This according to the school’s principal, Zolisa Magaqa, who is proud of last year’s pass rate of 93.5% despite it slightly dropping from the 96% pass rate in 2013. The class of 2014 had 368 learners who sat for exams. A total of 344 passed with 240 ob- taining bachelors, 90 diplomas, 14 higher cer- tificates and three level 7 in all seven sub- jects. He said good discipline contributed a lot to the success of the school. “We have implemented a culture of teach- ing and learning in this school and we make sure that other grades have a strong founda- tion. “We also have an open door policy where- by every teacher has a right to express his or her view. St John’s College’s enrolment for 2015 is 1 938 with 467 being in Grade 12. Magaqa said they are confident that they will be improving their results this year. THE petrol price is falling so quickly that afurther reduction of R1 may be on the cards, according to economist Mike Schüssler ofeconomists.co.za.

“About two weeks ago I thought it woulddrop another 25 cents, then about a week agoit looked like it would be a 50 cents’ drop. Nowit is looking like a rand decline could becometrue,” he said.

“That would be the second R1 decline andwould bring the whole reduction to over R4or a saving of R580 per month for the averagemotorist.”

This will again boost consumer spending onother products and services, in his view.

“Notice how empty shops were just afterChristmas as products sold more than expect-ed. This would be close to 6% of formal sectordisposable salaries - that is take-home pay aft-er taxes and pensions, using BankservAfrica

data,” he explained.“Consumers will take this as another good

sign and if it were not for the power outages,I would estimate that this would have boostedthe gross domestic product (GDP) by 2% to2.5% by now. That is if it lasted for the wholeyear, of course.”

The BankServAfrica Disposable Salary In-dex shows that typical disposable salaries arestill just under R10 000 per month and the av-erage just over R12 000.

In his view what is now needed is to “getEskom going and get all politics out” of thepower utility.

Saijil Singh, lead analyst of Coface, the in-ternational credit insurer, says their projec-tions indicate another drop in petrol price isdefinitely on the cards, and a 50c reductionis a strong likelihood.

“There are various factors to consider hereand the prevalent one is definitely the dropin oil price. We must be careful, however, tonot ignore the reality of a very weak rand and

gains in a dollar-based commodity are not di-rectly translated locally,” he warned.

“Simply put, while the oil price has comedown by more than 50% in the last six months,it does not mean that consumers will see a50% fuel price reduction locally.”

Another factor to note, he pointed out, isthat Coface believes the current Brent priceto be an overreaction due to weakening de-mand from the US.

“We are further predicting the price to nor-malise around the $75 mark in the latter partof 2015,” he said.

“Overall, consumers should be gettingsome relief in the form on a fuel price cut lo-cally, but consumer confidence is still verylow and we should not expect this to immedi-ately translate into an increase in retailspend.”

In his view most consumers will be waryof a petrol price hike later in the year and cau-tious activity could definitely be expected.– Source: news24

THEMayor of theORTamboDistrictMunic-ipality Councillor Nomakhosazana Meth isurging Matrics of 2015 to take charge of theirstudies from the onset of the school year sothat they would be able to succeed at the endof the year.

Meth, who addressed learners at St John’sCollege in Mthatha during their first dayback at school, said it is important to startpaying attention from the start of the yearbecause it would ease the load towards the

end of the year.“Learners must not only start studying at

the end of the year, but they must also grab(hold of their studies) now,” she said.

The mayor also visited ZamukulungisaSenior Secondary School in Qweqwe nearMthatha on the first day of the new schoolyear.

She also held a meeting with the leadersof the schools. “We wanted to listen to theirproblems and see where we, as local govern-ment, can support and make some interven-tion if needed.”

She stressed that learners must make

friends with their books and stop getting in-volved in bad things that can negatively af-fect their future.

She congratulated the class of 2014 in theOR Tambo region and also expressed hergratitude to the Qumbu District for the bigimprovement in their matric results.

The pass rate in the Qumbu District im-proved from 50% to 70% in 2014 and shestressed that this year’s matric results mustimprove further.

In an endeavour to uplift the standard ofeducation in the region Meth and themunic-ipality will in partnership with Anglo Gold

Ashanti, host the Mayoral Best AchieversAwards in Mthatha Town Hall today (Janu-ary 29).

“We identified the number one school andnumber one learner and each will getR90 000, while the second placed will getR45 000,” said Meth.

She said they hoped that this would moti-vate each and every school and learner inthe region to work hard to get the prize mon-ey.

She called on teachers throughout the re-gion to make sure that learners’ foundationis very strong to prepare them for matric.

THE Nyandeni Local Municipality councilhas accepted the Auditor-General’s find-ings and has presented action plans to ad-dress all the matters raised by the AuditorGeneral (AG).

This was done at the council meetingheld in the Nyandeni Council Chamberslast Friday where Norman Minnaar fromthe AG’s office tabled findings concerningthe municipality’s properties, plants andequipments.

Minnaar said themunicipality was so fardoingwell but they needed to improve theirstandards in order to get a clean report.

“With assets one needs to be very accu-rate; hence they need tomake sure they bal-ance everything and to always maintainthe fixed asset register,” he said.

The report also reveals that the manage-ment had not yet depreciated the assetsthat were still in use for the current yearwith the total carrying value of R257 403.

Also in the report were the findings thatthe finance lease calculation balances donot agree to the balances disclosed in theannual financial statement.

Through the findings,Minnaar also high-lighted 6 tractors which are not in goodworking condition that had been parked atthe municipality for the past 3 years.

“These tractors have not been sent for re-pairs or maintenance and this has resultedin the fixed asset register being overstatedby the value of these tractors as these assetsrequire a write down,” said Minnaar.

NyandeniMayor Thoko Sokhanyile com-mitted the municipality to addressing allthe matters raised by the AG before June30 and to also require quarterly reportsfrom the management on the progressmade.

“We have recommended quarterly verifi-cation of assets in the fixed asset register, checking their conditions and performing

a detailed review of the assets,” said Sokhan-yile.

The mayor said they would also performa detailed review of the fixed asset registerto ensure that the disposals are correctly cal-culated and accounted for.

Internal Audit Committee ChairpersonSabatha Mbolekwa encouraged the munici-pality to work harder to stay on top of thegame.

“This is a commendable performance bythe management and the council and itmeans hard work,” said Mbolekwa.

He encouraged the council to continue do-ing good and correcting work highlighted bytheAG, reminding them to always count reg-ularly, dispose and depreciate.

Nyandeni has action plans toaddress Auditor-General findings

Qoboshiyane said the re-openinglaunches the three-year agricultural di-ploma that will start off with the dippingand castration of livestock.

“TARDI has been processing student ap-plications from interested students, someof whom have since been admitted tostudy at the Institute,” said MEC.

He said that the diploma will equip allprovincial animal health practitionerswith professional knowledge to help curblivestock parasites, control state con-trolled diseases, and provide veterinaryextension and advisory services to com-munities.

“Owing to the cases of rabies and otheranimal diseases prevalent in their areas, the first group of students hails from Al-fred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, Joe Gqa-bi and OR Tambo district municipalities.”

The MEC highlighted that quality ani-mal healthcare was critically importantto the economy of the province becauseagriculture was one of its main economicdrivers, and a major contributor to its do-mestic product.

The first group of 30 students had beenaccredited by the South African Veteri-nary Council (SAVC) to study a bridgecourse for 18 months, considering theiraccredited diploma in animal production.

The Department of Agriculture, Forest-ry and Fisheries also handed over a veter-inary clinic to the Institute.

BUTTERWORTH United FC punished theirneighbours Green Lovers FC with five goalsto zero during their SAB Regional Leaguegame.

The match was played in hot weather con-ditions atMsobomvu Sports ground last Sat-urday.

After their humiliating defeat to the visi-tors, GreenLovers coachGoldenNguqu saidthey played very well but their goalkeepermade somemistakes which resulted in themhaving to pay the price.

“I really don’t know what went wrongwith our goalkeeper today because he usedto make great saves and he is a good goal-keeper.

“But todayhe conceded three unnecessarygoals. We did not deserve to lose the gamebecause we created a lot of chances but un-fortunately we could not manage to convert

those opportunities into goals,” said Nguqu. He added that they started the game with

young players in order to test them and give-them a chance.

He urged community members to supportsoccer and to come in numbers to thegrounds to watch the games as this wouldencourage the young players a lot.

Butterworth united FC bossMzwamadodaSinyanya said his team maintained theirgame planwhichwas 4-3-3. They used highlyskilled strikers upfront with the aim of scor-ing goals and they were equal to the task.

“Before the match we told our midfieldersto pass the ball quickly to the strikers so thatwe could outrun Green Lovers’ defendersand punish them, and they did exactly whatwe told them.”

He said he was happy with a win but wasdisappointed with the turnout at the stadi-um. He said he would like to see people sup-porting the games and coming in numbersto the stadium.
