Please direct any questions regarding the Annual Drinking Water System Report to Sandra Brunet, Manager of Water Operations at (705) 739-4220 Ext. 4866. 2010 Drinking Water System Report M ark your calendars, street sweeping is set to start mid-April. Every year, the spring sweep is carried out as soon as weather permits to prevent sand and other debris from entering the storm water system. So sweeping not only improves the aesthetics of City streets and parking lots, but benefits our environment as well by reducing the amount of pollutants running off into downstream waterways. “We collected nearly 1452 tonnes of sand and debris last year,” says Roads and Parks Operations Manager Craig Morton. Based on a successful pilot program in 2009, the City does its own sweeping, controlling costs and improving service delivery. The savings also allows Barrie to carry out additional sweeping throughout the year. Sweepers will start in both the northeast and southeast corners of the City, heading towards the Landfill (272 Ferndale Drive North) using a multi-step process that could last two or three days. First the sand is flushed from the center of the road to the curb, followed by both a mechanical and vacuum sweeper that pick up the sand and debris. A flusher will then make a final pass to flush the leftover fine sand. Collected sand is hauled off to the landfill where it is recycled as cover. After over 20 years of sweeping, the City does run into some problems, the biggest being cars parked on the road. Here is how Morton suggests you prepare and help the City clean our streets: 1. Do not leave vehicles on the road during the street sweeping period. If someone parks in front of your house while your street is being swept, call the Operations Department at (705) 739-4855 and the City will attempt to return the next day. 2. Do not sweep sand into piles on the road. Since sweepers are mechanically designed to work only on normal build-up of sand collected along the curb edge, residents are asked to leave the sand in its normal state and help the City sweep more efficiently. 3. Don’t worry if the sweeper has passed and you still have a sandy mess left behind. This could have occurred because the sweeper is to be followed by a second sweep. Or, the mess could be the result of rain, which tends to spread the sand around. In this case, the sweeper will return when it is not raining. Have more questions? See the City Services under the Living section of www.barrie.ca or enter “Street Sweeping” in the search field. You can also contact the Operations Department at telephone (705) 739-4255, and press #1 for information. Yard Waste Collection Starts up again on April 4 th in the City of Barrie! The City of Barrie’s Water Operations Branch has prepared the Annual Drinking Water System Report in accordance with the Drinking Water Systems Regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

The Annual Drinking Water System Report is available at www.barrie.ca and a hard copy can also be obtained, upon request, during normal business hours (8:30–4:00) at the City of Barrie’s Water Operations Branch located on the second floor of the Operations Centre at 165 Ferndale Drive, North.

2010 Drinking Water System Report

Mark your calendars, street sweeping is set to start mid-April. Every year, the spring sweep is carried out as soon as weather permits to

prevent sand and other debris from entering the storm water system.

Here is how Morton suggests you prepare and help the City clean our streets:

1. Do not leave vehicles on the road during the street sweeping period. If someone parks in front of your house while your street is being swept, call the Operations Department at (705) 739-4855 and the City will attempt to return the next day.

2. Do not sweep sand into piles on the road. Since sweepers are mechanically designed to work only on normal build-up of sand collected along the

curb edge, residents are asked to leave the sand in its normal state and help the City sweep more efficiently.
