Political parties, churches and residentsput their individual ideologies aside to unitein prayer.
Two prayer groups covered different partsof town.
Posters displaying prayers and sloganslike, “May God be merciful and bless Mthatha. . . Mthatha for Jesus . . . Restore us, O Lordand bring us back to you again.”
According to Pastor Nozuko Joyi of the Ap-
ostolic Faith Mission of South Africa andChairperson of the InterdenominationalWomen in Leadership Forum, the purpose ofthe prayer march was to put a stop to the in-creasing number of murders, rapes, elderlyabuse, prostitution and all other crimes in theMthatha CBD and surrounding areas.
“Today we are gathered here to pray to theliving God in an attempt to put an end to allthe illicit deeds inour communities,” she said.Pastor Joyi further said they were no longersafe in the places which are supposed to betheir sanctuary – referring to North Crest.
The two groups met at Munitata FreedomSquare where the prayers continued.
Ngqongwana urged residents to work to-gether with the police in fighting crime andother deeds that painted a bad picture of Mt-hatha.
“Police are human like you and me; theycannot do it alone. Let us assist them in mak-ing sure that we restore Mthatha’s reputa-tion. Parents please guard your children,”said the mayor.

THE Deputy Minister of Communication, Stella Ndabe-ni-Abrahams, vowed that her department wouldstrengthen its relations with the community media sec-tor, because it reaches people on the ground.
Ndabeni-Abrahams made this pledge during a recentvisit to Mthatha. Her visit followed a racket from thelocal media which raised concerns over the lack of sup-port fromgovernment departments in theEasternCape.Ndabeni agreed that they didn’t support local media,
forgetting that community media is a powerful tool toconvey information to the people.“Bynot using localmedia,we overlook the peoplewho
put us where we are today. Most of the people who reador listen to the local media are those who are on theground, particularly in deep remote areas. If we don’treach them, we will have a problem, since they put usinto power,” said Ndabeni. She called onmunicipalities to utilise the localmedia,
because they formed part of local economic develop-ment. “It is true that we don’t support the local media. Our focus is on big newspapers or electronic media. Asgovernment and local media we need to come togetherand understand the importance of working together. That would indeed need continuous engagement.”She called on localmedia houses to work together and
to rather complement one another than compete againsteach another. She saidherdepartmentwaswilling tohelp communi-
tymedia andwould also try to assist with skills develop-ment. She promised to return to engage againwith localmedia and to plan the way forward.

A POSSIBLE geographical name change isback on the cards for Port St Johns (PSJ).
Should the process go ahead, this top-tour-ism destinationmay soon be known asMzim-vubu Caguba or Sajonisi. The committee that would deal with the
name change was established on Friday andall stakeholders are expected to meet soon, todiscuss the way forward.According to committee chairperson,
Sonwabile Lobi, the OR Tambo District Mu-nicipality Is expected to be included in the
stakeholder meeting. He said on the day theywere expecting submissions from the commu-
nity regarding the name change. In previous meetings, PSJ residents had
varied views regarding the name. Some feltthat Port St Johns was a colonial name, while
others were insisting that it should be kept. The town is thought to have been named af-
ter a Portuguese ship, the Sao Joao, whichwas wrecked at Port Edward. It is believed that seafarers later mistaken-
ly identified the mouth of the UmzimvubuRiver as the site of the wreck.PSJ was established in 1880 by the British
after negotiations with the local Pondo chiefsover rights to the banks of the river and adja-cent territories. The river mouth was used asaport. This activitywas, however, abandonedin the 1940’s due to siltation, which caused theriver to become too shallow for vessels.PSJ lies above the mouth of the Mzimvubu
River, a river flowing through an impressivegorge known as the “Gates of St John” intoan estuary located in the Indian Ocean. The river ravine is flanked by high sand-
stonemountain peaks named after two BritishMilitary officers – Mount Thesiger which is342mandMountSullivan,304mabovesea level.“Weare extending an invitation to all groups
andindividuals tosubmit theirsubmissionsre-garding the proposed name change of Port StJohns,”saidaPortStJohnsLocalMunicipalityspokespersonwhoalsoconfirmedthat the initi-ative was going ahead. Former councillor andPort St Johns resident, Ndzamela Ncoyini saidPort St Johns was a recognised brand. “Tochange it takes us back to square one, since wewould need to start from scratch with market-ing the town.Rightnow it iswell knownbyeve-rybody locally and globally. No doubt, thetown’s place in the tourism market would dis-appear as soon as the name changes. I have noproblem with the changing of street names,”concluded Ndzamela.

SOME Chiefs of the AbaThembu are furiouswith President Jacob Zuma, since they be-lieve the President is overstepping his bound-aries.
The AbaThembu chiefs’ issued a statementfollowing the revelation last week, that theAbaThembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, would be dethroned.According to the chiefs, AbaThembu issues
needed to be addressed by the AbaThembuand not by the president. They described Zuma’s reaction towards
the issueof theAbaThembukingship, as over-stepping which could divide the AbaThembunation. The King had received a letter from Presi-
dent Zuma, giving Dalindyebo 30 days to ex-plain why he should be al-lowed to keep his throne. This letter followed the ac-tion of other Dlomos who hadlodged a grievance, demand-ing the dethroning ofDalindyebo. They thought the king’s be-
haviour to be “unbearable”and further believed that theking was allegedly involvedin crime.Dalindyebo was convicted
on 10 charges of culpablehomicide, arson and kidnap-ping in 2009. He appealedagainst the convictions. But a pro-Dalindyebo grouping disputed
this and said not all the Dlomos were com-plaining about the King andthat the decision was neverdiscussed or taken to Bum-bane Great place, where theDlomos and the Thembus de-cided over their matters. The chiefs said Zuma was
not a court that can give theking an ultimatum demand-ing a response within 30 days.“Only a court can do that, notthe president.”They said the president
should institute a commissionof enquiry if he thought therewas something wrong withthe kingship of the AbaThem-
bu. The king’s right hand man, Nkosi Jonas

Ndzambule – who was also present when theking handed a petition to Zuma in his office– said they were surprised to have receiveda letter from the president demanding an an-swer within 30 days.According tohim,Zumahadnever respond-
ed to their petitionwhen theywere asking thepresident to steer clear of Thembu nationmatters. He said the AbaThembu nation was not
having problems in solving their matters.“So, presently the president must stay awayfrom the Thembus and if they fail to solvetheir ownproblems, then onlywould they callon the president.” Ndzambule said the Them-bu nation is expected to meet this comingweekend.Attempts to reach the office of the president
for comment were fruitless.

THE tent at Fairfield Junior SecondarySchool in KwaDosi location near Mthathawas jam-packed last week, when Lilitha Col-lege of Nursing fourth-year students educat-
ed the masses on cognitive disorders thatcontinued to result in the death of the elder-ly in rural areas.
Cognitive disorders are a category of men-tal health disorders that primarily affectlearning, memory, perception and problemsolving.
A student, Nonkululeko Matikinca, said acognitive disorder is an illness. “It is causedby the deterioration of brain cells owing toaging, use of medication or brain infectionslike meningitis.”
She further explained that the symptomsof cognitive disorders differed from personto person. “Some sufferers experience hallu-cinations, while others talk to themselves, just like the SABC1 Generations soapiecharacter, Sompisi.”
According to the college’s principal, Nom-boniselo Ngqele, the objective of the eventwas to give back to the community as partof Nelson Mandela’s 67 minutes. She harsh-ly criticised the abuse and killing of elderlypeople suffering from the disease, which isperceived by some as being witchcraft.
“This is mental health awareness in an at-tempt to remove the stigma of witchcraftamong elderly people, especially in the ruralareas.
“Nowadays, if an elderly person is mental-ly ill, they are often accused of practisingwitchcraft,” said Ngqele.

THE UMGOSI team recently found out whysome teachers of today were not getting anydeserved respect from their learners. What isthe story my boys?
You know maan; we travel a lot especiallyin this land of Express.Ja, we were at Club 40 in Cala the entirenight last Saturday, bekumnandi ziphendukaabantwana belahlile amajita etiphile ngelixa
those impressive thighs. Mawwuuu!!!.We asked the chaps who knew the guy whohe is. That’s when we heard that the man is ateacher and he teaches these girls at school, meaning that now he was giving them the les-sons of club and alcohol.Ibe phi ke intlonipho xa bede babakhuphebayosela nabo kona uzakumtitsha njani phayaesgera kuba udla ngokukubona utiphile ulahlaetywaleni.Niphindenithiumgosiuthetha izinto zomqa-la wakhe.Kuthi thina booGeshwawungayenzi nje intoyokumokola notitsha wakho even udibananaye endleleni wawubaleka okanye uyokum-phathisa lo nto ayiphetheyo.Mara ngoku these teachers asks for a skeifkubo if not a hair spray.Meaning that the respectwas therekuthi andalso the teachers liked to be respected by theirlearners. But ngoku OWWW!! Kunzima.
Shame, she turned out to be a drunkard
If you remember at the beginning of theyearwe advised the newcomers to the tertiarylevel to be strong and concentrate on theirstudies as there were many challenges in thislevel.Wealsomade themawareof badbuddies.Butit seemed as if there were some who never con-sidered our advice kanti once you fail to followthe guidance of Gossip team, uyakuphalala njengamanzi, akutsho thina kutsho iculo lokholo.Like a young girl who is at WSU right now, where she is doing her first year but we are notsure about the course. If you look at her face, the professional phuza face is written on thatthen pretty face because she is all over UTA inthe mnandi places. We never visited any club in UTA withouther presence. From ladies’ night, on Thursday,up until Sunday morning. Uyakuthanda uku-khulula ahambe ze enjalo nje, xa sebanjwenga-mambawu. Oh! Shame. You knowwhatmy girl, this is UTA, and soze
ubugqibe ubumnandi bala mara buse bug-qibe wena as you can see now.Just take a mirror and look at yourpresent face and take your first photo whenyou arrived at UTA, there is a big difference.Once you commit if not dedicate yourselfto alcohol or abuse any drug you end up use-less and futureless whereas your parents ifnot your relativeswere trying tomouldyourfuture to become a better person when theyare no longer on this land. You must remember your parents whosent you here to get a decent education in-stead wena uvele ngomqala etywaleni. They are now appealing to anyGood Samaritans to help supportthem to fulfill their dream of improv-ing the local economy through thesport of cycling. The club, which was established in
2008, intends to host a big cyclingrace inMthatha, but this vision is be-ing hindered by a lack of support andresources. They are now having to resort to
appealing to any Good Samaritan toprovide assistance with gettingmorebicycles, as well as a sponsor thatcould assist with transport for racesoutside the area. This year the club started a cam-
paign for the collectionof oldbicycleswith the intention to repair them. This is to accommodate all membersof the team during the training ses-sions, since they do not have enoughbicycles.Through the campaign they have-
managed to collect 18 bicycles. How-ever, since they have more than 30members, they still need more bicy-cles.“When we attended bicycle races
throughout SouthAfrica, we realisedthat the host towns are normally ben-efiting economically and that’s what
we want for our town and its econo-my. We are sick and tired of only at-tending races elsewhere. We need tohost races here and bring more peo-ple who would contribute in develop-
for cycling over the years.Team members are aged from 16.

tive of the club was to devel-op youth in cycling and toteach them the value ofsport.“You know, people don’t
understand that cyclingcould offer an affordablemeans of transport. That’swhat we want to instil in theyouth of King SabathaDalindyebo and teach themhow to use bicycles on theroad safely.
