ON NOW AT

WARKENTIN - 1929 - 2015. Geraldine Annie Quasso Warkentin peace- fully passed into the arms of her loving Saviour on July 8, 2015 at the Maplewood Manor, reaching the age of 86 years. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother was born January 28, 1929 in Morris, MB to Carl & Katherine Goossen Quasso. Her early childhood had many happy memories. She often referred to her loving father with his cheerful whistling and singing as he went about his work. Sadly, her father passed away when she was 10 years old and her brother when she was 15 years old. Whom she missed dearly. Mom gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on December 23, 1942 in Rosenort, MB, faithfully serving her Lord to the end. When her mother remarried, the family moved to the Landmark area. On April 30, 1950, the year of the big flood, she married me, Elden Warkentin in the Greenland Church, Ste. Anne, MB. Settling on a farm in the Greenland Community, they raised their two sons and five daughters. Mom’s life was filled with all the things that gave her joy; her husband, children, cooking, gardening especially flowers and creating a warm and welcoming home, never turning anyone away. She graciously gave of her hospitality to the many people employed on the farm throughout the years, including the John Gerber family and Fritz and Danielle Nussbaum of Switzerland. The grandchildren doubled her joy and she welcomed each one with open arms, hugs and kisses. A favorite memory of the grandchildren is the elaborate candy bags that were handed out each Christmas. In spite of challenging heart issues which began in her forties, she maintained a positive attitude and rarely complained. Big life changes happened in the spring of 1978 when Dad and Mom moved to a cattle and grain farm near Saltcoats, SK. Once again Mom created a warm and welcoming home and was known for her gracious hospitality. In spite of Mom’s love for her home and family, she supported Dad in his desire for adventure. She accompanied him on many trips, including her ancestral home in Italy, visiting Uncle Clifford’s in Brazil and spending several mission terms in India and Germany. In their retirement years, they built a home in the town of Saltcoats, large enough to accommodate their ever increasing number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Many more happy memories were made in their home in town. As declining health made it difficult for Mom to be at home, she became a resident of the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats for five years where she was lovingly cared for by those who became her special friends. At the end of October, 2014, rooms became available for Mom and Dad in the Maple- wood Manor in Steinbach, MB. In spite of Mom’s rapidly declining health, they made the decision to move to Steinbach. Although Mom greatly missed her home in Saltcoats, she quickly settled into her new home, enjoying the fact that Dad lived in the same building, enabling them to spend much precious time together. She found much comfort in knowing Dad was always there for her. In April, we as a family were privileged to celebrate Mom & Dad’s 65th anniversary together with them. Even though her body grew weaker, the strength of her faith continued to be evident in her positive attitude, her interest and concern for others. Until the very end, she graciously thanked everyone for coming to see her and always reminded them to sign in her guestbook. This was very important to her. In her last days, although she slept much of the time, she still had warm, loving smiles for the people she loved, especially Dad. The family appreciates the care Mom received at the Maplewood Manor. It was evident that Mom loved all the caregivers and had a special place in her heart for Doris Goossen. On Wednesday morning it appeared that her life was nearing the end and she passed away peacefully at lunchtime. We are so thankful her suffering has ended and we believe the Lord has taken her home. She will forever be remembered by and sadly missed by her loving husband, Elden, her children Carol and Dennis Barkman, Swan River, MB, Ethelyn & Myrle Wohlgemuth, Centreville, NB, Edith & Melvin Penner, Ste. Anne, MB, presently serving in Africa, Patricia & Tony Friesen of Bredenbury, SK, Leslie & Cyndy Warkentin, Landmark, MB, Bonnie & Joel Penner, Saltcoats, SK, Elden James & Christine Warkentin, St. Paul, AB, a family friend, Larry Goossen, 27 grandchildren, 46 great grand-children, sister Esther Penner and brother Eugene and Lottie Quasso; sister in laws Irene Penner, Doris Penner, June & Denton Barkman, Irma & Lewis Giesbrecht, brothers in law Louis & Edith Warkentin, Clifford & Naomi Warkentin, Milton Warkentin, Dwayne & Adeline Warkentin, Marlin & Kathy Warkentin. She was predeceased by her parents, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, two brothers, one in infancy, one sister and two brothers in law, and her step brothers and sisters. We want to express our gratitude for the wonderful care she received from all her care givers in the last six years. A Service of Comfort for Family and Friends was held on Monday, July 13, 2015 and the Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Both services were conducted at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Saltcoats, SK with Norman Wohlgemuth, Laurel Wiebe, Narceno Cano and Myrle Wohlgemuth officiating. The Interment Service followed in the church cemetery. Edna was born on September 30, 1919 in Orcadia, SK, the daughter of Fred and Martha (nee Toronitz) Schrader. On September 19, 1937, Edna was united in marriage to Edward Aichele, son of Ludwig and Christina Aichele. The couple made their home on the farm in the Fone Hill/Willowbrook District, where they raised their six children. Ed and Edna continued farming until their retirement in 1974. They lived in Melville for a short time, before moving to Yorkton, to live next door to their son, Norman and his family. Following Ed’s death in 1981, Edna remained in her own home until her arthritis made a move to a smaller space a necessity. She lived into Queen Elizabeth Court until 2011 when she became a resident of

She was the head of the house- hold, and kept busy throughout the years with gardening, canning, quilting, knitting and crocheting for all her children and grandchildren. AND A HALF STOREY HOME

Dormer windows always add charm to a home, and this rambling 1½-storey family home, designed for a large lot, is no exception.

The entry is protect-ed by a glass-panelled awning that is echoed at a window above and shelters the spacious front porch. The compact foyer, which includes a handy coat cupboard, is separated from the open-plan great room by a glass partition.

The great room’s most striking feature is a three-way fireplace that will cast its glow all the

way to the dining area and also brighten the lofty double-height area where it is located. Large windows overlook the front garden.

The dining area will be bright with natu-ral light, thanks to two side windows, as well as French doors that open to a covered terrace. A second, more formal, dining area overlooks the front garden and is located around the cor-ner from the kitchen for easy serving.

The kitchen features a four-seat eating bar and prep island, as well as an L-shaped counter con-figuration to save steps for the cook. There is a window over the double

sink.Adjacent to the kitch-

en, in the connecting cor-ridor between the main house and the two-vehi-cle garage, are a powder room and the laundry room, which includes a storage closet as well as a bench that will be use-ful for removing muddy boots.

Upstairs, the master bedroom overlooks the back garden. Airy and bright, the space features a vaulted ceiling, as well as a walk-in closet. The en-suite includes an oval soaker tub, in addition to a shower stall.

Both the second and third bedrooms look out on the front garden and share a three-piece

bathroom that occupies its own bayed-out niche. Natural light will flood through the sky-light. The second bedroom has a built-in desk, while the third features an extra-deep window sill.

This plan includes an unfinished basement. There is space for a work bench in the double garage, which includes a generous storage area.

Exterior finishes include cedar shakes and stucco, brick accents and partly mullioned win-dows. The garage doors are turned away from the roadway, offering a more attractive aspect to pass-ersby.

This home measures 65 feet, 10 inches wide by 45 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 1,993 square feet.

Plans for design 6-3-674 are available for $725 (set of 5), $820(set of 8) and $975 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges.

Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is avail-able for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and han-dling). Make all cheque and money orders pay-able to “JENISH HOUSE DESIGN LTD” and mail to:

The Saskatchewan Roughriders sit in last place in the Canadian Football League after four weeks. Their record is 0-and-4 and ‘the glass is half full’ types will tell you they are very close and just catching some bad breaks with injuries and the fact they are los-ing by an average of three points a game is proof they aren’t far away from rattling off a winning streak. Well, my glass isn’t half full. I see a team that played like a flat tire on Friday night against a team they should’ve been able to study well to prepare for, seeing as how they played them last week. Instead, they

were outgained 134-17 in the first quarter, never had a lead in the game, and also gave up a long kick return followed by a 15-yard run to start the third quarter. To me, this is a sign of being unpre-pared. Their defense is ranked last in every major category despite being taken over by head coach Corey Chamblin in the offseason. Chamblin isn’t ready to accept fault for the defense. I could be taking him out of con-text, and I hope I am, but his quote to the media on Friday night after the loss was along the lines of, “The one thing I can’t do is play.” That ought to rally the troops and make them want to play for him. Saskatchewan is now 0-and-3 at home and get Kent Austin’s Hamilton Ti-Cats on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium. I can’t see this club winning more than 6 games, and it’s possible that’s a gen-erous figure.

The Roughriders have the most money in the league; which means that while they have to deal with a salary cap; they shouldn’t have an issue putting in place the best coaches, best managers, and best scouts to find talent. Somehow, though, we have a 45-year-old kicker who was cut from another team and also chased away from here in 2005. We have an aging back-up quarterback with no sign of a Rakim Cato or Trevor Harris in site. The two defensive ends look like they are finished with no quality

young guys coming. How does this happen? The CFL is the easiest pro-fessional sports league in North America to be com-petitive in. You don’t have to win every year, but the Roughriders should never ever have a season of ‘rebuild’ where fans are subjected to this non-sense. Look at the New York Yankees. They have major financial resour-ces. They don’t always win the World Series, but they are always relevant. I said in 2013 that when Austin was available, the Riders should have called him and given him the keys to the franchise. Many of you said I was silly and that we already

had the best people run-ning this team. Well, I’d argue that one gimme Grey Cup later the proof shows otherwise. I’d rath-er have Austin.

In Regina last week, there was another news report of a dog left inside a hot vehicle where the temperature climbed well above 40 Celsius. Authorities were called, the dog was rescued, and now the owners have to go through some hoops to get their pet back. What I can’t understand is that with all the awareness that is out there, how come people insist on leaving their dog inside a hot vehicle? To me, this is not an act of ignor-

ance, but rather one of criminal intent. The pen-alty should not be jail, but rather a minute for minute trade with the pet coming out of the vehicle and the owner going in to the vehicle for the exact same length of time. I don’t think that’s too harsh. I could demand the owner wear a fur coat too, but I won’t.

Five service mem-bers have died after a shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week. The perpetrator was a ter-rorist, although people who live in denial are saying he was mentally ill. Earlier this month, nine people were killed in Charleston, South Carolina and I don’t see much argument for men-tal illness in that case. The Confederate flag is to blame in that one. Unfortunately, I’m a skep-tic in each situation. The fault lies at the feet of religion. If you took reli-gion out of the equation of all the disputes we have in the world today, there

would be nothing to fight about. It’s unfortunate to say, because religion is a big part of many of us. Will we see a day where it’s, simply, too danger-ous to allow people to worship? Whether it be Baptist, Catholic, Muslim, Jehovah, whatever. I won-der.

Speaking of the Confederate flag, I’ve seen a number of news reports saying concert goers at Craven and Dauphin showed their racist tendencies by fly-ing them outside their campers. I wonder if any-one in the news media can tell me how many Confederate flags were flown at these same events in 2014? I bet they sure can’t. Just because there wasn’t a mass shooting in 2014 doesn’t make flying the flag any less racist.

Nice person men-tions to Allan Hill, Don Rae, Trevor Kerr, Jamie Brockman, Kristin Karcha, Kristin Moser, and Andrea Cherkas.

View from the Cheap Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the build-ing together, it is frequent-ly a site of heated debate. This week: Is Tiger Woods finished as a professional golfer?

Massive fallI honestly cannot

think of a greater sports fall from grace than Tiger Woods and it has nothing to do with his disgrace following revelations of sleeping with prostitutes.

Obviously, there are some more spectacular falls from grace. Lance Armstrong, O.J. Simpson, Pete Rose and Michael Vick come to mind, but for different reasons. In terms strictly of being the best at something and then sucking, Tiger is king.

Even Brett Favre doesn’t hold a candle because he never should have come out of retire-ment. He was too old to play football any more. Tiger should still have some good years left in him.

Tiger’s irrelevance became official this year when, after 14 years, EA Sports’ Tiger Woods Golf video game became Rory McIlroy Golf.

Since then, the great-est golfer of his genera-tion, who had been cruis-ing to greatest golfer ever, missed the cut at two major tournaments back-to-back for the first time in his career.

Also this year, he has missed three cuts in total, also first time in his career. Currently, the man who holds the rec-ord for most consecutive weeks as world number one (281) and the cumu-

lative record (683) is ranked 226th in the word. And that fall despite the fact he last held the top ranking only a little over a year ago.

There was a time, not that long ago, if you had told me Tiger Woods would not hold all the significant records in golf by the end of his career, I would have laughed.

There are only two he needs, Jack Nicklaus’ 18 majors and Byron Nelson’s 18 wins in one season. The latter doesn’t really count because the tour has changed so much it’s simply not achievable in the modern game.

Is a comeback pos-sible? Well, anything is possible, but I’d say it is remote at this point. Jack, I think your record is safe.

-Thom Barker

Hardly biggest fallIs Tiger Woods fall

from grace the greatest of falls?

Hardly!Ben Johnson holds

that honour given it was a meteoric rise to the heights winning an Olympic gold medal in the 100-metres, and an even faster fall having that medal striped as a result of drug use.

Within a short time Johnson was relegated to racing a horse in a gimmick race, and was poster boy for Olympic drug use at a time when

one’s gut suspects he was among the many, nit the few doing it.

Then there is Barry Bonds who popped more home runs than anyone in major league base-ball history, but has been unofficially banned from the Hall of Fame by base-ball writers who vote in inductees. Yes the same writers who had to be aware of rampant ster-oid use in the game but never wrote the stories; not about the players using, or the trainers and coaches who could not have been so naive not to have known.

There are other examples of big falls, leaving Woods as just another fading sport star..

Woods has won 14 majors in golf, and is still playing a game as a career. Is that a fall?

Sure he missed the cut in back-to-back events for the first time in his career with an early exit in the British open on the weekend.

That though is less a fall from grace and the reality of a golfer whose skills have eroded. Yes, the erosion may be because of off-course issues and distractions, but ultimately he’s just not that great anymore.

And sadly, like a long list of boxers, he keeps trying rather than fading with dignity into retire-ment.

- Calvin Daniels

On the fenceHas there been a

greater fall from grace than that of Tiger Woods?

I’m sure there has been, but maybe not in the world of sports.

I mean, the Aaron Hernandez story comes close, but only at a glance. Dig deeper and you’ll find that Hernandez real-ly was just a completely terrible person that had big time brushes with the law before his most prominent criminal char-ges (namely, murder).

So Hernandez’s char-acter rules him out of any ‘fall from grace’ competi-tions.

Historically there has been, namely when it comes to cultures, civiliz-ations and cities, but that is hundreds, even thou-sands, of years ago.

In the current day and age, Tiger’s fall from grace is trumped by abso-lutely nothing.

At one point he was adored by many, loved by many and envied by many.

He had sponsorships, a beautiful wife, fame, the best caddy in the sport of golf and he was the most successful and dominant golfer in the world.

He also had an affair (affairs, more like it).

And that’s where his downward spiral began.

Now he’s single, he’s infamous; he lost his caddy, his sponsorships and his mistress.

Oh, and his golf game is about as good as Brent Gretzky’s hockey game.

He’s still incredibly wealthy of course, but I bet he feels… Well, prob-ably like he’s incredibly wealthy. But with a tinge of regret.

Maybe?- Randy Brenzen
