THE death of yet another young man hasplaced the spotlight on a grim winter initia-tion season in the Eastern Cape.

Simphiwe Feni (19) of Bhencuti locality inQumbu is one of at least 26 initiates who didmake it home alive.

He died while was attending an initiationschool in Bhencuti, but his body was foundin an unused house in the locality. Seated onan old couch and covered by blankets, Sim-phiwe had terrible burn wounds as well aswounds to his upper body and buttocks.

“His buttocks were injured in such a waythat it would have been difficult to relievehimself,” said Chief Mncedisi Veco of Bhen-cuti.

The traditional surgeon who circumcised

him was arrested after failing to explain whySimphiwe had been left in the unused house. His aunt, Maxaba Sitshongo (68), expressedher agony over losing the boy who had beenso helpful to her and her elderly husband.

“I don’t know how I am going to look atthese boys who killed my son. Simphiwe waswell known and respectful of the whole locali-ty and the community can bear witness tothat. I really don’t know why he was killedso mercilessly,” she said. Simphiwe is expect-ed to be buried on Saturday, August 18, in hishome village of Bhencuti.

Meanwhile the Mhlontlo Initiation Fo-rum’s Nkosi Luyanda Mditshwa said eventhough the season was about to come to anend, they were still working around the clocktrying to save initiates.

On Thursday July 16, they arrested threeamakhankatha (traditional nurses) and one

ingcibi (traditional surgeon) in Shawbury.Hesaid the initiation season had been due toclose onMondayJuly 20, but due to the escala-tion in injured boys it had been extended un-til July 30. The forum would work until Au-gust 6, Mditshwa said.

“This is the worst season ever in the regionof OR Tambo, Mhlontlo in particular com-pared with last season.

“There has been deep sadness and concernabout the five deaths in Mhlontlo, consider-ing that there were no deaths in the previousseason.”

He added that most of the deaths had beencaused by assault at the initiation schools.

According to the provincial health depart-ment, many initiates are being treated forbotched circumcisions in hospital and rescuecentres in the OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo re-gions.

ARRIVE Alive has called on the public tohelp identify thedriver of aVWGolf that col-lided with a Greyhound bus on Sunday.

ling with two women, but we don’t knowwhere they ran to after the accident. It is dif-ficult to locate the owner of the car becauseit burnt to ashes,” Machaea said.

The accident report says the car was over-taking other vehicles when it collided head-on with the bus.

It was dragged by the bus for some metresand both vehicles burst into flames.

THE National Prosecuting Authority has ex-pressed its frustration with the lack of suc-cessful prosecutions of illegal traditional heal-ers.While illegal surgeons were common in the

OR Tambo region and particularly in Ngqele-ni, Libode, Tsolo, Qumbu and Eastern Pondo-land in the former Transkei, prosecuting theoffenders was almost impossible, said LuxoloTyali, the regional spokesperson for the Na-tional Prosecuting Authority (NPA).He told Express that the biggest challenge

was the lack of witnesses willing to assist in

the prosecution of illegal surgeons, even afterthey had been arrested.“No witnesses come to court. Not even the

affected initiates cooperate after the season isover and we cannot proceed with the casewithout evidence before court.”He said if this trend continued, botched cir-

cumcision cases were going nowhere. “Eventhe parents don’t cooperate or open cases afteran incident of botched circumcision.”He said the police were experiencing the

same frustration over cases being struck offthe court roll.

“Last year we charged Samkelo Mvubu ofLibode with two counts of murder after twoinitiates died at his initiation school. But thecasewas struckoff the court roll onJune 8 thisyear because the police were unable to getstatements from the witnesses,” he said. “Itwas not only that case. There are somany cas-es. That is our frustration in the NPA.”Tyali was reacting to an appeal from the

ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the EasternCape for the swift arrest of those involved inillegal or botched circumcisions. At least 26 initiates have died in the Eastern

Cape this winter season - more than in therest of the country. In a statement, theANCYL called for the im-

mediate arrest of the perpetrators and de-manded that they not be granted bail.ANCYL provincial spokesperson Ayongez-

wa Lungisa said the ANCYL would lead a “nobail” campaign against all the perpetrators.Lungisa said that theyouth leaguewasplan-

ning to meet traditional leaders and the gov-ernment to discuss solutions to the initiatedeath toll in the Eastern Cape.– SIMBONGILE MDLEDLE

THEDAsays the governmentmust accountfor every initiate who has died during thiswinter’s initiation season.

DA MP Nqaba Bhanga, who is also theparty’s spokesman on cooperative govern-ance, said the government had failed toachieve its own goal of curbing initiationdeaths.“This time last year, Minister Pravin

Gordhan said his department would workwith various role players to reach the objec-tive of zero death in the next initiation peri-od, but the recent news suggests that theminister’s approach toachieving thisgoal isfailing,” Bhanga said.During a visit to the StBarnabasHospital

in Libode last Thursday Bhanga said heknew that at the community level tradition-al leaders were trying their best, but itseemed the government was dragging itsfeet.“Weknow this is part of a verywell devel-

opedconversation that ishappening incom-munities who hold this tradition dear. Butwhile our boys are dying, the government

is clearly not doing what it promised to en-sure zero deaths.”He said he had also gone through initia-

tion in Port Elizabeth and his experiencehad been one of delight as he went throughthe cultural rite to becoming a man.“We never experienced the fear of death

as our youngmen do today. Our leaders ledus by example and the many great life les-sons I learnt during the process I still cher-ish today.”TheDAcalled onGordhan to report to the

portfolio committee on cooperative govern-ance and traditional affairs on the circum-stances which had led to the death of eachinitiate, the shortcomings of the task teamand provincial monitoring teams and whataction he would take to address the issuesbefore the2015/16summerinitiationperiod.“We call for law enforcement agencies to

vigorously investigate and prosecute thoseresponsible for these unnecessary deaths, including officials of government whoshould have prevented the conditions thatcaused death,” Bhanga said.– AYANDA MILLISA MADIKIZELA

WHILE some have welcomed an an-nouncement that construction of theN2Wild Coast toll road will commencenext year, theAmadibaCrisisCommit-tee is dead set against it.

Rural Development and Land Re-form Minister Gugile Nkwinti an-nounced last week that construction ofthe road would begin in Septembernext year.“Working with the traditional lead-

ers in the affected areas, we will haveto identify sites where we will buildhomes for thosewhowill be relocated,”Nkwinti said at an event in Mbizanarecently. He added that the governmentwould

also relocate graves that were in theway of the road.King Zanozuko Sigcau said the Pon-

doland community was very excitedabout the developments.“Wehavebeenwaiting for so long for

this project and the entire communityis eager for it, with anticipation of jobcreation,” the king said.In its response to Nkwinti’s an-

nouncement, theAmadibaCrisis Com-mittee (ACC) accused the minister ofpurposely excluding the people of Um-gungundlovu - who are to be relocated- from the meeting in Mbizana.“It makes no sense to hold this meet-

ing inMbizana. There isnoN2 toll roadplanned there. The N2 is planned forthe Amadiba coast,”the ACC said in astatement. The ACC also rejected arguments

that the community was poor and indire need of infrastructure such as atoll road.“How can we be poor when we have

land? We grow maize, sweet potatoes, yams, potatoes, onions, spinach, car-rots, lemons and guavas and we sellsome of it to the market. We fish andwe eat eggs and chicken. This agricul-ture is what should be developedhere.”The ACC further accused the gov-

ernment of deliberately allowing ac-cess roads to be washed away and thatthe road was ultimately intended formaking mining accessible.“But you push the N2 for the BMWs

of the rich. The N2 toll road on our an-cestral land is not for us and of courseit is not for tourists. It makes it fasterto drive from Durban to East London. It will support the plans for theAustra-lian company MRC for open-cast min-ing along this coast.”

HE has shared the stage with big namesin the music industry, co-hosts a week-end show and is a regular at variousnight spots. But as Mthatha’s Mthobeli“Deejay Mist-SA” Xabendlini will tellyou, success takes a lot of hard work.

The 19-year-old was born in Ngangeliz-we Township and like many a young “ka-si-boy”, he has seen the countless socialills associated with township life.“Obviously, I was exposed to various

unfavourable aspects of township living, but my inner man decided to explore adifferent approach to life.”He said his background had a positive

impact on his work ethic and the positiveenergy he brought to the task at hand.“There was a term that was frequently

used in eKasi. They used to say ixoxo nex-oxo liyaz’gxumela, which means everyman for himself. From it I learnt to beindependent.”Mthobeli started out very young and

has paid his dues in the entertainmentindustry.“At the age of 16, I shared a stage with

the industry’s most eminent and cele-brated DJs and artists like DJ Christos,Vini Da Vinci and DJ Sue.”As expected, it has not been all plain

sailing and Mthobeli has had his ownshare of misfortunes.“At one point doors were shut in front

of me, delaying my growth in music. I be-camemarginalised to such an extent thatI was denied opportunities.”To this day he doesn’t know why this

happened, but he persevered and sud-denly started getting invitations toshowcase his talent on national plat-forms.He got an opportunity to co-host the

Weekend Vibe show at Unitra Communi-ty Radio alongside DJ Master P.He has also landed a slot at the SoWhat

WILLIAM Mugeyi, a name synon-ymous with Eastern Cape soccer, has agreed to share his vast expe-rience with the WSU coachingstaff as technical adviser duringthis season’s Varsity Footballchallenge.

The former Zimbabwean inter-national and Bush Bucks leftback’s tactical and technical ex-pertise could prove significant asWSU aim to cause a few upsets ontheir way to a “fairy-tale” season– qualifying for the knockouts.

“I trust that I can contribute todeveloping and strengthening theteam in terms of the crucial as-

pects of the game that requirebrains rather than brawn. Mypart will be largely to impart thetactical and technical facets to theteam’s game,” Mugeyi said.

WSU head coach Alfred Kuchouwelcomed the news, saying Mug-eyi would help bolster the squadin terms of confidence and gameawareness.

He said the players would alsofeed off the professionalism andintensity he brought.

“William’s addition further sig-nifies for the players how seriousa task we have ahead of us, andhow important a tournament thisis. We won’t be there to make upnumbers – we will be competing,”Kuchou said.

WSU took on Mugeyi’s much-beloved Bush Bucks in twofriendly games on July 10 as partof the institution’s training camp.

This is where he started layingthe pieces of a foundation built ona footballing astuteness that willsee the team dismantle any oppo-sition.

“It was the perfect time for meto assess the team with just a fewdays to go before they take to thefield in their opener,” Mugeyisaid.

WALTER Sisulu University areset to enjoy at least three tele-vised matches during their debutseason in the FNB Varsity Foot-ball challenge which kicked offthis Monday.

Official broadcasters Super-sport are set to televise one of theseason’s most anticipated der-bies as WSU and NMMU clash atthe Mthatha campus on Thurs-day August 27 in an all-EasternCape affair.

The duel is preceded by anoth-

er home tie against the Vaal Uni-versity of Technology to be airedon August 17.

A trek down the south coastwill see Supersport on hand totelevise WSU’s match against theUniversity of the Western Cape(UWC) at the UWC SportsGround on Thursday August 6.

“The excitement among theboys is palpable. The prospect ofexhibiting their talents on livetelevision is something quite ex-hilarating for the whole team,”head coach Alfred Kuchou said.

A lunchtime kick-off in Butter-worth on Friday July 10 against

Bush Bucks has proven criticalin the WSU technical team’s taskof “tying up loose ends” just daysahead of the opener.

“In terms of fitness and condi-tioning, the boys are in superbshape. Their recent participationin a regional competition has tes-tified to this,” Kuchou said.

Centre-back and team captainZwide Nxumalo (23), a final-yearbusiness management student, said the tournament could pro-vide a lot of opportunities for theplayers.

“The importance of this tour-nament is not lost on the boys. Its

potential to provide great expo-sure and an opportunity to catchthe eyes of professional clubs issomething we’re all cognisantof.”

He said the team’s experiencein playing in the SAB league, with a couple of players plyingtheir trade in the VodacomLeague, could prove their biggestsource of match temperament.
