October 16-20 Bordered by Duckworth St. and St. Vincent St., Queen St., Wellington St . Burbank Pl., Blue Mound Dr., Rose St., Roslyn Rd., Cynthia Cres., East St., Marion Cres., Shannon St., Pratt Rd., Lay St., Howard Cres., Bellevue Cres., and Grove St. E. lustery fall weather notwithstanding, both the newly renovated Eastview Arena and the new Fire Station 1 headquarters, forge on full-speed ahead as they round the last bend and approach their open doors deadline, when they will be fully operational and serving our community. Renovations at Eastview Arena began this past June in response to meeting the needs of our growing community, the provincial standards, and to increasing the overall functionality of this long-standing facility within our community. Eastview Arena was redesigned with the provision of a phased construction schedule. Phase I centers on the new construction “addition” and should be substantially complete by November 2010. Phase II focuses on the renovation portion of the project estimated to be completed by December 2010. When completed, Eastview Arena will have increased in size, safety and functionality, meeting both Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (ORFA) standards and current Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) standards. So when Eastview Arena opens its doors this fall, residents will benefit from: • Fully accessible family washroom facilities • Appropriately sized change rooms • New community meeting room • Enhanced lobby area with heated viewing gallery space • Enhanced referees change room • Smaller 5th change room to accommodate user needs (i.e. gender privacy) • Added safety operations to accommodate ice resurfacer machine Renovations also include such sustainable and environmental design features as high efficiency heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) systems, low-flush units in washrooms, energy efficient lighting, and electrical systems upgrades. With construction and renovation phases on schedule, Eastview Arena plans to open its doors to the public by fall 2010 with ice- making operations scheduled to commence October 15th. Likewise, construction of Barrie’s new Fire Station 1 is in full swing. The new headquarters cornering Dunlop and Eccles Streets will replace the current facility on Vespra Street. The new facility addresses not only Barrie’s current needs, but also the future growth needs for communications, fire prevention, training, and suppression. By addressing these long- term needs now, the new headquarters will eliminate the necessity to build the space in the future at higher costs and assure efficient service delivery for a long time to come. The Project has received Infrastructure Stimulus Funding from the Federal and Provincial Government as part of the economic action plan with a requirement that the project be substantially complete by March 30, 2011. Once completed, the new Fire Station 1 will feature exciting urban design elements of an urban plaza, a heritage room, a bell tower (a traditional fire hall element), in addition to interpretation panels and public art to enhance this facility, which will stand as a civic gateway into the City Centre and provide an enjoyable on site experience for regular facility tour participants from school groups and the general public. Most importantly, the new 40,000 square feet Fire and Emergency Services facility will include a full 911 Dispatch Communications Centre and an Emergency Operations Centre. As construction is on schedule, the new Fire Station 1 headquarters plans to open its doors in Spring 2011. What will happen to the current Vespra Street facility has not yet been determined. Click on the ‘Eastview Arena Renovation Project’ link on www.barrie.ca to see more arena updates and images. For more Fire Station 1 updates, key project milestones, and images, click on the ‘Fire Station 1 Construction Updates’ link. Your vision may be chosen as the City of Barrie’s Christmas Card for 2010. Each entry must be accompanied by a signed entry form as supplied by the Mayor’s Office. Entries may be a water colour painting, oil painting, pen and ink drawing, photographs, etc. Minimum size of original artwork – 4” x 6” Maximum size of original artwork – 8”x10” A monetary award will be made to the winner.
