THE Minister of Basic Education, AngieMotshekga has highlighted the importanceof offering mathematics in all schools, how-ever, a shortage of qualified mathematicsteachers in the system has been a challenge.

In a bid to address this, the Department ofBasic Education (DBE) has signed a Memo-randum of Understanding (MOU) withTEACH South Africa to place “TEACH Am-bassadors” in schools that do not have quali-fied mathematics teachers. This forms partof the DBE’s national strategy to address theshortage of mathematics teachers, as well asensuring the promotion of mathematics as asubject necessary for the growth of the SouthAfrican economy.TEACH South Africa recruits and selects

top performing young graduates in the fieldof Mathematics, Science and English fromuniversities across the country and placesthem in disadvantaged and rural schools fora minimum period of two years. TEACHSouth Africa is committed to providing aplatform for young graduates, who have ex-celled academically, who have demonstratedleadership skills and are committed to giv-ing back to their communities through

teaching.Since its inception in 2009, TEACH South

Africa has placed 382 TEACH Ambassadorsin eight provinces and in 228 schools impact-ing about 25 000 learners. To date, 57% ofTEACH Ambassadors remain in the teach-ing profession, thereby increasing the poolof teachers in these scarce skills. In this part-nership the TEACH Ambassadors will beplaced in schools that are located mostly inrural areas where it is often difficult to at-tract qualified mathematics teachers.TEACH South Africa will provide on-goingsupport to the TEACH Ambassadorsthroughout the two years.“This large placement enables us to

achieve a greater impact across the country.Weare proud to partnerwith theDepartmentof Basic Education to improve the quality ofeducation for children irrespective of theireconomic background by increasing the poolof quality mathematics teachers in South Af-rica. School districts in the Eastern Cape,KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo had the lowestnumber of students who passed matric in2015, we applaud Minister Motshekga for ad-dressing this by ensuring quality mathemat-ics teachers are placed specifically in theseareas,” said TEACH South Africa ExecutiveDirector, Richard Masemola.

He said his organisation has recruited andselected graduates from the finest South Af-rican Universities who are not only topachievers, but who are committed to beingChange Agents in South Africa.“In order to build a prosperous, equitable

and competitive South Africa, we must in-vest in high quality education. This isaligned with the goals of the National Devel-opment Plan for Education, Training and In-novation,” said Dr Futhi Mtoba, TEACHSouth Africa President and Co-Founder.Motshekga has welcomed the implementa-

SUV’s and 4x4s conquering the concrete jungle, climbingtheoddpavementhereandtherewhenparking is at a premium, instead of kicking updust and climbing mountains, have become thenorm.

Ford has, however, recently launched its new-look Everest which has had a comprehensive re-vamp inside and out. And the Everest is a 4x4which you can really climb mountains with –should you wish to, in style.

It offers the practicality that one would getfrom its Ranger bakkie origins, enough seats forseven grown-ups – yes grown-ups - and the com-forts of Ford’s latest smart technology.

While being built on the platform of its bakkiebrother, the Everest has been adapted to suchan extent that one hardly notices its bakkie ori-gins – both in looks and drive.

To make you feel that you are not driving abakkie, the Everest has its own rear suspensionand off-road setup.

ThemodelrangeinSouthAfricaoffersoneen-gine and one gearbox (6-speed automatic) withtwo spec levels – the XLT and the top-spec Limit-ed. Both are 4x4’s.

The3.2-litre five-cylinderturbodiesel fromtheRanger is used, but it has received some efficien-cy upgrades.

Its price could however present a big moun-tain to climb. The Everest, whose main competi-tor is the newly upgraded Toyota Fortuner, ispriced at R593 900 for the XLT (the model testdriven) and R646 900 for the Limited.

The new Toyota Fortuner’s 4x4 models arepriced between R571 400 and R633 400.

ExteriorThe Everest is based on the chassis of the Ran-

ger bakkie. It is a big vehicle and high and if itweren’t for the running boards on the side, thewomen who so like the high seating position ofthese high riding vehicles would have had a dif-

ficult time of getting elegantly into and out ofthat seating position.

The new look is a total revamp and looksmuch better than its boxy, bulky predecessor.

InteriorThe Everest’s biggest selling point must be

the fact that it is a full seven-seater for adults. Two averaged sized adults will have enough legand headroom in the backrow.

Apart from the luxury of space, the Everestalso has leather seats and high comfort levelsin a stylish package.

It is one of the most technologically advancedSUVs on the market.

The dashboard is dominated by the modern-looking Ford Sync 2 infotainment system withtouchscreen. Comfort features include controlson the steering wheel for the audio/infotain-ment system.

Sync2 recognises voice commands to controlthe car’s entertainment system, climate controland connected mobile devices. It also boasts aneight-inch touchscreen which is quite easy tonavigate – even by those, such as me, who aretechnologically challenged and leave it up to ourchildren to connect the phones, etc.

The interior is cleverly designed for practical-ity (and keeping all 7 occupants happy) withmore than 30 stowage spaces, multiple poweroutlets.

It has standard folding second and third-rowseating which offers flexible seating and cargoarrangements to cater for both passenger de-mands and carrying cargo.

In the high-spec Everest Limited, the third-row seats feature a power-fold function, a pow-ered tailgate and an optional dual-panel moonroof.

FeaturesThe lower spec XLT-model is comprehensive-

ly packaged with impressive features, including

the innovative new Terrain Management Sys-tem.

Safety features include seven airbags, driverassist technologiessuchasanElectronicStabili-ty Program (ESP) with Roll Stability Control, cruise control, as well as rear park assist withrear view camera.

The XLT has 18-inch alloy wheels and run-ning boards as standard.

ThehigherspecLimitedmodelhasafewextrapremium features such as power-fold third rowseatsandpoweredtailgate, plusdriveraidssuchas Active Park Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control,Auto High Beam Control, Blind Spot Monitor-ingwithCrossTrafficAlert,TyrePressureMon-itoring, Lane Departure Warning and LaneKeep Assist.

Active Park Assist on the Everest Limited en-ables drivers to parallel park hands-free, requir-ing only accelerating, shifting and braking fromthe driver.

Also fitted are two USB ports, an SD card slotand Aux input plus a total of four 12V sockets.

Exterior enhancements on the Limited modelinclude 20-inch alloy wheels, high intensity dis-charge (HID) headlamps and LED daytime run-ning lights.

RideBoth models are powered by the latest-gener-

ation 3.2-litre five-cylinder Duratorq TDCi tur-bodiesel engine which produces 147kW of pow-er matched to 470Nm of torque.

Yes, it is big and bulky and it will never han-dle quite like a car, (as more compact SUV’s do)but Ford has done a lot to remove the bakkiefeel from the Everest.

Itssuspensionisoneexampleof this–andonecould feel that on the speed humps on my dailycommute. It definitely deals better with thosethan a bakkie does. On the open road is doesn’tfeel floaty or sluggish at all.

And once I got used to its big dimensions, parking it was actually not so bad.

Part of the bakkie feel being taken out of theequation is owing to the six-speed automatictransmission. It shifts smoothly and is actuallyquite responsive to some pressure on the pedal. If there is one thing I hate about driving a bak-kie, it is that manual shifting of the gears.

The transmission features the added benefitof a Sport mode, as well as a Manual mode forimproved control.

Road noise is also minimal thanks to Ford’sActive Noise Cancellation technology.

The 4x4 aspectThe Everest offers an intelligent four-wheel

drive and an advanced Terrain ManagementSystem to help navigate challenging terrain.

This system gives drivers four settings - Nor-mal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock.

This alters the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission, intelligent four-wheel drive sys-tem and traction control as the circumstancesrequire.

For extreme off-road environments, driverscanmanually lockthetransfercaseinlow-rangefour-wheel drive mode for increased control.PRICE:
