Thepass rate of the school was less than 10% ina row.“We want to go there and check why this

school is not improving in this percentage,”said the department spokesman MalibongweMtima. Mtima also stressed that his depart-ment is ready because everything is in place

including the school learning material. FromCentane on Thursday the delegation proceed-ed toMthathawhere they visited a few schoolsbeforeattending theofficial openingofMande-la School of Technology inMvezo. “We startedearly to deliver the required material so thatas soon as the schools open the teachers muststart to teach the pupils,” said Mtima. He said if is there any school that is left be-

WALTER Sisulu University (WSU) has madeit clear that it will not accept walk-in applica-tions as their duedate for applicationswas late

last year. The only exception where late appli-cations will be considered is for programmeswhich still have vacancies.

University spokeswoman Angela Church

said theuniversity is only able to accommodateabout 7 000 first year students in 2014.“We’vereceivedover20 000applications from

first year students for 7 000 places and many ofthese applicants do not meet the minimum en-

trance requirements as their resultsare below the required standards. Ourapplications closed on December 20,2013. However, we may accept late ap-plicants where there are vacancies inparticular programmes. Matriculantswithgoodmathematics, science andac-counting results may be considered forsuch programmes,” said Church.Church encouraged prospective stu-

dents not to wait for the last minute toapply and that they should apply earlyat the university to secure a place forthe following academic year.“Students shouldapplyearly tostudy

at WSU. Usually our applications closeon October 31 each year, but last yearwe extended the deadline owing to therevised academic calendar to cater forlost time,” said Church.

AS the class of 2013 – thousands of them newlyarmed with Bachelor’s passes – scramble to se-cure a space at universities and colleges, an edu-cation expert has warned prospective studentsto ensure they carefully scrutinise institutionsbefore signing up.

“Thousandsofnewlymatriculatedyoungpeo-ple are being turned away at universities due tospace constraints. It is encouraging to see somanyprospectivestudents includeprivatehigh-er and further education institutions as theyconsider alternatives. It is most regrettable thattherearestill someunscrupulouspeopleexploit-ing students’ difficult situation, for fraudulentand selfish financial gain,” says Dr FelicityCoughlan, Director of the Independent Institute

of Education (IIE).TheIIEisSA’s largestandmostaccreditedpri-

vatehighereducation institution, andCoughlannotesthatprivateinstitutionsarerequiredtoad-here to the same rigorous quality assuranceprocesses as state universities - meaning that ifyou register at the right private institution youare able to gain a qualification of equal standingand quality. Most private institutions operating through-

out the country are registered and accreditedand almost all offer a viable alternative for stu-dents seeking a post-school study opportunity, but the actions of some taint the whole sector,Coughlan says. “Students unfortunately do notseem to realise just how easy it is to check thecredentials of private institutionsand thusdenythemselves the protection of being sure aboutthe status of the institution – and therefore the

qualification – they are choosing,” she says.“All the key information about the registra-

tion of an institution is available in the RegisterofPrivateHigherEducation Institutionskeptbythe Department of Higher Education and Train-ing,and the information isalsoreadilyavailablefrom reputable institutions.”Additionally, there are ways students can -

andshould–interrogateinstitutionsbeforepart-ing with any money.“Therearea fewkeyquestions toask towhich

thereare somesimpleanswers, and if an institu-tion is able to respond appropriately, it is worthconsidering,” she says. Before signing up, ask the institution:• To show you their certificate of registration

with the Department of Higher Education. Itshoulddetail the campus, provider and thequal-ifications offered. No certificate – no go.

•Allhighereducationqualificationsneedtobeaccredited by the Higher Education QualityCommittee of the Council on Higher Education– if they are not accredited they will not appearon the certificate referred to above. There is noother document detailing the accreditationwhich is why checking if the qualification is onthe certificate is an essential step.• All qualifications must be registered on the

NQF by SAQA and students should ask for theSAQA NQF identity numbers.“Students eager to sign up in the current cli-

mate where spaces at tertiary institutions arescarce may be tempted to forego this little bit ofadditional hassle,” says Coughlan.“By taking the time to ask these simple ques-

tions, you contribute to strengthening the pri-vate higher education sector bymaking it hard-er for scamsters to continue to operate.”

A COUR case that dragged on for almosteight years eventually came to an end atMt-hatha magistrate court recently whilst thecourt convicted the Booi brothers on bothcounts of assault with G.B.H and maliciousdamage of property.

“Even though the case was finalized at lastI’mdisappointedwiththejusticesystemofMt-hatha that the casedraggedon for sucha longtime. I had to do a written representation inorder for the case to start. What about some-body who does not have a clue how to followthe channels that I followed during this case?“The justice system in Mthatha needs to

beoverhauledbecausemanypeoplewill endup becoming the victims of law breakers be-causethe justicesystemof this towndoesnotact accordingly.“Howtheircases justdisappearbecauseof

the negligence of the justice in this town orbecause of dragging of cases like this one?”asked Mafunda.National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)

AS if being raped and being paralysed afterwards wasn’tenough of a traumatic ordeal for a gogo of Lusikisiki, shehas to see her alleged attacker walking around freely de-spite reporting him to the police.

Gogo Mabhengu Mkhwenkwe (69) ofBuhlanyanga location in Lusikisikiwas allegedly raped by a local man infront of her 8-year-old grandson in Octo-ber 2012.

The perpetrator was arrested but wasreleased. Now he is often seen roamingthe streets of the locality drinking skalsof umqombothi (traditional brews) dur-ing traditional ceremonies.

After the ordeal, Gogo Mabhengu lostthe use of her legs and she had now hasto crawl to move around. This has ledto big sores on her left knee.

“I do not know why he was releasedbecause I told the whole story to the po-lice and I assured them that I know theperpetrator. But I have never beencalled to testify in court. What I see eve-ryday is my rapist and that brings backthememoryofhimstranglingand suffo-cating me. It was a pain I had never tast-ed before in my life,” said Mabhengu.

After that ordeal she was unable tomove her legs and that was when shestarted crawling. Fortunately for her,Ibandla LaseMthini assisted her with awheelchair which they delivered to her home in Lusik-isiki. This faith organization also donated a tank, toiletand groceries as she is living in very poor conditions andonly has a government grant she can depend on.

Another problem which Gogo Mabhengu is facing isthat everytime she receivesher government grantmoneyshe has to pay the loan shark from where she borrowedmoney after the death of her three children. She said shewas compelled to borrow money from the loan shark inorder to bury them.

During the visit of Ibandla LaseMthini at Gogo Mab-hengu’s place, there were representatives from IngquzaLocalMunicipality ledby theMayorhimself andhemadethe pledge to look after the Gogo and said the municipali-ty was not aware of the condition of the old woman.

Some business alliances who were present during thevisit to the old woman’s home asked herto stop paying her debts to the loansharks as they promised to sort themout. But this has never happened andthe bed she was promised was never de-livered.

“They put me deep in debts becausethe loan sharks came to me saying thatno one came as they promised,” said Go-go. Now gogo had to pay all the accrueddebts.

“They put me in big trouble becausenow people come to me demanding theirmoney. As a result of this I’m starvingand my children are too,” she said.

When Express arrived in her homeshe was in a garden trying to get indige-nous vegetable called ‘unomdlomboyi’in order to put something on the tablefor her grandchildren. Even the housethey were promised by the Departmentof Human Settlement and a certain com-pany was still not in place.

Attempts by Express to get commentsfrom the Department of Human Settle-ment in the Eastern Cape and the com-pany that promised her a house, werefruitless.

Tsepo Machaea of Ibandla LaseMthini agreed thatthere were many institutions who pledged their help onthe day of their visit to the old woman’s home.

“I’m going to follow the issue up because even the per-son whom we asked to look at the issue of Gogo had neverreported to me what you are telling me,” said Machaeawho also confirmed that there were two houses that werepromised to Gogo.

When Express contacted the police, they were not surewhy the perpetrator was released from prison.

BETTIE GILIOMEE

AT the end of last year Nissan launched newmodels in its Almera and Sentra range withthe two basically switching places in theJapanese manufacturer’s range of models.

The redesigned Almera is now competingin the smaller B-segment of the market forcompact family cars while the new Sentratakes on the C-segment. (See next week’sedition for more on the new Sentra.)Competitors of the new Almera, which is

built in Chennai, India, and aimed at thirdworld markets (and their poor road condi-tions), include the VW Polo Vivo, HyundaiAccent and Chevrolet Sonic. With its name originating from the Span-

ishword “almendra - big diamond” the Alm-era will prove popular among especiallyyoung famlies, who need the extra spaceand practicality that this family sedan of-fers at an affordable price, or as Nissansays: Big on Car, Small on Price. Available

in one model grade, the new Almera 1.5Acenta is available inmanual and automat-ic and retails for R165 000 and R175 500 re-spectively.

ExteriorA large exterior combined with a spa-

cious interior and boot are three of the bigfeatures of the Almera. In the looks department the Almera will

not exactly turn heads, but it is also not oneof those cars that you either like or dislike. It basically just looks like a practical, con-servative family sedan.

InteriorBut practical is a good thing – something

which the Almera is big on literally. Theback seat passengers will, especially, ap-preciate the big rear legroom. Not to men-tion the extra two air vents for the rear seatpassengers with a dedicated, independentfan speed control.New parents will be overjoyed with the

fact that their luggage will also be able togo with on a holiday after all baby’s thingsare packed in.The upholstery is a durable black and

grey cloth combination, with interior pan-els finished in black.

Ride:The new Nissan Almera is available with

a 1.5-litre petrol engine. According to Nis-san, the low-emission and efficient engineallows the five-speed manual version of thenew Nissan Almera to achieve a claimedaverage combined cycle fuel economy of6.3-litres per 100 km, the four-speed auto-matic variant achieving 7.2.It will not exactly burn rubber on the

mom’s taxi route, but it sure has enoughpower and juice to take the family and theircargo comfortably on the long road.

SafetySafety equipment comprises ABS with

EBD and BAS, two airbags, five three-pointseat belts, ISOFIX child seat anchor points,

a third brake light and an immobiliser.

Features:Apart from being big in size, the Almera

is truly big on features for a vehicle in itsprice range. We have alreadymentioned theseparate air vents for the rear passengers, but also impressive are the audio controlson the steering wheel, speed-sensitive auto-locking doors and a comprehensive tripcomputer. It also features remote central locking,

electric door mirrors, a radio/CD/MP3 au-dio system with aux input port, four speak-ers, a height-adjustable driver’s seat andtilt adjustment for the steering wheel - quitean impressive list.

Price:The all-newNissan Almera range is avail-

able as standard with a 3-year/60 000kmservice plan and Nissan’s 3-year/100 00 kmwarranty. Service intervals are 15 000km.Almera 1.5 Acenta Manual R165 000Almera 1.5 Acenta Automatic R175 500

NETBALL players from the Upper Falakah-la Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Du-tywa kept the name of the Eastern Cape

Province high, as they got into category3 during a national tournament held inBloemfontein.

GREG NOTA

AMAMPONDO United FC failed to capitaliseon home advantage and they were beaten 2-0by Buffalo City from East London during theNedbank Knockout Cup final at the NewrestStadium in Lusikisiki recently.

The Buffalo City will represent the EasternCape Province in the last 32 Nedbank Knock-out competition and theywill be playingwiththe clubs from the Premier Soccer and Pro-motional Leagues nationally.

The game was the deciding game for theteam to represent EC, since AmampondoUnited FC were the winners of the SAB Re-gional League whilst Buffalo City were thewinners of the Vodacom League.

The game was controlled mostly by Amam-pondo during the first half.

Spectators who came out in numbers towatch the game, were pleased when theirteam, Amampondo, scored their first goalduring the first half.

The United’s defence which was strongduring the beginning stages of the game, be-cameweakandshowed tiredness towards thedying minutes of the first half.

This nearly opened an opportunity for Buf-faloCity to equalizebut thanks to goalkeeper,Nkosinathi Lunika, who made tremendoussaves, the score was kept at 1-0 during thefirst half.

Despite Amampondo playing entertainingfootball and displaying good dribbling and

ball distribution skills, experience seemed tocome out trumps as Buffalo City, who is play-ing in ahigher league thanAmampondo, con-trolled the second half of the game. Withinthe first fifteen minutes they managed toequalize.

This was after the Amampondo midfielderand the captain, Lethu Simayi, had to leavethe field due to a shoulder injurywhich creat-ed a huge void in the midfield. Amampondoplayers seemed to lose the gameplanandBuf-falo City took charge of the game.

The game went on to extra time when bothteams failed to capitalize on the opportunitesthey had, but unfortunately for the Amam-pondo their defender scored an own goalwhen a cross from Buffalo City striker hithim whilst he was trying to clear the ball. That sent the goalkeeper, Lunika, in thewrong direction and the ball ended behindthe net which gave Buffalo City victory andthe full time score was 2-1.

Buffalo City will be representing the EC inthe national Nedbank KO Cup. AmampondoUnited FC have themselves to blame by notwinning the game as their strikers failed tocapitalize on the opportunities they got, espe-cially during the first half as they controlledthe game.

Towards the last minutes of the second halfthey had obvious scoring opportunities buttheir striker missed about four times whichmade supporters call for a substitution. Thiswas not done since the striker they were un-happy about had replaced Simayi.

Amampondo ’gives’ title away

ern Cape Schools Netball, Singathwa Magi-da, these players made them proud becausethey showed a lot of dedication participatingat national level.

“Upper Falakahla’s team was trained by

well qualified netball and the Departmentof Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture sup-plied us with coaches who have goodknowledge of netball to ensure that ourteam perform.”

The three teams who represented theEastern Cape were Under 13-team UpperFalakahla, Under 14-team of HumansdorpHigh School and Under 13 from Port Eliza-beth.
