Тили-тили тесто! Счастливая сказка – Зо-лушка вышла замуж за принца. Кейт Миддлтон и принц Уильям обвенча-лись. За свадьбой следили миллионы людей по всему земному шару. О свадебном платье невесты, теперь уже принцессы Кейт Мид-длтон, написано и сказано много. Волшебный наряд от Александра Маккуина, искусно соединивший в себе классику и современ-ность, уже занесли в анна-лы свадебной моды.

Модные критики в один голос отметили и великолепное белое платье Пиппы Миддлтон – сестры Кейт. На этом, собственно гово-ря, монополия белого и закончи-лась: королевская свадьба сияла и радовала глаз своим много-цветьем.

Британские аристократки, не сговариваясь, выбрали для своих нарядов самые яркие и сочные оттенки: даже 85-летняя королева Елизавета II в этот день появилась в элегантном пальто солнечно-желтого цвета.

Стремясь выделиться из толпы гостей, дамы заготовили для это-го дня наряды самых вычурных и неожиданных фасонов, увенчав

это буйство дизайнерской фанта-зии многоярусными шляпками.

В погоне за оригинальностью для многих этот модный марафон закончился полным фиаско. Так, например, и случилось с Отэм Келли – супругой двоюродного брата принца Уильяма. Мод-ные критики наряд не оценили: платье-пальто сшитое из черес-чур тяжёлой ткани, добавляло Отэм лишнего объема и добрый десяток лет.

Как ни странно, главное свет-ское событие года окончилось полной неудачей и для иконы стиля Виктории Бекхэм. И дело здесь вовсе не в «интересном» положении Вики, а в ее странном наряде: миссис Бекхэм наряди-лась в платье собственной мар-ки, которое больше подошло бы для похорон, чем для свадьбы. Супруг Виктории Дэвид тоже не избежал конфуза. В Вестминстер-ское аббатство футболист явился с рыцарским орденом на правой стороне груди, хотя, как выясни-лось, носят его исключительно на левой. Жена спикера палаты общин Салли Беркоу продемонстриро-вала сомнительной красоты кру-жевное платье, слишком щедро расписанное графическим рисун-ком. Ее наряд общепризнанно был назван слишком откро-венным и открытым для такого консервативного мероприятия, как королевская свадьба.

Британская актриса, журна-листка и модель Тара Палмер-Томкинсон попыталась привлечь к себе внимание при помощи ярко-синего цвета. Платье модный экзамен прошло, а вот шляпка-лодочка все от того же экстравагантного Филиппа Трей-си – нет.

Наряд Мириам Клегг напоми-нал скорее костюм персонажа мюзикла «Зорро» или костюм для корриды, чем платье супруги по-литика. Светскую львицу подвели легкомысленный горошек на платье и алый цветок в волосах.

– Люди во всем мире следят за нарисованным вами котом, все его знают. Но мало кто знает вас. Не обидно? Вам не кажется, что Simon’s Cat публике интереснее, чем вы сами?

– А я не против, если люди будут больше интересоваться моим ко-том, а не мной. В конце концов, это здорово, что так много людей оце-нили мою работу. Этого достаточно, и я не уверен, что мне еще нужно побеспокоиться о какой-то там лич-ной славе.

Вообще, мне просто повезло. Так получилось, что я придумал Simon’s Cat в эпоху Интернета. Сеть позво-ляет совершенно разным (и ча-сто незнакомым) людям делиться чем-то друг с другом. Отчасти имен-но это помогло моему коту стать та-ким популярным – пользователи рассылали ссылки в письмах и че-рез социальные сети (ну вы зна-

ете, как это делается). Десять лет назад такого не могло случиться – тогда ведь не было YouTube или Facebook.

Про мультфильмы, которые вы-кладываются в Интернет, все по-нятно. Но есть еще, например, кни-ги про Simon’s Cat – они изданы более чем в 20 странах, общий их тираж превысил полмиллиона эк-земпляров.

– Меня не покидает ощущение, что ваш рисованный кот за что-то мстит своему хозяину.

– Ну, Simon’s Cat ничего не де-лает из злобы – он просто озорной и игривый, как и большинство ко-шек. А хаос, который он привносит в жизнь, – это просто случайность, он не специально.

– Если бы кто-то из ваших котов решил нарисовать своего хозяи-на, то есть вас, как бы он это сде-лал?

– Ха! Думаю, он бы нарисовал меня в виде большого консервно-го ножа.

Саймон и его котыМиллионы просмотров в Сети, календари, прин-ты на майки – мультфильм Simon’s Cat и его автор Сай-мон Тофилд обрели мировую славу. Будущий художник-мультипликатор Саймон То-филд начал рисовать еще в детстве. Но с главной те-мой своего творчества (жи-вотные) он определил-ся позднее – в британском De Montfort University. Те-перь Саймон создает зве-рей на лондонской студии TandemFilms, работы кото-рой получили множество призов разнообразных авто-ритетных кинофестивалей.

Короче говоря, жизнь художника шла своим чередом, пока Саймон не нарисовал первый мультфильм из будущей серии Simon’sCat – Cat Man Do. «Я просто хотел освоить Flash, – рассказывал потом Тофилд. – В то утро Хью, который тогда был еще котенком, прыгал вокруг меня и требовал свой завтрак. И, в об-щем, мне не понадобилось мно-го времени, чтобы обрести вдохно-вение...»

Мультик сразу получил приз как лучший комический фильм на BritishAnimationAwards 2008. И по-неслось – сейчас та, первая серия собрала уже более 20 млн. просмо-тров в Сети, а ее герой, наглый и постоянно голодный кот, по попу-лярности обогнал многих реальных

интернет-персонажей и не собира-ется сдавать позиций: мультфильмы Simon’s Cat появляются с завидной регулярностью.

Мистер Тофилд позволил себе от-влечься от котов, которые, как ока-залось, составляют существенную часть его жизни, чтобы ответить на несколько вопросов.

– Я хочу спросить вас о чем-то немного странном – вы когда-нибудь слышали о Юрии Куклаче-ве? Это такой известный россий-ский дрессировщик, который ра-ботает с кошками.

– Да, и не только слышал – я не-сколько раз видел отрывки его шоу в Интернете.

– Значит, вы знаете, что ему каким-то непостижимым обра-зом удается дрессировать кошек. Хотя многие считают, что это не-возможно. Что вы думаете об этом?

– Если честно, я немного беспо-коюсь, когда размышляю над тем, какими именно методами Юрий Куклачев пользуется в процессе дрессировки. Дело в том, что любой человек, который когда-либо жил в одном помещении с кошкой, очень хорошо знает, что эти животные об-ладают сильным и очень свободо-любивым характером. Говоря коро-че, они любят, чтобы все было так, как они хотят, им нравится ощу-щать себя хозяевами ситуации. Именно поэтому, думаю, многие уверены, что научить кошку каким-то трюкам, приручить ее – это не-вероятно.

– Судя по Simon’s Cat, вам это как раз не удается...

– У нас говорят: «У кошек нет хо-зяев, только слуги» (Cats don’t have masters. They have servants).

– И все-таки вы как-то с ними справляетесь – у вас же их три?

– О, вы отстали от жизни, сейчас у меня их уже четыре: Хью, Мэй-си, Джесс и Тедди. Прототипом для фильма Cat Man Do, первого из се-рии Simon’s Cat, был Хью, именно с него все началось. Еще есть Тед-ди – самый молодой. Дальше идет Мэйси – это огромная кошка, и ап-петит у нее соответствующий (как у снежного барса). Ну и еще Джесс – старейшина среди них, и он боль-ше всех любит сидеть на коленях. В

общем, как-то справляемся.

– Ну и кто хозяин в вашем доме? Какова иерархия?

– Признаюсь честно: кошки, без-условно, входят в высшее руковод-ство. Именно они составляют мой ежедневный график. Когда вста-вать, когда пришло время поесть, когда надо ложиться спать – все ре-шают они. Но главный босс – Мэй-си, остальные выказывают ей не-скрываемое уважение. Потом Хью, Тедди и в самом конце – Джесс.

– Зачем так много животных? Вам одиноко?

– Не уверен, что это всегда при-знак одиночества. Хотя, конечно, некоторые люди воспринимают

своих питомцев в качестве компа-ньонов, без которых они чувствуют себя очень одиноко. Но есть и дру-гие! Вот, например, ребенок при-нес с прогулки кошку – вряд ли он в этот момент думал об одиночестве. Скорее всего, малыша просто при-влекает идея заботы о каком-то жи-вом существе, более слабом, более уязвимом. Что же касается меня, то я воспринимаю своих кошек как отличную компанию – они ласко-вые и часто заставляют меня сме-яться. Думаю, это заметно по при-ключениям Simon’s Cat.

– Почему вы выбрали такую про-стую технику рисунка?

– В моих рисунках и мультфиль-мах важно не то, как хорошо вы-

Ах, Герцогиня! Герцогиня!

Вот и все, длинный и торже-ственный свадебный день подо-шел к концу.

Признаюсь честно, за все во-семь лет, что я в Лондоне, я не припомню праздника с такой бла-гостной и объединяющей всех ат-мосферой, как королевская свадь-ба. Британцы не любят кичить-ся общенациональным патриотиз-мом, флаги почти никогда не выве-шивают, но тут было все абсолют-но по-другому.

О подробностях самой свадьбы, которая стала концом сказочной повести и одновременно началом длинного семейного романа (наде-юсь, что не драмы и не трагедии), рассказывать не буду.

Самым красивым впечатлени-ем дня для многих стало внутрен-нее убранство Вестминстерского аббатства, которое олицетворяло природу, весну и обновление:

Самые курьезные моменты – это как кольцо никак не хотело на-лезать на палец невесты, и Уильям буквально силой протолкнул его на место; как все увидели синий плед королевы, которым она укрывала ноги в машине; и как все фотогра-фии свадебного поцелуя молодо-женов оттенила зажавшая уши от шума девочка из числа подружек невесты:

Самыми неудачными прогноза-ми оказались пророчества и до-мыслы по поводу дождливой пого-ды, Владимирской тиары (или «Рус-ского венца») для невесты и бес-порядков в Лондоне в день свадь-бы. Все оказалось, к счастью, по-другому, и я очень рад, что в этих вопросах мы интуитивно ока-зались правы, а конкуренты попа-ли впросак.

Что же дальше?Относительно медового месяца

ситуация пока неясна, будем ждать новостей и официальных объяв-лений.

По поводу церемониальных обя-занностей новоиспеченной герцо-гини Кембриджской королевский двор пока отделался очень общей фразой о том, что она будет помо-гать мужу и королеве в их церемо-ниальных обязанностях, а в июле состоится первый зарубежный ви-зит супругов – в Канаду.

На самом деле стремительно приближающаяся к 30-летию Кэ-трин, скорее всего, сосредоточит-ся на планах прибавления семей-

ства. Если все пойдет удачно, то в Олимпийском 2012 году у короле-вы Елизаветы появится еще один правнук – подарок к «бриллианто-вому» юбилею ее нахождения на престоле. Попутно будущая мама сможет, скажем, разработать ли-нию детской одежды, которая, без сомнения, будет пользоваться по-пулярностью.

В британском обществе уже за-вязалась дискуссия о необходи-мости осовременить Закон о пре-столонаследии 1772 года. Принци-пы равенства полов и желание из-бежать королевских драм диктуют необходимость пересмотра пра-вила наследования престола толь-ко по мужской линии. Вполне воз-можно, что к моменту рождения первенца Уильяма и Кейт он или она автоматически станут наслед-ником престола. Так было сделано 30 лет назад в Швеции, чтобы пер-вая дочь короля и королевы ста-ла крон-принцессой, и так не было сделано в Японии, где теперь за закрытыми дверями император-ских дворцов страдают от невоз-можности произвести наследника мужского пола и неясных перспек-тив наследования трона принцес-са Масако, принц Нарухито и ма-ленькая принцесса Айко. Хочется, чтобы Британия все-таки пошла по пути Швеции, а не Японии в этом вопросе...

А сами Уильям и Кейт, которые до сего момента очень успешно держались максимально в тени славы, с лихвой выполнили норму публичных обязанностей на этот год. Наверняка им больше всего хочется уединиться и жить спокой-ной жизнью, именно поэтому они вскоре переезжают на ферму на уэльском острове Англси под бла-говидным предлогом службы Уи-льяма. Еще год-два они могут потя-нуть время и не мелькать ежеднев-но на экранах ТВ и быть замешан-ными в пересудах и скандалах. Ну а потом – посмотрим, может, и во-йдут во вкус герцогской жизни. Стоит ведь только начать...

Что такое занимательная экология от Audi? Силуэт эф-фектного суперкара, раз-гон до сотни быстрее пяти секунд и полное отсутствие выхлопных газов. И это не фантастика. «Электриков» уже вызвали, они придут со дня на день.

«Ты – следующий!» – палец двухме-трового верзилы, не колеблясь, указал на меня, и я сразу понял – спорить и уж тем более сопротивляться беспо-лезно. Кто-то похлопал меня по плечу, мол, мужайся, парень. Ничего не оста-ется. Собрав остатки решительности, я сделал шаг вперед. Огромная, в три человеческих роста дверь гулко лязг-нула за моей спиной, и по спине про-бежал холодок.

Я стою в пустом ангаре с металли-ческими стенами. Откуда-то сверху в помещение просачивается рассе-янный свет. Вокруг ни души. Вдруг откуда-то появляется энергичный и на-тянуто улыбающийся немец. «Пожа-луйста, присаживайтесь!» Я не спорю. С трудом втискиваюсь в кресло, не-знакомец клацает замком привязных ремней – не пошевелиться. И тут до моего слуха доносится зловещий ха-рактерный не то гул, не то присвист электрического тока. На мгновение мне чудится, что я не в салоне авто-мобиля, а накрепко пристегнут к спин-ке электрического стула, а продолжаю-щий не к месту улыбаться немец, про-верив электроды, уже схватился за ручку трансформатора...

Но прочь дурные мысли. Ухватив-шись покрепче за руль, я что есть силы наступаю на педаль акселера-тора, и электрический Audi R8 e-tron срывается с места с решительностью гоночного троллейбуса. Я загодя гото-вился к этой встрече и потому хорошо знал, что уникальный автомобиль раз-гоняется до сотни за 4,8 секунды. Но даже эти очень, надо сказать, достав-ляющие цифры, равно как и спортив-ный антураж кокпита, не в силах срав-ниться с удивительной и непривыч-ной тишиной, сопровождающей вжи-мающее в кресло ускорение. Сочного рыка многоцилиндрового мотора нет, отсутствует как класс и свирепый рев выхлопной системы, вместо них до уха доносится лишь равномерный транс-форматорный гул электрической сило-вой установки. Самый страшный кош-мар смертника на электрическом сту-ле, ожидающего встречи с создате-

лем, в обработке Audi превратился в агрегат для массового выброса адре-налина и... отраду для всех апологетов Гринписа.

Еще недавно казалось, что Европа проиграла экологическую войну япон-цам. Пока Toyota и Honda наперебой представляли на суд общественно-сти новые и новые гибридные техно-логии, бренды родом из старушки Ев-ропы вели себя слишком безучастно. Да, скажем, BMW одно время весь-ма активно инвестировала в разра-ботку водородных автомобилей, но за-тем на программе поставили жирный крест. В свою очередь Mercedes-Benz будто для галочки разработал для по-следнего поколения S-class вариант с упрощенной гибридной силовой уста-новкой – даже Prius куда технологич-нее этой поделки на скорую руку. В то же время Volkswagen и Audi ограни-чивались лишь «зелеными» концепт-карами. Со стороны казалось, что немцев просто не интересует эта ги-бридная возня. Но все оказалось со-вершенно иначе.

Уже весной 2011 года в продаже появится кроссовер Audi Q5 Hybrid quattro – самый спортивный и дина-мичный в своем классе. Но это только цветочки. Настоящий сюрприз поклон-ников марки ждет в 2012 году – тогда стартуют продажи серийного суперэ-лектрокара R8 e-tron.

Даже коротенькая поездка на этой машине способна поколебать веру са-мого убежденного и твердолобого про-тивника электрокаров. В самом деле, ведь R8 e-tron дарит совершенно но-вый уровень мироощущения. Одно дело, когда ты едешь на гибридном хетчбэке, оправдывая его сомнитель- ную внешность, унылую динамику и

высокую цену незначительно пони-женным уровнем двуокиси углерода в выхлопе, и совсем другой коленкор, когда мчишься за 200 км/ч на маши-не, у которой выхлопная труба отсут-ствует как класс! Нереально!

Еще сложнее поверить в то, что R8 e-tron к тому же и вполне практич-ная машина. Благодаря целому ар-сеналу литий-ионных аккумуляторов массой 550 кг и общей емкостью 53 кВт/ч дальность хода составляет впол-не разумные 220-250 км. При этом «заправлять» машину можно от обыч-ной 220-230-вольтовой розетки за 6-8

часов или от источника повышенно-го тока, сокращающего заправку «до полного бака» в 2-3 раза. Учитывая, что среднестатистический автомобиль, согласно исследованиям, находится без движения 20 часов в течение каж-дых суток, проблема разряженных ак-кумуляторов не кажется неизбежной.

Причем R8 e-tron – это только пер-вый шаг по дороге электрификации, которая в перспективе затронет все модели «четырех колец». Сами немцы называют концепцию развития элек-тромобилей Audi «нисходящей»: сна-чала новые и недешевые технологии обкатываются на дорогих машинах,

и уже затем они становятся доступны для моделей из более демократично-го ценового сегмента. Так, уже в 2014 году на рынок должен выйти хетчбэк Audi A1 e-tron с электромотором и так называемым рейндж-экстендером – роторным двигателем, который посто-янно подзаряжает аккумуляторы и тем самым увеличивает запас хода при минимальном расходе топлива.

Дальнейшие перспективы поисти-не безграничны. В Audi не берутся утверждать, что электромобили, став-шие приоритетным направлением для компании, в итоге окажутся победи-телями экологической гонки вооруже-ний. Сейчас в автомобилестроении идет своеобразная «война форматов», которую недавно можно было наблю-дать на рынке носителей информа-ции. За роль самой главной экологиче-ской разработки помимо «электриков» бьются и технологии чистого дизеля, и гибриды, и машины на топливных эле-ментах. Кто победит – покажет время. В Ингольштадте будут готовы к любому развитию ситуации. Ведь разработкой машин на топливных элементах зани-мается Volkswagen, так что в случае чего победивший формат (читай сило-вой агрегат) можно устанавливать на любые машины концерна.

«Четыре кольца» к 2020 году намерены стать самым экологическим брендом среди премиум-марок

Скорость и электромобили подружились еще в XIX веке. Самый первый официально зарегистрированный рекорд скорости приписывают фран-цузскому графу Гастону де Шасселу-Лоба, который 18 декабря 1898 года на электромобиле Jeantaud развил скорость 63,15 км/ч. Машине с элек-тромотором принадлежит и другое знаменательное достижение: Камиль Женацци первым в истории превысил барьер в 100 км/ч. Прозванный «Рыжим дьяволом» за характерный цвет бородки, бельгиец выступал на электромобиле «Всегда недовольная» с необычным сигарообразным ку-зовом и двумя электромоторами суммарной мощностью 68 л. с. Свой третий и последний рекорд Камиль установил 29 апреля 1899 года, до-стигнув скорости 105,9 км/ч.

Мачу-Пикчу находится вы-соко в Андах и окружен просто ошеломляющим пейзажем. Считается, что город был построен в се-редине XV века, а в первой половине XVI по неизвест-ной причине жители поки-нули его.

В свое время, когда испанцы вторглись на территорию инков, они не нашли Мачу-Пикчу. Вероятно, по-тому что к их приходу город уже был заброшен. Более того, двигаясь по долине соседней реки Урубамба, испанцы не могли видеть город, на-ходящийся на высоте и скрытый гу-стой зеленью гор. Благодаря этим обстоятельствам город остался це-лым и невредимым и был обнару-жен только в начале XX века амери-канским исследователем. Остается только догадываться о происхожде-нии и предназначении Мачу-Пикчу – был ли он просто поселением, либо религиозным или астрономи-ческим центром, либо резиденцией тогдашнего правителя инков Пача-кутека. Так или иначе, это необыч-ное место заслуживает внимания любого любителя путешествий – и тем более того, кто едет в Перу.

Город представляет собой ком-плекс из более чем двухсот зда-ний – домов, храмов, дворцовых построек и даже тюрьмы. Большин-

ство из них сложены из хорошо об-работанных плотно пригнанных друг к другу плит. Мачу-Пикчу разделен на три части. В одной была резиден-ция короля и богатых лидеров, дру-гая – священная площадь с храма-ми, которая отделяла квартал дво-рянства от третьей его части – ма-стерских и домов крестьян. На скло-нах горы расположены сельскохо-зяйственные террасы, оснащенные, нужно отметить, действующими и сегодня акведуками. В городе и не-подалеку найдены каменные карье-ры, где инки добывали строитель-ные материалы (здесь же размеща-лись и хижины мастеров), полураз-рушенные мосты, руины домов и древние дороги.

Необычные храмы и постройки Мачу-Пикчу говорят о том, что горо-жане совершали ритуалы с жертво-приношениями и проводили астро-номические наблюдения. Напри-мер, на самой высокой точке Ин-

тиуатан находится ритуальный ка-мень, напоминающий солнечные часы. Возможно, с его помощью жрецы определяли время суток и вели календарь. Известно, что ка-мень играл особую роль в церемо-нии «привязывания солнца». Риту-ал с жертвоприношениями прово-дился для того, чтобы солнце верну-лось в город на следующий год. Или, например, храм Кондора, в кото-ром находится камень с очертания-ми птичьей головы и клюва-желоба,

предназначенного, скорее всего, для стока крови. Или возведенный на скале круглый храм Солнца, по-хожий на астрономическую обсер-ваторию, внутри которого находится камень, также похожий на жертвен-ный алтарь. На его поверхности в день летнего солнцестояния, на вос-ходе, появляется полоса света.

Мачу-Пикчу расположен на вер-шине хребта, рядом с двумя высо-кими пиками, на меньший из кото-рых (Уайна-Пикчу) можно поднять-ся. С него открывается прекрас-ный вид на древний город. Из-за высокого уровня осадков (большую часть года здесь идут дожди) горы буквально купаются в облаках. Что-бы увидеть Мачу-Пикчу в ясную по-году и иметь возможность сделать хорошие фотоснимки, нужно ехать сюда в период с апреля по октябрь. Дожди хоть и не прекращаются, но есть шанс застать ясную погоду.

В Мачу-Пикчу огромный наплыв туристов круглый год, но самый пик приходится на сухой сезон – с июня по август. Если хотите увидеть город без «многочисленных пришельцев»

и не боитесь физических нагрузок, можно отправиться в двух-, четы-рех-, пяти- или семидневный поход по тропе инков (Инка-трейл) – соот-ветственно с корректировкой пути. Ведет тропа через красивые пейза-

жи и древние руины, а в город вы попадете ранним утром, до приезда толпы туристов. Заказывать поход нужно предварительно, а в пик се-зона – за пару месяцев (самостоя-тельные походы запрещены).

При входе в Мачу-Пикчу биле-ты купить нельзя! Большие сумки, как и профессиональную фото-технику (объектив более 200мм) приносить на территорию запре-щено, все это придется оставить при входе в камере хранения.

Город Мачу-Пикчу в 1911 году обнаружил американский про-фессор Хайрем Бингхем. Он же вывез в Америку из Мачу-Пикчу все исторические ценности.

По сути, Хайрем Бингем обма-нул правительство Перу. Он вы-бил для себя практически год для исследования города без вмешательства перуанцев и за это время вывез оттуда все мало-мальски ценное. С учетом того, что город не был разрушен испанцами, а был просто остав-лен его жителями по непонятным причинам, можно себе предста-вить, сколько всего было найде-но в развалинах. В настоящее время ведутся переговоры о воз-врате вывезенных ценностей, однако американцы выдвигают условие – перуанцы должны по-строить музей.

The first wave of privatization came in the form of a mass voucher scheme launched in late 1992 – just nine months after Yeltsin assumed the presidency. All Russians were to be offered vouchers to the value of 10,000 roubles (then worth about $30, the equivalent of the average monthly wage).

These could, over time, be exchanged for shares either in companies that employed them or in any other state enterprise that was being privatized. To acquire the vouchers, citizens had to pay a mere 25 roubles per voucher, at the time the equivalent of about 7 pence.

In the four months from October 1992, a remarkable 144 million vouchers were bought, mainly in agricultural and service firms. The Kremlin presented this ambitious scheme as offering everyone a share in the nation’s wealth. Yeltsin promised it would produce ‘millions of owners rather than a handful of millionaires’. It may have been a great vision but it never materialized. Russia’s citizens were poor, often unpaid, and many had lost their savings as inflation soared and the

rouble collapsed. Moreover, after seventy years of communism, most Russians had no concept of the idea of share ownership. There wasn’t even a Russian word for privatization.

There were, however, plenty of people who understood only too well what privatization meant and the value of the vouchers. They started buying them up in blocks from workers. Among those cashing in was Mikhail Khodorkovsky – who would later become the richest man in Russia. Street kiosks selling vodka and cigarettes began doing a brisk trade in vouchers. Stalls began to appear outside farms and factories offering to buy them from workers. Hustlers started going from door to door.

Even though holders were being offered far less than the vouchers were worth, most exchanged them for cash to pay for immediate necessities. Russia became a giant unregulated stock exchange as purchasers were persuaded to trade their vouchers for prices that were nearly always well below their true value. They would exchange them for a bottle of vodka, a handful of US dollars, or a few more roubles than they had paid for them. It proved a mass bonanza for those prepared to prey on a country suffering from mass deprivation.

Hundreds of thousands also lost their vouchers in ‘voucher saving funds’. Some funds were little more than covert attempts by companies

to buy up their own shares for a song. Members of the old KGB power elite often laid claim to mines and enterprises in what became known as ‘smash-and-grab’ operations. For a nation ignorant of the concept of shares and unable to appreciate the potential value of their vouchers, people were easily encouraged to part with their stakes. For the winners it was easy and big money.

Instead of a share-owning democracy, a newspaper poll in July 1994 revealed that only 8 per cent of Russians had exchanged their vouchers for shares in enterprises in which they worked. Moreover, because the assets being sold were massively undervalued, the successful purchasers obtained the companies for well below their real value. Indeed, the 144 million vouchers issued have been estimated to have valued the assets at a mere $12 billion. In other words, much of the country’s industrial and agricultural wealth was being sold for a sum equivalent to the value of a single British company such as Marks & Spencer.

In just two years, by the beginning of 1995, around half the economy, mostly in the shape of small- and medium-sized businesses, had been privatized. The next crucial issue in the ‘second Russian Revolution’ was how to privatize the remaining giant state-owned oil, metallurgical, and telecommunications industries. These were still operated by former Soviet managers – the ‘red directors’, the Soviet-era bosses renowned for their corruption and incompetence who had managed the state firms – many of whom were laundering money and stashing away revenue abroad. Russia was still mired in a severe economic

crisis with plunging share prices and rampant inflation. The indecisive and capricious Yeltsin was ill, often drunk and rarely in control, while the state was running out of money to pay

pensions and salaries. Taking advantage of the growing

crisis, a handful of businessmen dreamed up a clever ruse that appeared to offer a solution. This was a group that had already become rich by taking advantage of the early days of Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika (restructuring), which, for the first time in the Soviet Union, allowed small private enterprises to operate. Led by a leading insider, Vladimir Potanin, the cabal offered Yeltsin a backroom deal known in the West as ‘loans for shares’. This was an arrangement (coming at the end of the voucher privatization scheme) whereby they would lend the government the cash it so desperately needed in return for the right to buy shares in the remaining state enterprises. In effect, Yeltsin was auctioning off the state’s most desirable assets. If the government subsequently defaulted on repaying the loans – which the scheme’s architects knew was inevitable – the lenders would keep the shares by way of compensation.

For Yeltsin, the plan provided much needed cash while on paper it did not look like the mass giveaway it turned out to be. Between 1995 and 1997, more than twenty giant state-owned enterprises, accounting for a huge share of the country’s national wealth, were offloaded in this way. In return, the government received a total of some 9.1 trillion roubles, about £1.2 billion at the time. One of the main beneficiaries of this deal was Boris Berezovsky.

Hanna is a movie about a 16 year old girl who has been trained by her father for her entire life to be a killing machine, she has been brought up in a Forest in Finland. Try to follow this; she is ready and is sent by her father to kill a woman who is the head of some ghostly bureau (not mentioned), for this she needs to press a button to begin the chase. When she’s done she is supposed to join her father in Berlin. She is captured, then escapes and realizes she’s in morocco, she then meets a friendly English family with whom she discovers life. Those are the first ten minutes of the movie to set the mood and the story. What was supposed to be a mix between the ‘Bourne’ movies and ‘Kickass’ turns out to be a mess.

Many questions rise up during the movie, but only about 60% are answered. Saoirse Ronan who plays Hanna portrayed the fearless natural born killer who discovers humane qualities to perfection, the transition is acted smoothly and naturally. The comic situations in the movie are tackled with taste and make the public smile and sometimes even laugh out loud. Eric Bana who figures as one of the main characters isn’t seen a lot. Cate Blanchett who plays the ruthless intelligence agent is frightening, and makes the audience feel almost uncomfortable from fear. With quite a bit of real situations in an other wise surreal movie Hanna’s only mistake is having too many useless details. Enjoy at the cinemas next to you as of Friday.

Method:Preheat the oven to its highest setting.Spread on a baking tray tossing it with oil, garlic and chilly peppers. Season with salt. Cook in the oven for about 10-15 minutes. Healthy Asparagus Soup Serves 4Hands On Time 30 minutesIngredients:25 g butter2 shallots, diced700g asparagus, chop the stems and reserve the tops850g fresh chicken stock

Method:Melt the butter in a pan.Add shallots and stems and cook on a medium heat for 5 minutes. Financial freedom is one the goals for all of us. Some of you might think that the road to financial stability and security is long and hard. What have you done so far to be closer to this freedom? Most people get scared when their hear words “personal finance”. We all want more money to be able to afford the things that we want. It’s time to start doing something to achieve financial stability here and now.

Reality check. It’s time to face the facts no matter how scary this first step may seem. Get your old bank statements, sit down and work out how much you owe and what your monthly payments are. This is the most important step most people fear. You have to know where you stand in order for you to start thinking where you want to be. You don’t have to do this alone. Just ask your relative or a friend to help you out.

Set financial goals as well as life goals. Define financial stability and security. Every single person has a different understanding of what financial freedom is. What does it mean to you? How will your life change once you are financially free? What will you have? Where will you travel? What will you spend your money on? Etc… don’t be afraid to dream, associate every word with a visual image. It’s important to attach emotions to every word you

say. Does it make you feel happy? If yes, then you are on the right track. If you are still not sure, then readjust your goals.

Stop emotional spending. For the next month do not spend money on treats for yourself. Start appreciating and being satisfied with what you already have. More spending will lead to more debt. There is absolutely no reason to get into more debt for a few happy moments after you buy something. Stop all the unnecessary spending, such as buying a cup of coffee every day before you go to work. Just think of it this way: “The difference between rich people and poor people is that poor people spend their money and save what’s left; rich people save their money and spend what’s left.” (Jim Rohn, motivational speaker).

Save all your receipts for a month and then figure out how many unnecessary payments you’ve made. Stop denying and start doing the right things for a financially stable future. Get rid of the idea that you need credit cards for emergency. If you think you do, then you will most definitely attract all sorts of emergencies into your life.

Start generating additional income. What talents have you got? What are you good at? Can you repair things or freelance? Do not be afraid of the odd jobs and start on a part-time basis. There are various part-time jobs available, just do some research and increase your income even by small amounts.

Change the way you spend. For

example, you can take vacation without travelling. Explore places nearby – hike, swim or play golf. Spend quality time with your friends and family to re-energise. Basically, live with less. Get rid of unnecessary things – sell them, give them to charity or whatever else that will make you feel free. Clear out some space for new things to come into your life.

Plan your budget in advance. Calculate how much you have to pay for your debt, how much will be left and what this surplus can be spend

on. Start spending wisely and stop saving. If you have saving, it’s better to pay off your debts faster. If you don’t know how or where to start, seek for a professional advice.

Be healthy, happy and wealthy…. and Remember: “When people use credit cards, they are often spending money they don’t have on things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like.”

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin threw down the gauntlet to the government during his annual report to the Duma at the end of April, calling for a doubling of labor productivity over the next decade.

If the Russian government can pull off this trick, then it would double the size of the economy at almost no cost. Russian productivity is a third of that

in the United States, but consulting group McKinsey found in a report last year that between 60 and 80 percent of the gap is due not to the weather or lack of power stations, but just bad management.

“Russia needs to become a genuinely competitive country. This is a basic requirement for its government, businesses and social institutions. If we look at labor

productivity, in Russia it is much lower than in leading economies,” Putin said. “At the very least, we have to double it over the next decade, perhaps even raising it three or fourfold in key industries.”

It is a long overdue policy priority. The OECD highlighted the low productive of emerging eastern markets as one of the main problems facing the governments in the region in a report this April.

«The capacity of fiscal and monetary policies to further support the recovery is pretty much exhausted, so a new emphasis on implementing structural reforms is the only way to boost growth and job creation,» said OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría at the presentation of the “Going for Growth” report.

In the past, the Kremlin has largely focused on the need to boost investment as the main policy theme to boost economic growth. But the switch to increasing productivity focuses efforts on a more fundamental economic goal. A study several years ago by Swedish economic institute CEFIR found that while investment into the state-owned gas monopolist Gazprom has been rising every year, the productivity of the company has been falling.

Putin’s remarks are drawn from

the Strategy 2020 report, which he commissioned and lays out his long-term economic blueprint.

The state has begun the process of improving the quality of management in Russia. The government has thrown its considerable resources into setting up the Skolkovo business school to train the next generation of Russian CEOs. The second plank of the program is to promote high tech and innovation. Putin said the share of innovative production in the country’s total production over the next decade will increase from 12 percent today to 25 or 35 percent.

In addition to increasing labor efficiency, the OECD recommends that BRICS governments work to increase overall productivity by relaxing highly stringent regulations in product markets, lowering barriers to trade and FDI, strengthening property rights and contract enforcement, and deepening financial markets.

The Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi continues to obtain image attributes. Russia has recently chosen the mascots for the Games - Barsik, Zaika and Mishka. Now critics target the concept of the general visual image of the Sochi Games.

The patchwork principle, suggested by Bosco designers, does not look convincing enough to attract the required amount of attention to one of the most important events of the decade. The image of the Games in Sochi, as designers believe, is supposed to remind the world of the diversity of cultures of the Russian people.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, the president of the Sochi-2014 Organization Committee delivered the speech about the significance of the upcoming Games during the presentation of the patchwork image for the event. The presentation took place at one of Moscow’s major luxury department stores, GUM. The patchwork represents most popular Russian ornaments. The organizers of the presentation said that the drawings would be used in the decoration of sports constructions, various

municipal objects, as well as in the production of souvenirs.

Unfortunately, the choice of the visualization of the sports competitions has not come as a surprise. The patchwork principle dominates everything that is related to the Olympic Games. It seems that those responsible for the PR part

of the business have decided to play the game to the maximum. If there’s a mascot needed, they give three at once; if there’s an ornament needed, they give 16 at once. Looks like some salad of symbols and color indeed.

As for the mascots, the souvenirs will most likely be popular. However, will anyone be able

to take so many ornaments? Even Russians will find it difficult to distinguish between Gzel and Hohloma, let alone foreigners. The Americans, the French, the Italians and other foreigners will run the risks of being splashed with colors and ornaments when they visit Sochi for the Games.

This project definitely matches the general conception of Bosco di Ciliegi, the official supplier of outfits for the Sochi Games. Well-known and eye-catching red-and-white outfits that the Russian athletes were sporting during previous major events, will also be restyled to match the patchwork project.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Winter Olympics in 2014 will take place under the strong influence of glamor, which is hated by many people in Russia. When young provincial Russian girls decide to conquer Moscow, they come to the capital covering their natural beauty under layers and layers of heavy makeup, bizarre-looking clothes and tons of cheap jewelry. It appears that the Sochi Games will look the same. Designers want Sochi to «wear» several different costumes of different eras, and they do not seem to care whether those styles can blend well.

Do the innovative Games need Gzel and Hohloma ornaments? Trying to impose our own uniqueness, we forget that people from other countries may find it very hard to understand. One may recollect the recent World Cup in South Africa. The African color in the country, particularly the African noise of thousands of vuvuzelas, has left a bad taste in the mouth for many people. Most likely, the authorities of Johannesburg never wanted their country to be associated with irritating noise. Which associations with the Sochi Games create for ofreigners?

China is trying to change its borders with Russia again. Chinese vessels and barges with excavators aboard were conducting dredging operations in the area of the 146th kilometer of the Ussuri River.

Lost deal of the centuryRussia has lost the largest arms tender of this century - the delivery of the medium multi-role combat aircraft for India. Russia was taking part in the tender with its MiG-35 fighter jet (a modernized version of MiG-29). The contract stipulated the delivery of 126 fighter jets in the amount of over $10 billion.

Now there are two rivals left, both of them are European companies: Rafale, France, and Eurofighter Typhoon, built by the Italian-British-European consortium.

The decision of the Defense Ministry of India is extremely important for the whole world market. Russia’s defeat in the tender virtually means that Russia’s Air Force will not be receiving those fighter jets either. It may also mean that Russia’s chances to sell the jets to someone else in the world have decreased considerably, observers say.

Russia was certain from the very beginning that her aircraft would win the tender. Indian experts also estimated Russia’ chances for the victory as very high. The MiG-35 fighter jet was taking an advantage over its competitors with its lower price. The jet is well-known on the world market.

India has given its largest arms contracts to Russia during the recent decade. India ordered Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, a group of MiG-29K jets for the vessel, as well as frigates and a rented submarine. India also joined forces with Russia to build BrahMos cruise missiles, a fifth-generation fighter jet and the new MTA transport plane.

Now Russia has received the official

refusal from India. On Thursday night, Rosoboronexport and MiG design bureau received a letter in which the Defense Ministry of India informed about the preliminary results of the tender which was announced in 2007. The letter contained the detailed analysis of the drawbacks of the Russian offer. One of the claims is reportedly about the engines.

Moscow is trying not to dramatize the situation saying that it was India’s exclusive right to choose the aircraft supplier it needs.

Russia’s Defense Ministry earlier said that it was planning to purchase 26 deck-based MiG-29 and not less than 72 MiG-35. The contracts have not been signed yet. The price of those fighter jets may turn out to be too high for the home market now, after the loss in the Indian tender. If Delhi had purchased the Russian jets, the largest contract would give an opportunity to set the home price for the jet a lot lower.

It now seems unnecessary to develop the production of MiG-35 jets for a relatively small order from the defense ministry. Most likely, Russia will have to shelve those plans. The loss also questions the promotion of the aircraft on other markets - in Latin America and in the Middle East.

MiG, a part of the United Aircraft Corporation, is the oldest designer and manufacturer of combat planes in Russia. The central product of the company is the MiG-29 fighter jet. There have been over 1,600 of them built since 1982.

According to the most recent financial report of the company over 2009, MiG received the profit of 24.8 billion rubles and suffered net losses of 7.9 billion. The debt of the company makes up 44 billion rubles. It is worthy of note that in 2009, Algeria refused from purchasing MiG-29 - the jets were

eventually bought by the Russian Air Force.

The United States, another participant of the Indian tender, has lost too. India declined Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Originally, the American manufacturers were not considered as favorites, but they took the loss very painfully. US Ambassador to India Timothy Roemer stated that the USA was deeply disappointed with the preliminary results of the tender. Mr. Roemer unexpectedly stepped down citing «personal, professional and family considerations.»

The participants of the tender were fighting for their victory selflessly. Presidents of Russia and France, Sarkozy and Medvedev, British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama supported their manufacturers during the final stage of the tender. However, India made the choice which it considered right for itself - in favor of Europe.

Experts believe that India’s choice for European aircraft makers is based on the intention to obtain the technologies required for the realization of its own TEJAS light fighter jet program. The

Russian technologies, which India could obtain with MiG-35 jets, do not fit the program.

The key advantage of the Russian offer was the price. The MiG-35 is the cheapest of all other planes. The most expensive one is Rafale - $79.5 million, whereas the price of MiG is a little more than $40 million.

The contract stipulates the delivery of 126 multi-purpose fighter jets. The winner will have to supply 18 planes. The remaining 108 will have to be assembled in India. The fighter jets will be in service for over 40 years. The supplier will have to guarantee the technical servicing of the jets during that time period.

The list of participants included Russia’s MiG with MiG-35, Europe’s Eurofighter with EF-2000 Typhoon, USA’s Boeing with F/A-18 Super Hornet and Lockheed Martin с F-16 Fighting Falcon, Sweden’s SAAB with JAS-39 Gripen and France’s Dassault Aviation with Rafale.

The cost of the contract is $10.5 billion. The price does not include the possible purchase of 64 more jets and the technical servicing.

My May

One morning I woke up, looked at the calendar, took a deep breath and felt overwhelmed with joy. My most

beloved month of the year began.For me May is:

*A great opportunity to change dark, dull, dark winter outfits for some floral dresses and brightly coloured clothing. It is the perfect time to shop for eye stopping colours and jaw dropping lengths until you get so tired that you crawl home, or realistically speaking, until you go red. Even so, it is the perfect time to go nuts.

*Long walks across London with Bonny M’s “Sunny” blasting in my ears, hiding behind red John Galliano glasses and unplanned smiles to passing people. Let everyone guess who I smile to?

*Lovely time spent with Him on the open terrace of a French restaurant, in the park or elsewhere when you both cannot stop talking about everything. You want these moments to last forever but the fate is against you and tomorrow he will go to another business trip and leave you alone for sometime, again. Nevertheless, the moment of the meeting will come and my heart will skip a beat in anticipation. Separations spice up relationships. I should know.

*Saying goodbye to a person I love. A friend, who was elbowing me during my ups and downs, with whom we shared good and bad moments. That sorrowful moment of my life is a happy one of hers as she will be moving away from the UK. This circumstance darkens my May, but she told me to be optimistic and I will follow her advice. Friendship is something more than hours spent together. Whenever life splits us, we will stay in touch. I promise.

*Victory Day. The day when I feel incredibly patriotic for my Motherland, and saddened by the thoughts of all the families who lost their relatives during the Second World War.

*My Birthday, which every time I try to celebrate in an exceptional way. A trip to the seaside, camping or a theme party. This year’s plan is a party on a roof top terrace. In those altitudes the air is thin.

* A great challenge to start a new project called Russian Mind which means sleeping only a few hours a day, walking home because the underground is already shot and speaking with the art director more than with my own mother. This all means that important changes are taking place in life. I want to develop, especially with May’s magic help.

The disclosure follows a warning by Yandex about the legal and political risks associated with investing in Russia, ahead of its planned listing in New York.

Yandex plans to raise up to $1bn (£600m) through a listing on Nasdaq.

In its prospectus, issued to the US Securities and Exchange Commission last week, the company warned that businesses in Russia «may be subject to aggressive application of contradictory or ambiguous laws or regulations, or to politically-motivated actions».

The Russian legal system is characterised in the document by:

– «inconsistencies between and among laws and regulations»

– «selective enforcement of laws or regulations, sometimes in ways that have been perceived as being motivated by political or financial considerations»

– «a perceived lack of judicial and prosecutorial independence from political, social and commercial forces»

The company also warned that the degree of uncertainty will grow as the 2012 presidential elections approach.

Russia is one of the few countries where Google is not the dominant search engine. Yandex holds 65% of the Russian internet search market while Google has 21.8%.

«Yandex has a very good position

in Russia and some of the former Soviet countries, being the most popular search engine», says analyst Lilit Gevorgyan from IHS Global Insight.

«However, when you hear news that the FSB forced Yandex to reveal the payments through Yandex.Money, it hits the most painful spot: transparency and state intervention.»

Some experts say this episode will not affect the company’s IPO plans.

«All big funds who plan to invest a lot of money in Russia are already aware of these risks,» says Georgy Voronkov, analyst from Investcafe research company.

Yandex plans to follow in the footsteps of another Russian Internet group, Mail.ru, which at the end of last year raised $912m in London.
