Nelson RolihlahlaMandela, the father of SouthAfrica’s democracy, passed away peacefully inthe company of his family around 20h50 on De-cember 5.

The man who was to become one of theworld’s greatest iconswasborn inMvezo,Tran-skei on 18 July 1918, to Nongaphi Nosekeni andHenry Gadla Mandela. His father was the keycounsellor/advisor to the Thembu royal house. After his father’s death in 1927, the youngRo-

lihlahla became the ward of Chief Jongintaba

Dalindyebo, the acting regent of theThembunation. It was at the Thembu royal home-stead that his personality, values and politi-cal views were shaped. There can be nodoubt that the young man went on to bringabout some of the most significant and re-markable changes in South African historyand politics. It is through Mandela that the world cast

its eyes on South Africa and took notice ofthe severe andorganized repression of blackSouth Africans. Yet it was also throughMandela that theworldwould learn the spir-it of endurance, the triumph of forgivenessand the beauty of reconciliation. Indeed, thestoryofNelsonMandela is somuch the storyof South Africa. When he was only 25 years old, Nelson

Mandela joined the African National Con-gress. His political career would span dec-adesmore – ashehimself said: “The struggleis my life.” The young Mandela also quali-fied and practised as a lawyer.Together with Oliver Tambo he opened

the first black legal practice in Johannes-burg.Mandela married Evelyn Nomathamsan-

qaMase in 1945. Theyweremarried for four-teen years and had four children: Them-bekile (1946), Makaziwe (1947), who died atnine months, Makgatho (1951) and Makazi-we (1954). The couple divorced in 1958.He was instrumental in the formation of

the radical African National CongressYouth League (ANCYL) in the 1940s whichwas determined to change the face of poli-tics. Mandela was elected the league’s Na-tional Secretary in 1948 and President in1952.Much of the years that followed sawMan-

dela deeply involved in activism, rallyingfor political change against the increasinglyaggressive apartheid government. He was akey player in the ANC’s Campaign for the

Defiance of Unjust Laws in 1952 and the Trea-son Trial in 1961. During this time he was in-carcerated several times under the apartheidlaws and banned from political activity. Real-ising that the ANC needed to prepare for amore intensive struggle, he became an instru-mental force behind the formation of a newsection of the liberationmovement, Umkhon-to we Sizwe (MK), as an armed nucleus witha view to preparing for armed struggle. Man-dela was commander in chief of MK.On 14 June 1958 Nelson and Winnie

Madikizela were married at a local Bizanachurch. They had two children, Zenani (1958)and Zindziswa (1960). In April 1992 they wereseparated and finally divorced in 1996.He left the country in 1962 and travelled

abroad to arrange guerilla training for mem-bers of Umkhonto weSizwe. On his return toSouthAfrica hewas arrested for illegally exit-ing the countryand incitement to strike.Man-dela decided to represent himself in court. While on trial, Mandela was charged with

sabotage in the Rivonia Trial. This is his fa-mous statement from the dock made in 1964:“I have fought againstWhite domination, andI have fought against Black domination. Ihave cherished the ideal of a democratic andfree society in which all persons live togetherin harmony and with equal opportunities. Itis an ideal which I hope to live for and toachieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal forwhich I am prepared to die.”In the same year Mandela and the other ac-

cused were sentenced to life imprisonment inthe Rivonia Trial and sent to Robben Island, nearCapeTown. While in prison,Mandela re-jected offersmade by his jailers to be releasedon condition that he renounced violence.“Prisoners cannot enter into contracts. Onlyfree men can negotiate,” he said. He serveda total of 27 years in prison for his convictionto fight apartheid and its injustices.Released on 11 February 1990, Mandela

plunged wholeheartedly into his life’s work, striving to attain the goals he and others hadset out almost four decades earlier. In 1991,at the first national conference of the ANCheld inside South Africa after being bannedfordecades,NelsonMandelawas electedPres-ident of the ANCwhile his lifelong friend andcolleague, Oliver Tambo, became the organi-sation’s National Chairperson. In a life that symbolises the triumph of the

human spirit, Nelson Mandela accepted the1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with FW deKlerk) onbehalf of all SouthAfricanswho suf-fered and sacrificed so much to bring peaceto our land. The era of apartheid formally came to an

end on April 27, 1994, when Nelson Mandelavoted for the first time in his life – along withhis people. However, long before that date ithad become clear, even before the start of ne-gotiations at theWorldTradeCentre inKemp-ton Park, that the ANC was increasinglycharting the future of South Africa.Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was inaugurat-

ed as President of a democratic South Africaon 10 May 1994.This world icon worked tirelessly even af-

ter the achievement of democracy in SouthAfrica to continue improving lives. Even ashe retired from politics, his attention shiftedto social issues such as HIV and AIDs and thewellbeing of the nation’s children. As a testi-mony to his sharp political intellect, wisdomand unrelenting commitment to make theworld a better place, Mandela formed theprestigious group called The Elders – an inde-pendent group of eminent global leaders, whooffer their collective influence and experi-ence to support peace building, help addressmajor causes of human suffering andpromotethe shared interests of humanity.Mr Mandela is survived by his wife Graça,

THE MEC for the Department of Transportin the Eastern Cape Province, ThandiswaMarawu, launched a provincial festive sea-son Arrive Alive campaign called OperationAsihleki (we not laughing) at Lubhalasi Vil-lage in Mount Ayliff last week.

This campaign was launched as part ofpraying and blessing the N2 road for a saferfestive season, as the EC roads pose a threattomanymotorists and pedestrians accordingto statistics of the previous festive season. This is a concerted effort by thedepartment

to curb road carnage during the festive sea-son and beyond. It aims at promoting roadtraffic safety in general throughout the prov-ince, in order to reduce the number of roadaccidents, fatalities and injuries, as well ascombating road traffic offences by means ofa multi-disciplinary “Zero Tolerance” ap-proach.Marawu was joined by a number of stake-

holders suchas religious groups, taxi andbusassociations, together with traffic officersfrom all over the Eastern Cape and neigh-bouring provinces. She said the venue was chosen wisely as it

was situated in the part that had claimedmost lives.Marawu further said that their ap-proach this year is “Operation Asihleki”,which will helpmake the N2 corridor the saf-est in the country.“We will conduct cross border operations,

where provinces will help each other to de-crease the accident rate and this year we aregoing to arrest people and confiscate vehiclesthat are not road worthy,” said Marawu. The MEC said the high mortality rate on

the province’s roads was unacceptable. “Thatis whywewill be working throughout the fes-tive season. People should be warned.”At about an hour after the road block was

conducted 330 cars were stopped, 58 peoplewere fined, and 2 people were arrested fordrinking and driving and failure to producea driver’s permit. The roadblock was started after the launch

of the operation and the traffic officers wereserious about making a difference.
