The Qunu-born anti-apart- heid revolutionary, politician and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, would have celebrated his 96th birthday to- morrow. July 18, has been celebrated as Madiba Day for some years now, when people from around the world are asked to take 67 minutes of their time to do something for the greater good of society. The Nelson Mandela Muse- um in Qunu, marked the birth of Nelson Mandela by lighting a torch symbolising his stature at his ‘Humble Beginnings’ in Qunu last week. According to Qunu Museum Chaiperson, Nozuko Yokwana, the flame symbolises a pledge by the Nelson Mandela Muse- um Council, management and staff to honour and continue to preserve the legacy of the inter- nationally renowned states- man, the son of the soil, and fa- ther of democracy, Nelson Mandela. Yokwana said the lighting ceremony also marked the launch of the Nelson Mandela month (July) and added that the flame would be kept burning for the entire month. “We call on every South African citizen and those abroad to spend 67 minutes of their time to do some- thing good and also to encourage the next generation to take leadership forward and to be patriotic,” said Yokwana. The programmes here will revolve around the three special women in Nelson Mandela’s life, name- ly the first wife of Nelson Mandela, Mama Evelyn Mase Mandela, Mama Nomzamo Winnie Mandela and Mama Graca Machel. Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Nelson Man- dela Museum, Noel Solani, said their programme in- cluded an outreach which took place on July 11 at the Qutubeni and Madladle- ni villages in Ngcobo where Mama Mase was born. In Mbizana, Madikizela Mandela’s birthplace, the Mngomazi pre-school was refurbished and an outreach to Hlabe homestead in Mbongweni locality in Mbi- zana was done on July 15. Owing to limited resourc- es, the museum said they could not afford to go over to Mozambique where Mama Machel was born, but said their hearts were with her family during this month. Preservation of historical buildings will also be done, using traditional earth ma- terials at Mqhekezweni, where Mandela spent most of his younger years. The Regent Jongintaba’s Memo- rial will be unveiled at Mqhekezweni Great Place this month. Nelson Mandela’s grand- son, Ndaba Mandela, said the family would also engage in numerous activities to honour Tata’s day. “Our family is very big; so that means many initiatives, including a visit to a Chil- dren’s Home in Johannesburg, led by my cousin Zole- ka. On my side, I will be leading an initiative to col- lect books in indigenous languages to be handed over here at the Qunu museum to benefit the local youth,” said Ndaba. Madiba passed away on December 5, last year and his remains were brought to his home town in the former Transkei. THE South African National Blood Service(SANBS)has beenhardatwork ensuring thata blood shortage is avoided.

However, with all efforts in place, it seemedthe cold weather was keeping donors away.SANBS Communications Manager, Vanes-

sa Raju, said traditionally the winter monthswere difficult, owing to schools and universi-ties being on holiday. Illnesses such as the flualso had a great impact on blood collection, placing the SANBS under immense pressureto collect safe and good quality blood prod-ucts.Raju said the SANBS needed to maintain

a blood stock level of 5 days supply at alltimes, by collecting 3000 units of blood perday, to meet the demand of the thousands ofpatients who are reliant on blood transfu-sions for their survival.“At the moment we have only 1.5 days of

blood stock available nationally. It is onlywith the help of selfless blood donors that wecan ensure that patients who are reliant on

blood transfusions will be able to receivethem,” said Raju. She added that the SANBS was appealing

to people – particularly to their regular do-nors – not tomiss out on their next donationdate. They also urge other members of the pub-

lic, whomeet theminimum requirements tobecome blood donors, to help boost suppliesby committing to donating blood.

WOMEN had to hide their children fromwitnessing a dreadful attack on aman (25)whowas stoned and beaten to death in theJoeSlovohuman settlement inLusikisiki, inwhatwas described as a revenge attack.

The incident took place on Wednesday,July 9, and itwas alleged that the deceasedwas attacked by the fuming communitymembers. The incident happened after the victim

had been released from custody. He wasarrested for allegedly stabbing anotherman from the same locality in the stom-ach. The man died on the scene.According to an eyewitness, the man

was dragged on the streets of Joe Slovo, stoned, stabbed and beaten until hedied.“Hewas soaked inblood, but no onewas

showing any mercy or willing to help,”said the eyewitness who refused to dis-close his name.

Last week the man was released fromcustody and that was when members ofthe community gathered, approached theman and took him from his house beforestoning him to death.Lusikisiki police spokesperson, Cap-

tain Mduduzi Godlwana, confirmed theincident and lashed out at members of thecommunity for taking the law into theirown hands. He said people should not fight crime

with crime, because they end up beingcriminals themselves.Godlwana called on residents to come

forward and give evidence of what hadhappened in front of them.He said the justice system had released

the accused, because there was no evi-dence directly linking him with the kill-ing of the man who was stabbed in thestomach.Godlwana said no arrests had been

made, but that the police were workingaround the clock looking for the perpetra-tors.

MTHATHA traditional surgeon, QaqambileSiyongwana, has been running an initiationschool here, since 2009 and, according to him,has never had any deaths as a result of initia-tion-related procedures.

Siyongwana describes initiate deaths ow-ing to circumcision as “completely unneces-sary” and feels that these deaths could be pre-vented.

At the time of going to print, at least 32 initi-ates had died in the Eastern Cape.

Apart from the fatalities during this year’swinter initiation season, at least 131 initiateshad been hospitalised, while scores of othersare being kept at rescue centres throughout

the province.According to Siyongwana, everything de-

pended on the traditional surgeon’s respectand honour for his work. He said it was alsoextremely important for parents to be in-volved throughout the initiation process.

“Parents must take the time to check outthe place where their children would be cir-cumcised. They should never just give moneyto a surgeon and then take a back seat,” hesaid.

A number of illegal initiation schools hadbeen closed down, while a number of illegaltraditional surgeons had been arrested in thePondoland region.

Siyongwana, who had 37 initiates this year, said there should be open communication be-tween the surgeon and his traditional nurses(amakhankatha). According to him, stran-

gers should not be allowed to visit the initi-ates. “The only people who should be allowedto visit, are relatives who need not spend along time at ‘ebhomeni’ (initiation school).”

Proper behaviour at initiation schools wasalso highlighted by Siyongwana. “Thereshould be no smoking or drinking of alcohol. The traditional surgeons must closely ob-serve their boys and create a platform whereinitiates are able to express themselves, sothat it would be easy to sense if there was aproblem which affected any of the initiates.”He said there should always be an open com-munication channel between surgeonand ini-tiates and that surgeons had to teach initiatesabout the passage to manhood.

He stressed that surgeons should have apassion to perform the custom and not do itfor the money. According to him, traditional

leaders should allow legal surgeons to openinitiation schools in their areas.

During the provincial initiation launch inMthatha Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzimastressed his discontent over the traditionalsurgeons who conducted circumcisions whiledrunk. Spokesperson for the Department ofTraditional Affairs, Mamkeli Ngam, said res-cue centres played a cardinal role in the re-duction of a number of deaths.

He said a summit on circumcision in theEastern Cape would be held in September, with the aim of reducing the high death rate.

. Siyongwana entered ubungcibi after twoboys on his rugby team at Excesior SeniorSecondary School died during circumcision. He then decided to intervene, following in thefootsteps of his grandfather, Duma ‘Sandav-eyisi’ Oliver Makhalima.

Everything looks more advanced than itdid ten or twenty years ago.

“For someone who had just been re-leased from prison, it would be hard to ad-just, because even drafting a CV would bea challenge, owing to the latest requiredformats,” said Tiyane.

AFTER nearly missing an opportunity to per-form at the National Arts Festival in Graham-stown due to lack of funding, aMdantsane thea-tre group produced a sterling performance atthis year’s festival.

“Coming Home” is an emotional and contro-versial play that tells thestory of a young tradi-tionalhealerwhogetsex-pelled fromher home be-cause of herbeliefs in an-cestors.Hermother is adevout

and a born again Chris-tian who refuses to ac-cept that her daughter isa traditional healer andfollowing long argu-ments and disagree-ments the young sangoma is thrown out of herhome by her own mother. In the play Mdantsane-born Phelisa Dolly

Jacobs plays Anelisa, the troubled young tradi-tional healer and Noniko Mabhovula plays therole of Kwandiswa, a dedicated Christian whobelieves that anything contrary to her beliefs,is witchcraft. The entire cast of “Coming Home” is made of

a group of young and talented performers fromthedusty streets ofMdantsane townshipknown

for producing world boxing champions. The play is written and produced by Xolani

Makwedini and directed by Thulani Simon.Makwedini nearly missed an opportunity totakehis play to this year’s prestigiousGraham-stownNationalArtsFestivalduetolackof fund-ing.He said they applied for funding but were

turned down; however at the last minute hemanaged to get some fi-nancial backing whichenabled him to take hisgroup to perform at thefestival.“I think through

“Coming Home” wemade our mark and weleft the audience askingfor more,” said Mak-wedini.He thanked the peo-

ple of Mdantsane fortheir continued support and now plans to takehis play to other national arts and theatreevents and several tours around Mdantsaneschools. Makwedini who was born in a remoterural area in Tsholomnqa outside East Londonsaid he wants to teach African people abouttheir identity, traditions and customs in orderfor them to remember their roots. He praised choreographer Phumzile Zakaza,

a former Guild Theatre dancer, for his positivecontribution to make the play a success.

THE Honda Accord is the flagship of HondaAutomotive, and the latest derivative manu-factured in Thailand to US specification is allnew from the ground up.I have been fortunate to have been able to

attend all three of the Honda Accord modellaunches held here in 2001, 2011 and 2014, andhave witnessed the enormous progress thatHonda has made and the technological inno-vations that have been installed in thesemod-els through the years.Honda is an incredible success story as a

manufacturer of motor cars, motorcycles, power plants and now executive jets. Thefirst production jet has just rolled off the lineand will cost about $4 million. The Accord model is the best seller of all

time of the Honda range with 41% of all Hon-das sold in theUSA.Althoughnot too popularyet in SA, the Accord has over 17 millionunits on the planet and is sold in over 140countries. Honda is also very environmental-

ly aware and all products adhere strongly toglobal principles. The absolutely iconic S2000sports carwas discontinued due to being una-ble to adhere to emission controls. The new Accord has grown in size and is

completely new, including the engines, gear-boxes and suspension. It was therefore fittingto base the launch of the new Accord at thesuper luxurious 6-star “One and Only” hotelat the waterfront in Cape Town. The new Ac-cord will be a worthy competitor to BMW,Mercedes, Audi and Lexus with regard toquality, luxury and performance. It is packed with features such as adaptive

cruise control, and lane watch blind spot dis-play (LBD) which uses a camera to displaya view of the passenger side roadway, togeth-er with a collision braking warning systemwith a new audible and visual feature alongwith the lane keeping assist system, whichalso uses visual and audio to alert the driver.I am a fan of cruise control systems which

are the best way to avoid speed traps abound-ing all over the country today, to replenishstate coffers. The Honda Accord is fitted withthe most sophisticated adaptive cruise con-trol which regulates your distance behindthe traffic ahead. In fact, the cars are loadedwith a myriad of safety features too numer-ous to mention here.A first forHonda is the all newActiveNoise

Cancellation system (ANC) which uses mi-crophones, signal processors and the onboard speakers to counteract unwanted exte-rior sounds such as wind, road and tyrenoise. The venue for the launch was based intheWestern Cape as the roads and the beauti-ful scenery there provide a perfect stage totest the ride and road holding characteris-tics. We commenced our test drive in the V6which is powered by the most awesome 3,5litre V6 engine coupled to a six-speed auto-matic gearbox supplemented by paddles onthe steering wheel. Developing 205 kW this

model provides sports car performancereaching the benchmark 0-100 in 7.2 seconds, whilst top speed is limited to 200 km/h.Our next car to test drive was the 2.0 litre

Elegance equipped with a 5-speed automaticgearbox. This model is the best of the lot; ithas slightly less performance than the 2,4 li-tre model but provides an all round lighterfeeling to the steering. Economically speak-ing, price and frugal fuel consumption willprove this model to be leader in sales.

.VERDICT: Quality is the name of thegame with Honda and we were really im-pressedwith thewhole range of the new cars.We are extremely happy to report that Hondahave dropped the manual gearbox from thisrange; only the automatic 5-speed and 6-speedare now available as standard. Modern auto-matic gearboxes do not result in excess fuelconsumption or reduce performance at all.Allmodels have full size sparewheels aswell, which is a very desirable feature.

The Honda Accord is aworthy “D” segmentcompetitor and is poised toknock the likes of BMW,Mercedes, Audi and Lexusfrom their pedestals.

FOLLOWING the success of an annual foot-ball tournament hosted by the QokolweniSport and Recreation Hub, the establishmentof a new local football association (LFA) is inthe pipeline for Qokolweni.

The increase in the number of teams partic-ipating in this tournament prompted the lead-ership of this hub to think twice. The tourna-ment forms part of an initiative to keep theyouth busy and away from drugs and to stopwandering the streets, doing nothing. The hub recently hosted soccer and netball

tournaments, which included information

sharing between government departments, intitutions and the youth. Owing to the suc-cess of this tournament, the committee hascome up with an idea to form a local footballassociation, in order to involve more teamsin a competitive league.According to publicist and liaison officer

of the hub, Sivuyile Mchunu, the reason forthe proposed new association was to accom-modate those teams that were unable totravel to the KSD Football league becauseof distance.“Yes, we do have a team which plays in

theKSD league, butweneed todevelopmoreclubs back at home to join Napoli in theleague. Qokolweni is a big area consisting

Nine provinces participated in the tour-nament and the Eastern Cape swept thefloor with the other teams, scooping upfirst position with 6 gold, 4 silver and 3bronze medals, as well as a number of tro-phies. the Eastern Cape team’s coach, Mqanduliborn Mthetho Dumezweni, expressed hisgratitude towards the boxers for puttingthe Eastern Cape on the map.“Our secret to success was a solid team.

Wehave an abundance of talentwithin theprovince, which made it easy to select astrong team.“That alone shows that this province is

growing in boxing. I would like to thankthe boys for showing character and for re-storing the dignity of boxing in the East-ern Cape. As you know, the Eastern Capeis regarded coutry-wide at the ‘home ofboxing.’”He said since the teamhad been assisted

by the academy in Port Elizabeth, theacademy had advised that the same teamshould be kept for next year’s tournament. The Eastern Cape team is expected to starta training camp during the first week inOctober.

THEVicePresident of theSouthAfricanFoot-ball Association (Safa), Elvis Shishane, hasannounced – during a recent visit to Libode– that Safawould be giving theMthatha Stadi-um a financial injection to make it a fullyfunctional facility.

The Mthatha Stadium was built in 2010, asone of the base centres for some squads thatwere camping in the Eastern Cape to partici-pate in the 2010World Cup, but unfortunatelyno club had used the stadium. Even after theworld cup, the stadiumhad not been used, un-til Blackburn Rovers entered into negotia-tions with the KSDmunicipality to host someof its home games here. The Rovers played a few of their games in

the stadium, before the club was bought bya businessman from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)last season. Since the club was now hostingits homegames inKZN, theMthathaStadiumhas once again become a white elephant.

“There is noway that such a beautiful facil-ity could be a white elephant while there isan abundance of talent in the region, as wellas thousands of soccer-hungry supporters.“I put my neck on the block that Safa will

contribute to ensure that the stadium is use-ful,” said Shishane. He stressed that hewould address the issue

with Safa’s executive committee and wouldemphasise that the stadium should be usedto benefit the people of the OR Tambo regionas per the initiatives launched prior to the2010 soccer world cup.Safa’s President in the OR Tambo region,

Xolile Nkompela, revealed that he had a vi-sion for the stadium. He said it was his mis-sion to host big clubs in the near future andyoung squads from the South Africa FootballAssociation.
