GREATHEARTSIRVINGMISSION

ThemissionofGreatHeartsIrving(GHI)istoeducatestudentsforthelifelongpursuitoftruth,goodness,andbeauty.

TheGreatHeartsIrvinggraduatehasafoundationintheliberalartsofgrammarandrhetoric,logicandmathematics,history,naturalscience,andphilosophy.Thegraduatehasalsopracticedthefineartsofmusic,poetry,drawingandpainting,anddrama.Thegraduateisthuspreparedforeverycareer,everycourseofadvancedorspecializedstudy,andeverykindofleisure.Inshort,theGreatHeartsIrvinggraduateisreadyforthelifetimeoflearningthatispossibleforahumanbeing.

GreatHeartsIrvingwillfulfillitsmissionbythefollowingmeans:

• Servicetoarigorous,prescribedliberalartscurriculumthatisthesameforallstudents• Classesof25orlessingrades6-12andof30orlessingradesK-5(withanApprenticeTeacherdedicated,enthusiastic,andintellectually

excellentteacherswhoserveasmodelsoflearningandofcharacter)• Detailedstudentevaluation,withanemphasisuponwritten,narrativeevaluationoflearningratherthanupongradesandpercentages• Regularandmeaningfulhomeworkassignments• Highstandardsofpersonalconductandcomportmentforstudents

CRITERIAFORSTUDENTENTITLEMENTTOTARGETEDASSISTANCEFUNDING

Eligiblechildrenarethoseingrades3-12identifiedasfailingormostatriskoffailingbaseduponSTAAR,DIBELSandMAPtesting.Thefollowingcategoriesarealsoincluded:

1. GradesK-2thatarerecommendedbasedonteacherinput,parentinterviews,andotherdevelopmentallyappropriatemeasures.2. AnychildwhoparticipatedinHeadStart,EvenStart,EarlyReadingFirst,orTitleIpreschoolservicesatanytimewithinthelasttwo

years.3. Anychildattendingacommunitydaycareprogramorlivinginastateorlocalinstitutionforneglectedordelinquentchildren.4. AnychildservedintheprevioustwoyearsundertheMigrantEducationProgram.5. AnychildwhoishomelessandattendinganyschoolservedbyLEA.

GreatHeartsSummerInstitute:TheGreatHeartsSummerInstituteconsistsofacatalogueofcoursesofferedbyGreatHeartsFacultyandStaffthataredesignedtoprovideourteacherstheopportunitytoengageintopicsandreadingsinawaythattheirnormalteachingschedulemaypreclude.Instructionalandinformational,thesecoursesoftentaketheformofastandardGreatHeartsseminar,whereparticipantsareinvitedtoengageinthoughtfuldialoguearoundthecomplextopicsfoundinsomeofthegreatliteratureoftheWesternTradition.AdFiendum:EverySpring,theGreatHeartsProfessionalDevelopmentTeamputstogetheracatalogueofsomeoftheverybestcourses,seminars,andconferencestheycanfindatschoolsanduniversitiesacrossthecountry.Thatcatalogueisdistributedtoallofourteachersinthehopesthattheymayavailthemselvesofoneortwoduringthesummer.Limitedfundsarealsosetasidetoprovidescholarshipsforteacherstoattendtheseofferings.NewFacultyOrientation:Everysummer,allnewhiresarerequiredtoattendaweek-longconference,conductedbyGreatHearts’Seniorleadership,designedtointroducethesenewmembersofourcommunitytoGreatHearts’philosophicalandpedagogicaldistinctives.TheteacherswillparticipateinatleasttwofullseminarsonimportanteducationaltextsandhearlecturesonourHistory,ourPhilosophy,andourLoves.Summit:EveryFall,beforethebeginningoftheschoolyear,alltheteachersofeachparticularregion(AZandTX)cometogetherinacentralizedlocationforafulldaySummit.DuringthisSummit,facultyandstaffwillhavetheopportunitytolistentoakey-noteaddress,andengageinaseminardiscussionofaparticulartext,astheypreparethemselvesforthestartofthenewschoolyear.FallandSpringPDofferings:Eachcampusisresponsibleforschedulingseveralfaculty-widePDopportunitiesfortheirrespectivefacultyinboththeFallandtheSpring.Theseofferingsrangefromreadingatexttogethertoworking,asawhole,throughlabsthatmightbeofferedinourScienceclasses,toNetwork-widevisitstotheSymphony.Ineachcase,ouradministratorsaretaskedwiththeresponsibilitytoprovideopportunitiesforgrowththroughadiversearrayofvenues.

TEKS are identified, curriculum adapted to meet the TEKS, and then implemented in the classroom. The content areas include English Language Arts & Reading, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Health, Fine Arts, Technology Applications, and Health.

TargetedAssistanceComponents:

ToassisttargetedassistanceschoolsandlocaleducationalagenciestomeettheirresponsibilitytoprovideforalltheirstudentsservedunderthisparttheopportunitytomeettheState’schallengingstudentacademicachievementstandards,eachTitleI,PartATargetedAssistanceprogramincludeseightrequiredcomponentswhichmustbeincludedintheimprovementplansfortargetedassistancecampuses.EachTargetedAssistanceprogramshall—

1.usesuchprogram’sresourcesunderthisparttohelpparticipatingchildrenmeetsuchState’schallengingstudentacademicachievementstandardsexpectedforallchildren;

2.ensurethatplanningforstudentsservedunderthispartisincorporatedintoexistingschoolplanning;

3.useeffectivemethodsandinstructionalstrategiesthatarebasedonscientifically-basedresearchthatstrengthensthecoreacademicprogramoftheschoolandthat-giveprimaryconsiderationtoprovidingextendedlearningtime,suchasanextendedschoolyear,before-andafter-school,andsummerprogramsandopportunities;helpprovideanaccelerated,high-qualitycurriculum,includingappliedlearning;andminimizeremovingchildrenfromtheregularclassroomduringregularschoolhoursforinstructionprovidedunderthispart;

7.providestrategiestoincreaseparentalinvolvementinaccordancewithSection1118,suchasfamilyliteracyservices;and

8.coordinateandintegrateFederal,State,andlocalservicesandprograms,includingprogramssupportedunderthisAct,violencepreventionprograms,nutritionprograms,housingprograms,HeadStart,adulteducation,vocationalandtechnicaleducation,andjobtraining.
