corpses of four infants (all agedbetween 1 and 2 months) are herchildren, has been arrested formurder on Tuesday.

The arrest follows a shocking discovery bythe suspect’s neighbour, who found the fourdecomposing corpses – two boys and two girls– in a freezer on the weekend.The bodies were in plastic bags, buried un-

der food and were found when the neighbourwas trying to establish why a dreadful smellwas emanating from the freezer.At the time of the gruesome discovery, the

suspectwas attendingher boyfriend’s funeralin Johannesburg.Since the discovery, the house in New

Brighton, Mthatha had been under heavy po-lice surveillance, awaiting the suspect’s re-turn while the crime scene was being investi-gated.Police spokesperson, Col. Mzukisi Fatyela,

confirmed the suspect’s arrest and said thepost mortem report of one of the tiny corpsesstates that the victim had a shoelace tiedaround its neck.“This is why we have arrested the suspect

for murder.”He said the investigation was ongoing and

that the post mortem reports of the otherthree bodies had not yet been completed.Fatyela confirmed that the suspect had

claimed that all the babies were her childrenThe suspect’s arrest followed a four-hour-

long police interrogation at the Madeira Po-lice Station inMthatha,when the suspect, hermother and two relatives arrived there at 9amon Tuesday.After the interrogation the suspect was tak-

en to the crime scene by the police where shewas later arrested and taken back to the hold-ing cells at the Madeira Police Station.According to a member of the community,

why the corpses were kept in the freezer.“People are not angry, but they are disgust-

ed andpuzzled overwhathashappenedhere.”Shortly before the gruesome discovery was

A 63-year-old womanwas gunned down lastThursday at Ngcungeni location in Flagstaffin Eastern Pondoland by an unknown man.No-Ayini Mvunelwa was presumably on

her way home when she was allegedly shotand killed by a man who then ran into a near-by forest.Eastern Pondoland is well-known for at-

tacks on women accused of witchcraft and itis suspected that this killing may be relatedto suspicions of witchcraft.This incident followed another which hap-

pened in the neighbouring town of Lusikisikiwhen three family members were attackedand hacked and stabbed to death. A similarincident tookplace inEngcobo. Suspects havebeen arrested in connection with the Lusikis-iki and Engcobo cases. Police spokespersonCaptainMduduziGodlwana confirmed the in-cident and said police were working day andnight to try and track down the suspect.Godlwana said the attack followed an inci-dent where the bones of a boy was found inthe veld. As a result, community members al-legedly started accusing one another ofwitch-craft, since they had believed it to have beenthe motive for the murder. Godlwana said ameeting had been called by different govern-mentdepartmentswith thepurposeof comingupwith an intervention strategy to stop thesesenseless killings in the area.

MQANDULI law enforcement agenciesare working tirelessly to ensure that thedriver of a car that was involved in a terri-ble accident last Saturday gets arrested.This was revealed by Arrive Alive

spokesperson in the Eastern Cape TsepoMachaea. He said the accident happenedaround8pmonSaturdayand thedriver fledthe scene after the accident. Machaea saidthey are still trying to trace his where-abouts.

Two people were killed in the accidentwhile two more had been seriously injuredand admitted to hospital. Machaea said theaccident took place a few kilometres fromMqanduli and the vehicle that allegedlycaused the accident was heading towardsCoffee Bay. “We heard that it was a hiredcar from a certain company but we are stilltrying to establish who hired the car andfrom which company. We will take the in-vestigation from there,” said Machaea.He condemned the action of running

away from an accident scene and vowed

that strong measures would be takenagainst drivers who failed to stop after anaccident had occurred.

A MOTHER from Cumakala Village in Duty-wa is blaming the police for the fact that thealleged rapist (60) of her baby (6 months) andtoddler (2) is still roaming the streets.

The woman – who cannot be named to pro-tect the identities of the victims – said the sus-pect had been arrested on December 24, 2014.“”Hewas arrested after confessing tomem-

bers of the community that he had raped mybabies.”According to the woman the suspect was

released on December 26, 2014, without hav-ing appeared in Court.She said a case was opened at the Dutywa

Police Station, but when she enquired aboutthe progress of the investigation after nothaving heard from the investigating officer,she was told that it was now being investigat-ed by Butterworth’s police.She was given two cellphone numbers by

the officer when she went to the Dutywa Po-lice Station to collect the birth certificates ofthe victims (these were taken by the policewhen the case was opened).“I met this officer and he gave me two cell-

phone numbers and said that he was the in-vestigating officer, but I never got any satis-factory answers from him.”She told Express that on December 24, her

mother (the victims’ grandmother) went totown to buy groceries for Christmas, leavingthe two children with the suspect who washer mother’s boyfriend.“The suspectwasmymother’s boyfriend so

they (the victims) saw him as their grandfa-ther. After my mother left, the suspect alleg-edly first raped my two year old girl. He thentook her to our neighbour’s house where atraditional ceremony was under way,” saidwoman.She said communitymembers whowere at

the traditional ceremonynoticed that the girl(2) was not walking properly and on examin-ing her they suspected that she had been

raped. According to her, they then took thegirl back home to where the suspect was, inorder to confront him.This was when they heard the baby (6

months) crying uncontrollably, inside thehouse. “When theywent inside they said theyfound the suspect trying to put a nappy on thebaby. When they inspected her private parts,they believed that she had been raped too.”

The neighbours called other communitymembers to the house and when the suspectwas questioned, he allegedly confessed tohav-ing raped the children and that he had put ba-by powder on the baby’s private parts.The police was called and the suspect was

arrested.Police Spokesperson Captain Jackson Ma-

natha confirmed that they were investigating

the case. “This a new case, we are still await-ing test results to confirm whether the chil-dren were raped or not. At this stage there isno direct evidence linking the suspect to thecrime.”Manatha was unable to say if the suspect

was released on bail or on warning. He con-firmed that the suspect didn’t appear in courtbefore having been released.

THEMEC for Rural Development andAgrari-an Reform, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, said in re-sponse to the Eastern Cape leader of the Dem-ocratic Alliance, Athol Trollip’s allegationsabout the bad conditions and non-payment ofstaff at theMagwaandMajola tea estates, thatthe last payment his departmentmade to bothestates was R3,1 million last month.

the decision by Trollip and his friends to visitthe Magwa and Majola tea estates.“The lurid statement issued by Trollip

about the situation at both tea estates partlyshows the extent of challenges that inspiredus to embark on the business rescue processof both estates. It also exposes incorrect andfalse information Trollip paddles as truthabout the situation in the estates andpaymentof employees,” said the statement issued byQoboshiyane.“What might be a rude awakening moment

to him and his bank of friends, is nothing newto us; hence we have been engaging the work-ers through their unions in both estates andthe owners of the Majola tea estate, the work-ers’ trust, on rescuing these estates in orderto protect their jobs.”The statement further reads that now that

Trollip had been to the estates, they trust thathis viewabout their supportwill evolve to em-brace the business rescue process aimed ataddressing the situation and the low tea pro-duction in the estates.MECQoboshiyane called on anyMember of

Provincial Legislature (MPL) and Member ofParliament (MP) to read their business rescueplan so that they could use their positions in

both provincial legislature and the nationalassembly to support their efforts to save jobs,and protect the livelihood of many familieswhose lives are affected by the current situa-tion at the tea estates.“The current situation in these estates de-

mands more than a one-day tour of the es-tates; it needs a long lasting solution to ensuresustainable livelihoods for the workers, reju-venation of the rural economy, protection ofjobs and creation ofmore opportunities for lo-cal businesses, youth and community atlarge.”According to the statement,workers of both

estates are fully behind the business rescueprocess and understand the dynamics facedby both estates more than the visiting Trollipand his friends “who appear to have beenflashing their pricey cameras and taking vid-eo footage more than listening to the issuesat hand”.According to Qoboshiyane, the focus of the

business rescue process was to make surethat Magwa and Majola tea estates produceand package their tea properly for the mar-kets in the same packaging of the tea boxTrol-lip requested from the MEC Qoboshiyane aft-er the committee meeting.“It is incorrect to say the workers were last

paid before the elections. Subsequent to ourengagements and agreement with workers,provincial government’s economic transfor-mation cluster, discussions between the Pre-mier, relevant MECs, Eastern Cape Develop-ment Corporation (ECDC) and the EasternCape Rural Development and Agrarian Re-form (ECRDAR), we held a meeting with Ne-hawu, which represents workers in both es-tates.”“The last paymentwemadewas in January

2015.“Contrary toTrollip’s false claims, this Jan-

uary, we paid about R3,1 million to both es-tates with about R1 933 763.72 forMagwa sala-ries, R901 340.00 forMajola salaries and aboutR264 896.28was paid to the SouthAfricanRev-

enue Services to settle tax debt ofMagwa teaestatewhich had forced SARS to freeze theirbankaccount. The debt owed to SARSmeantthat any money made from tea sales ser-viced the existingSARSdebt,whichwehavenow settled,” clarifies the statement fromQoboshiyane.He further states that now that the debt

has been settled, Magwa tea estate, which isoperating at a minimum capacity level, willbe able to cover operational costs from theprofits of tea sales. Magwa and Majola teaestatesworkers have, amongst other things,agreed that their remuneration will be vari-able costs linked to production and salesrather than fixed costs with no determina-ble output requirements.The business rescue process of both es-

tates had received overwhelming supportfrom all stakeholders in the province witheach prepared to play their part in rescuingthese businesses.“Our focus as government is to fix admin-

istrative and management aspects of the es-tates in order for production to go back tofull capacity, for tea production to unfoldunhindered for the benefit of the workers,local economy and the Workers’ Trust thatowns Majola estate.“The solutions and systems we will put in

place will not be ephemeral like the DA’s in-terest on the states and their one-day visitbut will be long lasting to ensure that thereis sustainable livelihood in the estates, com-munities and in the rural economy.”MEC Qoboshiyane said he had been en-

gaging a number of local communities, theworkers and ANC leaders who are closer tothe estates and who made a number of pro-posals which are included in the businessrescue plan.MECQoboshiyane called on the DA not to

make the plight of the workers and the teaestates a political football but to rather jointhe work done to protect and save jobs in or-der to develop communities.

. Responding to MEC Mlibo Qoboshiya-ne’s statement, Trollip said theMECneeded

to be careful when sending public officials towrite his political statements. “This state-ment written by Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha,who is Qoboshiyane’s spokesperson, is notonly unprofessional but it is also insulting.The said official has chosen to refer to me as“Trollip” and to my parliamentary and legis-lature colleagues as a “bank” and “army” offriends. Sicwetsha clearly has no idea of whathe is talking about. I have been there and vi-sited thosepeople foryearsnowand theyhavetold me of the plight. I have taken video foot-age which clearly illustrates the dire prob-lems faced.”In a letter to the MEC Trollip said, “I chal-

lenge both of you (Sicwetsha and Qoboshiya-ne) to disprove what I said in the statementor to retract these accusations. I at least havebeen to Magwa on numerous occasions andwent to both estates myself and interactedwith workers and management staff in orderto assess the state of affairs for myself. I havebeen on this portfolio since 1999 and have apassion for making Agriculture work.“Your staff member’s comments are an in-

sult to me and my efforts in this regard overa period of fifteen years!!“This kind of knee-jerk denial and trading

of insults can never be in the interest of theestates and the community that live andworkthereon,” Trollip addedTrollip said he would compare his findings

with those of the portfolio committee whenthey visit Magwa later in the year to deter-mine who is peddling untruths.“The facts are thatneithermanagementnor

workers are aware that they’ve been paid. AtMagwa someworkersmistook us as potentialinvestors and pleaded, “sitathe siyafa apha”(take us, we are dying here). TheMEC clearlyhas no idea about tea production, perhaps it’she that should “listen to the issues at hand”and familiarise himself with the real state ofaffairs there. Let it be known that the MEC’soffer of a “cupof tea that runnethover” is typi-cal of empty ANC promises that the people ofthis province have been hearing for the pasttwenty years,” he ended.

VOLKSWAGEN is launching a small car in the A00 seg-ment.

The award winning up! will be introduced belowVolkswagen Polo Vivo and Polo, which have been the toptwo best-selling passenger models in South Africa since2010.

At 3,540 mm in length, 1,641 mm in width and 1,489 mmin height, the up! is one of the smallest four-seater carson the market. Its overall length consists of short bodyoverhangs and a long wheelbase of 2,420 mm. Thanks tothese dimensions the turning circle of the up! is an unu-sually compact 9.8 metres.

Use of space inside the car is exceptionally good, withspace for four adults. This is due to the wheelbase, whichis one of the longest in the segment, combined with anengine that is mounted well forward. The 251-litre bootis also significantly larger than is typical in this class.When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space increasesto 951 litres.

The up! has a large bootlid, which extends right downto the bumper. This so-called hybrid bootlid consists ofthree basic layers. Its outer skin consists of a transparentglass element. The bootlid is opened by pressing a buttonin the handle beneath the Volkswagen logo.

Powering the up! is a new generation of three-cylinderpetrol engine with outputs of 55 kW. Standstill to 100 km/

h takes 13.2 seconds and top speed is 171 km/h. This en-gine returns a combined fuel consumption of 4.7 litresper 100km while emitting 108 g/km of carbon dioxide.

The aluminium five-speed gearbox in the up! was spe-cially tuned for the its three-cylinder petrol engine. Thegearbox weighs just 25 kg including transmission fluid,which makes it one of the world’s lightest gearbox in thistorque class (the gearbox also comes with indicators forthe recommended gear and the engaged gear in the in-strument cluster).

Two derivatives are available: Take up! and Move up!.Both are competitively priced and offer a high level ofstandard equipment. A raft of safety features includingABS and four airbags are available as standard features.Factory fitted optional features include:

ADOUBLE header between the teams con-testing the SAB Regional League, whichincluded a Butterworth derby, was held atMsobomvu Stadium in Butterworth.

It was a weekend filled with football en-tertainment despite the poor attendance atthe grounds.The derby was between Butterworth All

Stars and Butterworth United and the sec-ond game was between Green Lovers FCand Hotspurs FC.Although both the games were played in

very hot weather conditions and in frontof few spectators, the players did not seemaffected and displayed excellent footballskills.The first game was between Green Lov-

ers FC andHotspurs FC. Both teams playedwith determination to win the game butunfortunately they had to share a point aft-er drawing one all.The second game was the derby between

the teams from Butterworth who wantedto show each other who is the best betweenthem. Both teams proved to be strong asthe game ended in a goalless draw.Poor attendance for spectators at Msob-

omvu stadium was still a huge challengebecause football fans did not turn up innumbers as expected for the big derbygame.Last month Butterworth United boss

Mzwamadoda Sinyanya raised his concernregarding the poor attendance at thegrounds.Sinyanya urged soccer fans to come out

in numbers and support local football inorder to boost the confidence of players

and show support to the up-and-coming stars. He voiced his con-cern after his side claimed a 5-2 victory over their neighboursGreen Lovers. Green Lovers FC coach Golden Nguqu also voicedhis concern about the poor attendance at the sport ground andalso urged supporters to come in numbers and support local foot-ball.

Only time will tell if it is going to be like lastseason when the teams were neck-to-neck intheir hunger to be crowned champion.AmaMpondo lost the title by failing tobe con-

sistent towards the end of the tournament, al-though they had been sitting at the top of thelog for three months prior to last year’s finalclash.

AmaMpondo fell back in the end, givingStorm Breakers a chance to capitalize ontheir remaining games, eventually affordingthem maximum points and the title.Last year AmaMpondo FC was seen as the

favourites to clinch the title by most of thespectators and supports from Lusikisiki , butStorm Breakers were also eyeing the title.

This year AmaMpondo will be looking at rec-tifying last year’s mistakes.The match promises to be an all-out strug-

gle for glory, since StormBreakerswill be outin full force to defend the title.Supporters are called to come out in num-

bers on Sunday to witness the two giants do-ing battle. The match starts at 15:00.
