Loucene Trueworthy, EastGreenbush’s oldest born andliving resident, recentlycelebrated her 104thBirthday. A birthdaycelebration was held at thehome of her daughter,Cynthia Becker. Inattendance were 20 membersof the “Yankee DoodleEntertainers”, a group ofwhich Loucene was a memberas the pianist for 11 years.The group performed avariety show consisting of seniors from the area for residentsof nursing homes, senior centers and assisted living residents.Loucene was entertained with singing, dancing, banjo andguitar playing by members of the group. Loucene who retiredfrom the Bame Insurance Agency, is a member of the UnitedMethodist Church in East Greenbush, a former member of theBell Choir, a member of the Historical Society, the GreenbushGarden Club, The Eastern Star of East Greenbush and TheRensselaer Senior Center, where she was a former member ofthe line dance group.Loucene can be seen at local plays and concerts in EastGreenbush; also shopping at the local supermarkets with herwalker. Governor’s 2013 State Budget ProposalGovernor’s 2013 State Budget ProposalGovernor’s 2013 State Budget ProposalGovernor’s 2013 State Budget ProposalGovernor’s 2013 State Budget ProposalI am disappointed that property tax relief for our overburdenedproperty taxpayers is not a priority in this budget proposal.With 89 cents of every dollar raised locally going to pay forstate and federal mandates, I had hoped the Governor wouldaddress the state mandates that drive local costs and localtaxes as we continue to be forced to fund those mandatedprograms. From my initial review, it appears the only mandaterelief proposal included in the Governor’s budget that wouldaffect the County is the pension proposal that would allow usto borrow from the pension system to reduce short termexpenses while requiring us to pay additional costs in the future.Based on what I have seen thus far, the Governor’s proposedbudget would still require an increase in state mandatedspending for county property taxpayers in the areas ofMedicaid, welfare, and children with special needs programsamong others. The result will be more pressure to cut localservices our residents rely upon or raise taxes on those sameresidents to pay the state’s bills.Once the complete budget proposal is available, we will begina detailed review to see if any changes are proposed to otherexisting or new state mandates for counties and how they willaffect us.
