T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 (845) 294-5328 - www.sjegoshen.org THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JUNE 30, 2019 I would like to thank everyone for your patience last weekend as we began our summer sojourn in McCaffrey Hall; I’m grateful, too, for the compliments on the set-up, as well as the constructive suggestions on how to improve it. We had relatively few glitches, so things should go even more smoothly this weekend. A few reminders, items of interest, etc.: During the Eucharistic prayer, as well as right after the Lamb of God – points at which we’d normally kneel – those who are able may stand; worshipers who cannot physically stand that long should feel free to be seated. After receiving communion, every- one may be seated, though some may choose to stand in place for those few moments of thanksgiving; that’s up to each individual. For the reception of communion, we will continue our custom of beginning at the back and working forward; it just seems prudent to stick with the routine we know. Please take extra care in the parking lot in front of the gym, especially when leaving. We had a near-miss last Sunday, which is why the spaces right in front of the doors are now coned off. Several folks asked about the solitary cone sitting in the middle of the gym floor a foot or two in front of the bleachers. This covers a recessed box where the scoreboard control panel plugs in. One of the many charming quirks of our physical plant is that the lights in McCaffrey Hall have individual mo- tion sensors. Thus, when they’re initially turned on, they all stay lit for perhaps a minute, after which each shuts off – only to turn on again when it senses movement. It can be pretty disconcerting until one becomes accustomed to it. Thus, if you see a fixture or two cut out and then pop on again during Mass, rest assured – it’s not a poltergeist! We’ll continue to ask those who attend the 5:00pm Sunday Mass to help collect and stack the Breaking Bread missals on the bleachers after Mass; this is a big help in the take-down each week. The removal of the pews began right on schedule; they filled two semi’s, and arrived at the shop in Middletown by the afternoon of Tuesday, June 18. Work on the floor began the next day and continues apace. In addition, as- bestos abatement in the church boiler room was completed last Saturday; as I write this on Wednesday morning, a crew is here pouring a concrete pad for the new boiler, installation of which will follow. Many folks have asked about the various places on the exterior of the church where it appears that brickwork, etc., has simply been chopped out. The majority are spots where the terra cotta-covered “amortizements” need to be replaced. There is apparently a lengthy lead-time in terra cotta production, and the contractor wants to match up the colors as closely as possible; thus, the need for samples. This project, for which we are taking a loan from the archdiocese, is only held up because the project consultant was delayed in getting the necessary paperwork in. I pray and hope that, before too long, we’ll see scaffolding going up. As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, please continue to pray for peace, especially in the Middle East. We pray, too, for our seniors who graduated from GHS on Friday night! Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann The Sea of Galilee in the evening, as seen from Capernaum; Syria is in the distance.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JUNE 30, 2019

I would like to thank everyone for your patience last weekend as we began our summer sojourn in McCaffrey Hall; I’m grateful, too, for the compliments on the set-up, as well as the constructive suggestions on how to improve it. We had relatively few glitches, so things should go even more smoothly this weekend. A few reminders, items of interest, etc.: During the Eucharistic prayer, as well as right after the Lamb of

God – points at which we’d normally kneel – those who are able may stand; worshipers who cannot physically stand that long should feel free to be seated. After receiving communion, every-one may be seated, though some may choose to stand in place for those few moments of thanksgiving; that’s up to each individual.

One of the many charming quirks of our physical plant is that the lights in McCaffrey Hall have individual mo-tion sensors.

In addition, as-bestos abatement in the church boiler room was completed last Saturday; as I write this on Wednesday morning, a crew is here pouring a concrete pad for the new boiler, installation of which will follow. George Hafemann

Grade Pre-K (age 4) through Grade 6 Volunteers are needed!

Students starting 7th grade in the fall: this is a great way to receive your community service hours for Confirmation and school. Adult volunteers are also welcome.

Registration forms are located in the back of the church. This year we are also offering online registration; a link is available on the parish website and Facebook page.

For more information or to volunteer, please call Debby Sheehan at 845-800-7446 or emai l a t [email protected].

There will be no Bingo on Thursday, July 4th.

A professional Catholic couple (the wife is a pediatric dental hygienist, the husband a safety and security officer transferring to Rockland Psychiatric Center on July 8) is looking for houses in the Goshen area. If anyone in the parish would be willing to rent them a place to rest their heads until they buy their home, they would greatly appreciate it. Please call 631-569-0223.

Please remember to pray daily for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

HEART OF MARY WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

Have you looked for a place where other Catholic women come together? To talk? To pray? To encourage each other? To grow in their faith and fellowship? Look no further…you have found the place.

Heart of Mary Women’s Fellowship meeting the first Monday of each month to celebrate their faith through discussion and prayer. New members are encouraged and welcome at our next meeting, Monday, July 1, 2019 at 7:30pm in the parish center (red building). We look forward to seeing you!
