There will be live entertainment, as well as games for the children (some for the grown-ups, too). We’re going to try something a little different this year. Rather than selling tickets or charging a fee, we’re asking each family to bring its own beverages, and something to share; the parish will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, and condiments. The response form is on page 6 of today’s bulletin, and will remain there for the next few weeks. Please mark your calendars. + + + If you’ve ever been a godparent or a sponsor for Confirmation, you were probably asked to provide a sponsor form. It’s essentially a sworn testimony by the pastor or another priest or deacon of the parish that you are a faithful Catholic who participates in Sunday Mass, gets to confession on a regular basis, is married in the Church (if married), and do your ut- most to live according to the precepts and moral teachings of the Church. When I know this to be true of an individual, it’s easy enough. If someone who is a parishioner asks for a sponsor form, but perhaps has fallen away from the habit of Sunday Mass, I ask to meet with that individual, so that I might exhort him/ her to make this a priority – and then sign the form. The procuring of a sponsor form need not at all be a burden, though sometimes it takes a little work to get to a point where I can sign the form in good conscience. A particular difficulty arises when someone who grew up here, or was a parishioner in the past, requests a sponsor form, but has not been to St. John’s in years. It places me (and other priests and deacons) in a very awkward position when we’re asked – sometimes expected – to attest to something that we don’t know to be true. (Frequently, these requests come at the very last minute, when there’s little to no time to work out options with the prospective godparent or spon- sor.) By way of example: once a child moves out of his/her parents’ home and sets up somewhere else, he/she is really no long- er “registered” in the parish under the parents. Much of this has to do with a canonical concept called domicile (from the Latin word domus, which means “house” or “home”), coupled with the fact that parishes have geographic boundaries. Ac- cording to Church law, the parish in which you now live has responsibility for you; thus, if a Goshen native moves to Nanuet, for example, and either owns a home or rents there, the pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in that town is his/her pastor, and would be the one from whom a sponsor form would be sought. Similarly, if you live in Nanuet but worship at St. Ann’s in Nyack, for example, the pastor of St. Ann’s could easily make the attestation required on a sponsor form. If anyone has a specific question on this topic, please do not hesitate to speak with me or with one of the other priests. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JULY 23, 2017

As previously announced, the annual parish picnic will be on Monday, September 4 (Labor Day) at Myron Urbanski Park on Craigville Road. There will be live entertainment, as well as games for the children (some for the grown-ups, too). We’re going to try something a little different this year. We’d like responses back by Monday, August 20, in order to adequately prepare.

+ + + Fr. Jeff will be returning to St. John’s on Sunday, September 17 to celebrate the 12:00pm Mass, with a reception to follow in McCaffrey Hall. Please mark your calendars.

By way of example: once a child moves out of his/her parents’ home and sets up somewhere else, he/she is really no long-er “registered” in the parish under the parents.
