MACCIO PHYSICAL THERAPY CELEBRATES
ITS 26th ANNIVERSARY
Maccio, Troy’s first independent physical therapy clinic openedat a small 800 square foot office at 243 Hoosick Street. In1988, we moved west to 197 Hoosick Street, until 1993 whenwe finally settled in our current location at 1 New HampshireAvenue. Our treatment approach to musculo-skeletal injuriesis unique and based on the McKenzie Method and ErgonomicPrinciples. We have been the only Certified McKenzie Spineand Extremity Clinic in the Capital District since 1996. JosephG. Maccio, MA, PT, DipMDT, is the area’s only Diplomat inMechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). We have beenproviding ergonomic consultation to numerous area andinternational industries resulting in dramatic reductions in workrelated injuries.MDT assessment and treatment is a verypowerful tool that can prevent unnecessary surgeries and allow

people to return to their everyday activities even whensymptoms have been chronic. In our clinic hangs a posterindicating our “five top success stories.” Several of the patientslisted here were scheduled for spinal fusions and were able toavoid these surgeries by learning an appropriate treatmentstrategy. The MDT model is different than traditional physicaltherapy, as its emphasis is on determining whether or not anactive derangement of the spine or extremity joint exists andwhether we can find a directional preference to alleviatesymptoms. The importance of screening all musculo-skeletalinjuries using the MDT model is that very often MRI studiescan be misleading. There are many people with positive MRIstudies that do not have complaints of pain. This is why moreand more industries, insurance companies and patients areseeking care from MDT providers. We plan to continue withadvanced training in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment forall of our clinicians. Capital Health Care of Tallahassee, Floridaand the Michelin Tire Corporation have embraced the MDTmodel. It has been shown to not only provide outstandingoutcomes and patient satisfaction, but also reduce thepercentage of low back surgeries by 42 percent and MRI studiesand injections by 70 percent. This is why “We do what we do.”New York is a “Direct Access State” meaning that patients cancome directly to physical therapy without a referral for themajority of insurance plans. At Maccio Physical Therapy wegive you the tools you need to control your pain. We strive toachieve successful outcomes from your initial evaluation toyour discharge.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Thanksgiving has to be one of my favorite holidays, familiesgetting together to give thanks for everything that they have. But this year as you sit around the table, look at all the greatfood being served and ask yourself, where did this all comefrom. At one point it all started out on a farm produced by adedicated farmer. I am sure that some of these dishes thatmake up your feast include dairy, from the dip made with sourcream, the cheese and crackers, the butter used to flavor themashed potatoes and spread on your roll, the tall glass of milk,to the whipped cream on top of your pie, dairy farmers workhard everyday to produce a wholesome product. So give thanksto someone else this year, the Farmers of America, as theyput food on our table every day. I have always been thankfulto grow up on a dairy farm. Working almost every day on thefarm has helped me become a hard working and dependableperson. So this year give thanks to all the farmers, especiallythe great Dairy Farmers of America who work hard to producea pure and nutritious product, milk. Farmers care about theirland, their animals and the outcome of their labor.~ Courtney Luskin, Rensselaer County Dairy Princess

A.P. SCHOLAR athlete
MORGAN RUSH by: Lauren Navratil
This week’s Scholar Athlete of theWeek just began running crosscountry this year, yet has alreadymade quite the impression. WhenI asked Coach Glunk who shethought would make an excellentcandidate, she immediatelyrecom-mended Morgan Rush, asenior at Averill Park High School.Morgan defines the title of ascholar athlete. She beganrunning cross country this year, because she thought it would bea fun, new way to meet peopleand stay in shape. At meets,
which Rush admits can be pretty nerve-racking, she usuallyruns a 5K, which is 3.1 miles. She loves being with the team, because it led her to meet lots of new people that she neverwould have had she never joined the team. Morgan spent manyhours working hard at practice over the summer, all in preparationfor the upcoming season. While being involved in cross country,Rush is also an outstanding student. For the past three years, she has maintained a steady 95 overall GPA. This year she istaking Chic Lit (Women’s Literature), physics, calculus, philosophy, wind ensemble, economics and participation ingovernment. In the future, Morgan plans on majoring inoccupational therapy; possibly at Russell Sage College or UticaCollege. Rush believes that being a scholar athlete means youhave the ability to balance your school work, involvement inathletics and the many other aspects of your life. She wouldlike to thank her parents and sister for all of her success. “They’vereally helped me to get where I am today,” says Morgan. Herfamily has inspired her in so many ways and helped shape whoshe is. While the season has come to a wrap, we wish you thebest of luck, Morgan, in your last year here at APHS!
