PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. - Cenpatico of Arizona, the Regional Behavioral Health Authority for Pinal County, is awarding $25,615 in Community Reinvestment Grants to three Copper Area organizations. The grant awards are part of $322,658 that Cenpatico is giving throughout Arizona to help the communities it serves. “Cenpatico views itself as a partner with the communities we serve and the awards are part of our overall plan to improve lives in the places we operate,” said Terry Stevens, chief executive officer of Cenpatico of Arizona. “Giving back to the community is

something we look forward to at Cenpatico.” The following organizations will be receiving Community Reinvestment Grants from Cenpatico including the Oracle Community Center ($1,800 for community center improvements), El Centro Youth Center for Excellence in San Manuel ($7,735 for new musical equipment) and Town of Superior ($16,080 to the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition for the Win to Swim and Cinco de Mayo events). In addition, Cenpatico is awarding $7,500 to the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The money

will be used to buy books for the Reach Out and Read Arizona program in Gila and Pinal counties to promote healthy social and emotional development in young children. WINKELMAN, Ariz. – Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus will add three new classes this spring for those students interested in emergency medical services or welding. Each class is $72 per credit hour for Arizona residents; course material and lab fees may apply. The Aravaipa Campus is located north of Tucson between Winkelman and Mammoth along Highway 77 in the rural mountains of beautiful eastern Pinal County at the entrance to the Aravaipa Canyon. For those looking for a career in emergency

medical services, EMS 125 - Emergency Medical Technician is an eight-credit course that will be held Saturdays beginning Jan. 19 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The course follows the current National Standard Curriculum and Arizona State Department of Health Services EMS Division state statutes. The curriculum emphasizes an assessment-based format with the focus on airway control, and rescuer and patient safety. Infection control is addressed at every level of care. New skills have been added to include patient-assisted medications and use of an

AED. This training program is a state-approved program with a medical director and is updated to state standards as required by the ADHS. By John Hernandez The Town of Mammoth has purchased a new Caterpillar 420 F backhoe loader. The loader was purchased for $104,000 from Empire Caterpillar in Eloy. According to Public Works Director David Garcia, the town saved $35,000 on the purchase price by “piggybacking” on an order from the City of Tucson.

The new loader is more fuel-efficient, has an enclosed cab for safety and comfort, comes with a 24” and 18” buckets and has four-wheel drive. Purchase price included operating and maintenance training for staff. Town of Mammoth Public Works employees have been busy doing clean up and maintenance work around town. They have been putting

in sidewalks along the little league field as well as curbing for drainage control. The cemetery has been cleaned up and walkways and railings have been painted. Using recycled paint to save on cost, they have been painting walls and benches around the park areas, little league field, community center and the swimming pool.

Town of Mammoth Public Works update

ORACLE, Ariz.—A team of 11 members of the National Civilian Com-munity Corps (NCCC), an AmeriCorps program, has been stationed at Oracle State Park for five weeks to perform general park main-tenance. From Nov. 20 to Dec. 19, 2012 the team of 18 to 24 year olds will be working at the short-staffed park, per-forming trail clearing and building, forest fire mitiga-tion and firewood collec-tion, ranch house cleaning and a variety of other tasks. “We’re very happy to have the help and youth-ful energy of the NCCC crew,” said Jennifer Rinio, Park Ranger at Oracle State Park. “They’re honing their handyman skills with a va-riety of park maintenance projects, as well as getting the opportunity to consider their own roles and talents as future land stewards.” The state park, which serves as a wild life refuge, educational center and recreational area, is open partially throughout the year, so much of their work will be in preparation of its reopening in Feb. The team has a diverse background, comprised of members from all over the United States. Despite their close encounters with coyotes and cacti, and other elements of the Arizona wilderness that are foreign to most of them, the team is enjoying their stay and work at Oracle State Park. “This project has definitely taken many of us out of our comfort zones,” said the NCCC crew’s Team Leader, Casey Bartlett. “Living in tents for weeks on end and being in this environment

has been a growing experi-ence.” AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, na-tional service program in which 1,200 young adults serve nationwide each year. During their 10-month term, Corps Members – all 18 to 24 years old – work on teams of eight to 12 on projects that address criti-cal needs related to natural and other disasters, infra-structure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, and urban and rural development. Members work on a se-ries of different projects, typically lasting six to eight weeks each, to men-tor students, construct and rehabilitate low-income housing, respond to natural disasters, clean up streams, help communities develop emergency plans, and ad-dress countless other local needs. The Southwest Region campus in Denver is one of five regional hubs in the United States and serves eight states in the southwest part of the country. The other campuses are located in Perry Point, Md., Vinton, Iowa, Vicksburg, Miss. and Sacramento, Calif. In exchange for their service, Corps Members receive $5,550 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans. Oth-er benefits include a small living stipend and room and board. Local Knights of Columbus voted last Wednesday to continue supporting Boy Scouts of America Troop 822 in San Manuel for their third year. Troop leader Terry Newman and his son Alec told the Knights about the troop’s many activities and awards, including a trip to Tucson missile manufacturer Raytheon which encouraged Scouts to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to Newman, Troop 822 won numerous awards at Camp Raymond last summer, including first place in troop competition.

Scout Alec Newman shared plans for an Eagle Project to install solar water heaters for the San Manuel pool. The project puts Eagle Scout candidates in a position of organizing, leading and supervising local volunteers, adults and other scouts, on a major project. The Scouts and Knights coordinate on projects, including cleaning Highway 77 between mile post 97 and 98. According to Newman there are 10 boys in troop 822 with an expected five or six new members who have expressed an interest in joining. The Knights’ support includes a Cub Scout pack.

By Chaille McGrew San Manuel Library Chairperson A piece of San Manuel’s history has been refurbished thanks to Ms. Ronning and some of her Advanced Art Class members. In the early 1990’s a local resident, Wally Vogel, painted a silhouette of the Magma/BHP smelter and plant site on the front wall of the San Manuel Library. Of course that silhouette can no longer be seen in reality as the site has been cleared. But thanks to Mr. Vogel’s talent, memories of this important part of our town’s heritage is there to be seen for now and the future. The silhouette was painted in black and after 15-plus years, the desert sun had done a good job of fading the paint. The Library Board was very concerned that the fading would lead to the eventual loss of this historical gem. The Library contacted Ms Ronning of the San Manuel High School Art Department and she and three of her advanced students brought the art work back to its original freshness. The refreshing was done freehanded by the talented students and their teacher. Ms. Ronning has been the San Manuel High School art teacher for three years. Students that participated in this service project were Kimberlee Ostrander, Iris Hill, and Wyatt Fessenden. The Library Board and Staff want to thank this group for preserving part of San Manuel’s past. Don’t forget that library fines can be paid off during December with food donations. One item equals $1in fines. Food items will be donated to the Tri Community Food Bank

Are you brave? Think you can handle a little cold water? Then get ready to take the “Plunge.”The Polar Plunge will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at the San Manuel Pool for those brave enough to get wet. A school fundraiser, the Polar Plunge is open to students and adults. A $20 entry fee will get you a dip in the pool, hot chocolate or coffee and a snack plus the Polar Bear t-shirt. You must get in the water to receive your shirt. If you are under 18 you will need a parent or guardian’s signature. The Polar Plunge is a

fundraiser for the San Manuel High School Class of 2016. Groups of 10 or more are welcome with a chance to raise a percentage of the money raised for the group. These groups could be the swim team, baseball team, etc. You can also designate which school in the Mammoth-San Manuel School District receives your $20 entry fee by checking the appropriate box on the registration form. The event is sponsored by the Mammoth-San Manuel Community Schools and the Class of 2016. You can get a registration form at www.facebook.com/

msmcommunityschools or you can pick one up at Community Schools. They can be turned in at any of the schools.Polar plunges are done annually around the country as fundraisers. Usually they jump into the ocean or a lake but the San Manuel pool should provide a nice chilling bath. Come out and support the event. If you don’t enter come out and watch the daring divers as they take the Polar Plunge. Provide moral support for them. A friendly push may be needed to get them in the cold water. More than 2.5 million youth participate in the Elks National Hoop Shoot contest annually. This contest is open to boys and girls ages 8-13. Contestants age groups are determined by their age as of April 1, 2013. This year’s contest will be held at the San Manuel Jr/Sr High School Gym on

Dec. 15. Sign in will start at 8:30 a.m. Please bring your birth certificate. Each contestant will have a chance to win awards. Winners from each category will advance to the District Competition, then to the State Competition, and then Las Vegas for the Regional Competition. Winners of the regional contest will

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Lady Miners varsity basketball team hit the court running at St. Gregory High School in Tucson taking part in the Boyd Baker Tournament on November 19, the Lady Miners took on Benson taking the loss 58 – 27 and also lost a close 35 – 30 game to Desert Christian. The Lady Miners faced off against the host the Lady Hawks from St. Gregory in the first game of the tournament taking the loss 60 – 24. San Manuel was outscored 34 – 16 in the first half and came up short in the second half only scoring eight

By Frank Smith The San Manuel varsity basketball team opened up the season in Tucson at St. Gregory High School in the Boyd Baker Tournament, the Miners faced off against some tough opponents winning two games and losing two. On Nov. 19, the Miners fell to Desert Christian 41 – 53 the top scorers for the Miners were Andres Sierra who scored 20 points and Andy Monfred scored 16 points. The Miners took on Tohono O’Odham on Nov. 20 and came away with the 49 – 12 win with Andy Monfred scoring 17 points and Andres Sierra scoring 14 points. San Manuel dropped the game against ST. Gregory 30 – 42 on Nov. 21, Andres Sierra scored 13points and Andy Monfred scored 12 points. Also on Nov. 21, San Manuel took on Greenfields picking up the win 63 – 56, leading the Miners was Andres Sierra who scored 19 points, Andy Monfred scored 17 points, and Jordan Peasley chipped in with 11

Miner Cagers open the season up with tough gamespoints. Head Coach Ryan Sichting said, “Overall it was a successful tournament. We played some really good competition and we competed. Defensively we played very well in the tournament. On the offensive side of the ball we

struggled at times. We need to find other scorers besides Andy and Andres. In the two games we lost we were winning at the half. So when we play good teams we need to figure out how to play a complete game. Our biggest weakness is definitely experience so this

tournament will help us out down the road.” The Miners hosted Thatcher on Nov. 29, the Miners took the 59 – 16 loss, the leading scorer for the Miners was Andre Sierra with five points. The Miners headed up to

Tucson on Nov. 27 to take on Immaculate Heart, bringing home the 46 – 30 win. The Miners scored 12 points in the first quarter while holding Immaculate Heart to four points, the Mines extended the lead by scoring

22 points to eight points by Immaculate Heart in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Immaculate made a run outscoring the Miners 13 – 3 in the quarter but the Miners held on scoring nine points to Immaculate Hearts five points to secure the victory. Coach Jungbluth said, “The CDO game was 49-20, they shot the lights out from the three point range and we struggled again shooting 18% for the game.” The Lady Miners then headed up the hill to Globe to take part in the Copper Cities Tournament starting on November 29th with San Manuel facing the Lady Braves from San Carlos in the their first game of the tournament. San Manuel took the 13 point loss 40 – 27, the Lady Miners outscored San Carlos 19 – 18 in the first half but could not keep pace in the second half as the Lady Braves out ran San Manuel 22 – 8 to seal the victory. Stepping up for the Lady Miners was Alexis Garibay who scored a team high 12 points with one rebound, two assists, and two steals, Angelica Zuniga came up big with eight points, pulling down six rebounds, and taking three steals, Kadi Monfred scored three points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out three assists, Analisa Robles scored two points and grabbed three rebounds, Maximilliana Lara scored one point and pulled down eight rebounds, and Asha Quintrero scored one point and grabbed four rebounds. On November 30, the Lady Miners took on and took down the Lady Vandals from Miami beating them 26 – 14, San Manuel out scored Miami 12 – 3 in the first half and kept the game out of reach by outscoring the Lady Vandals 14 – 11 in the second half to take the win. the Cibecue game, the girls played better but not good enough to win, again shooting percentage was low. Miami was 3-0 when they played us, we started strong and played a good first half, in the second half we played poorly until the last four minutes of the game. Against Morenci, who was by far the best team in the 14 team tournament beat us easily with their pressure 52 – 21.” The Lady Miners will host Thatcher today with the JV playing at 5pm and the varsity will take the court at 6:30pm.

However, many groups oppose the mine because of environmental concerns. They argue the push for a federal land exchange bypasses the usual regulatory process that most mines encounter. “What Resolution and its political allies don’t mention is the land exchange sidesteps critical safeguards provided by other federal laws,” said Roy Chavez of Concerned Citizens and Retired Miners Coalition that opposes the land exchange. Don Steuter, Conservation Chair for the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter said there has not been accountability

for potentially negative impacts to water resources and other environmental harm. “Resolution Copper does not address the enormous costs, including environmental, that this mine will have,” he said. Featherstone argued the copper market is slowing down and Superior’s economy is tied too heavily to the RCM, which will be subject to Rio Tinto’s navigation of the copper market’s ebbs and fl ows. “[The company is] going to do that based on their bottom line, not what’s good for the town or the region,” he said.
