Editor, San Manuel Miner: This is written in response to all the letters that have been published in the last few letters to the editor. First let me reiterate that neither Jennifer Carnes nor Rachelle Sanchez is

Patricia Johnson. As for department heads being hired and leaving after only several months of service, well you can thank certain council members for that. Who would stay to be berated and bullied for a position? It is almost impossible

Letter to the Editor: Responding to recent letters from Mammothto do your job when you have them on your back all the time. You can never do well enough for them and when you don’t do what they want, then you’re bullied in meetings and in public. You want peace and positive team work? Then stop bringing all the negative comments to the meetings. Be a part of the solution and not the problem. The last editorial once again begins with let’s get out and vote! Then in the same breath it turns around to only prove who the council members that need to be removed from council are. How is that team work? Wickham, Barcelo and the other three do not need to have a seat on the town council; their interests are not for this community but their own personal agendas. You claim the town’s best interests are your concern? I think not: you have a recall that is costing this community money. This

money could have been used elsewhere in the town, not for a recall. The reason why the others were voted onto the council is for their different view from all the sides in Mammoth. After all, isn’t this the United States? So why it is if the vote doesn’t go your way, in your opinion, these people are no good? Month after month you heard the community come and ask that Mr. Estrada be given the Public Works position. The very same people Wickham and Barcelo and Romo bring to the meetings. Yet when the Town Clerk brought it to Council to change the job description or the resolution, so that he may qualify for the position, no one directed staff to look into the matter and bring it back for a vote. I know why: because it was the Town Clerk bringing it up and not them. Even though they

has been pushing for it, they denied him the position. Is this team work? Or wanting the best for your employees? I think not! So I do agree. Please

go out and VOTE. It’s time to remove these two from office and not even consider the other three! Do what is right for the town./s/ Patricia Johnson

Compiled by Mila Lira At press time Copper was being sold at $3.80 a pound. Copper has recently reached a five month high. BHP – Pinto Valley BHP Billiton announced that it will restart mining at its Pinto Valley operation. The mine, which will produce copper and molybdenum concentrate, will have annual production capacity of approximately 60,000 tons of copper in concentrate. The project will create approximately 650 new jobs with mining expected to resume at the end of the 2012 calendar year. BHP Billiton Base Metals North America Asset President, Wayne Isaacs, said: “We are pleased to be resuming mining operations at Pinto Valley given the robust investment case and the potential for an extension to current reserves. We will be hiring more than six hundred new team members and look forward to working with local communities to safely restart

the mine.” Peter Beaven, President BHP Billiton Base Metals, said: “The US$195 million investment at Pinto Valley will add valuable copper production to our Base Metals portfolio. As we look forward, our business is particularly well placed given strong growth anticipated at both Escondida and Antamina in the short to medium term.”Tombstone Mining Tombstone Exploration Corporation announced today that they has applied for new State Exploration Permits for minerals, including Gold, Silver and Copper in the eastern edge of the Tombstone Mining District. These applications should be executed and finalized by the Arizona State Land Department within the next sixty days. The Additional Permits, once approved, will encompass 2,157 acres in Cochise County, Tombstone, Arizona, adjacent to the 100%

Coolidge, Ariz. - Lifelong Pinal County resident and democrat Mary Bateman-Espinoza has announced her candidacy and campaign for the office of Pinal County Supervisor - District One. Bateman-Espinoza is the former Public Fiduciary for Pinal County. She retired from that position in 2006 after 30 years of public service providing support and advocacy to elderly and vulnerable adults residing in the county. Since 2007, Bateman-Espinoza has been self-employed providing professional fiduciary and case management services. Throughout her career, Bateman-Espinoza collaborated and created liaisons with public and

private organizations to develop and improve the quality and delivery of health and social services to Pinal County residents. Bateman-Espinoza has extensive work experience in efficient planning, organizing and directing the duties and responsibilities of public service agencies, which is vital during tough economic times.Meaningful District Representation Beginning in 2013, Pinal County will seat five supervisors instead of three. This is a direct result of the county’s population growth over the past several years and it should provide a more balanced representation

of the county’s citizenry. In the course of the growth, District One has experienced less population increase than most parts of the county. This district is very scenic, provides for much of the county’s “wilderness” recreational activities and it provides a large part of the county’s agricultural, dairy and mining endeavors. Bateman-Espinoza stated, “We want this district to benefit from the economic growth Pinal County will experience, however, we also want to ensure the district’s distinct characteristics, local interests, values and histories are protected. As supervisor for District One, I will be the voice

Mary Bateman-Espinoza to run for Supervisor

that represents the area’s “character,” and, at the same time, work to ensure the development of vital local economic opportunities.” Bateman-Espinoza said, “I care deeply for people, always welcome input and find fulfillment in improving the lives of others. Clearly, our county needs leaders who will work with others to find solutions to our concerns. I’m very excited about the challenges, growth and opportunities which lay ahead for our county.” Bateman-Espinoza concluded, “I have the education and experience necessary to understand the government process. I have spent the last 35 years protecting, serving and advocating for vulnerable populations. I have advocated for their rights, desires and best interests in our courts system, as well as with federal, state and local government programs. I have the courage to stand alone, if need be, to ensure individual rights are not ignored. I pledge to serve as supervisor for the people in District One with that same sense of ethical

and moral responsibility.” Biographical information Bateman-Espinoza was born and raised in Oracle and has lived in Coolidge since she and her husband John were married in 1977. Mary and John raised five children and they have 10 grandchildren. Bateman-Espinoza has a Bachelor’s Degree

and Master’s Degree in Police Administration from Northern Arizona University and a Master’s of Counseling Degree from the University of Phoenix. She is a licensed professional fiduciary through the Arizona Supreme Court and she is a Certified Guardian through the National Guardianship Foundation. In 1976, Bateman-Espinoza was appointed as the Pinal County Public Fiduciary (Public Guardian) and she served in that position for 30 years. From 1991 until her retirement from the county in 2006, she

simultaneously served as Director for the Pinal County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Pinal County Division of Behavioral Health. Bateman-Espinoza now owns and operates the private fiduciary practice she opened in 2007. Over the years, Bateman-Espinoza has developed significant insight and knowledge relative to the health and social issues concerning our aging population and vulnerable populations. She has an extensive background in working with and advocating for older adults, the frail elderly, developmentally disabled individuals and people with mental illness.

By John Hernandez Thirteen members of the Oracle Fire Department reported to the Mountain Vista School track on Sun-day morning in preparation for their physical fitness qualification run to be red card certified. A red card means the firefighter is qualified to work on Wild Land fire crews. Firefighters must renew their card each year by completing a refresher course and completing the physical fitness run. The individuals have to wear a vest weighing 45 pounds and must complete a three mile run, walk or crawl within a 45-minute time limit.

CERT and Firewise Board members were there to time them as well as cheer them on. Fire Chief Albert Ortiz and Battalion Chief Larry Southard attended to urge their firefighters on. The volunteer timers made sure the runners were notified if they were behind or ahead of the pace needed to complete the run on time. The runners encouraged each other while those on the sidelines cheered and talked to the runners moti-vating them to push them-selves just a little harder. A few of the firefighters had a tough time but when it was all over, all 13 Oracle Fire Department firefighters qualified for their red card.

Company-owned Zebra property of 2,000 acres. The property is almost adjacent to the northern boundary of the Hay Mountain property of Liberty Star Uranium and Metals Corp. that has recently had its own 43-101 report completed on the Tombstone Mining District and is currently conducting an active exploration program that they claim has great potential for the discovery of copper, moly, gold and other metals. The Zebra Prospect is a disseminated gold property located in Cochise County, Arizona, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Tombstone, in T20S, R23E, Sections 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33 and 34. The property totals 4,157 acres and consists entirely of State land for which Arizona State Prospecting Permits have been secured or applied for. It is believed that the prospect lies within the metallogenic zonation halo of the Tombstone District. The shallow ores of the central

district were known to be high in silver and lower in gold. Conversely, and in accordance with zonational patterns, the Zebra Property has high gold, and relatively moderate silver values. During a detailed mapping program during the 1980s, thirty-three samples were collected of jasperoid, jasperoid breccia, silica vein material, hematitically altered silty limestone, dolomite and silicifi ed rhyolite porphyry. Seven of these samples assayed >.20 ounces per ton gold and another three assayed >.10 ounces per ton gold. The highest assay was 1.0268 ounces per ton gold collected from an outcrop of black to red jasperoid breccia. These historical assays strongly support previous assay data from the property and suggest the occurrence of a large bulk tonnage disseminated gold deposit on the property. Geophysical surveys conducted on the property in the 1980s also suggest the possibility of a gold skarn deposit at depth. Alan Brown, President of Tombstone, stated, “With prices for metals at historic high levels, the time to move

aggressively forward is now. We are currently planning an active exploration and near term drill program for the Zebra property based on recommendations in our new 43-101 and a report prepared for Asarco in the 1980s.” The Tombstone Exploration Project is an exploration and development project within the historic Tombstone Mining District, Cochise County, southeastern Arizona. Detailed studies of the minerals of the Tombstone Mining District have shown a large number and wide assortment of mineralization including silver, gold, copper, lead, and zinc minerals, which have been described along with manganese, tellurium, molybdenum, and vanadium. Although Tombstone is famous for bonanza silver deposits and is essentially a precious-metal district, the porphyry copper model of Lowell and Guilbert (1970) suggests the presence of a buried porphyry copper deposit at depth. Tombstone has the minerals rights to 9,700 acres of historical mining land and is the largest land holder in the Tombstone Mining District.

By John Hernandez Former Pinal County Sheriff Frank Reyes had an idea of a way to honor those from Pinal County that gave their lives in defense of their country. That idea is now a mission for Frank, a veteran of the U.S. Army who lost a brother Lupe Reyes in the Korean War and a nephew Larry Garcia in Vietnam. Frank met with like minded people to set up the Pinal County Veterans Memorial Foundation (PCVMF). The Foundation is made up of veterans, citizens and volunteers from around the county. The Foundations mission is to “memorialize all the brave men and women who have paid the ultimate price in responding to our nation’s call to serve in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant

Marine Corps, and to ensure their sacrifi ce will be remembered and will not have been in vain.” The committee members include retired Casa Grande Attorney Tom McCarville. The City of Casa Grande has set aside a seven-acre portion of the Ed Hooper Rodeo Park for the memorial. There was a dedication ceremony on Nov. 8 for the future site of the Pinal County Veteran’s Memorial. An artist’s rendition of the park and a design for the memorial has been completed. The Foundation has applied for a planning grant with Open Spaces – Sacred Places to help with site design, planning and architectural components of the memorial. Even if they are awarded the grant, it will not cover the entire cost of the memorial construction. This is where support from

the public is needed. The PCVMF would like to begin construction this year. They intend to raise enough money from donations, fund raisers and events to begin Phase -1 of the construction by mid year 2012. They are looking for volunteers and organization around Pinal County to help them achieve their goal. They would like this to be a county wide project with as many communities participating as possible. They have set up a sponsorship program for individuals, corporate, and government sponsors with different levels of contribution. They have developed a website with information about the Foundation, the Memorial site, and a list of names of service men to be honored. The Foundation is in need of assistance in

Pinal County Veterans Memorial needs supportidentifying those heroes to be honored by the memorial. If you have a friend or family member that is not on the website’s list, please contact the PCVMF by phone or fi ll out the submission form on the website for verifi cation. If your organization or group would like to do fundraising in your community or would like to know more about the Memorial, the Foundation committees would be happy to have someone come and speak to your group. On March 3, 2012, the Second Annual Pinal County Veteran’s Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at the Arizona City Golf course at 13939 South Cleater Road in Arizona City. For reservations and information contact Steve Ketsdever 520-858-5678, email: [email protected] or Palmer Miller 520-431-3399, email: [email protected]. The PCVMF will be starting up a “Brick Paver Program” to help fund the memorial. The plan is to incorporate 20,000 brick pavers throughout the memorial site and you

will be able to purchase a brick paver with your name, your family’s name or in memory of a friend or loved one engraved into the brick as a contributor to the Pinal County Veterans Memorial. No price has been set for the brick pavers as this program is still in the

planning stages. For more information about the Veterans memorial or the Foundation, contact them at 520-466-0280 or email: [email protected]. Visit their website to keep updated on the latest news about the Memorial. Website: pcvmf.org.

By John Hernandez Though the horses he met were significantly shorter in stature than the ones he worked with many years ago, it was like old hat to Vincent Suarez. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Little Hooves & Big Hearts of Oracle hosted four generations of the Suarez family. Little Hooves & Big Hearts (LHBH) is a non-profit organization that uses miniature horses to provide animal-assisted therapy to their clients that helps them to achieve greater self confidence, lessened feeling of

loneliness and dependency and an improved sense of overall well-being. They give children with special needs, seniors and others the opportunity to improve their physical and emotional well-being through interaction with specially trained miniature horses. They are based in Oracle but have trailers and will travel. The Suarez family was up from Tucson to visit Little Horses & Big Hearts and let an old cavalry officer Vincent Suarez enjoy the day with the little horses, his daughter Annette and her husband Alan, his

granddaughters Nicole and Dani and his great granddaughter Sofia. Vincent is 96 years old and has lived an interesting life. He was born in El Tigre, Sonora, Mexico in 1915. His father, Benito, had gotten a job there in the mine because he was bi-lingual and had dual citizenship. El Tigre was a mining camp built around the El Tigre silver mine. El Tigre was an American owned mine that also produced significant amounts of gold as well as copper, lead and zinc. The mine closed down around 1939 and it is now a

ghost town. The Mexican Revolution was going on at the time and rebels aligned with Pancho Villa were in the area. During the years from 1912 to 1915 American management and workers were forced to flee a number of times to Douglas, Arizona to avoid trouble with the rebels. Benito Suarez was on the very first University of Arizona football team in 1899. The first Territorial Cup game was held that year against Tempe Normal (now Arizona State University) which the U of A lost 11 to 2. Benito played four years of football and left with a degree in accounting. The Suarez family was one of ten families honored at halftime during the homecoming game at the University of Arizona’s Centennial in 1999. When Vincent was seven, his family moved to Douglas, Arizona where his father took a job as an accountant for a department store. Vincen grew up in Douglas. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, Vincent worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). While working with the CCC he helped build the Sabino Canyon dam and other improvements in the area. In 1936, the CCC was active at the Colossal Cave. He worked there as an electrician running the wire and installing the lights inside of the Colossal Cave. He was also editor of the CCC Camp newsletter, the Colossal Cave Chronicle, which changed its name to the Colossal Caveman, a few months later still edited by Vincent. I was able to find a story in the first issue of the newsletter he edited on the internet. It was a humorous story entitled Beans, Beans and More Beans. It was lamenting the fact that apparently the workers at Camp SP-10-A at La Posta Quemada

By Vicki Clark Rob Bulman, the new funeral director for Griffith Mortuary and the Superior Funeral Home, discovered Arizona a few years back and just knew that someday he would move here. That opportunity came last summer when he and his wife Joyce purchased the two mortuaries located in Kearny and Superior. Rob was born and raised in North Dakota and Minnesota. He graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and has been working in the field for 16 years. He and his assistant, Anthony Davis, are both licensed

funeral directors and offer a personalized approach for people at a very difficult time. “The business has changed in the last 15 years especially with cremation,” Rob said. “Funerals now are more like a celebration of life and we want to pay attention to the little things that families want and need.” Such needs could include anything from customized memorial cards, memory boxes and candles to specialty caskets. “A funeral is really for the living,” Rob said. “For the deceased, their journey is over and ours

are still continuing. We try to make the process as easy as possible by treating the surviving people with respect right from the beginning when the families invite us into their own lives.” The two homes serve all areas around the state and will go anywhere with their services. They also offer every kind of funeral service from the very simple to the elaborate. “Even though our location is rural, we can provide anything and everything that the city facilities have to offer,” Rob said. Another service that the business offers is a pre-paid

funeral plan. “A pre-paid plan allows individuals and families to make payments and the biggest advantage to this process is being able to take the financial strain away from the survivors,” Rob said. “It also allows the families to know as to what are the last wishes of the deceased.” Rob also wanted to put out the word that any pre-paid policies previously secured with either mortuaries will be honored. The new technology of today allows a whole new world and Rob said by accessing their websites, people will be able to see what they have as to

services provided as well an opportunity to offer condolences online and review obituaries, either current or previous and an archive is accessible Griffith Mortuary is located at 101 Johnston Drive in Kearny, the phone number is (520) 363-5353, website is www.griffthmortuary.com and you can e-mail Rob at [email protected]. Superior Funeral Home is

located at 379 South Ray Road in Superior. The phone number is (520) 689-9692 and the website is www.superiorfuneral.com. And the e-mail address is the same as above. Rob said in closing that he is often asked how he can he deal with death? His response, “It’s part of the job I chose, but I don’t really deal with death, I deal with the living.”

From your family

Ranch which is now part of the Colossal Cave Park and the other CCC camps ate a lot of beans. It started out, “There are three kinds of beans, those we had yesterday, those we had today, and those we will have tomorrow.” In 1940s, Vincent found himself in the United States Cavalry stationed at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Texas. His unit was involved in maneuvers in Louisiana when a hurricane hit the area. It was quite a struggle to protect their horses and themselves. When World War II arrived, the cavalry was absorbed into the 3rd Armored Division. Vincent would serve under General George Patton. When the allies invaded North Africa, Vincent was a Lieutenant and responsible for the food and supplies for Patton’s headquarters in Casablanca. It was there that his life would take a dramatic change.

In Casablanca, Vincent met the woman who would become his wife. His wife Dolores was from Ayamonte, Spain and was living near the airport. When I asked Vincent how long he was married to her he said, “I’m still married to her.” Vincent told me that he was popular with the civilian population in Casablanca. Food and supplies were being strictly rationed and difficult to find before the arrival of the Americans. Vincent was able to make it easier for food and supplies to come into the city. After the war, they would eventually make their home in Tucson where Vincent worked for the Civil Service for more than 30 years. Dolores and Vincent would raise a family of five children – two boys Vincent, Jr. and Robert and three girls - Annette, Janette and Sovia. The 3rd Army participated in the invasion of Sicily. Patton took over the 7th Army and fought their way across Normandy into

Germany. Vincent was at the Battle of the Bulge when Patton’s Army relieved the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne. He was also present when they liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau. “If anybody doubts that there was a Holocaust, have them talk to Vincent,” said Vincent’s son-in-law Alan Setherley. Alan said that Vincent had told him the story about seeing the inmates who were just skin and bones, and dead bodies piled up 30 deep. It was something he would never forget. The Suarez family enjoyed the day watching the miniature horses perform; watching Vincent interact with horses and seeing Sofia lead one of the horses around. It was enjoyable to watch Vincent as one of the little horses was brought to him. His eyes lit up as he petted the horse and he said, “I used to be in the cavalry.” Tammy Mockbee, Executive Director of Little

Hooves and Big Hearts, said that seniors’ interaction with her miniature horses will often trigger memories for them. The relaxed atmosphere during the animal assisted therapy brings them out of their shell and they may talk more and share feelings with family members or the staff of Little Hooves & Big Hearts. LHBH visits nursing homes and hospices. The horses are so well trained they can go into rooms and visit clients at their bedside. They also work with individuals and groups at their arena in Oracle. Therapy sessions start out at $40 per hour and include activities designed for the individual and groups. Contributions are always welcome at LHBH as well as volunteers. One of the group of volunteers that helps them is the boys from Rites of Passage. The boys help clean up the area and keep their nature trail cleared. In turn the boys get to interact with the horses. If you are interested in their services, want to volunteer or make a donation, contact Little Hooves & Big Hearts at (520) 896-2820. You can also find out more information by visiting the website at www.littlehoovesandbighearts.org.
