The ‘One’ to beat when itcomes to quality flooring

BY KYLE GALDEIRA

A s American Carpet One celebrates its 38th anniver-sary as a locally owned and operated full-servicehome floor and design center, the company contin-

ues to rely on a basic principle that, like its many flooringproducts, withstands the tests of time.

“We don’t just sell flooring, we build relationships in thecommunity,” said American Carpet One sales managerAaron Okamoto. “We make friends, and that’s what it’s allabout: building relationships.”

The company benefits from its involvement with theCarpet One Co-Operative, which is the seventh largest co-operative in the world and includes roughly 950 other local-ly owned and operated stores across the U.S., Canada, NewZealand, Australia and Guam. According to Okamoto, col-lectively last year, the co-operative generated more than$3.8 billion in floor-covering purchases, and the resulting

savings are passed on to the customers.“We’re a Stainmaster Flooring Center, one of 200 nation-

wide, giving us exclusivity on the products and services,” saidOkamoto when describing the coveted combination ofquality and value American Carpet One offers through itsvast network of vendors. “Stainmaster recently re-brandedtheir whole collection, and they’re now offering lifetime war-ranties. We’re the only ones with the Ultra Life Advantage, which gives us a warranty on all products.”

American Carpet One also offers one of the most pop-ular flooring options on the market in Karndean — a vinylfloor covering billed as “The Perfect Floor.” The flooring typeis a Luxury Vinyl Tile, the fastest growing floor covering cat-egory in the world. As Okamoto explained, “It’s a pure ver-sion, virgin vinyl that provides a stain-resistant flooringoption. We introduced it to the state in 2004 and have beengoing gangbusters with it ever since. The product fits withour island lifestyle. It’s made out of the same material as

Clorox bottles — if it can handle thosechemicals, then anything can go on top of it.

“When installed properly, it makes yourfloor pretty much water-resistant, so in theevent of flooding, it will survive and the waterwill not seep under,” said Okamoto. “Anytimewood, laminate or carpet gets damaged, youneed to rip it out, throw it away and startagain. This is one floor that will survive foryou, and termites haven’t figured out how toeat it yet, so we’re calling it the perfect floor. The design applications are endless.”

Karndean is available as a floating loose layvinyl, meaning there’s no “click system” orglue. The installer simply lays it down — theperfect do-it-yourself option that’s as easy ascutting the product with a sharp utility knife.

“Karndean provides the look of wood butwithout all the headaches,” added Okamoto.“From a landlord or property managementperspective, you’ll love this product becauseyou’re not replacing it every three years likeyou do with carpet. It’s a one-time installa-tion … and you’re going to feel the higherrental value because it just looks sharp.Everyone loves the wood and laminate look, but now you really can’t damage it.Commercially, it’s good for high-traffic areas,it’s easy to clean. There’s over 3 millionsquare feet of this product installed inWalmart stores across the nation. It appealsto all consumer categories.”

There are so many things to considerand do before, during and after a ren-ovation. Having a contractor control

the flow of the project will help make sure theproject goes according to plan and finisheswithin the time promised. CV ConstructionLLC is just that type of company.

A recent project involved a homeownerand serviceman who, just before he wasdeployed, inquired about our services. WhenI went to complete the free estimate, he hadalready been deployed, so his wife walkedme through their renovation request. I thendrafted an estimate on site and sat downwith the homeowner’s wife and explainedthe estimate from beginning to end.

After a few email exchanges betweenmyself and the deployed husband, the couple

settled on what they wanted to complete intheir renovation. I had the wife come to ourshowroom to look at some samples andfinalize the contract. Then we went shoppingfor their appliances.

Contractors always know where to getthe right-priced materials for your projectand help you with buying the right appliancesto fit your budget. While shopping, I gave hermy ideas of items that would fit her budget. We settled on what she wanted and had theitems delivered.

As with all renovations, there were bumpsalong the way. I helped the couple by main-

taining contact with both the husband andwife. After the project was completed, Ifound out that her father did a similar reno-vation (not in Hawaii) and was amazed atthe speed and quality of the project.

CV Construction LLC strives to exceedthe expectations of the homeowner witheach project. We maintain an open line ofcommunication so there are no surprises, andwe always strive to save time and money.

We have a special going on right now fora brand-new house build ($115 per squarefoot minimum for a 2,000-square-footbuild). This includes Hardie BoardSiding/Bamboo Flooring and StandardPlumbing fixtures (restrictions apply). Call toinquire more about the special.

Everyone’s life needs a bit oforganization, so why not do itwith a bit of fun and whimsy? For

a new way to get organized, think charm-ing, unique ... think chalkboard paint. That’sright, the old-school chalkboard is makinga stylish comeback. And with a bit ofhands-on creativity, your home can beorganized, stylish and enjoyable.

Definable drawersIs your home being overrun with clut-

ter? The best way to overcome clutter —and keep everything tidy — is to ensureeverything has its own place. Labeling is agreat way to stay organized and alertfamily members where items are. Usingstickers and markers for identification cansometimes look plain and boring, and aremore permanent. Luckily, there is anotherway to label: chalkboard paint.

Drawers are ideal for storage andcome in a variety of sizes to store any-thing from toys to jewelry. Plus, you canfind great deals on old sets at yard salesor thrift stores. To start, simply clean andpaint your drawers in a color that coor-dinates with your room’s decor. Once thepaint is dry, create a border around thefront of each drawer with painter’s tape.Next, spray several even coats of KrylonChalkboard Spray Paint inside the tapedarea. When the entire project is dry, usechalk to identify the contents of eachdrawer. And don’t limit yourself to whitechalk; colored chalk can add a stylish twistto your project.

Soon, your home will feel more organ-ized and stylish with this easy and delight-ful craft idea. For more project ideas, visitwww.krylon.com.

Are you ready for the next big storm?Let Discount Windows & Doors strengthen your home againstone of the greatest threats to life and property: hurricanes

A s the past has shown, theHawaiian Islands are not safefrom the destruction caused by

these deadly storms. Our tropicalwaters and warm, moist atmosphere area lethal recipe for a hurricane. In fact, thechances of one hitting Hawaii are rapidlyincreasing as ocean temperatures esca-late because of global warming. Even withtechnological advances, there is still no wayof knowing when a hurricane will hit andhow much damage it will cause.

In 1992, Hawaii was hit with the most dev-astating hurricane it had ever experienced,Hurricane Iniki. An estimated 130 mile perhour winds hit the coast of Kauai, causing near-ly $3 billion in damage. More than 14,000homes and apartments were damaged ordestroyed and six deaths were recorded.

A decade earlier, Hurricane Iwa caused$250 million in damage. More than 7,426houses and apartments statewide, and 30percent on Kauai alone, were affected ordestroyed.

The future of hurricanes in HawaiiAccording to Oahu Civil Defense, based

on past experience, if a storm as strong asIwa strikes any of the Islands:

• 12 percent of homes and apartmentscould be destroyed

• 38 percent of homes and apartmentscould be heavily damaged

• An additional 40 percent will probablyhave minor damage

Increased since 2007, Hawaii is now des-ignated as a 105 miles per hour wind zone,

which is equivalent to a “Category 2” hurri-cane. There are plans to increase this figure.A combination of the increased wind zoneand the dangers posed by hurricanes hasprompted the Hawaii State BuildingCommission to adopt new building codes. These codes require high-performance win-dows and doors that can resist hurricane-force winds and the impact of flying debris.

Discount Windows & Doors has theexpertise and product selection to ensurethat you will not only meet, but exceednew building codes. The company’s MakaiRange of windows and doors is tested inwinds exceeding 180 miles per hour, theequivalent of a “Category 5” hurricane. In

addition to the Makai Range, DiscountWindows & Doors offers a wide range ofAluminum Hurricane-Proof pro-ducts. Hurricane-proof windows anddoors must pass stringent tests to be cer-tified. The glass must withstand the impactof a 2-inch by 4-inch beam fired from atesting cannon at 52 feet per second —not once, but twice. Afterwards, the glassmust remain in the frame while subjectedto 4,500 cycles of positive/negative airpressure, up to -175 psf.

Discount Windows & Doors is your singlesource for window and door needs inHawaii, whether it be a vinyl residential win-dow or heavy-impact, hurricane-proof door.

Much of this three-story house disappeared following Hurricane Andrew, although its hurricane-proof windows and doors remained intact.

With the ongoing challenges of our economy, manyfamilies are choosing to remodel their home tofit their changing needs, rather than selling their

home and buying another one. Your home is likely yourlargest investment, and even simple remodels can cost hun-dreds or thousands of dollars, so you want to make sureyou find a contractor you can trust.

The best place to start is the Directory of ProfessionalRemodelers at www.nahb.org/remodelerdirectory, or visitwww.biahawaii.org. A professional remodeler will upholdthe highest professional and ethical standards in the indus-try. These sources can also help you find a remodeler whospecializes in a specific type of remodeling such as aCertified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) to help modifyyour home to better suit you as you age, or a CertifiedGreen Remodeler (CGM) to make your home more ener-gy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Ask for referrals from friends, family, neighbors, cowork-ers and others who have had remodeling work done. Or,consult building materials suppliers, architects, engineers, home inspectors, lenders and insurance professionals.

There are also websites where consumers leave com-ments about their experiences with local businesses such aswww.yelp.com, www.angieslist.com and www.kudzu.com.Be careful about these sources of information, though,

because you have no way of knowing who left thecomment or if they were honest.

Do research to verify that potential remodelers areappropriately licensed and have a good business trackrecord. Look them up with state office of consumerprotection, the Better Business Bureau as well as withDCCA vocational licensing agency. Verify that theremodeler has the appropriate contractor licenses forthe work and see if they have received any complaints. If so, were those complaints resolved satisfactorily?

When meeting with remodelers, be sure to ask:

• How long have they been in business in your com-munity? Can they provide references from customersand suppliers they work with?

• Do they carry insurance that protects you from claimsarising from property damage or job site injuries? Ask for acopy of the insurance certificates.

• What is their working knowledge of the many types andages of homes in the area, and what sort of issues could arise?

• Do they arrange for the building permit? The person whoobtains the permit is the contractor on record and there-fore liable for the work.

• Do they provide a written estimate before the workbegins, and a detailed contract that spells out the work thatwill and will not be performed, protects both of you, pro-vides a fair payment schedule contract and complies withlocal, state and federal laws?

• Do they offer a warranty? What is covered and for how long?

For more information, visit www.nahb.org/remodeling orwww.biahawaii.org.

Wow! It’s hard to believe summer isactually over and school isalready starting up again. A new

school year can be exciting and scary at thesame time, bringing new opportunities andchallenges. Change affects our school-agechildren in multiple ways, so keeping theflow of energetic support constant and sta-ble at home is important.

Recently, I received the following ques-tion from a concerned parent: “My threechildren are going back to school nextweek — one to a new grade, the other toa new school and my daughter to her firstcollege dorm room. Do you have anyadvice on what I can do to make the tran-sition easier for them?”

I sure do. To help younger children feelgrounded at home as they enter the newschool year, follow these guidelines:

1. “Match” their room to who they aretoday. Are the décor and furniture ageappropriate? For example, if your child is 12and Barney posters are still on the bedroom

wall, it is time for a change. Is the bed longenough or the desk big enough? A bed that istoo short or a desk that is too small suggestsstunted growth and an inability to “stretchout” in life. If change is necessary, make sureyou talk it over with your child first!

2. Get rid of “old” energy. Everything in yourchild’s room — furniture, clothes, toysand even random objects — holdsenergy. To reduce the energetic “noise,”remove anything that no longer fits, isbroken or is no longer used or needed.

3. Create a system for morning flow.Things can easily get hectic as you aretrying to get out of the door in themorning. To avoid starting the day with“challenging energy,” set the tone bytaking a few minutes to create a sys-tem that everyone can stick to. Createa “grab-and-go area” for all your chil-dren’s school-related items and startthe day with more focused energy.

Going Away To SchoolIf your child is college bound, you can

help them set up their studio apart-ment or dorm room with feng shui

concepts. One of the challenges is ensuringthat the space is inspiring, yet supports rest. The goal is to create a space where sleep, study and play are all supported. Here aresome guidelines to achieve this:

To Sleep Better1. Put the bed in an empowering position. When lying in bed, your child should beable to see the door without having tocrane his or her neck. Yet, the bed should beplaced so that it avoids the direct “path ofthe doorway” — any area in the room thatis directly in line with the doorway.Determine this area by standing atthe entrance and imagining abright light the width of the doorshining into the room.

2. Choose calming sheets andbedding colors. Selecting peacefuldesigns and colors that you canfind in nature — calming greens, blues, yellows and earth tones —sets the intent for restful sleep.

3. Be conscious of the area aroundthe bed. The area immediatelyaround the bed should also be

calming and peaceful, so hang active imagesaway from where your child sleeps.

To Study Better1. Put the desk in an empowering position. This means the desk should face the door. Ifthat option is unavailable, place a mirror onthe desk so your child can see any activitybehind him or her.

2. Organize the desk area for success. Placea good reading light on or near the desk.Rather than use the desk for storage, utilizeshelves and drawers.

3. Place a bulletin board over the desk. Thiscreates a place for your child to note impor-tant deadlines, post inspiring photos or listgoals to accomplish.

The beginning of the school year is a timeof high energy — perfect for creating a spacethat supports your children’s endeavors whileleaving room for growth and opportunities.

Hide visible electrical cords to calm yournerves. They affect your nervous sys-tem and can trigger stress reminders

and activate undesirable tension. To createinstant calm and mental alignment, camouflagethem with plants, move them out of site ororganize them into neat bundles.

For many years, creating family-friendly spaces meant sacrificingyour design aesthetic. Thankfully,

gone are the days when having childrenmeant succumbing to a house full of bright-yellow bins and sofas wrapped in plastic.Today, new materials and technologiesmake it easy to create a beautiful, well-designed home that meets the needs ofadults and children alike.

The following tips may help you design aliving space that satisfies your design goalsand meets the demands of your youngestfamily members:

Invest in good furnitureIt may seem counterintuitive, but Erica

Islas, interior designer and founder of EMIInterior Design, encourages clients withyoung children to buy high-quality furni-ture. “Some people are afraid to invest inliving rooms and family rooms becausethey think kids will ruin everything,” Islassaid. “But the truth is that you have to get

things that will hold up to children.”Children are notoriously tough on furni-

ture; and the cheaper furniture you may betempted to buy will likely break more easilyand need to be replaced frequently.Instead, look for pieces that are built towithstand years of abuse and can be

reupholstered or refinished once your chil-dren have grown. Furthermore, many furni-ture manufacturers and stores offer war-ranties. Consider those carefully and decideif the extra protection would be of value toyour family.

Use color, pattern and textureInstead of creating a neutral, never-

used formal area, use bold, textured fab-rics throughout the rooms in which youspend the most time. Pieces incorporat-ing color, a bit of pattern and touchabletextures will not only create interestingfocal points throughout your home, butwill help camouflage spills. If complex pat-terns aren’t your thing, consider materialssuch as leather or vinyl that can be wipedclean. No matter your design aesthetic, make sure to protect your upholsteredpieces with a stain guard.

Accessorize out of children’s reachCreating a kid-friendly space does not

mean glass and art should go into stor-age. Instead, teach your family to appreci-ate beautiful objects by living amongthem and elevate the more fragile acces-sories so they are out of reach. Shadowboxes and enclosed shelves make stun-ning display cases for your most delicate

decorative pieces.

Make surfaces easier to cleanWhen selecting paint for high-traffic areas, consider semi-

gloss and high-gloss finishes, which are easy to clean. A dampsponge is all you need to clean fingerprints and smudgesfrom your walls. Behr Premium Plus Ultra Semi-GlossEnamel paint, for example, forms a protective shell to pro-tect walls against scuffs and marks.

Encourage togetherness with savvy storageMany parents designate separate play areas to keep

clutter out of communal areas. Instead, encourage togeth-erness by creating storage options in every room of thehouse.

“Clutter is part of family life,” Islas said. “The key thingto remember is to have a place for everything; this meanscoat hooks for jackets, storage baskets, designated draw-ers for toys, shelving for books, etc.”

Providing these spaces within children’s reach and closeto where they play will encourage children to clean upafter themselves. Look for multitasking furniture such as acoffee table with a large surface for playing games togeth-er and ample storage underneath to stow toys andremotes when they aren’t needed.

Following these easy steps will ensure each room inyour home meets your design aesthetic, while still offeringmaximum functionality fit for the whole family.

Families are always looking forways to spend more timetogether, and parents are often

searching for strategies to pull theirkids away from the television andvideo games. Many homeownersare creating gathering spaces right intheir own backyards, to provide afun and at-home retreat.

1. Child size and kid friendly.Consider incorporating kid’s out-door furniture into your backyardspace design. Having their own area, seats and tables will encouragethem to spend more time outdoors.

2. Stay on budget. Creating an out-door room doesn’t have to breakthe bank. Look for outdoor piecesthat can serve multiple purposes. For example, picnic tables withdetached benches can be used in

the traditional way, or you can setout a buffet style meal on the tableand use the benches elsewhere formore casual seating.

3. Carve out a space for just you.Especially for busy mothers, anyporch, patio or outdoor spacesshould always leave a section nes-tled in the corner for solo-relax-ation. Whether you string a ham-mock, hang a porch swing or simplypull one of those dining chairs/patiochairs out of the way, having a quietspace to reflect outdoors will dowonders for your stress levels.

3 Ways to Create Family-friendly Outdoor Spaces

Page 14: Hawaii Renovation August 19, 2012

Last week, I gave you three tips on how to get thathome sold — and fast. This week, I’m winding downthis topic with my two favorite and most important

pieces of advice. But first, let’s recap what was covered last week:

Tip No. 1: Do a drive-by of your house. Make sure yourhome has the curbside appeal it needs to get people totake a closer look.

Tip No. 2: Set your home apart. If your home or condo isidentical to your neighbors’, look for affordable, easy solu-tions that can make it unique andappealing.

Tip No. 3: Less is always more. Edit, edit, edit! Showcase the space, notthe clutter — and that includesunnecessary pieces of furniture.

Now for my last two tips:

Tip No. 4: Go bold but basic. We’retalking color! When it comes to paintor accessories, the rule for making aspace appealing to potential homebuyers is to stay neutral. No matterhow much you love pinks and pur-ples and tangerines, the potentialhomebuyer may not.

But what you don’t want is blahand boring. So go neutral, but makeit pop. Make it interesting and sophis-ticated by having some bold strokesof color. How? An accent wall thatcould be chocolate or sage green. These colors can make a statement but are still considered“safe” for potential home buyers. Then sprinkle in somemetallics like gold and silver — they’re neutral too, but alsogreat splash accents that tie in with all of your neutrals.

Tip No. 5: Create one unforgettable room. When homebuyers are shopping for a home, on any given day they maysee six or more homes. What’s going to make themremember yours?

Pick the room that has the most potential to be amazing,

and make it AHMAAAZING! Ifit’s an outdoor barbecue space, can you add a TV and create anoutdoor entertainment area? Ifyou have a small room with nowindows, can you turn it into agame room with a card table, orcreate the feeling of a hometheater with an affordable pop-

corn machine in the corner and a comfy, cushy sofa? Takewhat you already have and kick it up a notch so the poten-tial home buyer thinks, “OMG! I LOVE THIS!”

This has worked with many homes I’ve redesigned, dec-orated or staged for sale. Of all the homes a potentialhome buyer might see, what’s going to set yours apart iswhen the husband cannot get out of his mind the unforget-table outdoor barbecue area. Or the wife will say, “I just fellin love with that powder room!”

For many people, a major kitchen or bath remodel is out

of the budget. That’s why this tip is so important. The spaceyou transform could simply be a small corner, an unusedroom or part of an outdoor area. Look closely at that spaceand think of ways to make it unique and memorable.

This photo is a perfect example. When I designed thishome in Hawaii Loa Ridge, there was a covered outdoorspace that was really too small to be anything, but too largeto be nothing. It had a big drain in the middle of the floor. The former homeowners used it as storage, so there wereladders, paint cans and other things strewn about.

It also had incredible views, which meant incredible poten-tial. By simply adding a tranquil faux finish to the wall, affordableinterlocking decking material that hid the drain, a flea marketchandelier, some teak benches and drapes to frame the view, this very small space became an outdoor meditation roomand oasis that people still talked about after leaving the home.

No matter what your price point, try this tip. You can’t dothis with every room, but you can focus on one room andmake it amazing. Then, no matter how many homes poten-tial buyers look at, they’ll want to come back to yours.

X iang Feng Cao got his start in the con-struction industry while working as acarpenter in China. He eventually

opened his own business and workshop therebefore deciding to move to Hawaii in 2000.

The skillful craftsman worked for variouslocal companies until deciding to build his ownconstruction team. Cao, with the help of hisson, Andy, formed Hua Xia Construction inAugust 2008, and the duo, along with a teamof experienced workers, has been assistinglocal home and business owners with theirbuilding and remodeling needs ever since.

“In China and Japan, we can see many his-toric construction (projects) that were built athousand years ago but are still solid andworkable,” said Andy Cao. “Our company would like tohelp our customers build or remodel their homes like that.We always provide high-quality works, friendly cooperationand reasonable cost to our customers.”

As he explains, Hua Xia receives a great deal of businessvia positive referrals and by prospective customers noticingother finished projects.

“Most clients will see a house we’ve built or remodeledin the past as an example of our workmanship,” saidAndy. “We feel confident working as a family to make ourclients happy.”

Hua Xia is capable of handling both commercial and res-idential jobs, although brand-new construction of and ren-ovations to homes have been the most popular requests asof late. Andy said that his company can accommodate var-ious requests, from kitchen and bathroom additions to

adding extra stories and rooms to existing structures andeven building new houses. Hua Xia will handle the designand permitting process all the way through completion ofthe project, building quality structures from the ground up— or in some cases, from the inside out.

Cao and his staff stress customer service every step ofthe way. Hua Xia provides homeowners with detailedmodels to aid in the visualization process and will workto incorporate materials that are both cost-effective andof the highest quality. From minor renovations to multi-million-dollar projects from scratch, Hua Xia is poised tohandle the task.

“We provide customers with a 3-D layout of their proj-ect so they can visualize what their home will look like,”Andy said. “Customers appreciate the quality of work thatwe provide, and a reasonable estimate beforehand that is

The clear choice in the fightagainst water spots, streaksYou don’t have to have beachfront property for your

windows and sliding glass doors to be assaulted byocean breezes. Those wonderful tradewinds that

keep us cool also wreak havoc on glass. If you’ve tried every-thing (or so you thought) to get rid of the streaks and waterspots that obstruct your views, you need to heed the adviceof Harald von Sydow, director of Nano Tek-On.

“Even harsh abrasives don’t seem to remove streaks andspotting on windows and sliding glass doors,” said vonSydow. “We tried everything, too, until we discovered thatby using nano-technology, we could remove the stains andblock most new ones from forming. Cleaning became anon-chore as we found that once we applied the surfacetreatment, just hosing off the glass did the job. Here at NanoTek-On, we use this type of permanent, non-stick invisiblecoating on many different surfaces that have been problemsfor homeowners for many years — until nano-technologywas discovered.”

Von Sydow also uses these types of coatings on unpro-tected floor and bath tiles, especially grout. As he explained,“If you have ever spent hours scrubbing the grout betweentiles with a toothbrush, you can relate to what I am talkingabout. If you have brand-new tiles and grout, I advise gettingthem coated immediately. The coating will cut your cleaningtime and effort by as much as 90 percent.

“Here at Nano Tek-On, we can also treat old tile andgrout. We’ll clean it first and then coat it. The little tooth-brush you’ve been using to scrub the grout can now be hid-

den in a drawer some-where, as you won’t beusing it very much atall, possibly neveragain.”

If you have stone sur-faces in your home(kitchen/bathroom counters and/or flooring) and youremember how nice they looked when they were new, vonSydow said that nano-technology also makes it possible torestore these surfaces to their original luster. He explainedhow coating the surfaces fills the pores in the stone to pro-tect it, creating an invisible shield.

Since most homeowners are concerned about usingproducts that won’t harm them or the environment, it isimportant to note that all of these surface treatments areenvironmentally safe.

Many homeowners also wonder about the white spottingon shower doors and if there is anything to use on it that isenvironmentally safe. With von Sydow’s wealth of knowl-edge regarding keeping glass spot-free, he suggested using alittle unit called HydroFlow that stops limescale and calciumbuildup from forming in plumbing.

“This is the same buildup that causes the water spotson shower doors and bathroom fixtures,” von Sydow said.“Once we clean the doors and seal them, a HydroFlowunit attached to the plumbing in the house — it’s an easyinstallation with no cutting of pipes — will keep most

spots from re-forming. HydroFlow works like magic. It hasa ton of benefits including making water-using applianceslast longer, since it reduces corrosion — one of ourbiggest enemies here in Hawaii.”

Nano Tek-On specializes in environmentally friendly sur-face treatments including sealants for glass and naturalstone, antimicrobial coatings and self-cleaning surfaces. Tolearn more about how you can see clearly through glasswindows, doors and shower doors, and how to cut mainte-nance time and cost, call 395-2996 or visit nanotekhi.com.

Jimmy Suh is a strong believer that a stellar paintjob must be preceded by following proper proce-dures and adequately preparing the surface prior

to covering it.The owner of Deep Purple Painting has been honing his

craft for more than 25 years, and can quickly diagnoseproblems with paint jobs that have resulted in unsightlychipping and peeling. Suh explains that the tedious tasks ofsanding down surfaces and filling in any cracks or imperfec-tions with quality patching materials go a longway in ensuring a paint job’s effectiveness. Hestresses quality and an honest approach tocustomer service throughout each project he’sinvolved with.

“A painter needs to follow the proper pro-cedures,” Suh said. “That’s why there are somany problems here in Hawaii with paintingprojects. You need to sand and prime the areaand prepare it properly. It’s worth the price fora premium paint job that’s done right the firsttime, saving time and money in the long run.”

Suh moved to Hawaii in early 2010 to becloser to family and friends, and brought his successfulpainting business with him to the Islands. The contractorspent nearly 20 years in San Francisco building his business

and cultivating a sterlingreputation for producingquality results. Whetherthe job involves painting ahome’s exterior or a fewwalls of a commercial

space, Deep Purple can cover it.“I’ve been painting for 25 years, and my main goal is to

produce a quality job — that’s the most important

thing,” Suh said. At the onset of each job, Suh confers with

the owner to determine the necessary stepsinvolved in refinishing the desired surfaces. The painter considers many factors includingthe relationships between colors and howthey complement one another, and presentsthe owner with the viable options. Otheraspects that Suh considers include the tex-ture of certain surfaces and what variety ofpaint will coat them in a way that both pro-tects and beautifies for years to come.

Suh has cultivated a host of positive refer-rals from satisfied customers. When meetingwith Suh, customers are encouraged to viewthe completed jobs in-person in order tofully understand the stellar workmanshipthat goes into every Deep Purple project. After the look and feel of the project isdetermined, the client is presented with a

written estimate of both the cost of the job as well as atimeline detailing the work to be performed.

“The word-of-mouth referrals that I receive come fromthe extensive preparation and excellent results fromnumerous jobs, both residential and commercial,” said Suhof many notable projects in both Hawaii and San Francisco.“That’s why people like how I do business.”

Celebrating 25 years ofremodeling in HawaiiFounded by president Carl Gaumont in 1987, Pacific

Isle Contractors Ltd. has been building and remod-eling homes in the Islands for a quarter of a century.

Gaumont describes the company as a small contractingbusiness that has found its niche in residential remodeling.Projects range from kitchen and baths to large-scale reno-vations, additions and new-home construction.

While Pacific Isle Contractors has completed many addi-tions and renovations over the years, older homes built inthe 1930s and 1940s are some of its favorite projects.

“We renovated a number of older homes in theNuuanu and Manoa areas and appreciate the architectureof that era,” said Gaumont. “Some of these homes wereconsidered ‘tear downs’ by other contractors, but aftercareful inspection, we found them quite structurally sound.

“You need to put things in perspective. If you’re going tospend the money on a large scale renovation and 10 per-cent of that cost is necessary for repairs to the structure, you’re probably ahead of the game once you figure in thereplacement costs of one of these beautiful older homes.”

Since oftentimes the clients will be living in the homewhile work is being done, they are kept abreast of thescheduling and scope of work to be performed at any giventime to minimize disruption to their daily lives.“Communication is a high priority,” Gaumont said. “Wewant homeowners to know what to expect on any givenday, so we can address any issues that might arise. Our goal

is to help you attain your dreamhome.”

Here is some feedback Pacific IsleContractors has received from itsclients:

It has been eight years since PacificIsle Contractors did a very challenging, major renovation and addition to our very unique Kailuahome. We were not only extremely happy with the results, butloved the experience of working together with Carl and ourarchitect, Paul Sheffield. We are now looking forward to work-ing with Carl once again, building a new home in Kahaluu.

— Pau and Gail Switzer

We just completed renovating our home in Nuuanu, includ-ing new windows, siding and a family room addition with abeautiful deck for entertaining friends and family. Our experi-

ence with Pac. Isle Contractors has been extremely enjoyable.Carl and his crew are very professional and produce high-quality workmanship.

— Andre Lee

“Your renovation should be fun, not stressful, and PacificIsle Contractors works hard to earn your trust and confi-dence,” said Gaumont. “We want to be your contractor.”For free consultations with Pacific Isle Contractors, call623-4717 or cell number 343-4604.

You know it’s time to drastically cutyour electricity bill by installing asolar photovoltaic (PV) system on

your home, but you aren’t sure how to goabout it.

The answer: It’s easy with Bonterra Solar. There are so many simple options for

financing a new solar system that you’ll won-der why you waited so long to do it, accord-ing to Andrew Yani, founder and principal ofone of Hawaii’s fastest growing solar compa-nies, Bonterra Solar.

“Some people assume that having a state-of-the-art solar energy system in their homeis complicated and costly,” Yani said. “In reali-ty, it’s the easiest and most cost-effectiveway to improve your home, help the envi-ronment and save you money.”

Yani said Bonterra makes the processeasy by offering several purchase or leasingoptions, including getting a “Clean EnergyLoan” from American Savings Bank, whichworks with Bonterra to make solar purchas-es fast and worry-free.

Zero-interest loansAmerican Savings offers zero-interest, six- ,

12- and 18-month “Clean Energy Loans” forBonterra’s solar customers.

The process is simple: The owner of ahome or condo signs a contract withBonterra and then applies for their choice ofloans with American Savings, either in per-

son, online or by phone. There is quickapproval of green loans, sometimes withimmediate conditional approval. Bonterrathen schedules the installation and usuallywithin two weeks, your new clean, greensolar PV system is up and running.

As a bonus, Bonterra customers make noloan payments for six months.

“We’ve had many customers who, aftergoing through the financing and installationprocess, told us how effortless it was andhow they wished they had done it sooner,”Yani said.

Visit “open houses” to learn moreBonterra also holds “open houses” at

American Savings branches, where the com-pany’s consultants are available to talk tohomeowners about reducing electricity bills, their solar energy needs and financing. If youare interested in learning more, stop by thecompany’s open house at American SavingsBank in Hawaii Kai on Aug. 31.

“We enjoy meeting potential solar usersout in the community and letting themknow just how easy it is to enjoy energy sav-ings, benefiting both their wallets and theenvironment,” Yani said.

What is the purpose of a roof sys-tem? Does it simply keep theweather out? Blue tarps will do

that — but, only for a short period oftime — and only as long as the wind isn’tgusty — and, of course, blue tarps areugly!

What we all really want is a mainte-nance-free roof that doesn’t leak, will stayon and will keep us dry during a severestorm. It should help to keep a homecool, be fire-safe and withstand foot traf-fic. We’re looking for a roof that has a 20-year track record in Hawaii’s tough, tropi-cal marine climate, and one that will last alifetime. By the way, it should look good aswell, since half of what you see while pass-ing by is the roof.

The Country Manor Shake (CMS) alu-minum roof is such a system. It was devel-oped by Alcoa almost 40 years ago and iscurrently manufactured in Ohio by ClassicMetal Roof Systems. It comes with a 100percent labor and materials, non-prorat-ed, lifetime manu-facturer’s warran-ty.

Locally, Aluminum Shake Roofing, Inc.has been installing the CMS systemthroughout the Islands since 1989. Rust-free aluminum roofing is not a new con-cept — its advantages have been provenall around the world, with some installa-tions that are nearly 100 years old.

Beauty adds value The first thing you notice about the

CMS roof is its striking appearance.Combining the timeless beauty of hand-hewn wood shakes with 21st centurydesign and innovation, CMS stands outfrom other roofing systems. A CMS roofwill definitely add “curb appeal” to yourhome.

Say goodbye to kilowatts andhello to negawatts

One of the best ways to lower yourelectric bill is to stop using electricity tokeep your house cool. A “negawatt” isthe measure of energy not consumed.

The CMS panel doesn’t get hot inHawaii’s sun thanks to the HI-R infraredreflecting coating and the air space includ-ed under the panel. The FoamGuard “freefloating” EPS insert provides a thermalbreak and is a great insulator as well.

Quiet strengthThe CMS roof system employs a four-

way interlock and stainless-steel fastenersthat actually hold the panels tighter to theroof deck as the wind speed increases. The CMS roof is incredibly strong and it’swalkable, too.

One common question homeownershave about a CMS roof concerns noise.Early metal roofs often had no structuralbarriers to “soften” sound, whereastoday’s housing and roofing installationmethods work together to form an effec-tive sound barrier for your home’s livingspace. Most homeowners actually saythey like the way it sounds.

It’s easy to get a free, clear and detailedwritten estimate. Just call Fred Rehm atAluminum Shake Roofing and he’ll comeby, prepare an estimate and explain every-thing you want to know about your roof.
