OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE - NOVEMBER 22, 2020 THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 (845) 294-5328 - www.sjegoshen.org Just over one hundred of our young people received the sacrament of Confirmation at four liturgies celebrated last Thursday and Friday. We are grateful to Bishop Gerardo Colacicco, our regional vicar, who readily agreed to double the number of ceremonies originally scheduled, so that we could get candidates, sponsors and parents into the church. Thanks, too, to our catechists; to Mary Ellen Hubbard; and to the Knights of Columbus, who served as ushers. The lion’s share of our gratitude goes to Cathy Fife and Clorinda Doherty, who tended to all the usual details, which were only multiplied given our current circumstances. Unfortunately, five of our candidates could not participate because they were under quarantine. Lest they have to wait an- other year, I’ve received permission to confirm them myself; we’re planning to do that at the 10:00am Mass today (Sunday). Please continue to pray for our newly-confirmed, that the Holy Spirit fill them with the fire of His love! + + + I’m going to offer two seemingly contradictory announcements in this section. First, I know that we’re all looking for a little something to lighten the mood and bring some cheer. That being said, I’m seeing more and more homes – both on Facebook and in person – decked out for Christmas; in fact, some were done up well before Halloween! Advent already risks being swallowed up by the world of commerce; I hope and pray that the same thing doesn’t happen in our homes. Let’s give our Advent wreaths the place of prominence for the next few weeks – and not while away Advent in a well-founded desire to leave 2020 in the rear-view mirror. Secondly, given the restrictions under which we’re currently operating, we do need to start thinking about our Christmas Mass schedule. One significant development is that, just last week, Cardinal Dolan gave permission for parishes to celebrate Christmas Mass before 4:00pm on Christmas Eve. After reviewing the results of the recent survey with the Pastoral Advisory Council, and taking into account all the relevant factors, here’s our schedule for Christmas 2020: Thursday, December 24 3:00pm (Church) 3:00pm (Burke Catholic High School) 5:00pm (Church) 5:00pm (Burke Catholic High School) 7:00pm 8:30pm Misa en español Friday, December 25 Midnight 8:00am 10:00am 12:00pm Given the fact that we have to limit the numbers at each Mass, everyone who wants to come to Christmas Mass will need to sign up ahead of time for a specific Mass. Detailed information about signing up will be publicized this week, and will be included in next weekend’s bulletin. The sign-up will go “live” on Friday, December 4 at 8:30am. I sincerely bregret that we need to do this – and I know that many will not be happy with it – but the legal capacity limit under which we’re operating leaves us no other choice.

Just over one hundred of our young people received the sacrament of Confirmation at four liturgies celebrated last Thursday and Friday. Lest they have to wait an-other year, I’ve received permission to confirm them myself; we’re planning to do that at the 10:00am Mass today (Sunday).

After reviewing the results of the recent survey with the Pastoral Advisory Council, and taking into account all the relevant factors, here’s our schedule for Christmas 2020:

Given the fact that we have to limit the numbers at each Mass, everyone who wants to come to Christmas Mass will need to sign up ahead of time for a specific Mass.

We offer our prayers and best wishes to

Gregory Quaglieni and Elizabeth Topf

who will be married at St. John’s on Saturday, November 28, 2020.

It is once again time to start thinking about Christmas. This year, things will look a bit different due to Covid. We have paired up with Catholic Charities to help with the gathering and distribution of the gifts.

You will not see our traditional Giving Tree in the front of the church with tags. Instead, please purchase a toy for a boy or girl 12 years old or younger, and bring it directly to Catholic Charities at 27 Matthews Street in Goshen (drive to the back of the building and look for the blue canopy). This is a toy drive. Please do not buy clothing or shoes. All toys must be unwrapped and dropped off no later than Friday, December 11.

As always, our gratitude for your continued support and generosity!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for adhering to the protocols with which we are all now familiar: • A six-foot separation in the aisles. Please be mindful of this when leaving and returning to your pew for communion, as well as when leaving the church. • When leaving the church, those in the far side pews depart first, starting at the back (i.e., those closest to the doors) and working toward the front (i.e., those closest to the sanctuary). Once everyone on the sides has exited, then those seated in the center of the church may follow. • After leaving the church, please don’t congregate in the narthex or on the front steps. • Please feel free to use the hand sanitizer stations in the narthex.

A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel. Thus says the Lord GOD: I myself will look after and tend my sheep. As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly.

As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. The word of the Lord. R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose. R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul. He guides me in right paths for his name's sake. R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come. R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

A reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all. The word of the Lord. + A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." The Gospel of the Lord.
