RED CROSS ISSUES EMERGENCY CALL FOR

BLOOD AND PLATELET DONORS

The American Red Cross issued an emergency request forplatelet and blood donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeveand give because many fewer donations than expected werereceived in June and the first week of July.Nationwide, donations through the Red Cross were downapproximately 10 percent in June, resulting in about 50,000fewer donations than expected. The shortfall is similar to whatthe Red Cross experienced in June 2012.June can be among the most challenging months of the yearfor blood and platelet donations as regular donors delay givingwhile they adjust to summer schedules. High school and collegeblood drives account for as much as 20 percent of Red Crossdonations during the school year. Donations from those whousually give at these drives drop by more than 80 percentwhen school is out for the summer. In addition, a mid-weekIndependence Day holiday reduced the number of blood drivesscheduled in early July. Many sponsors, especially businesses, were unable to host drives because employees took extendedvacations. The Red Cross urgently needs donations to ensure an adequateblood supply is available for patients all summer long. Eachday, the American Red Cross New York-Penn Blood Region needsapproximately 1,200 donors to step forward and give blood.Eligible donors with types O negative, B negative and A negativeblood are especially encouraged to give. Type O negative isthe universal blood type and can be transfused to anyone whoneeds blood. Types A negative and B negative can be transfusedto Rh positive or negative patients. There is also an urgent need for platelet donations. Platelets –a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancerpatients - must be transfused within five days of donation, soit’s important to have a steady supply of platelets on hand. How to Donate Blood: Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointmentor for more information. All blood types are needed to ensurea reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’slicense, or two other forms of identification are required atcheck-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parentalpermission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and arein generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Highschool students and other donors 18 years of age and youngeralso have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Jim Hulihan serving both churches. In the Lutheran catechism, the sixth petition, ‘’the Lord’sprayer’’, and “lead us not into temptation’’ means God temptsno one to sin, but we ask in this prayer that God would watchover us and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinfulself may not deceive us and draw us into false belief, despair, and other great and shameful sins.We pray that even though we are so tempted, we may still winthe final victory. We are now focusing on ‘’build one anotherup’’ (1thessalonians 5:11) otherwise, let us focus on positiveenergy, on the other hand, look for signs of God’s grace in ourcommunity life and seek to ‘’build one another up”.Also, starting up in the fall, families with children at or nearage 14 are asked to join our two year program of instructionwhich begins in September.
