STORY OF THE U.S.S. MONITOR”The Troy Public Library and HVCC are pleased to announce theprogram, “The Capital Region’s Role in the Story of the U.S.S.Monitor,” presented by Dr. P. Thomas Carroll, executive directorof the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway in Troy, at 6:30 pmon Monday, February 11th, 2013, at the Main Library.The 1862 Civil War encounter between the U.S.S. Monitor andthe C.S.S. Virginia, known as the “Battle of the Monitor andthe Merrimac,” is generally agreed to be the world’s first militaryengagement between two ironclad vessels. The circumstancesof this battle changed the course of naval warfare andeventually rendered the wooden warship obsolete. Dr. Carrolldiscusses the making of the U.S.S. Monitor and the battle thatwould not have happened had the ship not been constructedin record time in 1861-62. This program is being held inconjunction with the HVCC exhibit, “Lincoln: the Constitutionand the Civil War,” running from January 18th through February28th at the college. Mr. Esposito, a retired librarianand life-long resident of Troy, is the author of Troy’s Little Italy(Arcadia Publishing, 2009). He first heard stories of theneighborhood from his parents. His mother was a sewingmachine operator in Troy and his father was a fruit peddlarwho sold produce door to door. Signing up for schoolEach school district has its own requirements to beginkindergarten, so parents should familiarize themselves with theirschool district as soon as possible. One of the primaryrequirements is age. Children generally have to meet a certainage requirement (usually age 5), meaning their birthdays haveto take place prior to or by a cut-off date.Public schools will also require proof of residence. They oftenrequire utility bills with the student’s address on them. Privateschools typically have more lenient residence requirements.Most entering students also will need to have received all thenecessary vaccinations. If the student has not received allimmunizations, he or she will need to do so before enrolling.Getting preparedSome children are anxious to be “big kids” and begin school.Others may be nervous about what’s in store. The best way toprepare children is to think about enrolling them in some sort ofsocial program. Preschool is the avenue many parents choose,but simply spending time together with other kids in a structuredsocial setting is enough for many kids to get acclimated.

Talking about what to expect at school can also ease jitters.Parents can establish a school-like structure at home to illustratetheir points. Have set times for meals and snacks, require smallchores be done on time and set additional rules and limits. Bedtime and wake times should be the same each day as well.Children who are unaccustomed to having structure may findthe rigors of the classroom scary.Parents should inquire about touring the school to help calmkids’ nerves. This way children will see exactly what environmentthey will be working in each day.

AP BOARD OF EDUCATION REPORTDear Averill Park Community Members, The long term planninggroup (AP 2020) has held 4 meetings. The group is looking athow to position the district for the upcoming years by revisingthe district mission statement and goals. We would like tothank them for being part of the dialogue. Information aboutthe planning results will be shared on the district website andFacebook page.We continue conversations with our elected officials on thelocal and federal levels.
