STATEMENT FROM COUNTY LEGISLATURE

ON MANDATE RELIEF PROPOSAL

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature said they arecautiously optimistic about a proposal introduced in the StateAssembly to provide much-needed mandate relief to counties. However, legislators said they are concerned about the overallprogress of mandate relief and reform efforts in the state.Mandate reform was promised following the enactment of thestatewide tax cap.“We are looking for real action on mandates. We are not seekinganother round of proposals that go nowhere and promises thatadd up to no relief. County taxpayers need real results on thisissue,” said Legislator Lou Desso.Rensselaer County lawmakers have been seeking statepermission to allow counties more control over mandatedprograms not required by the federal government. A reductionin those programs could be accompanied by a required reductionin county budgets.“County lawmakers have been seeking state permission to allowcounties discretion on optional mandates not required by thefederal government. That is one area where there could bereal progress in reducing mandated expenses and overall countytaxpayer costs,” said Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid.“The state promised counties there would be a concretediscussion on mandate relief once a tax cap was enacted. Wehave supported the tax cap and now await the state comingforward with real mandate reform,” said Majority Leader KenHerrington.

MEET PHIL HERRINGTON,

BRUNSWICK TOWN SUPERVISOR,

CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTIONWith a proven record of cutting taxes, improvingservices and providing a transparent and opengovernment for Brunswick residents, Supervisor PhilHerrington seeks re-election this November.Herrington has served as Brunswick Town Supervisorfor 14 years and in that time his administration hassecured 11 budgets without a tax increase.“During the past four years we have worked hard tokeep taxes down while not only providing the sameservices, but in many cases better and moreefficient services,” said Herrington. “Just as manyof our residents have tightened their budgets duringthis economic downturn, so too has the town. Overthe past four years, my administration has worked tirelessly to identify cost-cuttingmeasures while still providing top-notch services.”In recent years the town has improved its bond rating from BAA to A2, a sign ofBrunswick’s increasing fiscal health. In addition, capital investments have savedtaxpayer dollars, such as the purchase of a paver currently operated by townemployees who pave roads at a significantly reduced cost compared to outsidepaving companies.“My administration has worked aggressively to secure grant money to offset the taxburden,” added Herrington. “Grants helped provide solar panels for Town Hall, construct a new bridge and purchase new equipment.”The Town received a $30,000 grant to provide a power study, which helped lead toa $187,000 grant to purchase solar panels for Town Hall. Once installed, the solarpanels will cut the Town’s energy bill by 20% annually, saving taxpayer $4,000/peryear. The Town also secured a federal grant for $1.5 million to install a new bridge onWhite Church Road. The Herrington Administration has both literally and figuratively opened the doors togovernment. Town Hall opened in 2005 and measures such as a new personnelemployee handbook and an updated comprehensive plan opened the governmentalprocess to residents. As Brunswick Town Supervisor, Herrington has put forward 11 budgets without raisingtaxes. “I am proud of my record and I want to continue my fiscally conservativeefforts for the residents of Brunswick as we continue to provide new services, likethe Farmer’s Market, while keeping taxes low.”

MEET RICH MCNALLY

CANDIDATE FOR RE-ELECTION

RENSSELAER COUNTY DISTRICT

ATTORNEYWhen I decided to seek the position of DistrictAttorney for Rensselaer County a little over fouryears ago, my wife and I thought long and hardabout why we were committing the time and energyto the task. Our two daughters were 10 and 7. Therewould be a lot of time away from family. The magnitude of the impact of the office of theDistrict Attorney however cannot be understated. The job is not about box scores and bluster. Thejob is a lawyer’s job. Follow the rule of law, seekjustice for those whose lives have been disruptedby those who prey upon our children, parents, and

loved ones and do justice to the worst of the worst. The office I lead as your District Attorney has won convictions in some of the mostcomplex criminal cases I have seen in practicing criminal law in the Capital District forover twenty years: Infant Homicides; Serial Sex Offenders; Domestic Violence Homicidesand Random Gang Assaults .I was personally about to begin selecting jurors in an eight year old double homicidecase where two men were accused of brutally murdering two people in Troy in 2002,when DNA matched a new suspect. There were countless hours and volumes of workput into that case. We did not rush in. I made the call to dismiss the charges against thewrongfully accused. I directed the investigation that eventually convicted Michael Mosleyof the killings that had haunted the parents of two murdered children and this communityfor nearly a decade. Mosley is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the meantime I’ve led a team of dedicated attorneys and investigators that havemade the criminal justice system in this county work the way it is supposed to. I takepride in our work and our record is proof of our professionalism and effectiveness. I askfor your support and look forward to serving as your District Attorney for the next fouryears.

Joel Abelove is an Afghanistan war veteran, serving our county with the U.S. Army. A formerprosecutor under three District Attorneys inRensselaer County, Joel Abelove has theexperience to enforce our laws. But more thananything, Joel Abelove is a father, a husband, afriend and a protector– someone we need to

keep us safe.

Vote for change. Send criminals to prison. Clean-up our neighborhoods. Vote for Joel Abelove. As District Attorney, Joel Abelove will providethe leadership necessary for a better quality of life for our children, for our families, for our friends and for our communities. Our safety is far too important to put at risk.

HIGHLIGHT ACTING TROUPE PRESENTS

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE

The Highlight Acting Troupe will bepresenting Arsenic and Old Lace writtenby Joseph Kesselring and directed by RonLeVan. Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy aboutthe sweet old Brewster sisters (Lucy Breyer,Georgia Visconti), who are beloved in theirBrooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charity which the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoingeffort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on theirfaces—by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked witharsenic. When the sisters’ drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J.Printsky) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably putout—especially since he has just become engaged to ElaineHarper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given the homicidal tendencies ofhis aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict olderbrother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptive behaviorof younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who is convincedthat he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around the houseyelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine.Further complications ensue when the murderous JonathanBrewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein(Alan Angelo) in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darlingaunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed—they’re challenginghis own record of murders. The show dates are Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 16and 23 and 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 forseniors and students. The performance will take place at theBrunswick Grange, Rt. 7 and Rt. 142 in Brunswick. Forreservations, call Christine at 663-0007.

Adirondack Dental Assisting School, Inc. was established in 2005 in the dental offi ce of Dr. Fred Dreher.

The school is New York State licensed, as well as being Access VR (vocational rehabilitation for adults),

WIA (Work Force Investment Act) and MyCAA (military dependent program) approved.

Adirondack Dental Assisting School provides a certifi cate program which prepares students for entry

level jobs in the dental fi eld. The director, Karen Ostrander, has over 23 years in the dental fi eld as

a Registered Dental Hygienist. Karen also holds a degree in Psychology from Russell Sage College.

The program allows students to learn in a non-stressful environment, in an actual, high tech dental

offi ce. The course covers a wide range of subjects including instrumentation, sterilization and OSHA

regulations regarding infection control, radiography, and numerous dental procedures. The class size is

limited so students have an opportunity for individual attention and hands-on training, without the stress of

learning on actual patients.

Classes are offered on Fridays or Saturdays, which allows currently employed people who are looking for a career change to attend without leaving their current position. Students can obtain more information regarding the Adirondack Dental Assisting School at the website adirondackschool.com.
