Here is what is in store for you and your family this fall: New Easy Format: This year, we designed the Guide to be less cluttered and easier to read. Give us your feedback on what you think. You can email us at [email protected] or fill out a comment card at one of our recreation centres. Greater Swimming Programs: Now is the time to make sure the whole family learns to be comfortable and safe in the water. We are offering an extensive list of learning to swim programs from private to group lessons. Make a great choice for your family and enroll in swim lessons. Preschool Night Owls: As per parent requests, we now offer evening programs for preschoolers as a way for working parents to spend some quality time with their little ones. Preschool evening programs listed in the Guide are marked with an owl. Adult General Interests Amplified: This Fall’s adult program includes a variety of mainstream interests such as crafts, computers, music, decorating, learning a new language to more unique courses like, Sushi Made Easy, Geo Adventures, Rock Climbing, Meditation, Massage, Qigong, many types of Yoga and more. Adult Fitness Expanded: Our Open fitness classes are also expanding their repertoire with Open Air and Family Fitness classes. Also new is Triathlon Trainings and walking programs. Twisted but Fun Adult Sports: Following in the success of our Adult Dodgeball League, our Sports section is adding a new Inner Tube Waterpolo League to expand its list of fun games anyone can play successfully. Youth General Interest In High Demand: Our Children’s section of general interest programs have really expanded due to demand. This fall we will be offering Improv Olympics, Mixed Media for Kids, Fiddlin’ Around, Printmaking, Sculpture, Lego Creations, Eco Friendly Plans, and Yoga for kids, to name a few. Youth Sports In High Gear: For the first time this Fall, we introduce a new Sport Pass for youth ages 11 – 18 yrs. This pass costs only $80 and gives unlimited access to our gymnasiums during our afterschool gym times. Whether the kids are interested in basketball, volleyball, or any other sport, the Sport Pass is a great way to keep active. New registered programs being offered for youths include learning the sports of curling and table tennis. Long Duration Programs: Most general interest programs run for eight weeks starting the last week of September, giving you lots of time to learn, to socialize and to have fun. Free Sampling: Be Active Barrie on Sunday September 12th is a free family event where the City of Barrie Recreation programs and many community groups offer free programs throughout the day for families to sample. Real Easy Registration: Registration starts on August 23rd for our 55+ programs, August 24th for general interest and fitness programs and August 31st for Aquatics programs. Barrie is seeking to build on the information acquired from their Market Research Study, Created in Barrie, to develop a plan for marketing Barrie arts and culture products. The plan will serve as a guide for the creation of a marketing framework. This marketing framework will articulate strategies that will maximize the potential for arts that are produced in Barrie. The plan will serve as a cohesive document for guiding the marketing strategies of the Department of Culture, Tourism Barrie, other City Departments and Barrie arts and culture producers. The marketing plan will work in tandem with all of the existing strategic plans such as the Downtown Commercial Master Plan and the Building A Creative Future, A Plan for Culture. We use games and exercises to help you learn to master the mouse in this fun and low pressure hands-on workshop. The City of Barrie Seniors Outreach Day Program has current openings for volunteer positions at the Parkview 55+ Centre located at 189 Blake Street in Barrie. Drivers are needed to assist with transporting participants to and from this program on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from September 2010 to June 2011. Drivers can volunteer once a month or twice a month or act as occasional spares. Volunteers must provide a Police Records Check at no cost to them and proof of insurance. Volunteer Opportunities TAX DEFERRAL PROGRAM REMINDER Applications for the City of Barrie Tax Deferral Program for 2010 are currently being accepted and will be accepted until August 31, 2010. Please note that a new application must be completed each year to confirm eligibility for the Program. The Tax Deferral Program is available to any property owner aged 65 or older and any individual who is currently receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program. Eligible property owners will have their property taxes “frozen” at their base year amount (the year prior to the application.) For example if applying in 2010, the base year taxes are the amount paid in 2009. The tax deferrals are interest free, however, they must be re-paid when the property is sold. CONSTRUCTION OF THE CITY OF BARRIE LANDFILL GAS COLLECTION

SYSTEM & ABSTRACTION PLANT

The City of Barrie is seeking qualified bidders for the Barrie Landfill Gas Collection System and Abstraction Plant construction work. The deliverables shall include vertical gas well construction, header and lateral collection pipe installation and landfill gas abstraction plant construction at the Barrie Landfill for the City of Barrie.

The City of Barrie’s Curbside Recycling Program does NOT accept plastic bags or film wrap (for example the plastic that is wrapped around meat products). For more information regarding our curbside collection programs please refer to the 2010 Community Information and Waste Reduction Calendar or visit www.barrie.ca.

The City of Barrie’s Curbside Collection of leaf and yard waste occurs every other week during the months of July and August. Please refer to the 2010 Community Information and Waste Reduction Calendar or visit www.barrie.ca to determine which week your collection occurs. These collection areas are identified as Week A or Week B.

The City of Barrie Seniors Outreach Day Program has current openings for volunteer positions at the Parkview 55+ Centre located at 189 Blake Street in

Barrie. Drivers are needed to assist with transporting participants to and from this program on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from September

2010 to June 2011.

Drivers can volunteer once a month or twice a month or act as occasional spares. Volunteers must provide a Police Records Check at no cost to them

and proof of insurance.

TAX DEFERRAL PROGRAM REMINDER

Applications for the City of Barrie Tax Deferral Program for 2010 are currently being accepted and will be accepted until August 31, 2010. Please note that a new application must be completed each year to confirm eligibility for the Program. The Tax Deferral Program is available to any property owner aged 65 or older and any individual who is currently receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program. Eligible property owners will have their property taxes “frozen” at their base year amount (the year prior to the application.) For example if applying in 2010, the base year taxes are the amount paid in 2009. The tax deferrals are interest free, however, they must be re-paid when the property is sold.

The City of Barrie invites applications for Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) and Election Assistant (EA) contract positions to work in the 2010 Municipal Election. The successful applicants will be required to work the following hours:

Extended Hours of Operation

To ensure a portion of the Landfill liner isinstalled prior to winter weather conditions,

the City of Barrie will be revising Landfill reclamation operations to 24 hours a day from

Sunday, August 8th to Sunday, August 29th, 2010. Waste will only be accepted at the Landfill from

Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
