Albert M. Salcido passed away Feb. 7, 2013. Albert was born in Miami, Arizona, on Nov. 26, 1949. He graduated from Globe High School in 1969 and joined the Navy. He volunteered for Vietnam and did one tour. After the military he worked for Cable Communications in Globe and met his wife, Tommie, and married her in 1974. Albert was also accepted into the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprenticeship the same year. He graduated in 1979 as a journeyman wireman electrician in Local 518. Albert and his wife Tommie, with their children, traveled all over Arizona working construction for 13 years. In 1987 they moved to San Manuel. Albert worked underground in the locomotive shop for Magma Copper Company for 10.5 years. He went back to construction and worked on the Mount Graham Telescope, and then continued to travel working construction for five more years. In 2002 he had a heart attack and was medically retired. In June 2011 Albert was diagnosed with brain cancer. On February 7, 2013 he lost his battle with brain cancer. Albert loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, and also loved to play his Xbox 360. He always had a smile on his face, and was a very kind, polite, caring person.

Josephine Valencia Carrillo, 82, born June 7, 1930, went home to the Lord on April 9, 2013. Josephine was very de-voted to her faith, her family, and her friends. She opened her heart and her home to any-one that needed her and will be missed by many.She joins her beloved hus-

band, Armando Carrillo, her parents Refugio and Maria Jesus Valencia and her broth-ers Luis and Raul Valencia.Josephine is survived by

Albert was also blessed with 12 grandchildren – Gabriel Maestas Jr., Marcus Maestas, Esperanza Fraere, Korina Fraere, Antonio Fraere, Sergio Salcido, Sasha Salazar, Santiago Salazar, A.J. Salcido, Michael Salcido, Leon Salcido, and Albert M. Salcido III. He was preceded in death by his father Manuel Salcido, and brothers, Paul Salcido and Manuel Salcido.

Raymond Earl Craighill “Crazy Ray”, age 58, of Oracle, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013. By John Hernandez The Fourth Annual Elks Dog Show was held on Saturday and was a fun time for all of the

participants. There were many raffle prizes given away that were donated by local merchants. Prizes provided

by local merchants included gift certificates from Oracle Inn, Romo’s Mexican Restaurant, La Casita San Manuel, San

Manuel Barber Shop, Mel’s, Jazz It Up Hair Salon, and Patio Café just to name a few. Tom Miller thanked the merchants for

By John Hernandez Julie Formo, kindergarten teacher at the Mammoth STEM School, was named Teacher of the Year at the Southern Arizona Region Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF). The Teacher of the Year award is given to the instructor that has done the most to integrate science, math and engineering into their class curricula. “It is a great honor to receive the award” Formo said. “I was so excited when I found out.” The SARSEF Fair was held on Mar. 11 to 16 in Tucson, where over 200 schools participated. This is the second year in a row that Mammoth Elementary STEM School has garnered the Teacher

of the Year award, as Laura Faulkenberry was the recipient last year. In the past two years, 18 students from the STEM school have won awards for their projects, and they are only going into second grade next year. Formo grew up in Aravaipa and graduated from Ray High School, and she is proud to be a Bearcat. She was a good athlete in high school and had athletic scholarship opportunities after graduating. Her life path changed and she got married and raised a family. After her kids were older, she decided to go back to school. “I didn’t get on a computer until I was forty,” she said. Formo attended Central Arizona College at the

Aravaipa Campus where she graduated and also got her degree from Northern Arizona University. She is an alumna of Phi Theta Kappa, which keeps her in contact with Maren Wilson, one of her former professors and the Phi Theta Kappa advisor at CAC. “Julie has really stimulated a lot of interest in science in Mammoth,” Wilson said. “She’s planting a lot of good seeds.” Formo gave a lot of credit for her success to her instructors at CAC. Flint Anderson told her to stay in the area and give back to the community. She said that Linda Leigh and Nicholas Yensen taught her a lot. Her math mentors were

By John Hernandez Darrell Klesch has been a stonemason for 30 years and it is no coincidence that when the Oracle Oaks Committee decided to make their theme Oracle Rocks!, he would be named as the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade. Klesch’s rock work can be seen all over Oracle in residential projects of patios, retaining walls, fountain features, steps and more through his company, Oracle Stoneworks. Those that have been to Biosphere 2, Sabino Canyon, Molino and Madera Canyon, or up to Mount Lemmon have seen his work. He was working steadily for Biosphere 2 for 10 years when abruptly everyone was kicked out and the work stopped. He said he had not prepared himself for this and had no money or crew. While sitting at home, a picture of his mother fell off the wall. He watched as a “little cotton angel” floated down and landed on the photo of his mother. Klesche looked at the photograph and said

Klesch give some credit to Roberto Chavez and Eddie Lerma, who he says have been instrumental in the forest projects. At Sabino Canyon, Darrel and his crew have built some stone restrooms and rock walls. In Madera Canyon, the crew camped out for eight months, completing 500 flagstone steps and rock walls. They have done work along Catalina Highway and Mount Lemmon, including a 250-foot wall at Aspen View and rock work for the Gordon

Hirabayashi monument on Mt. Lemmon. Gordon Hirabayashi was a Japanese American sent to the Federal prison camp on Mt. Lemmon during World War II because he chose to challenge the relocation and internment of Japanese Americans. Oracle Stoneworks has done some civic projects including rock walls at the Oracle Union Church, a patio at the Acadia Ranch Museum and the “Goddesses of Oracle” monument dedicated to women, located across the street from the Acadia. Klesch calls himself an unlicensed rock artist, saying that as a young man trying to find his way in

life, he spent time visiting the artists at Rancho Linda Vista. “I was influenced by Linda Vista artists only my art is heavy and three dimensional,” he said. Klesch was raised in Bonne Terre, Missouri. In 1959, he moved to San Manuel to live with his mother’s sister’s family. He graduated from San Manuel High School in 1965 and attended the University of Arizona for two years. He was then drafted into the United States Army where as an infantry man, he was sent to Vietnam. In 1973, he moved to Oracle. He is an environmentalist and activist that has fought to keep Oracle from being overrun by high-density developers. He was a docent at Oracle State Park for 20 years where he was an environmental educator and was a founding member of the Oracle Historical Society over 30 years ago. He helped create the San Pedro

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity baseball team took a couple of tough losses last week as they came up short by one run to the Bearcats and one run short to the Yellow Jackets, as the Miners would come from behind in the late innings only to fall short. The Miners traveled to Ray on April 11 taking the loss 8 – 7 in a very close game.San Manuel scored one run the sixth inning and six runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead at 7 – 6. Ray scored

three runs in the third inning, three runs in the fifth, and two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to win the ball game 8 – 7. On the mound for the Miners was Anthony Garcia with T.J Brown catching and Bryan Valdez coming in to relieve, Valdez took the loss. Offensively, John Ruiz went 2 for 4 with a home run and a run scored, Bryan Valdez went 2 for 4 with a run scored, Anthony Garcia went 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored, while T.J Brown went 1 for

4 with a double and a run scored. “We played a better defensive game today and did not make many errors,” said head coach Steve Elmore. “However, Ray is a good team and we waited to long for our bats to start working. We need to be able to hit throughout the entire game and have timely hitting when people are on base and in scoring position.” The Miners then came home and hosted the Yellow Jackets from Tombstone on April 12, taking another close loss

in extras with the Miners going nine innings. The Miners scored one run in the third inning and three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to tie up the game at 4 – 4, sending it into extra innings. The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the second inning, two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4 – 1 lead, but they would battle back to tie it up later in the seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets then scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Lady Miners varsity softball team continues to roll over their opponents with wins against Ray and Tombstone last week. With the wins, the Lady Miners move to an overall record of 19 - 8 (including the tournaments) and 11 - 3 in the section with two losses to Empire and one to Hayden. San Manuel is holding steady with a #7 Power Ranking in the state’s power point system. On April 11 at Ray, San Manuel took on the Lady Bearcats, picking up an 8 – 3 win. In the circle for San Manuel was Lyana Waddell with Mariah McBride catching.

Waddell faced 10 batters in two innings allowing one run on two hits, collecting four strikeouts and walking two batters. Waddell stayed in the circle but Felicia Medina came in to catch. Waddell then faced 19 batters in five innings - allowing two runs on two hits, striking out six and walking three batters. At the plate, Mireya Tamayo went 1 for 3 with a single, a walk, and a sacrifice; Nicole Encinas went 1 for 5 with a single and a stolen base; Felicia Medina went 2 for 4 with a single, a double and one RBI; Mackenzie Vindiola went 1 for 3 with a single and two RBIs; Felicia Gomez went 2 for 3 with

singles, an RBI and a stolen base; Angelica Zuniga went 2 for 4 with singles and Lyana Waddell went 1 for 4 with a single and one RBI. “We didn’t hit as well as I would like to hit in key situations,” said head coach Deanne Brewer. “We ended up with 10 hits, but we left 10 runners on base. We struggled a little with our short game, so we are really going to focus on that. We might need it at the end of the season and we have to be able to execute.” The Lady Miners then hosted the Lady Jackets from Tombstone on April 12, with San Manuel shutting them down 13 – 2 early in five innings. In the circle was Waddell

with Medina catching, where she picked up the win and is now 13 – 6 on the season. At the plate, Tamayo went 3 for 4 with three singles and two RBIs; Alyssa Cuellar went 1 for 3 with a triple, a walk and two RBIs; Medina went 2 for 3 with a single, a triple and three RBIs; Zuniga went 2 for 3 with two singles and three RBIs; Waddell went 2 for 3 with two singles and Analisa Estrada went 1 for 1 with a single, two walks, and two RBIs. San Manuel headed over to Oro Valley on Tuesday to take on the Lady Lions from Pusch Ridge and will return home to host the Lady Vandals from Miami on Friday with the first pitch at 4 p.m.

picture called Blessed Encounters in the Tri-Community area, Tucson and other parts of Arizona

Blessed Encounters movie looking for actorsfor the past year that is nearly done being shot. Alberto C. Ojeda, Fuerte Productions owner and director of the film, says there are only five scenes left to film and a few of these scenes will be shot in San Manuel and possibly Mammoth. He is looking for a few actors and would like to hire one from the area. They are looking for a 15-year-old-looking

male Anglo that can also transform into a 19-year-old. The part is a juvenile delinquent that later becomes an adult criminal. There is no pay for the actor but they will gain experience, exposure and references on their resume. Auditions will be held in the Tri-Community. filming last year in the Tri-Community at the Sun Life Family Health Center in San Manuel. Some of the personnel at Sun Life are in the movie. The Tri-Community has a history of movie makers coming to the area since the 1920s when scenes of the silent film The Mine with the Iron Door were filmed in Oracle. The movie Fire Birds with Tommy Lee Jones and Nicolas Cage had

scenes shot in Mammoth and around the Galiuro mountains. In San Manuel, the made-for-TV movie Powderkeg had scenes shot by the Magma railroad line and used one of Magma’s old steam engines. This was the pilot for the western TV series Bearcats, which starred Rod Taylor and Jon Cole. Other movies have been filmed in the area and along the Copper Corridor.

They imparted all their knowledge into us,” Formo said. “I learned STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at the college level. It made teaching STEM at the kindergarten level easy.” Formo’s first teaching job was in Tucson at a charter school. She chose the school because all the students had computers at their desk. She got tired of the commute and when she saw online there was an opening in Mammoth for a kindergarten teacher, she applied for the job, where she was hired that same day. She has been teaching for the Mammoth-San Manuel School District for six years, two years as a STEM teacher. She has also taught

the past four years at Central Arizona College’s “College for Kids” program. “I am a teacher at heart” she said. “I love teaching kindergarten and first grade. I can teach them to think. I can teach all the fundamentals that they can build on. Our School is doing well. The kids try so hard and give it their all.” Formo and Faulkenberry, along with four of their students, attended a dinner at the TEP building. The kids were chosen by drawing their names from a hat. Julie took Mia Gutierrez and Johnny Smallhouse, Laura took McKenzie Yubeta and Jose Cervantes. The kids had to present the project and answer questions from the sponsors and scientists. ECO Festival at AravapiaBy Nina Crowder It was a beautiful weekend for outdoor activities, and the Eco Festival had a wide array of events and fun for everyone. The exhibits at the Central Ari-zona College were archaeology

information, food and drinks, a bounce house and rock wall, a fun time for the whole family. There were limited tours that are normally closed to the public to Cook’s Lake Property and TNC Preserve/Double Check Ranch. The Bureau of Reclamation and

Aravaipa area hosts first ever Eco Festival The two had several birds in their nets to show us, including a green and yellow chat and a red cardi-nal. Leitner explained to us each bird that was caught, the time and location of the catch, then they identify the species of the bird and a little numbered metal band is put on the leg of the bird. After the band is securely put on the bird they check for any rough edges and make sure to smooth them out to help prevent the bird getting caught up in something do to the band. All of the information is immediately put in the com-puter, including the number of the band that is put on the bird and all the information gathered. Attending the bird banding tour was very educational, and every nature enthusiast is encouraged to attend if given the opportunity.

The many vendors that helped make this day fun filled included Tucson Audubon Society, Arizona Field Ornithologists, Arizona Riparian Council, US Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wild-life, Arizona Game and Fish, Jojoba Beef, Enriqueta Flores-Guevara, The Nature Conservan-cy, Canyon Wren Ranch, Lower San Pedro Watershed Association, Aravaipa Heirlooms and the Ari-zona Department of Forestry. Those interested in seeing Cook’s Lake or TNC Preserve/Double Check Ranch areas and were not able to attend this last weekend can contact the Salt River Project at (602) 236-3333, SRPNet.com or the Bureau of Reclamation at (602) 364-7880.

Salt River Project gave insight-ful and informative tours of both these private areas. Many people were able to par-ticipate in the 7B Nature Trail, located at the Copper Creek Crossing of the San Pedro River east of Mammoth and is available to take throughout the year. According to Bureau of Recla-mation tour guide Diane Lause, the Bureau purchased the Cook’s Lake/Adobe Preserve from 1992 to 1997. There were originally three different property owners, a private land owner, the state land department and Asarco. The land was purchased to help protect the existing habitat. The San Pedro River is recog-nized for its environmental values and people have been trying to protect and preserve different areas along the San Pedro Valley. The EPA and US Army Corps of Engineers issued regulations gov-

erning compensatory mitigation for authorized impacts to wet-lands, streams and other waters of the U.S. under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. These regula-tions are designed to improve the effectiveness of mitigation to replace lost aquatic resource func-tions and area. Lause recalls when Cook’s Lake use to have constant water flow, though it is dry now. She has been a biologist for thirty years and truly enjoys her work and doing her part to protect endangered and special places. She has seen this area go dry three different times over the years. As we were guided through the trees, grass and colorful scenery we came to the birding station. Wade Leitner obtains informa-tion from birds in this area for Migratory Avian Population Study (MAPS). Leitner and his partner Ben set up mist nets in areas of Cook’s Lake Preserve that stretch 50 feet across to humanely capture birds and process them for data analysis. This amazing area is a wooded wetland and very plush with white wild roses, ash and willow trees and amazing varieties of birds. Some of the many birds in this particular area are grey hawks, coopers hawks, northern cardinals, yellow warblers, summer tanagers and oriole, just to name a few. The nets are numbered, so they know the location of where the bird was retrieved. The nets are set up for about four hours at a time and they are checked fre-quently for the birds. Once a bird is caught in the net, they are gen-tly removed and put into cotton bags and taken to the bird station for analysis and then immediately released. The two researchers perform a procedure called banding which is used to obtain ideas about bird population. The information they are obtaining is the bird species, abundance, health, breeding status and molt types. This complete process was very interesting, in-cluding the weighing of the bird by putting it into a cylinder con-tainer that it can’t back out, placed on a small scale, then released.
