing Hollywood that

big budgets can be used differently for the same purposes. If the pieces are taken apart, the movie works. The acting of the main characters is very good, the idea is good, the script is good, the camera work is also good, yet when put all together it doesn’t seem to be as harmonious and resembles a fairy tale. The mellowness of the fi lm can render the viewer confused to the reaction they are supposed to have and to understand what the movie is about. Due to the trailer and numerous contradictory reviews the audience goes to see the fi lm with too many ideas of what is supposed to be and in result none of it works in that way. One suggestion – before watching this fi lm, forget all you know about it.

Presenting the new and much talked about exhibition on Modern British Sculpture at the Royal Academy of Arts, Martin Creed’s ‘Mothers’ and Diana Thater’s ‘Chernobyl’ installations at Hauser & Wirth, these prestigious Piccadilly galleries are this week’s hot spots for modern and contemporary art enthusiasts.

2011 opens at the Royal Academy of Arts with an exhibition that examines twentieth century British sculpture. It has been 30 years since such a show was curated in the UK and this one aims to show a representative but also unique view of the development of British sculpture. Exploring the terms ‘British’ and ‘sculpture’ by bringing the two together in a chronological series of strongly themed galleries, the main galleries showcase distinctive visual arguments as a product of a fresh curatorial approach.

The exhibition examines British sculpture’s dialogue within a broader international context, highlighting the ways in which Britain’s links with its Empire, continental Europe and the United States have helped shape an art that at its best is truly international in scope and signifi cance. The selection of works is not limited to the British Isles, but looks outward at Britain in the world including sculpture from Native American, Indian, and African traditions. These are being represented by a series of signifi cant loans from the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, which are shown alongside modern British sculptures from the period 1910-1930, a time when London was the fi nancial and cultural centre of the world.

The selection also explores the choices constantly faced by the sculptor: the choice between fi guration and abstraction; a choice that highlights the inherent

tension in sculpture between its commemorative and political functions. Key juxtapositions exemplify these choices, including the striking comparison between Phillip

King’s Genghis Khan (a work by a former president of the Academy) and Alfred Gilbert’s Queen Victoria and Edwin Lutyens’ Cenotaph and Jacob Epstein’s Cycle of Life that opens the exhibition.

Hauser & Wirth, the international megawatt gallery, is opening two exhibitions this month: ‘Mothers’ by Martin Creed at the new space in Savile Row and ‘Chernobyl’ by Diana Thater at the Piccadilly gallery.

‘Mothers’ is a highly anticipated exhibition by the contemporary art followers as Martin Creed returns to London after a very busy last year of a series of critically-acclaimed international solo shows, performances and installations. Creed has occupied the two different galleries with a monumental installation in the north gallery one and with a series of works of a variety of media in the south one. In recent years Creed has worked on music, dance, writing, sculpture and painting: pieces ranging from compositions for symphony orchestra and music for elevators to architectural commissions, public monuments and dance and performances which combine classical ballet with talk, music, fi lm and animation. Creed

defends his choices with optimism: ‘Trying to do what you want to do, trying to be free and trying not to do what other people want you to do. If you can do that, it’s amazing’.

For over two decades Diana Thater has explored the precarious relationship between culture and nature. This new project took the artist to the post-nuclear landscape of Chernobyl in Ukraine . The outcome of this experience is presented at a new video installation that fi lls the interior of Hauser & Wirth’s Piccadilly gallery with images of the Chernobyl site as it is today. For this work, Thater spent time in the ‘Zone of Alienation’ which surrounds the site of the nuclear disaster, fi lming the eroded architecture and wildlife of the one-hundred mile wide radioactive

territory. The animals thrive in the absence of humans, demonstrating a wilderness of man’s making. The installation focuses on the rare and endangered Przewalski’s Horse. Once facing certain extinction in its native habitat in central Asia, this sub-species of the wild horse now roams freely in the ‘Zone of Alienation’. The desolate remains of an abandoned movie theatre in Prypiat, a city founded to house the Chernobyl nuclear plant workers, form the backdrop of Thater’s installation. The city’s decomposing architecture is juxtaposed against the footage of the wild animals living in the ‘Zone of Alienation’. The installations aims

at exposing the audience to an experience of a world where a man-made catastrophe has abruptly halted all progress and animals inhabit an irradiated

landscape. Overlaying physical and fi lmic spaces, Thater confronts the successes of civilisation with its profound failure. The last reactor at Chernobyl was closed down in 2000.

This interview did not require much effort to demonstrate the popular appeal of Andrey Kovalev. The setting spoke for itself: as we were talking in a London cafe, a woman asked Andrey for an autograph, and her friends were also expressing their heartfelt thanks to Andrey for the music he plays with his rock band called the Piligrim.

First of all, let me congratulate you with the Piligrim’s fi fth anniversary that you celebrated in December 2010. How did you spend it?

We had a big concert dedicated to the anniversary; it was staged by Lina Arifullina. That the best way to celebrate it!

Five years is usually considered as a fi rst important milestone for any enterprise. Did it encourage you to sum up the achievements?

Well, it’s still too early to sum up. We released

4 albums, visited dozens of places during our tours, met our fans – but it still feels like the very beginning. There are many changes ahead, many experiments planned. Still, whenever I look back, I get the feeling that something could have been done differently – like musical arrangement or video cutting. As a rule, in the process of production of songs or videos you cannot look at them from the outside. And when the time passes, you can look at the result as a third person and notice the tiny fl aws.

You mentioned that you plan to bring something new into your music, what kind of experiment is it going to be?

It regards our new album – the Piligrim XXX – in Cyrillic transcription the xxx reads as an abbreviation of “heavy hip-hop”. That’s what we want to bring together – hard rock and hip-hop. We’ve already started a contest for young hip-

hop musicians: the new album will include the tracks that win the vote, and the best musician will join our band. Also, the Piligrim XXX will contain tracks recorded in collaboration with Ligalize and Snoop Dogg.

The Piligrim is well-known for collaborations with world celebrities, like Pamela Anderson and Dolph Lundgren in videos or Apocalyptica in music. Do your personal friendly relations

lead to creative cooperation?Yes, they often do. This kind of creative

cooperation brought me to London this time – we are discussing it with one internationally acclaimed English band. I think the public will be able to hear the song at the end of 2011.

Your political career as a member of Moscow City Duma is probably best known for the successful measures taken against “lips singing” at the concerts and anti-piracy campaigns. What about changes in favour of bikers?

Well, a motorcycle in Moscow is indeed a luxury article, especially after the increase in transport tax. One more problem is that the drivers’ behavior needs to be acculturated – they treat bikers irreverently. But I think the situation is changing for the better.

Speaking of “mute singing” – I do feel that to fi ght against deception at concerts is more than just to tilt at windmills. It works, and there are more and more live concerts. Moreover, the recent economic crisis revealed many fake celebrities – many singers had to start tours, as the earnings from corporate parties went down, and people simply did not buy the tickets for their shows.

Do you need any specifi c atmosphere or place to write a song? What inspires you?

Frankly speaking, I don’t need any particular ambience. Music and lyrics just fl ow so naturally, so easily. Sometimes it caused amusing situations when right after an important meeting

I had to run to any empty room to use the voice recorder, just not to forget a tune. And this is why we produced so many albums already – I just cannot keep new songs for several years, I want to release them immediately.

My name is Karina Baldry and 7 years ago I switched the icy streets of Moscow for the rainy shores of Great Britain. It surprised me that Brits do not know a lot about Russian food. Their knowledge is mainly limited to the very stereotypical Russian delicacies: caviar and vodka. However there is much more about Russian food, as well as the way Russians live, shop, travel and celebrate.

Several years ago I decided to enlighten the British public about the intricacies of Russian food and festivities by writing a cookery book through the eyes of a foreigner. Not the usual pickle and starchy dough, and not your average caviar and vodka affair. The food represented in my book takes in fl avours from all around the former Soviet Union. This is a fresh and exciting opportunity for an adventurous foodie to explore an unknown territory of proper Russian cuisine, and a chance to dispel the myth about Russian food of considered boring, uninspiring and bland!


Everything I do, I do on the principle of Russian borscht. You can throw everything into it beets, carrots, cabbage, onions, everything you want. What’s important is the result, the taste of the borscht.

RUSSIA ON A PLATERUSSIA ON A PLATE

Cook cod fillet into hot boiling milk for about 5-7 minutes. Lift the fish out with a slotted

spoon onto a plate. Flake it. Meanwhile cook the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain

well. Return the pan with potatoes to the hob on a low setting. Quickly mash potatoes with a

fork – they should be dry and fluffy. Stir all the ingredients into the mash – prawns, beetroot,

cucumbers, spring onions, herbs and seasoning. Gently add flaked cod. Don’t mix it for too

long otherwise the fish will break up. Add an egg to bind the fish mixture. Use your hands

rather than a spoon for mixing. Form 12 patty-shaped cakes. Press into the breadcrumbs

all over. Heat the oil in a frying pan. Fry fish cakes for about 4-5 minutes each side or

until golden and heated through. Serve the fish cakes with a simple green salad and chili

flavoured sour cream - mix one pot of sour cream (142g) with a tablespoon of hot chili spice

blend.

Ingredients:

500g skinless white fish fillet, poached andflaked

400ml milk

70g ready to eat prawns, chopped

3 (70-80g) dill pickled cucumbers (orgherkins), finely chopped

1 medium cooked beetroot (150g), coarselygrated or chopped into small pieces

500g cooked potatoes, roughly mashed

2 tbsp dill and parsley, finely chopped

2 sprigs spring onion, finely chopped

1 tsp paprika

Salt and pepper

Breadcrumbs plus for dusting

1 egg for binding

To serve:

142g pot sour cream

1 tbsp hot chili spice blend (see page XX)

200g mixed salad

Fish cakes with a difference. I put some of my favorite ingredients together into fish

cakes as an experiment and it worked. They happen to complement each other in

one dish.

Back in the day, cod was an obvious choice for a white fish recipe. Nowadays there

is a huge focus on sustainability - when possible, opt for an eco-friendly choice of

fish such as Icelandic cod, North Sea coley or Alaskan pollock.

First make the dough. Rub the butter and flour together until it is crumbly, then pour the

beer/tonic water in and mix until it comes together. Make a ball, put it on a plate, cover with

cling film and put it in the fridge to chill for about an hour.

Meanwhile, make the filling. Finely grind the walnuts and mix them with sugar and

cardamom. Add 1-2 tablespoons of milk just enough to bind the mixture so that it resembles

a paste. Mix it well.

Pre-heat oven to 200˚C / gas mark 6. Lightly flour the work surface. For easy rolling, I divide

the dough into two batches. Roll out the first batch of dough thin and cut out triangles

(approximately 8-10cm each side). This amount of dough should make about 25 pastries.

Put slightly less than 1 teaspoon of the walnut mixture along the wide side of the triangle and

roll it up like a croissant. Don’t overfill them otherwise the filling will come out during baking.

Put the pastries on to a baking sheet lined with a piece of baking parchment paper which is

lightly greased and dusted with flour. Brush each pastry with egg wash or milk and bake in

the pre-heated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden. To make an eggwash I use one

egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon of milk. Transfer them on to a plate, sprinkle with icing sugar

and serve. Beware – they are seriously moreish!

Ingredients for the dough:

100g butter

160g flour

¼ cup beer or tonic water

Ingredients for the filling:

70g ground walnuts

70g caster sugar

¼ tsp freshly ground cardamom

expert in baking - used to send us a parcel from the Caucasus with festive goodies

and the parcel was not complete if we didn’t find Baddam Burri pastries inside. It

was our little ritual on New Year’s Eve to hurry to the train station to receive the

anticipated tasty bundle which was handed to us by a friendly train conductor.

Start off at Charing Cross (Tube / Rail). Head left out of the station

walking towards Trafalgar Square with its famous fountains and Nelson’s Column. Once you’ve crossed the square, turn down Whitcomb Street to the left of the National Gallery and enter Leicester Square via Panton Street on the right. Go diagonally across and exit by this corner of the square, walking up towards Leicester Square Tube. You’ll go past the Arts Theatre and continue down Long Acre until you reach Covent Garden Tube. Turn right here into James Street and at the end you’ll fi nd Covent Garden Market waiting to be explored. Come out of the market at the opposite side to where you entered and head down Southampton Street back towards the Strand. From here walk left, take the fi rst turning on the right to the riverside and then keep heading left (or east) along the Embankment - don’t miss the great view of the London Eye from here. When you come to the Millennium Bridge, you’ll see St Paul’s Cathedral set back from the river in all its magnifi cent glory. As you cross the steel footbridge make sure you take in the views down the river all the way to Tower Bridge. London’s medieval red light district, Bankside, lies at the other side of the Thames but is now characterised by the Tate Modern, housed in the old power station. Head left along the river, passing Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, turning away from the Thames when you get to London Bridge. You’ll soon come to Borough High Street. Borough Market is on your right as the road branches off to Southwark Street. After spending a mouth-watering time among the stalls, go back to the High Street where you can hop on a Tube at London Bridge (Tube / Rail) station.

Long but leisurely.Highlights – Harrods, Serpentine, Camden Lock Market.Overview – Starting off in the heart of shoppers’ paradise, Sloane Square, this walk then leaves the likes of Prada and Jimmy Choo in its wake to discover the more serene side of the city. And what better place to start than the waters of the Serpentine, on which you can get to grips with paddles by taking a rowing boat for a spin. It’s worth packing a Frisbee too

as there are some great spots for a game. As you meet Regent’s Canal, you will enter a world of colourful narrowboats and stunning waterside streets and then the scenery will change again when you come to the fl urry of activity in Camden Town.

If you get to Sloane Square Tube in time for lunch Oriel is a buzzing bar and brasserie on the square at the forefront of Chelsea society. To the east and west lies fashionable King’s Road, and Sloane Street – off the top of the square – is bursting with designer shops. At the end you’ll come to Knightsbridge where the star of shops worldwide, Harrods, awaits just round to the left on Brompton Road. Do spend a moment or two within its luxurious walls before crossing Knightsbridge and heading

straight into Hyde Park. Stop by the Serpentine, and then head north on the boundary with Kensington Gardens – it’s worth nipping across to see the famous statue of Peter Pan. Turn left on leaving Hyde Park and then right into Westbourne Street and continue on this road under the Westway bypass until you get to Blomfi eld Road. Turn right here and start to follow the course of the Regent’s Canal through Little Venice,

past Primrose Hill (with its brilliant view of the city) and London Zoo at Regent’s Park and all the way into Camden Town with its vibrant markets every way you turn. The Lock Tavern awaits up Chalk Farm Road to the left of the canal for a well-earned pint or two before heading down Camden High Street to the Tube.

Four Russian officials connected to the London branch of a major international bank set up to develop free markets in eastern Europe are being investigated for corruption by both Britain and Russia.

The London-based European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which is owned by 61 countries including Russia and the European Union and European Investment Bank, said it had removed diplomatic immunity from the employees at the request of the Foreign Offi ce and Russian authorities in order to help police investigations in both countries.

Russia’s economic development ministry confi rmed the name of one of the employees as Elena Kotova, who has been dismissed from the board of directors; she had been a member since 2005.

The ministry did not name the other three employees, but said Russia’s prosecutor general’s offi ce has ordered an investigation into the activities of the four.

An EBRD spokesman in London said three of the four offi cials under investigation worked in the EBRD’s Russia directorate in London; the

fourth used to work there.An internal inquiry for the EBRD led

to the request to remove immunity. Carried out for the bank by outside experts, it found that the offi cials had breached the bank’s code of conduct. The fi ndings were passed to Russian authorities and the bank said it would share them with British police.

The EBRD has agreed to a request from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Offi ce and from the Russian authorities to lift the immunity of four offi cials assigned to the EBRD by the Russian government.

The purpose of lifting the immunity is to facilitate investigations by UK police and by Russian authorities into alleged criminal activities.

The offi cials either work or have worked at the EBRD in their capacity as representatives of the Russian government, a shareholder of the EBRD and one of its countries of operations

The institution was established in 1991 to help former communist countries in eastern Europe adjust to free markets. It is responsible for investing huge amounts of money in the region – last year it invested €9bn (£7.6bn), including €2.3bn in Russia.

Russia seems to be the forgotten member of the BRICs. But with news of the recent BP-Rosneft deal , PepsiCo’ s acquisition of Wimm-Bill-Dann – as well as Russian companies such as Chelyabinsk and Koks preparing to float in the UK – more eyes are now on this undervalued market.

While the UK and other «developed» economies are drowning in government and personal debt, the «emerging» nations including the BRICs – Brazil, Russia, India and China – will lead global economic growth over the next few years.

This is because they have now reached a critical mass, both in global economic and political terms, at which they have become their own masters.

Russia is one of the most important and perhaps represents the most exciting investment opportunity. First, like Western Europe in centuries past, Russia has cast aside a long standing «anti-growth» political regime – fi nally setting the upward grinding process of capitalism in motion.

The precedents around the world are telling, such as China’s political reforms from 1978 following the death of Mao Zedong, or even the pro-merchant reforms following the 1688 Glorious Revolution in England.

The lesson is straightforward: the replacement of anti-market regimes

with pro-market regimes results in an economic growth revolution. And this is happening today in Russia, following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia’s «market moment» in the 1990s was marred by a rushed and hijacked transition from communism to capitalism, and the country suffered a decade of turmoil in which the standard of living for the majority of the country actually declined relative to life under communism.

However since the year 2000, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, and Dmitry Medvedev the Russian economy has grown at an average annual rate of over 5%.

A large middle-class of Russian consumers is emerging, representing exciting investment opportunities. Second, in a world where around two-fi fths of the global population are living in two countries that are growing in economic terms at close to 10 per cent a year – India and China – Russia’s natural resources are becoming more and more valuable.

Its strength in oil and gas is well known – Russia ranks above Saudi Arabia as the world’s biggest crude oil exporter, while supplying 27% of the world’s gas reserves.

It also has world class reserves in iron ore, coal, nickel and chrome, second only to South Africa.

Russia is one of the world’s largest producers of platinum, palladium and diamonds and is the only country with the potential to grow its gold production.

Then there is the fact it is home to a quarter of the world’s forestry, with vast reserves of timber and water.

And Russia’s share in the world grain market has grown from 1pc to 14% in the past decade. It will also benefi t from trade with other emergent nations.

Trade turnover between Russia and China surged 1,200% between 1998 and 2008, and we expect similar growth over the next decade.

We also expect trade between Russia and India to take off over the next decade, as both countries climb the top ten rankings of the world’s economies by size.

The main concerns that investors have about investing in Russia are

about corporate governance, property rights and corruption.

These are legitimate concerns, but Russia is not dissimilar to other emerging markets in this respect.

It simply means it is vital for investors to look into the details of companies, including management, in addition to understanding the overarching economic themes.

The Russian stock market

outperformed most other global markets strongly in the second half of 2010 as Russia’s economic growth rose above 5 per cent again following the global recession, and as commodity prices rose on the back of global growth.

We see this outperformance continuing during the next few months, representing a good buying opportunity for the long-term investor.

Goodbye Lenin?Russians have again been offered to determine their attitude to the burial of the remains of Vladimir Lenin. Since the death of the Bolshevik leader in 1924 his body has been kept in a mausoleum – a monu-ment-tomb on Red Square in Moscow. This time the initiative comes from the ruling party United Russia.

Experts assess the idea differently, although commonly recognise the need for the society to solve the problem. Some believe that this issue must be approached with caution, since it could exacerbate tensions in the country. Others believe that this initiative is purely electoral in nature.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, some public fi gures and politicians have repeatedly raised the issue of expediency of the burial of Lenin’s body, for example, at the Volkovo Cemetery in St. Petersburg, where Lenin’s mother and sister are buried. In particular, the late head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexy II and ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, have called for the burial of the remains of Lenin. The Communists and representatives of various pro-communist organisations have always been defenders of the mausoleum.

This time, United Russia, namely, member of the party’s General Council and State Duma deputy Vladimir Medinsky, put forward the initiative on the eve of the anniversary of Lenin’s death on January 21. «Lenin is an extremely controversial political fi gure and his presence as a central fi gure in the necropolis in the heart of our country is extreme absurdity,» Medinsky argues.

United Russia launched an Internet resource under the intriguing title goodbyelenin.ru – in tune with the famous fi lm (2003) about the fate of

the people of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), directed by Wolfgang Becker. Internet users were invited to share their opinions on the fate of Lenin’s body.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) strongly condemned Medinsky. «The Russian people have already decided: Lenin will stay. The idea of his burial has already become outdated. United Russia will be forgotten, but Lenin will remain,» secretary of the Communist Party Valery Rashkin stated. According to head of the CPRF legal service Vadim Solovyov, by putting forward such initiatives United Russia diverts public attention from its failures and socio-economic problems.

The Communists suspect United Russia of deliberately «rigging» votes in favour of the proposal. Rashkin said on Radio Ekho Moskvy that the objective view of the public could be learnt only by means of special polls with which the website has nothing to do, in the view of the CPRF member.

Meanwhile, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM), even in 2009 as many as 41% of Russians believed the preservation of Lenin’s body in the Mausoleum was wrong

and unnatural, and only 15% of respondents supported the idea of keeping the proletariat leader’s body on the main square of the country.

The authorities have until now tried not to intervene in the discussion on the subject, not wanting to aggravate relations with the Communists, who take it to heart. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, responding to questions from members of the Valdai Club in September last year, said that the issue of burial will be settled in due time. According to him, the time will come, and the Russian people will decide how to proceed with this. «History is such a thing that requires no fuss,» Putin said. President Dmitry Medvedev has not publicly commented on this topic.

Medinsky’s idea was backed by his supporters in the State Duma. However, as the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper pointed out, there have also been more cautious statements – «obviously made by those who fi gure out how many votes of the conservative electorate the party will lose on these appeals.»

Head of the presidential Institute of Contemporary Development Igor Yurgens, who was quoted by the publication, is cautious about the removal of Lenin’s body from the mausoleum. He believes this theme bears too much confl ict: «The country has already had too many tension spheres. To create another one, which would be called, fi guratively speaking, ‘the removal of Lenin from the

Mausoleum’ – would mean for the country’s leaders and the ruling party the loss of at least another 15-20 percent of the left-wing electorate.» That would be an extremely short-sighted policy, in the view of Yurgens.

Member of the Scientifi c Council of the Moscow Carnegie Centre Nikolai Petrov links the current debate in the society with a de-Stalinization campaign that has been recently launched by the Presidential Council for Civil Society Institutions Development headed by Mikhail Fedotov. The expert noted that there has been a change of generations, and now few people care about the issues that 10 years ago caused a

great disturbance in the society. «And in this sense they are convenient for the Kremlin by giving a good signal to the West.»

The expert in general positively assessed the idea of United Russia. «Some kind of mobilisation is needed in the current conditions for the election campaign. It is usually negative here – the oligarchs, the West, and so on, are declared enemies. And now if Lenin and the parting with the past comes to play the role of these enemies – there are not so many candidates for it – it will be much more positive than if United Russia found something else.»

Lenin’s outward appearance was distinguished by simplicity and strength. He was below the middle height, with the plebeian features of the Slavonic type of face, brightened by piercing eyes; and his powerful forehead and still more powerful head gave him a marked distinction.

They needed to create a cult, substituting religion, and make something out of Lenin, a replacement of Christ.»

President Dmitry Medvedev vowed that those behind the attack would be tracked down and punished. He ordered increased security across Russia’s capital, its airports and other transport hubs. Mr Medvedev also called an emergency meeting with offi cials and also postponed his planned departure for this week’s World Economic Forum at Davos.

Airport spokeswoman Yelena Galanova told Interfax news agency that the explosion occurred in the international arrivals hall in a public area «to which people who are not passengers have free access».

The hall was packed as several international fl ights - including one from the UK - had just landed. The device is thought to have contained

the equivalent of 7kg (15lb) of TNT.According to eyewitnesses before

detonating the explosives the bomber shouted: «I’ll kill you all!»

Briton Mark Green, who was on a British Airways fl ight that landed at the airport before the explosion, told there were thousands of people in the baggage collection area, baggage hall and queue for immigration at the time of the blast.

«We were walking out through the exit of the arrivals hall towards the car, and there was this almighty explosion, a huge bang... my colleague and I looked at each other and said ‘Christ that sounds like a car bomb or something’, because the noise was, literally, it shook you,» Mr

Green told.In the aftermath of the explosion,

Mr Medvedev told Russian state television a commission of inquiry would be established «to conduct urgent on-the-spot investigations».

Police are hunting for three suspects in connection with the bombing, Russian media report.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy called for those behind the attack to be punished, and British Prime Minister David Cameron telephoned Russian President Medvedev to offer his condolences and support.

«We should never allow the terrorists to win,» said Mr Cameron.
