FRESH LOCAL PEARS NOW IN SEASON

From: Bruce Robertson, Community EducatorCornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer CountyGreen Anjou, Red Anjou, Bosc, Comice, Bartlett, RedBartlett, Concorde, Seckel, Forelle, Starkrimson . . . theseare some of the varieties of pears grown, sold, andconsumed in the U.S. Basically, pears are grouped in oneof two categories: “Asian” and “European.” “Asian Pears”are firm and crisp, and tend to stay that way longer afterbeing picked. “European pears” are softer and juicier, especially when allowed to ripen.According to fruit growers, the best way to tell if the pearis ripe is to “check the neck.” With your thumb, gentlypress the neck (the stem end.) If it feels soft, the pear isripe and ready. If the neck is firm, leave the pear at roomtemperature, but check it daily.Pears are, quite simply, one of the best fruits: an excellentsource of dietary fiber; low in calories; and, high in vitamins(C, A, and the B-complex.) Pears are also a great sourceof critical minerals such as potassium and magnesium.Pears may be eaten fresh, or used in baking for pies andgarnishes. Or, you might want to try this unique and verysimple recipe:

PEAR HUMMUSINGREDIENTS:

1 C of “chick peas.”4 Bosc pearsOlive oilSalt & Pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:Coarsely chop the pearsBlend all ingredients in a blender, drizzling theolive oil for desired consistency.

COOKING & CREATING FOR A CAUSE

AT CAMP

The FirstR e f o r m e dChurch ofWynantsk i l lwas trying tocome up witha way toc o m b i n echildren andsummer andoutreach andserving ourn e i g h b o r s .From that

conversation, Cooking & Creating for a Cause was born. Weenvisioned a small camp (no more than 20 children) wherechildren from the church community could come together andlearn how God calls us to care for our neighbors in need. Tothis end, the campers would be taught the basics of cookingand sewing to make the gifts we would then give away. The camp ran for one week from 9AM to 1PM, ending withlunch, which the kids prepared for themselves and thevolunteers. With a small army of volunteers and a fearlessleader we were able to create 92 sewing items (not including abunch of cat toys!). We made fleece blankets for a teen shelter, heart pillows for heart surgery patients (used for painmanagement), pillows for a local shelter which houses Mom’sand their children suffering from domestic violence, welcomebags filled with toiletries for the same shelter, “rice bags” forALS patients (also used for pain) and cat toys for the SPCA.We also baked 418 muffins, breads, bags of snack mix, cookies, cupcakes and rice krispie treats for separate homeless shelters!!Each agency was amazed by the gifts from the children. Theywere incredibly excited to both help local neighbors in need aswell as learn important life skills like sewing and cooking. Thecamp helped the children to experience what it means to loveGod and love our neighbors. At the end of the week, eachchild received a recipe book with all the recipes they had createdduring the camp. On Sunday, during worship, we prayed for allthe folks who will receive the children’s gifts. I hope they feeland sense the love and prayers poured into every item!~ Peace, Rev. Dawn Alpaugh, First Reformed ChurchWynantskill
