This week we have been celebrating WOW Week in the primary school. This has been an opportunity for the students to celebrate that they are God's Masterpiece. We know the students have had a great week. The students and their families are invited to come along on Friday night for more fun and activities for our Pop-Up Next week our Upper Primary students will be heading off on their camps. Our Grade 6 students would normally have been travelling to Kangaroo Island, but unfortunately due to the bush fires the accommodation that our students normally stay at has been destroyed. Their new destination is Ballarat and we wish them well as they travel interstate. Camps are a great opportunity for students to explore areas within Australia as well further develop friendships and enjoy time together. I would like to encourage all parents to closely monitor the online activities of their younger children. It is very important that students are not giving information about themselves online such that they can be identified. Furthermore we would like to remind students that they are not permitted to upload photos of themselves or their peers in their school uniform. this is strong identifier for students and we need to avoid any issues from a person identifying where a student attends school. Thanks for taking note of this and supporting your child in being safe online. Our secondary school students had a rather cool but enjoyable swimming carnival at Marion last week. It was great to see the students being willing to get involved and support their teams. Overall it was great day that was well-coordinated by Mr Phil Hodges and Mr Trent Martin. Thank you staff!! IN CLOSING We are each unique but no matter what we are all God's Masterpiece. We can celebrate who we are because God has made each of us to be uniquely Ephesians 2:10-22 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. PRESCOTT COLLEGE SOUTHERN NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020 WEEK 6 TERM 1 From the Principal

The Year 3’s went swimming for three sessions. The students appreciated the refreshing lessons during thevery humid weather. The various groups catered for different ability levels. The instructors introduced many different types ofequipment and safety gear. There were life jackets being worn and obstacle courses being followed. Therewere pool noodles and other fun water toys to teach students how to float and dive under water. There were many smiles and friendships made from the other Year 3 class. Swimming was a great start tothe year! Ingrid Croft

By now Primary School students have been doing homework for 2 weeks! Each classroom teacher has senthome a note outlining their expectations for homework. Homework is considered to be an integral part of theacademic program at Prescott College Southern. The main purpose of homework is to practice and drill the important areas of Reading and Spelling. Studentswill receive this homework at the beginning of each week.In addition to this student’s will receive a Language booklet and a Maths book appropriate to their levels to becompleted at their own pace. Once the Language booklet/s are completed students return them to school andthe next book in the series is given. A Homework bag is issued at time of enrolment and is kept from year to year for use by your child.Other homework will sometimes be given where there is a need for additional practice or where the student didnot complete work that day and therefore needs to be completed. Teachers will notify you if this is the case. Furthermore, some children may benefit from alternative activities as part of their Homework program. It is important to remember that all children work at a different rate and not all will complete the assignedtasks. As a school we recommend that students spend the following amounts of time each night (Monday-Thursday)on homework;Rec - Gr 2 15 minutes/nightGr 3 – Gr4 20 - 30 minutes/nightGr 5 - 6: 30 - 45 minutes/night NOTE: No Primary School Homework is set for the first and last week of each School Term. Parents may best assist their children in Homework by noting the following:1. Expect that some Homework be done each night 2. Insist that your child does the work carefully and of a good standard3. Leave your child’s homework the way they have done it – it is important the staff know what the child iscapable of out of school. 4. Supply a quiet place in which Homework may be completed Helpful Hints to encourage your child in their Reading Homework1. Create a non-threatening environment in which your child can concentrate on learning without fearingrejection if he fails.2. Set a time each day to read to your child and have your child read to you.3. Talk to your child about what they have read, encourage them to say how they feel or understand by thereading.4. Avoid telling a word before your child has time to ponder about it.5. Allow mistakes if they do not change the meaning of the text - then go back at the end of the page and checkthat your child can read the word.5. Visit the library or bookshops with your child to encourage a love of literature.6. Have Fun - make it a happy special time of your day.

Last Thursday was the first carnival day for 2020 for our secondary school students. 300 eager students ventured to Marion Outdoor Pool to support their team houses and compete in a variety ofcompetitive and novelty events. An incredible atmosphere surrounded the pool with students dressed up in a multitude of amazing outfits andcolours, cheering each other on. On the day 16 records were broken across 25m and 50m events, with multiple records going to Jair Chan, ZaliiReid and Lewis Paton. Congratulations to Flinders for taking out the day with a huge effort in the pool and great attendance fromtheir students.
