T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 (845) 294-5328 - www.sjegoshen.org TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - OCTOBER 6, 2019 In last week’s bulletin, I noted that we would not explicitly designate the new area at the back of the church as a “crying room.” This understandably provoked several questions, so I’ll do my best now to put my thinking into words. Many churches, both old and new, include an area – usually a glassed-off side or back room – where parents with small children can go for a breather if and when the children become unusually noisy or restless. Such spaces acquired the name crying room for obvious reasons. The crying room is almost always wired for sound, so that parents can at least hear what is being said; some more elaborate examples include toys and such for the kids. In that respect, the crying room can be a welcome and temporary respite for parents who feel awkward bringing their smaller children to church. While space constraints made it impossible for us to consider adding one here, installing a wall of glass in the new narthex seemed an ideal compromise. One unintended side effect of the crying room phenomenon is that, in churches so equipped, the expectation can develop over time that small children should automatically be segregated to the crying room. In those cases, par- ents with little children who dare enter the church proper are made to feel as welcome as the proverbial skunk at the garden party. I’ve known more than a few families with little ones through the years who have picked up the unmistakable vibe that, at least in church, children should neither be seen nor heard. This is most unfortunate, not to mention antithetical to the gospel, where we don’t have to look far to discover Christ’s special love and concern for the youngest in our midst. I would hope that we can all agree that a certain level of restlessness, especially from smaller children, is to be ex- pected. Thus, I cannot strongly enough urge parents with little ones to bring them to church and try it out for size. Once the new narthex has its windows and doors, it’s there for your use as a crying “area,” as you see fit. At the same time, veteran parents have much to offer those who are learning how to navigate these sometimes chop- py waters. If you’ve “been there, done that,” might I ask you to offer encouragement – and whatever helpful wisdom you might have gleaned through trial and error – to those who are just starting out? To paraphrase the well-known proverb, it takes a parish to help a child grow in love and knowledge of the faith – and there’s no better start than a warm welcome at Sunday Mass. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - OCTOBER 6, 2019

In last week’s bulletin, I noted that we would not explicitly designate the new area at the back of the church as a “crying room.” This understandably provoked several questions, so I’ll do my best now to put my thinking into words. In those cases, par-ents with little children who dare enter the church proper are made to feel as welcome as the proverbial skunk at the garden party. I would hope that we can all agree that a certain level of restlessness, especially from smaller children, is to be ex-pected. Thus, I cannot strongly enough urge parents with little ones to bring them to church and try it out for size. Once the new narthex has its windows and doors, it’s there for your use as a crying “area,” as you see fit. At the same time, veteran parents have much to offer those who are learning how to navigate these sometimes chop-py waters.

The annual ORANGE COUNTY LIFE CHAIN is today, Sunday, October 6 at 2:00pm along Route 211 in Middletown. Please consider joining this prayerful, peace-ful rally for an end to legalized abortion. For more infor-mation, please call 496-0391.

Each year, October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on

October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the rosary by the faithful. More information about praying the rosary can be found at: www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/rosaries

Please join us in praying the Rosary every Sunday at 7:30am, before the 8:00am Mass.

We would like to offer a special thanks to all of our St. John’s volunteers who so generously donated their time and resources toward assisting with our Community Dinner on Saturday, September 20. As the hosting parish, St. John’s parishioners once again demonstrated our Christ-like qualities of compassion, kindness, and unconditional love in the spirit of community fellowship. On behalf of Pastoral Advi-sory Council’s Christian Service Committee, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Let’s continue to build on this positive parishioner commitment through additional community outreach programs. Stay tuned for up-coming activities under the direction of the Christian Service Committee in the coming months.

The Orange Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is sponsoring a tricky tray next Saturday, October 12 in the parish center at St. Joseph’s Church on Cottage Street in Middletown. Doors open at 10:00am; calling begins at 11:30am. Admission is $5 and includes one card of tickets. Refreshments will be available; the hall is handicapped accessible.
