THE Joe Gqabi District Municipality has de-nied that the contamination of Ugie’s waterwas caused by the protests which have hadthe town under siege since last month.

Ugie was rocked by the protests, which sawthe R66 road entering Ugie being blocked andpine forests set alight.Municipal spokesman Mandla Gceya said:

“It hasnothing to dowith the protests.Wewill

deploy technicians fromGauteng at all fillingstations in Ugie to trace the source of thisspilling of oil and diesel into the water.”Gceya’s response followedanumberof com-

plaints by residents about a fuel odour com-ing from the water. The water service provider, Joe Gqabi, and

the municipal health services section con-ducted an investigation and after samplingthe water discovered a layer of an organicsubstance floating on the water of the reser-voirs and in the Wildebeest River.

Gqabi said the investigations showed thatthewater had probably been contaminated byoil seeping through a stormwater pipe neara petrol station.Usedmotor oil was usually stored in plastic

tanks, but investigations showed that thetanks had probably overflowed into thestormwater system, and the river had thenbeen contaminated. This water was abstracted and processed

throughtheUgieBlueDrop-accreditedwatertreat-ment plant and distributed to the community.

Gceya said themunicipalityhaddispatchedeight trucks to distribute clean water in theUgie area.“We are still busy cleaning the water and

we are appealing to community members notto drink the water, even if it is boiled,” saidGceya.“Residents can use the water for flushing

and doing washing, but should not drink it.There are no reports of waterborne diseases.”He said it would probably take between five

and 10 days to clean the system.

THE DA has called in the Eastern CapeLegislature for the MEC for Transport,Weziwe Tikana, to sort out the red tapeholding up the introduction of 24-hour lawenforcement on the province’s roads.

The DA’s appeal follows the two horrific

accidents that claimed 46 lives in the prov-ince last week. The worst accident occurred at Nkele-

kethe village, Willowvale, last Saturdaywhen the driver lost control of a bus, which crashed, killing 36 people. In anoth-er accident, 10 people died near Cradockon their way to a funeral in Queenstown.Arrive Alive spokesperson Tsepo Ma-

chaea said the taxi they were travelling inhad burst a tyre and crashed. The DA’s Marshall von Buchenroder

said a shift system needed to get up andrunning with immediate effect to imple-ment the long overdue 24-hour law en-forcement on Eastern Cape roads in orderto reduce horror accidents such as theones experienced at the weekend.

“On behalf of the DA, I would like to ex-press my deepest condolences to the fami-lies who lost loved ones in the tragic acci-dents inWillowvale and Cradock. We wishGod’s richest blessings and speedy recov-ery for the victims who are in hospital,”he said. LECTURERS from the variousuniversities across the countrykicked off thought-provokingdiscussions about foundationalprovisioning at a two-day collo-quiumhosted by theWalter Sisu-lu University (WSU) and the Uni-versity of Fort Hare (UFH) inEast London last week.

Addressing the delegates,Rhodes University dean of teach-ing and learning ProfessorChrissie Boughey said socialawareness and accountabilitymust become the key principleand approach in South Africanuniversities’ administering ofhigher education to their stu-dents.Boughey said maintaining the

“decontextualized learner” ap-proach to teaching in South Afri-ca only benefited the privilegedwhite middle class, who contin-ued to excel because of their ad-vantaged backgrounds.“The decontextualized ap-

proach works with that whichwe’re naturally born with – ourinherent abilities; naturalsmarts; innate or inborn confi-dence as human beings,” shesaid.“Besides the natural distribu-

tion of these traits, the privilegedfew can enhance these withintheir children through access.“It doesn’t recognise the poor

socioeconomic and historicalcontext within which this coun-try operates and thiswould serveto keep poor people in the periph-ery of academics.”Boughey said universities

needed to acknowledge and treatstudents as “social beings” andintroduce mechanisms to helpthem achieve some semblance ofequality through an evidence-based learning approach.

UFH Teaching and LearningCentre director Dr NoluthandoToni said the event was vital inproviding a platform for academ-ics to pause and consciously re-flect on best practices.“This colloquium is specifical-

ly intended to provide space toreflect, articulate and share ex-periences of designing and facili-tating learning in extended pro-grammes.”WSU learning and teaching de-

velopment institution directorVelile Dwayi said academic dis-courses of suchnaturewere criti-cal in generating new ways andapproaches to teaching andlearning.“Such spaces should constitute

not only the main feature of uni-versity practice where interlinkbetween theory, practice, devel-opment and research might bepromoted, monitored and evalu-ated, but also the generation ofnewways of practiceswhich con-tinue to evolve through our aca-demic discourses,” Dwayi said.Newlyappointed extendedpro-

grammes institution coordina-tor Thabile Loqo said efforts tointroduce a uniform approach inWSU’s screening, admission andplacement of students in extend-ed programmes could help im-prove teaching and learning atthe institution. She said the university must

move away from academic pro-grammes setting their own ad-missions guidelines and startsubscribing to an institutionally-set standard.“The current practice leaves

us susceptible and prone to in-quiries and questions, and right-fully so, about howwe determinestudents’ needs for foundationalprovision from the ones thatdon’t because there’s no uni-formity in the system,” Loqosaid.

THE Walter Sisulu Universi-ty’s arts department has start-ed planting seeds to cultivateand grow research within itswalls with the aspiration ofone day seeing it blossom intomore than just a culture - butthe supreme ethos.

The ongoing research paper“Swazi Oral Literature, Eco-culture and EnvironmentalApocalypse” delivered by theUniversity of Swaziland’s DrEnongene Sone on August 4served to launch the depart-ment’s Seminars Series at theMthatha Campus. The paper examines oral lit-

erature as the epicentre ofSwazis’ indigenous conceptu-alisation of their social exis-tence and focuses on how thisoral literature as a system ofknowledge and cultural prac-tice is engaged by Swazis withregard to environmental sus-tainability.Sone argues that the indige-

nous environmental expertiseamong the Swazi people, en-capsulated in their oral litera-ture, can serve as a critical re-source base for the process ofdeveloping a healthy environ-ment.Furthermore, thepapercon-

tends that ecocriticism,which

is essentially a Western con-cept, can benefit by drawinginspiration from the indige-nous knowledge contained inSwazi culture and expressedin their oral literature.Series coordinator and En-

glish studies senior lecturerDr Thabisani Ndlovu said:“Our aim is to develop and en-courage a true academic spiritof engaging and sharing ideas. This should be the function ofany vibrant arts department -to generatemeaningful debateon issues that affect society atlarge.”It was through such engage-

ment, hepointedout, that soci-ety could review, recommendand implement strategieswith the common purpose ofcontributing towards creatinga robust, all-inclusive and hu-mane society.Ndlovu said the seminars

were also geared towards cre-ating an appropriate spaceand platform to encourageWSU staff and postgraduatestudents to share and assisteach other in collaborative ef-forts to write and publishmore research papers. The series is set to run until

October 13 and will constituteseven seminars with a pletho-ra of broad-based themes look-ing at socio-political sub-themes.

THE Councillor’s Cup, which was initiatedfour years ago to restore a sporting culturein Mthatha East, was held at the Rotary Stadi-um at the weekend.

The tournament was held for residents ofNgangelizwe, the oldest township in Mthatha, and some parts of Khwezi township (ward 02).

Ngangelize is well-known for being the

home of sport in Mthatha, but that culturedied off some years ago. The Councillor’s Cupis aimed at bringing back the love of sport tothe township.

This was revealed during the weekend tour-nament by the ward councillor, Nontyanty-ambo Gcingca, who is championing this sportspectacular.

Six schools from ward 02 participated in thetournament, during which soccer, netball, volleyball and rugby were played.

Ward 02 schools which participated in thetourney included Zimele High School, Mzim-vubu JSS, Nozuko SSS, Ngangelizwe SSS,Jonguhlanga SSS and Skill Centre.

Gcingca said that by hosting these gamesyearly they were trying to keep children awayfrom crime and drug abuse.

“Children growing up in the township areexposed to many things of township lifewhich could end up misleading them. Wewant them to get more involved in sport. This

would help them to stay away from drugabuse and crime in the township.”

She said the tournament was growing year-ly. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Artsand Culture and the private sector are in-volved in the initiative.

In the soccer matches, Skill Centre were thevictors, beating Nganglizwe SSS 1-0 in the fi-nals.
