THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 www.sjegoshen.org - (845) 294-5328 - [email protected] When I was growing up, my parents would take us after Sunday Mass to one of the four shrines in St. Mary’s Church in Fishkill. We would each be given a quarter, told to offer an intention, and then light a candle. There was some- thing special about taking the wooden taper, lighting a real votive candle, and then putting the smoldering taper back into the sand. That all seemed to change in the 1980s, when electric votive lights became the rage. The impetus was a reduced fire hazard, especially in older churches; there’s also no mess with electric “candles.” But there’s something spiritually appealing about the flicker and scent of the real thing. Fortunately, two gentlemen from Ireland have developed a new votive candle rack system. What makes the set-up unique is that, as the candle melts, the wax falls into a water trough at the bottom of the rack. As a result, the St. Killian Candle Burning System has been approved and endorsed by Catholic Mutual Group, our insurance company; in fact, St. Killian’s now supplies all of the can- dle racks at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, among other places. We have leased one rack from St. Killian’s; it was installed this week by the stat- ues at the back of the church. I’d be interested to hear any observations or comments about it; if it’s successful, we’ll look to replace the racks at the front of the church as well. + + + Ash Wednesday, March 1, is a little less than three weeks away. We’d like to collect palm from years past, which will then be burned to create the ashes for this Lent. If you have old palm, please bring it next weekend, and place it in the designated receptacle at the back of the church. My only request is that any plastic bags, rubber bands, etc., not be included! + + + In writing about the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal in last week’s bulletin, I should have been more specif- ic. Last year, we “rolled” our Appeal goal into the goal for the Renew+Rebuild capital campaign. As was ex- plained then, this was a one-time expediency, so that we didn’t have to run the Appeal and the capital campaign concurrently. Whereas the capital campaign is for specific physical plant needs, the Appeal supports, among other things, Catholic Charities, the seminary system, and the education system (Catholic schools and religious educa- tion). Gifts may be made online or by mail; I will speak briefly about the Appeal at each Mass the weekend of March 4/5. A question also arose about the various other projects that were part of the capital campaign, including the pews, SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - FEBRUARY 12, 2017 Ss. the floor, painting, etc. While I didn’t mention them specifically last week, nothing has been changed from what was outlined in the campaign prospectus.

+ + + Last weekend’s catechesis on the Mass focused on the liturgy of the word, which comprises one of the two major “divisions” in the celebration of the Eucharist (we’re talking about the other one today). I made mention of seveal resources which make the Sunday readings readily available to us: iMissal is a very user-friendly app, available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, Kindle Fire and Windows

Phone devices. The modest price of $4.99 is well worth it, given that the user gets ready access to the prayers and readings for every day of the year.

The website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has a page that, like iMissal, allows the user to click on a day and pull up the readings. Bookmark usccb.org/readings.

Two very good printed resources are Magnificat (www.magnificat.com) and Give Us This Day (www.giveusthisday.org).

As we continue with our catechesis, I’ll share other helpful books, apps, and websites. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann
