+ + + As announced last week, Cardinal Dolan will be visiting St. John’s on Sunday, April 17 to cele-brate the 10:a0am Mass. Please plan to join us!

Both the parish and St. John School have up-to-date, easy-to-navigate web-sites: www.sjegoshen.org (the parish) and www.saintjohngoshen.org (the school).

Flocknote is a simple and effective way to receive email or text reminders or updates from us. Registration is simple; just v i s i t www.f locknote .com/SJEGoshen, and you’ll be guided through the process.

+ + + The reconstruction of the front entrance to the church is scheduled to begin the first week of April. I hope everyone has had the opportunity to look at the rendering at the back of the church. This project has been a long time com-ing, and while we will be somewhat inconven-ienced over the next several weeks, the end re-sult should be worth the wait. I appreciate eve-ryone’s continued patience, especially as we have to navigate around the construction.

+ + + I will be away from the parish next Sunday, April 3 for the baptism of my goddaughter, Lucy Thé-rèse Fish. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

BIBLE BASICS 7: THE ISAAC AND JACOB CYCLE

Fr. Peter Heasley

We resume this week our tour through the Book of Genesis. Last week, we took a break to look at the biblical notion of covenant. This is important because God establishes a covenant with Abraham, one that promises descendants for Abraham. Abraham’s part of the deal is his faith. The covenant is ratified in a liturgical act, the Lord passing between the halves of various animals that Abraham had sacrificed (Gen 15). The enduring physical sign of the covenant is circumcision. Saint Paul tells us, especially in his letters to the Galatians and to the Romans, that this is the foundational covenant for the children of God, primary to and enduring past the covenant through Moses on Mount Sinai.

The covenant with Abraham promises children, and the descendants of Abraham now feature in the Book of Genesis. Before Abraham dies, we hear the story of Isaac’s birth (Gen 21), would-be sacrifice (Gen 22), and marriage to Rebekah (Gen 23). After hearing of Abraham’s death, we hear about his other sons and daughters, not the least of which is Ishmael, his son through the slave Hagar (Gen 25).

The first story devoted to Isaac really concerns his twin sons Esau and Jacob (Gen 25:19-34). It is in this story that Esau, the older, gives up his birthright for a little food. This begins the story of the rivalry of these two brothers, one that continues throughout Israel’s history. The only story proper to Isaac concerns his relations with the king Abimelech in Gen 26.

Soon, the narrative turns to Jacob exclusively. In Gen 27, we hear of Jacob’s deception, pretending to be his older brother Esau in order to obtain Isaac’s blessing. Isaac then sends Jacob to his uncle Laban (Rebekah’s brother). This story covers several chapters, from 27:46–32:3, and includes a number of incidents. After Isaac send him away, Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, where God reiterates his promise to give the land to his descendants (Gen 28:10-22). Laban tricks Jacob into marrying Leah before Rachel, having to work seven years for each (Gen 29:14b-30). When then hear of the begetting of eleven of Jacob’s twelve sons, a process shaped by the jealousies of Leah and Rachel (Gen 29:31–30:24).

Jacob then flees from Laban (Gen 30:25–32:3), only to find himself trying to escape his brother Esau (Gen 32:4–33:20). Along the way, he wrestles with an angel, who won’t reveal his name, and who may be the Lord himself (Gen 32:23-32). The Jacob Cycle ends with various stories, including the Rape of Dinah (Gen 34) and another revelation of God’s promise, along with Jacob and Esau’s family descendants (Gen 35–36). Before we hear of Jacob’s death, the narrative turns to Joseph.
