As noted in last week’s bulletin, we’d like to offer a Bible study for Lent. Dr. Edward Sri, a well-known Catholic speaker and scholar, has produced a five-part program called A Biblical Walk Through The Mass. We will meet on the Wednesday evenings of Lent (March 11, 18, 25; April 1, 8) at 7:00pm in McCaffrey Hall. The cost of a “student pack” is $20; if you’d like to participate, please visit, call or email the parish office ASAP, so that we can order a sufficient number.

+ + + There is one matter about which I have been putting off writing, but since misinformation continues to abound, it can wait no longer. About a year ago, I received notice that the parish was one of five beneficiaries of the estate of Joan Kozareski, a parishioner who died in November 2018. (The other beneficiaries include three national charities and the Hamp-tonburgh Cemetery Association.) Ms. Kozareski’s assets included cash, investments, and several parcels of prop-erty, including two local farms. Her will specified that all of this was to be split evenly among the five beneficiar-ies. One of the farms, known as the Wagon Wheel Farm, has been worked by a tenant farmer for several years. By various accounts, Ms. Kozareski intended to sell the farm to the tenant farmer, but a deal had not been consum-mated by the time of her death, and no such provision existed in her will. It then fell to the estate, with guidance from the beneficiaries, to determine the disposition of this farm, as well as the other properties. Now it’s not a newsflash to say that money can be the root of much tension in families, particularly when it in-volves an inheritance. Family members may disagree over how funds should be spent; jealousies can arise when one party receives more than another, or is completely left out. (It’s happened in my family, so I know the reality all too well.) The chief difficulty, in our case, is that the three national charities really don’t have a vested interest in local concerns; that’s not an indictment, just a statement of fact. So their primary intention, as far as the prop-erties are concerned, is to realize the maximum profit from their sales, in order to fund the charities’ various works. This is not to suggest that the Hamptonburgh Cemetery Association and St. John’s were willing to give away the store, so to speak, but we’re obviously more attuned to the sentiment in the community, and sought to balance Ms. Kozareski’s generosity with a desire for a just resolution that would satisfy everyone concerned. Unfortunately, a cascade of misinformation began to pick up steam, primarily on social media; this was aided and abetted by both the Times Herald-Record and the Chronicle, where the lines between fact and opinion are regu-larly obfuscated. As a result, I was forced to spend nearly two full days last fall deleting emails from well-intentioned but misinformed supporters of the tenant farmer; quite a number also tied up our emergency phone line. So in the interest of setting the record straight, here’s the scoop:

LENTEN NORMS
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.
All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from Meat.

FASTING means that one full meal may be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength, but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th birthday to the 59th birth-day.

Camp Veritas 2020

It has been stated on multiple occasions that Ms. Kozareski left “several million dollars” to the beneficiaries; the implication is that each would receive a seven-figure inheritance. In point of fact, we don’t yet have a firm total, as not all the property sales have been completed, and there are still taxes, professional fees, etc., which need to be paid by the estate. That being said, I think I’m safe in stating that, when all is said and done, St. John’s will receive somewhere in the ballpark of $500,000. Given well-publicized concerns about both new development and the shrinking amount of farmland in Orange County, it was insinuated that the beneficiaries were only interested in money, and not in the good of the com-munity. This is patently false, and a gross misrepresentation of reality. While one may have an opinion as to what should be done with a particular property, the seller is treading on dangerously thin legal ice if he/she takes a public position on who should or should not be allowed to purchase it. To stretch the “family” imagery a little father: keep in mind that the beneficiaries are five completely unrelated parties, all compelled to sit at the same table (which usually took the form of a conference call) and come to a consensus. That’s no mean feat, especially when the majority of the seats at the table were occupied by folks who have no idea where Goshen is, let alone ever set foot in it.
So what is being done with the parish’s portion of the inheritance? Thus far, we have received disbursements total-ing $200,000, with another $100,000 to come shortly. From these, we paid for the sound system in the church (approximately $45,000 in total); this was a longstanding need, and it made little sense to yolk new speakers in the narthex with obsolete equipment elsewhere. The remainder will be used to pay for the extensive exterior work on the church, which will begin once winter is officially ended. As you may recall, the archdiocese agreed to loan us money for this project. However, we have scaled down the scope so that the balance of our portion of Ms. Kozareski’s estate will cover most if not all of the cost. We owe a debt of gratitude to Joan Kozareski; her generosity to the parish will ensure that our church building re-mains in solid shape for another century. It’s substantial (and often unexpected) gifts like this that allow parishes to undertake major projects without having to go through emergency campaigns or take out subsantial loans. I just hope the next such bequest is for a specific amount, and doesn’t include property to be liquidated! Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
