DO YOU LIKE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD?

Would like it to stay like it is? If so, there is somethingyou can do. If you live in the Town of Brunswickmake sure that you tell your Town government thatyou want slow growth that keeps neighborhoodcharacter. Do this by completing the survey on theTown’s website (www.townofbrunswick.org) look forlink to Comprehensive Plan survey. The surveydeadline is June 29. In addition, there is a publicmeeting to gather ideas from residents 7:00PM July11th at Tamarac High School. These are part ofupdating the existing Comprehensive Plan.

The Comprehensive Plan is supposed to be thefoundation of future zoning decisions and providestandards for future amendments. The importanceof participating in the update is according to StateLaw, “All town land use regulations must be inaccordance with a comprehensive plan …” (StateTown Law Section 272-a. 11). By making theComprehensive Plan reflect what you want yourneighborhood to be, you can ensure the zoningregulations protect your wishes. Future changes tozoning regulations can be measured against theComprehensive Plan.

This is important in light of the controversy aboutzoning over the last 5 years. Many residents weresurprised shortly after the Comprehensive Plan wasadopted in 2001 when a series of zoningamendments were proposed. These amendmentsknown as Planned Development Districts wererequested by real estate developers. Theseamendments allow development of large portionsof Town and could increase the population by 30%.2,000 residents signed a petition asking that theComprehensive Plan be reviewed before theseamendments be adopted. Instead, the Town Boardadopted the developer’s amendments. Residents ofthe North Forty neighborhood battled a proposedPDD that would have put an industrial use in theirback yards. After 4 years, the Town Board gave in tothe organized efforts of the North Forty and deniedthis PDD.

The time to discuss the future development ofBrunswick is now when the policy is being made.We should not be surprised and forced to debatewhen multiple large PDDs have already been plannedby developers.

Although it appears in the past developers have hadmore say than residents, it is important to attendmeetings and respond to surveys. “The participationof citizens in an open, responsible and flexibleplanning process is essential to the designing of theoptimum town comprehensive plan.” (State TownLaw Section 272-a.1(c). The law says citizens, notdevelopers.

THE CASE FOR

CHOOSING NATIVE

PLANTS

Consider the fol lowingbenefits of choosing nativeplants before addressing yourlandscape.* Native plants benefit localwildlife. The native plants andthe native wildlife spent yearsand years evolving together, with each doing their part toensure the other’s survival. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, sochoosing these plants insteadof exotic plants can helpensure the survival of wildlifethat helps keep the ecosystemin check.* Native plants requireless work. Many exoticplants require significant workon a homeowner’s part tosurvive, while native plantshave already adapted to thelocal climate and will requiremuch less care. This is oftenattractive to current andfuture homeowners alike.* Native plants might bea better investment. Anative plant has evolved overthe years to survive in itsgiven area. Local insectpopulations and fungalinfections might be able todestroy an exotic plant, but anative plant has grown

resistant to such problems andlikely has the ability to fightsuch infestations or infectionson its own. An exotic plantmight require costly pesticides

and considerable attentionfrom homeowners to survivesuch problems.Though homeowners mightfind exotic plants help their

home stand out from theirneighbors’, it’s important thathomeowners recognize theenvironmental benefits ofchoosing local plants beforemaking any decisions.
