Although the Taj Mahal of Agra is the " romantic" destination, there are also great treasures to be found in the cities of Jaipur (the pink City), Jodhpur (the blue City), and Udaipur (the lake palace). There is also magic in the fairy tale city of Jaisalmer, looking like a giant sand castle fort on the hill adjacent to the Thar Desert. There will be a digital slide presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions. D id you know that during the Holiday season, the average Canadian family sends up to 45% more waste to the landfill? The bad news is that holiday trash can have quite the impact on our landfills. The good news is that many of your decorations, gift wrappings, leftovers, and packaging can avoid the landfill completely when properly disposed of. Keeping Barrie as green as can be is a priority not only during the holidays, but all year long. Just by recycling, using your green bin, and reusing materials accordingly, we can extend the life of our landfill, which will create a more sustainable community for us all. To help you sort it all out, the City of Barrie has put together this quick guide to help you properly dispose of, recycle and reuse the holiday excess waste. Excess Food & Leftovers Excess food is a trademark of the Holiday season, easily filling garbage cans with food waste, leftovers, paper plates and paper napkins. Let’s avoid filling up the garbage and the landfill by throwing those scraps into the Green (organics) Bin and divert that waste from the landfill. You’d be surprised how little garbage you create, if you use the Green Bin accordingly. Used Wrapping Paper & Packaging Check the recycling content of your wrapping paper and greeting cards especially before purchasing so you can use the most environmentally friendly option. Avoid excessive amounts of tape and if possible, stay away from metallic wrapping paper and cards as they are not recyclable in Barrie’s curbside recycling program. When unwrapping gifts this season, set aside a box for reusable items such as ribbons, bows, tissue and wrapping paper in good condition, as well as holiday cards for gift tags the following year. Likewise, have the recycling box ready for recyclable wrapping papers that can’t be reused next year. Keep in mind that you can also use these to wrap up organics, as long as it is not foil. Electronics & Batteries Make sure to recycle your old electronics; take a trip to Barrie’s Environmental Centre (at the Barrie Landfill, 272 Ferndale Drive North) for free electronics dropoff. If you need batteries, try picking up some rechargeable ones (and a charger) that will save you money in the future and reduce waste. If you have old batteries to dispose of, do not throw them in the garbage. Take them to the City's Household Hazardous Waste Depot, open Saturdays 9am–4pm, at the landfill. The depot is free to Barrie and Simcoe County residents. Christmas Trees - Natural & Artificial One of the most common and most adored decorations of all is the Christmas tree. While many of us have opted for the artificial ones, some prefer the traditional fresh spruce. If you are going natural, why not enjoy the tree even after the festivities are over? Get a potted one and plant it in the backyard after the Holidays. Talk about reusable! For those who decide to dispose of their natural tree, Barrie provides a weekly curbside Christmas tree collection during the month of January. Alternatively, you can take it directly to the Landfill for composting. Regardless of how you dispose of your tree, please remember to remove all decorations and do not put the tree in a plastic bag, nor place it on a snowbank for pickup. Curbside collection Christmas trees must not exceed 1.8m or 6ft in length. If you want to dispose of an artificial tree, consider donating it to a local charity for reuse. Or, if it is not in good condition, take it to the landfill. January Garbage Collection Changes Starting January 12, 2015, Barrie households will receive two-bag/can garbage pickup every other week, instead of the current one-bag/can per week. Unlimited organics (green bin) & recycling will continue to be picked up weekly. In preparation, the City encourages you to rethink how you handle waste. Check the 2015 Community Calendar for your collection schedule and tips on how you can reduce waste and rely more on recycling and organics programs instead. barrie.ca/CommunityCalendar Time to Rethink Holiday Waste DOWNTOWN COUNTDOWN City Hall – Mulcaster & Collier Streets December 31, 2014 7:00pm –12:15am The City of Barrie is proud to present the 17th annual Downtown Countdown. This free app provides residents with real-time access to curbside collection schedules, road closures, events and much more, directly through their mobile devices. Visit www.barrie.ca/pingstreet to download from BlackBerry World, Google Play, iTunes, or Windows Store.

You may be wondering what exactly a Winter Maintenance Event is? Well, it’s not a special celebration, but rather the City’s function of cleaning and keeping our streets safe from pre and post winter flash storms.

Residents are reminded that from December 1 to March 31 each year, parking of a vehicle on any street or part of a street within the City of Barrie between the hours of 12 midnight and 7 a.m. is prohibited and subject to a $30.00 fine ($20.00 early payment).

Within the Downtown Business Improvement Area, on-street parking is prohibited between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Notwithstanding these provisions, the City of Barrie can at anytime declare a “winter maintenance event.” Notice of such declaration will be communicated through the media and parking will be prohibited as specified in the Notice.

Any vehicle found parked in contravention of By-law 2007-209 may be ticketed and/or towed.

By keeping the City streets clear of vehicles during this period, you allow the City crews access to help ensure that your roadways are maintained and that large emergency vehicles can get down the street. The City will be out ensuring that anyone violating these regulations may be subject to a fine or other action.

The City of Barrie greatly appreciates your cooperation in helping to keep the City streets clean and safe during the winter season. For more information on Winter Maintenance Events or Winter Control, please visit barrie.ca/WinterControl.
