Barrie has over 51 km of recreational trails, 39 km of signed bike routes and 5.6 km of on-road bike lanes. The Nine Mile Portage trail runs between Barrie’s Memorial Square and historic Fort Willow in the Township of Springwater. Its history dates back to early aboriginals and was used later on by the British military during the War of 1812, and early settlers. For cyclists, Barrie has a network of on-road routes, roadways with laneways and multi- use trails displayed on the City’s online map. Approximately 20 km of Trans Canada Trail passes through Barrie, connecting us to the Town of Innisfil to the south and the Township of Springwater to the northwest. Bicycle laneways are available on Mapleview Drive east of Yonge Street, on Veteran’s Drive between Salem Road and Harvie Road, and on Ferndale Drive South between Tiffin Street and Summerset Drive. The City of Barrie has an Adopt-a-Park and Adopt-a-Trail program as a community service for volunteers to assist in keeping our parks and trails safe from vandalism and free of garbage. To become involved, register online through the City’s web page or call the Engineering Department at (705) 739-4207 during regular business hours. Barrie releases a new map in mid-June to be made available at various City buildings, the Barrie Library and Tourism Office. Barrie has over 51 km of recreational trails,

COMMITTEES OF COUNCIL

Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee – On May 3, 2010, Council approved establishing a Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee. The powers and functions of the Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee are established in subsection 81 of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. The purpose of the Committee is to receive and make decisions regarding applications for compliance audits of candidates’ 2010 municipal election campaign fi nances and any by-election campaign fi nances during the 2010 to 2014 Council term.

The Committee will be comprised of three (3) members of the public to be appointed for a term to expire November 30, 2014. Membership is not restricted to citizens of Barrie.

Please note that those individuals who are employees or offi cers of the City or any of its local boards, members of City Council or any of its local boards and any persons who are candidates in the municipal election will be disqualifi ed. Any persons who have a personal or professional relationship with any persons who are mayoral or councillor candidates in the municipal election will also be disqualifi ed.

The City of Barrie is seeking applicants’ with the following qualifi cations and backgrounds:

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of campaign fi nancing rules of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996;• Proven analytical and decision making skills;• Experience working on Committees, task forces or similar settings;• Understanding of quasi-judicial proceedings;• Availability and willingness to attend meetings (daytime and/or evening);• Excellent oral and written communication skills;• Accountants and Auditors with experience in preparing or auditing the fi nancial statements of Municipal candidates;• College or university professors with expertise in political

science or local government administration;• Legal profession with experience in municipal law, municipal election law or administrative law;• Professions who in the course of their duties are required to adhere to codes or standards of their professions which may be enforced by disciplinary tribunals.

A meeting per diem will be paid for each of the members appointed to the Municipal Election Compliance Audit Committee.

NOTICE OF TAX BILLING AND

INSTALLMENT DUE DATE

The 2010 fi nal tax bills have been issued for all property owners in the City of Barrie. These bills were mailed between May 27th and June 7th.

IF:• a mortgage company is responsible for payment of the taxes, and you have received a bill, please be advised that this is for “Your information only” and no payment is required;

• a tax arrears notation appears on your tax bill it means that at the time of tax billing there were outstanding taxes and/or penalty owing. Please contact our offi ce for the current balance outstanding;

• you signed up for the Pre-Authorized Payment Plan prior to May 15, 2010 and your tax bill does not refl ect this, please contact the Tax Department to confi rm enrolment in the PAP plan.

Final installments are due June 28 and September 27, 2010.

Penalties/interest will commence on the fi rst day of each month for any late payments. Penalty/Interest rates are at the rate of 1.25% per month. Please be advised that all payments received are applied fi rst to all penalties owing, then the remainder to the taxes owing.

Failure to receive a tax bill does not excuse the property owner from responsibility for payment, nor relieve him/her from liability of penalty for late payment.
