RESCUE DOG ADOPTION CLINICCapital Agway in the town of Brunswick on Rte 7 east, about5 miles of Troy, will be hosting a dog adoption clinic sponsoredby the volunteer dog rescue group Peppertree on Saturday,February 4th from 10AM to 1:30PM. There will be many dogsranging in size from small to large who are looking for a familyto make them part of their forever home. Peppertree is an allvolunteer organization with members from Rensselaer, Albany,Schenectady, Columbia, Greene and Saratoga counties. Theirmany devoted volunteers do their best to ensure that eachdog is evaluated before being offered for adoption. If there is a particular dogyou are interested in, read the information on the websiteand fill out an application electronically in advance of theadoption clinic or call the Peppertree hotline at 435-7425. In addition, Peppertreecollaborates with other rescue groups and also helps matchpotential adopters with families who must surrender theirdogs, resulting in many additional adoptions.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the townsof Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy toprovide our constituents with a report on actions taken at theJanuary 12, 2012 legislative meeting.The Legislature approved the completion of a contract withcounty employees that produced a savings for health carecosts. That savings allowed the county to find funding to main-tain needed county services. Those services include continuedoperation of the Rensselaer Senior Center, which is often vis-ited by seniors from our district.The Legislature also approved the naming of the official news-papers of the county, with the Times Union and The Recordnamed. Residents can check both newspapers for legal noticesand other information regarding the county.In our continuing effort to control costs, the Legislature formu-lated a new county vehicle use, or fleet management policy.Vice Chairman for Finance Phil Danaher helped develop thepolicy, which will help regulate use, and more effectively man-age costs related to the county fleet. The new policy will alsohelp chart maintenance information on each vehicle and comesa few years after the Legislature implemented a policy thatrequires a vehicle to be removed from the county fleet eachtime a vehicle is purchased.We also recently joined Legislator Ken Herrington in voicingobjections to a billboard campaign that falsely depicts the healthimpacts of cheese. One of the billboards has been placed in thecounty at the intersection of State Routes 9 & 20 in Schodack,and local businesses have protested the billboard. The bill-board is also harmful to local farms and dairy producers whoare dealing with difficult market conditions, along with provid-ing false information to residents.The Legislature also approved resolutions for the repair andmaintenance of highway vehicles, along with legislation formaintenance of county roads. In late December, a state taskforce on mandate reform unveiled a report that included little inthe way of specific recommendations or findings. As countylawmakers, we are concerned with the lack of progress and willcontinue to urge the state to formulate a mandate reform planthat protects services and taxpayers. The next meeting of theRensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, February 14. The program is free to the County and free to allresidents.“I am confident that this program will prove to be extremelybeneficial to the residents of Rensselaer County as it is easyto use and provides significant savings on the costs ofmedications,” said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M.Jimino.The cards will provide users with discounts ranging from 10 to20 percent on brand name drugs and 20 to 70 percent ongeneric drugs. Over the next week Rensselaer Countyresidents will begin receiving the discount card via the USPostal Service at their home address. Cards will also beavailable at various County facilities throughout the County.Using the card is easy, simply present the card to the pharmacyalong with a new prescription or refill to receive savings.“The County Legislature is happy to again join efforts to controlthe costs of health care and prescription drugs. TUTUNJIAN SEEKS TO INCLUDE THA ON

COUNTY BIDS TO GENERATE SAVINGSRensselaer County Legislator Harry Tutunjian says he will introducelegislation that seeks to allow the Troy Housing Authority to utilizecounty bids, a move that could help reduce costs and encourageefficiency.The legislation would allow the THA to use county bid lists topurchase a wide variety of goods, ranging from cleaning suppliesto maintenance materials, stationery, various equipment andfurnishings.A recent review of THA purchases, when compared with priceson the county bid list, show an opportunity for savings, saidhousing authority officials.“There is an opportunity to reduce costs for the Troy HousingAuthority by allowing the THA to utilize the county’s bid lists.Such a move would also increase efficiency for the THA andreduce duplicative paperwork,” said Tutunjian.“In this day and age, we have to make every tax dollar count,and this appears to be a solid way to reduce costs borne by thetaxpayer,” added Tutunjian.Allowing the THA to utilize county bids could potentially strengthenthe county’s combined purchasing power, as well, said Tutunjian.The county currently allows municipalities and other publicorganizations to utilize the county bid lists.“This move could also help the county by strengthening thecounty’s purchasing clout and help the county negotiate betterprices to benefit county taxpayers,” said Tutunjian.Tutunjian said he plans on introducing a resolution requesting theTHA to be allowed to utilize the county’s bid lists for the February14 legislative meeting.Tutunjian served two terms as mayor of Troy, and was appointedto the County Legislature in January to fill a vacancy. Two termsis the length a mayor can serve due to previously adopted termlimits legislation.

RENSSELAER COUNTY OFFERS PET

VACCINATION CLINICSRensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino has announcedthe 2012 schedule of the County’s Rabies Vaccination Clinics. Theclinics aim to prevent human exposure to the potentially deadlydisease by immunizing domestic animals and pets that could potentiallycarry the disease. “Protecting your pets from rabies by vaccinatingthem is a crucial step in preventing human exposure to this deadlydisease and I encourage all pet owners to take advantage of theseclinics,” said County Executive Jimino. HOUSE & “NEW” SENIOR LEAGUEBrunswick Baseball is currently registering players age 13-16 for the 2012 House Leagueseason.Players must register on-line by visiting our website @ www.eteamz.com/brunswickbaseballand clicking on the Links Tab on our Home-page menu. The House League will be expanded toa 16 game schedule beginning in Late April and running until the end of June. The 2012registration fee will continue to be $115.00 per player. NEW in 2012 is a Senior House league,open to players 17-21 YOA. This will be a wood bat league with games played at the BrunswickSports Complex on Rte 2 in the Town of Brunswick. The registration fee will be $135 per playerwith a tentative 12 game schedule planned to begin during the last week of May and run intoJuly. The Brunswick Baseball League is an independent League with no boundaries andregistration is open to all interested players. STORY DINNER IN BRUNSWICKFriday night (1/20), Gilead Lutheran Church in Brunswick,hosted the first of three Story-Dinners that they have planned.The dinner was hosted by the Stewardship-Multi Committeemembers. The meal consisted of 2 types of chili and 2 types ofstew, along with a green salad, and various breads anddesserts.The guest speaker was Christine Nash, Deacon for TrinityLutheran Church of West Sand Lake, NY. Chris treated us to anumber of great short stories, attaching most of them to abiblical quote.The theme offered this evening was a coverage of Stewardshipquotes from a number of famous people, including Dr. MartinLuther King Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, ThomasJefferson, Martin Luther, Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses S. Grant,and of course, the Bible.Although the evening was cold, the roads were dry and wehad a nice turnout. There was a “Free Will” offering to raisemoney to send the confirmation age children to Youth Camp.The evening was very enjoyable, with plenty fellowship and alot of laughter in-between the stories. I consider our first ofthree dinners to have been a success! The next dinner isplanned for Friday, February 17th, at 6PM and is open to thepublic. Check us out online at gileadlutheran.org. The collection includes theTroy High School Dardanian yearbook. Yearbooks can be used fororganizing class reunions, genealogy adoption searches andhistorical research, as well as for reminiscing. The years we arelooking for are: anything before 1916, 1919-1922, 1934, 1939-1942,1944-1945, 1947-1948, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1956, 1958, 1997-2000, 2004-present. The ice skating rink is open free to the public to use and willcontinue through the winter months as weather conditionsallow. The rink will be open daily from 10 am – 4 pm. Fridaynight skating is back until 8pm and ice skate rentals are availableon this night only, along with food and hot beverages. Thereare over 6 miles of groomed trails that are open for X- countryskiing and snowshoeing. There is no fee to enter the parkduring the winter months.
