In return, you can give local artists the recognition they deserve. As a fellow art lover, supporter to artists, or anyone who appreciates the benefits art brings to our City, you have another week to nominate those who have demonstrated excellence in the arts and made a special contribution to Barrie’s vibrant arts community, for a 2010 Barrie Arts Award. For the past three years, Barrie has been holding the annual Arts Awards, a stellar event that celebrates the arts, recognizes local talent, and gives artists their deserved recognition – a key recommendation of the City’s Cultural Plan Building a Creative Future. “This year’s celebration will focus on Barrie’s youth with a new award for the most promising in our community. We are hoping that the schools will become involved and teachers will nominate students that demonstrate potential in the arts. We are also looking forward to announcing Barrie’s first Poet Laureate,” says Barrie’s Department of Culture Officer Onalee Groves. “Don’t forget there will be lots of delicious appetizers and some dynamic performances from local entertainers.” Winning an award opens many doors for an artist. It increases their profile, helps them to leverage funding from other levels of government, and gives them credibility amongst their peers. Artists in various mediums can be nominated, including those in the visual arts, the performing arts, the literary arts, and even those who help create art from a higher level such as performers, producers, and directors. Also, someone who has begun to develop a body of work in pursuing a professional artistic career can be nominated in the Emerging Artist category. This year’s categories have been refined to include: Excellence in Arts Category for the established professional artist (living or deceased) who has demonstrated creative originality, professional maturity and artistic leadership; Emerging Artist Category for those beginning a professional career in the arts; Community Contribution Category for the individual who has played a significant role in developing the arts in Barrie; Most Promising Youth Category for an artist younger than 19 and currently enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution. Collaboration Award Category for two or more individuals or organizations that have worked together to combine two distinctive art forms or collaborate on a specific project in an effort to build capacity in the arts. • The new Poet Laureate Category where the recipient will act as Barrie’s literary ambassador and enhance all civic and community events with their prose. While this year’s 2010 Barrie Arts Awards event will take place on November 18th at the Southshore Centre, you only have till Friday October 22nd to prepare and submit nomination forms.
