Agnolo Bronzino, The Holy Family with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist (1550)
This Sunday is the Solemnity of the Holy Family
THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH - DECEMBER 27, 2015
Many people experience something of a letdown once Christmas Day comes and goes, which is unfortunate, be-
cause the Church celebrates Christmas for several weeks! In fact, the season ends with the Feast of the Baptism of
the Lord, which this year is celebrated on January 10, 2016. So keep the tree lit and the decorations up, keep the
Christmas music playing, put those last few Christmas cards in the mail, and continue to bask in the joy that Christ
brings – Christmas is far from over!

Some time ago, I wrote about a very effective apostolate called Camp Veritas, a one-week sleep-away “pilgrimage
experience” for teens entering seventh through twelfth grades. Locally, there’s a week in July at Mount Saint Mary
College, and a week in August at Camp Lakota in Wurtsboro. It might be considered a “Catholic immersion
course,” and is anchored in practices like personal prayer, confession, the works of mercy — in short, an encoun-
ter with Jesus Christ, with the hope that our young people become good and faithful disciples of Him. (There are

ST. JOHN’S SCHOOL
The Gift of a Catholic Education
This Christmas, give the gift of a Catholic education at Saint John School. Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of New York are Christ-centered,
academically excellent and welcoming communities that teach students to be life-long learners and leaders energized by fidelity to Christ, the Church, and one another. We invite you to call us at 845-294-6434 to schedule a tour and learn more about our faith-based,
Pre-K, Kindergarten and Elementary school programs.
COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION
Next week, our parish will take up the Collection for the Catholic Communications Campaign. This
collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through
television, radio, social media, podcasts and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our archdiocese
and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection.
St. John’s Rosary Makers are seeking donations of wire rosary beads. They need not be new; if broken, we will fix them. The are going to the inmates at the Orange County Jail. We also enclose a small booklet
entitled, “How to Pray the Rosary in English and Spanish.” Please consider giving your older rosaries a
new life in evangelization. They may be left in the green plastic container on the shelf in the vestibule. If
you have any questions, please call MaryAnn Saviello at (360-5180).
Next Sunday, January 3, 2016 is food pantry
Sunday. Please be as generous as you can to
help the needy of the area.
If any organization is in need of use of the meeting
rooms in the Parish, please contact the office to make
arrangements for the upcoming year.
Thank you.
Please write the amount of your donation on the
outside of your weekly contribution envelopes.
Thank you for your continued generosity.

lots of other activities, too – that’s why they call it
“pray and play!”) Several teens from our parish have
gone to Camp, and it’s been transformative. You can
learn more at www.campveritas.com. Registration be-
gins on January 1, 2016, and tends to fill quickly. The
cost for one week is $370 (if paid in full by April 1;
after that, it’s $400); as I wrote last time, the parish will
cover $100 of that for any of our teens who want to
go. You won’t regret the investment!

Chances are that all of us, at some point, have tried our
hands at crafting “resolutions” for the new year.
Might I suggest some singularly Catholic resolutions
that can help us grow spiritually?
If you have a smartphone, visit the app
store and type in the word “Catholic.” You
might be amazed to find a plethora of Bibles,
prayers, Catholic radio stations, guides to con-
fession……the list goes on. We spend plenty
of time checking email, text messages, and Fa-
cebook. Why not use that down time instead
to learn about our faith?
Learn more about your patron saint(s). We
sometimes forget about them, but the saints
are a veritable army of heavenly friends, ready
to help us through anything and everything.
All we have to do is ask.
Come to daily Mass. It may represent a
sacrifice of time, but the rewards are out of this
world. (And yes – it’s shorter than Sunday
Mass.)
Get to confession on a regular basis. Per-
sonally, I find once a month to be a good habit
(though I never pass up the opportunity when
it’s available, even if it’s been less than a
month). In any event, don’t let months turn
into years. As Msgr. Martin said during the
parish mission, if you can’t remember who the
President of the United States was when you
last went to confession, it’s been too long!
Devote time each day to reading Sacred
Scripture. We sometimes forget that the Bible
is not a collection of books about God, but
God’s word to us! If this is uncharted territo-
ry, fear not – and start small. Better to start
with five minutes a day and build from there.
Pray the rosary (there are plenty of apps to
offer guidance), though as above, if this is
something new, a decade or two at the begin-
ning may be the way to go.
For every Catholic app, there are 6,453
Catholic websites, blogs, or other online re-
sources. (Okay, 6,453 may be an exaggeration,
but you get the idea.) Several are linked on our
parish website (www.sjegoshen.org); many are
a treasure trove of knowledge and wisdom.
Spend time praying in the presence of the
Blessed Sacrament, because at the end of the
day, nothing can replace time spent in compa-
ny with the Lord himself.
Faithfully your priest,
Fr. George Hafemann
