APPOINTMENTS TO COMMITTEES OF COUNCIL

Barrie City Council invites

applications from citizens who desire

to have their names considered

for appointment to the various

committees listed below. This is an

opportunity for you to participate in

the operation of your City.

Barrie Public Library Board - This

board is responsible for planning and

policy decisions related to the City's

public library service. Individuals

with marketing, financial, legal or

planning expertise or who have a

keen interest in the development

of library services and facilities are

encouraged to apply. Seven (7)

citizens may be appointed for a term

to expire November 30, 2014.

Communities in Bloom – This

committee endeavours to help

facilitate the development of Barrie,

in the Communities in Bloom

national municipal beautification

contest, with a focus on flowers,

landscaping, gardens, beautification

and environmental awareness. Five

(5) citizens may be appointed for a

term to expire November 30, 2014.

Environmental Advisory Committee - The purpose of this committee

is to promote the protection,

maintenance and awareness of the

environment within the community

and to provide advice concerning

environmental policy, planning and

sustainability. Five (5) citizens may

be appointed for a term to expire

November 30, 2014.

Town and Gown Committee – The

mandate of this committee is to

develop and enhance relationships,

communications and policies

between Georgian College, students,

the City and the community. One (1)

citizen may be appointed for a term

to expire November 30, 2014.

Property Standards Committee

- The purpose of this committee

is to hear appeals from owners or

occupants who are not satisfied with

the terms of an Order issued under

the City’s By-law 84-200, Minimum

Standards and Occupancy By-law.

Five (5) citizens will be appointed for

a term to expire November 30, 2014.

Winterizing Your Curb CollectionFor kids, snowboarders, and for some snow-blower

owners, abundant snow promises a good time. But when it comes to waste collection, heavy snowfalls mean mountainous snow banks, which can be a nuisance for you and even a danger for waste collectors.

This winter, here’s how you can winterize your curbside collection materials to ensure that your household waste is collected every time and to minimize other problems or dangers:

Where to put it? Please place your collection materials in a visible location, on the right side (facing the street) of the end of your driveway, ensuring that they are placed well out of the way of snow-removal equipment’s path.

Knee Height or Lower Materials placed high on top of snow banks not only make waste collection a challenge for waste collectors, but can compromise their health and safety. For this reason, it is advised to place your collection at knee height (approximately 2 ft) or lower to ensure that is picked up.

Spilled Contents If collection materials are hit by snow removal equipment prior to collection, you are responsible for the clean-up. Any blue, gray, or organics bins damaged in the process can be replaced by calling (705) 739-4219.

Keep it Dry To prevent snow build-up and to prevent waste from freezing to the bottom and sides of your containers, keep your recycling boxes and organic bins in a dry

area throughout the week. Lining your organics bin with a certified compostable (e.g. paper) liner is

another way to prevent waste from freezing onto your bin.

Frozen Waste Lining Your Bins Please note, since excessive force necessary to remove frozen matter lining your bins could cause damage, collectors are required to only tap them lightly. Therefore, some materials frozen onto your waste bins and boxes may remain.

Make Your Collection Visible Remember it is your responsibility on waste collection day to remove any snow covering collection materials due to snowfall or snow-removal equipment in order to make them visible and accessible.

Christmas Trees Christmas trees free of plastic and decorations are collected weekly throughout the month of January on your regular waste collection day. Trees must be visible and accessible ( maximum 2.6 metres in height) Remove any snow coverage due to snowfall or snow-removal equipment.

Are you tired of being a starving artist? Do you have a strategy for securing your financial future?

The City of Barrie is undertaking a Review of both the Property Standards By-law No. 2006-26 and the Clean yards by-law No. 90-355. These by-laws govern the maintenance and upkeep of all properties and structures in the City of Barrie.

The City is looking for input from all stakeholders including property owners, tenants and property managers for the standards that the community wants. This input will be considered for inclusion in the revised by-laws to be presented to Council in the Spring of 2011.

There will be two Open Houses held in the Sir Robert Barrie Room located on the second floor of City Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on: Thursday, January 13th and Thursday, January 27th 2011.

There will be an opportunity to review the proposed property standards. Staff will also be on hand to answer questions, accept comments and suggestions.

Clearing Snow on Your PropertyThe City devotes a great deal of resources to

keep your streets and sidewalks clear

of snow and ice after a snow fall. Frequently,

residents push, throw or otherwise deposit

snow and ice from their property onto the

street or sidewalk not realizing that this

action contravenes municipal regulations.

This practice contributes to unsafe driving

and walking conditions and increases the

cost of providing winter road maintenance.

You can make a difference. When you are

clearing snow from your driveway, please

keep this snow on your property. Your

efforts in helping us make winter driving

and walking safe for everyone

are appreciated.

January 22 Introductory Magic Workshop 1:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m., Angus Ross RoomLearn how to do some magic tricks using simple household items. We are very pleased to have the Amazing Frank Clarkson leading this workshop as we have all enjoyed his many incredible magic shows at the library. For ages 6-10 (no exceptions). January 13 - March 3 Kinder ReadThursdays -1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Oro District Lions Program Room The Barrie Public Library is pleased to support Lakehead University Education Students by offering this program opportunity. Stories, songs and other literacy activities for children ages 3 – 5 years. Parents are not present at this program but must remain in the Library. Library staff and Lakehead University staff will be jointly monitoring this program. Register in person at the Children’s Information Desk in person or by calling (705) 728-1010 ext. 7019. Limit of 12 children.

January 18,19 – March 8, 9 Circle of Readers - Winter SessionTuesdays 6:30 - 7:30 p.m., Angus Ross Room or Wednesdays 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Lions Oro Program RoomThis program is aimed at children who need a bit of help building their reading skills. Under the supervision of library staff and volunteers, children ages 6-9 years come together to read for fun. Volunteers work one on one with a child for the first part of the hour, reading and doing reading games. Everyone then joins in a circle to share a book. This program is free but you must register your child. Register at the Children’s Information Desk or by calling (705) 728-1010 ext. 7019.

This workshop will help you take the first steps in creating a plan

in the arts. Topics covered will be budgeting, managing
